I luv me some dosas and Dosa Express hits the spot! I came here with fam and we ordered a bunch of dishes: - Onion Pakaora https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/dosa-express-san-mateo?start=120&select=0k_Rbi5Y-c5WqMe3QiohyA - Mini Idli https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/dosa-express-san-mateo?start=120&select=EN1dA3B6w-up_WAsF0MJtg - Samosa https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/dosa-express-san-mateo?start=120&select=Tm1Q_WVrfa2jnzuJcyti3g - Masala Dosa - Mysore Masala Dosa https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/dosa-express-san-mateo?start=120&select=xvpXZNKWIczgFJP1K5vhqA The food came out quick, piping hot, and full of flavor. Our feast was delicious! The only lackluster thing for me was the coconut chutney. The flavor was milder than what I've had at other restaurants. That said, one of the best mint chutneys I've had. It has a bit of a spicy kick! They also give a chutney that is ginger-forward and tastes very fresh. My fave was their tomato chutney which is BOMB! I would love a jar of that stuff! Large dining room and helpful staff. When I asked the difference between Masala Dosa and Mysore Masala Dosa, they explained that Mysore includes a chutney layer. Yum! They were also helpful in confirming what is vegan and what isn't. I would easily eat here again. Parking is competitive on the street but totally worth the effort.

    The DoorDash order.

I cannot comment to the ambience, cause it was a DoorDash to go order, but I will say this place is a no go!! An an order for lunch that went so terribly wrong. Where do I start? For a 10:30 AM delivery, clearly, this indicates that either the kitchen opened bright and early at 8-9am, or it's all leftover food warmed up, thrown together and delivered! The roti pachadi is plain and simple RANCID. I wish there was a way to capture the stink, the smell, and the sound of bubbles bubbling over. The Medu vada must've been made yesterday, taken out of the freezer, reheated today and packed - it lacked freshness! It wasn't crisp on the outside nor the inside soft and fresh like a freshly fried Vada. The sambar stank! It had an odd growth on it. The curd rice again proves that it's leftover rice thrown into curds with some seasoning sprinkled on the top. The rice grains were hard. It's not the satisfying curd rice that one eats at home. Curd rice is supposed to be gooey and soft and enjoyable! As soon as I received the order, I called the establishment to tell them about the roti pachadi rancidity. I think they ought to see it to believe it. I'm on my way there. I met with the owner and she popped open the lid of the chutney - which STANK to high heavens! Skip this place!

A newly opened Indian restaurant in San Mateo..checked out early during week with my friend. It's refreshing nice decor and with comfy seats..with more spacious seating in the back as well. Tried their lunch thali..which is just adequate to fill you up with tasty curries(loved the eggplant curry) , flavoured variety of rices and accompanied by their off menu lychee shake. The taste and style is more southern India (believe Andhra style) - but not too spicy, just adequate. It gives a feeling of simple n homely taste with quick service. Will come back to try their dosa(always in pursuit of that perfect crispy masala dosa) and other items.

Plain Dosa Masala Chai Gajar Ka Halwa
    Tun

Had a bad experience. I'm a fan of dosa and this was the thinnest dosa I've ever eaten. Chai tastes like water and halwa is oily and not tasty at all. I regret for choosing this restaurant just by how the restaurant interior looks like. I'm reviewing this so the restaurant can improve on the food quality.

    Uttapam with chutneys

Made a reservation since we were a large group. It seemed they were understaffed and the waiter was scrambling to serve all the tables. The dosas, vada, uthappam and sambar were mediocre, all 3 chutneys had awful taste - normally coconut chutney should not be so spicy. Convenient and uninspiring location, décor inside was optimistic. I would not make a special trip here again, too expensive for the quality of food and subpar location.

Fantastic food, excellent service, and a beautiful ambiance! We tried their unlimited vegetarian thali, idli/pongal combo, uggani bhajji, cut mirchi, onion bhajji, Mumbai gini dosa, punugulu, chickoo shake, and mango lassi. Everything tasted delicious! The best part is the thali's unlimited refills, which is a great deal. Their spacious outdoor seating is perfect for corporate lunches or large gatherings. Plus, the location is convenient--just 10 minutes from SFO airport. We'll definitely be back to explore more items on the menu!

Someone recommended this place so we tried it. The interior was done very nicely compared to the dreary design of the previous establishment. We ordered the Uthappam and Dosa. My Uthappam was so bland, I had to add salt to it. The crispiness was so so. I did not taste my husband's dosa but he wasn't thrilled. On top of that they served plastic utensils. Sorry, I'll stick to my favorite dosa on Valencia St.

SPEEDY SERVICE While daunting in appearance, the long line out in front moves surprisingly quickly - only 12 minutes for us to get seated! Friendly enthusiastic attentive staff. Given the queue, they really move you through here in a friendly sort of way, so it's not a place to sit and linger after consuming your meal. There's tons of dessert places just outside.. =) Inside you'll find airy high ceilings and a busy energetic vibe with music that is almost kinda loud! Tables are pretty close together to accommodate everyone. Understandable given the constant lines outside. We came here on a late afternoon midweek. We ordered the: CHASU RICE Appearing almost immediately after ordering, you get a good sized bowl of your basic bits of pork belly-infused Japanese rice - tender and most throughout. It could use a tiny pinch of salt to dial it in, but it worked well with the Aburasoba. Generous serving - enough for both of us. ORIGINAL ABURASOBA オリジナル油そば Aburasoba basically means "oil noodles". Not "oily" in a bad sense, but supple and smooth and superb! With this you get two pieces of 1/8" thick chashu, bamboo shoots, green onions, and nori (seaweed.) The star of the show here are the noodles - supple, al-dente with every bite and such an delightful texture. Served warm. Suggested for first timers, I split this with my light-eating wife. Between us, and the side of rice it was enough for a light lunch after a big breakfast we had earlier. I definitely look forward to coming back here at the first opportunity. Worth the wait.

The place is quite pretty. We opted for a small table outside , which is much quieter. Our waiter was a bit stiff around the collar. I suspect he is an old timer, and clearly, we are not regulars. Regardless, the food is great, and the prices are reasonable. The Food: Zucchini Cake, $15 - 4.5 Stars Menu: crispy zucchini cakes with cucumber & mint-yogurt dressing These cakes are ball shaped, deep fried, and made a healthy veggie taste naughty type of good. Very yummy. Lol Tzatziki, $9 - 5 Stars Refreshing and delicious, the tzatziki is an excellent complement to the meal. Octopus, $19 - 5 Stars I really need to stop eating octopus, but when I am in a Greek or Spanish restaurant, I am weak. Grilled octopus legs are soooo good. Their version is grilled just right, not too much char, plus they smartly removed the hardened tips (common) before serving. See photo. Lamb Shank, $34 - 5 Stars Menu: aromatic braised lamb shank with orzo & myzithra cheese The lamb meat is tender and falls off the bone. It is cooked just right. Mykonos Souvlaki, $31 - 5 Stars Menu: herbs marinated tenderloin, shallot & rosemary skewers I enjoy a tasty protein and produce meal, and this dish is perfection with tender pieces of tenderloin over a pile of veggies. However, thank god the food itself is not reminiscent to my college's dining commons. Now if you want to try a little bit of every dip, just ask for the sampler. And if you do get the sampler, the red/orange dip is my favorite. It's nutty with a little bit of a spice. I have no idea which dip it is on the menu and I'm scared to steer my yelp fans wrong (However looking at the menu, it might be the Tirokafteri. Hold the applause guys, I just looked for whichever dip said "spicy"). Next, my recommended dishes are the Dolmathes, the Lamb Riblet, the Fishermen's Pasta, and the Traditional Moussaka. If you really want to do yourself a favor and practice some self-love, you'd get the Fishermen's Pasta. Hands down the best dish I've tried here. The sauce was bursting with so much flavor that I almost developed synesthesia but for food. The Lamb Riblet was also a great standout because it fell off the bone so easily that I almost took the bones home to give to my dog (I don't have a dog). There was only one dish that was a bit disappointing and that was the Short Rib Pasta. Lack of flavor. Tasted like cardboard compared to everything else. Not that I know what cardboard tastes like but that's what I imagine it to be like. I'd avoid that dish unless you're a cat who's teething and needs to bite into some cardboard then you should go for it.

Always love the option to join the online waitlist ahead of time when reservations aren't available. Favorite dishes of the night were: -Gnocchi Fritto appetizer: Never had fried gnocchi before, had a great puffy texture. Truffle taste in the truffle cream sauce wasn't very strong. -Zucchine e Maiz lasagna: Pesto was a great sauce choice and paired well with the zucchini and corn. -Squid Ink Seafood Pasta (special): Generous seafood portions and the dish was flavorful. -Complimentary focaccia: Fluffy and yummy with olive oil. Other dishes: The Italian Sausage lasagna was fine. I personally love crispy lasagna edges, but some people found it too crisp and too dry. The salad (Insalata di Rucola) wasn't mind blowing, but I'm glad we ordered a veg to cut through the richness and heaviness of three carb-heavy entrees. The restaurant itself is smaller than expected, so I would avoid coming here with large parties. It also felt really hot and stuffy inside, which I anticipate getting worse as summer progresses. The interior is cutely decorated. Service was initially attentive. We did have to flag down our waitress multiple times to order and get the check. Seafood Linguni Special (5/5): If the waiter tells you this is the special today, this is a MUST ORDER! We substituted the squid ink spaghetti with linguini, and it perfectly soaked up the DECADENT SAUCE. Not too salty and perfectly balanced. Complimented the seafood incredibly. I will come back and eat this EVERY TIME. Pesto Gnocchi (4/5): They cook the gnocchi really tender and soft, so don't expect really chewy potato dumplings. I personally like the texture and it absorbed the pesto really well. This had no frills and was simple. Could use some more salt and cheese, but still easily yummy. -1 star because we did find a little piece of white plastic in our Lasagna Bolognese (pictured in this review). Our food took a long time to come out because the kitchen (staffed by a single chef) had to switch between gluten free equipment, frying oil, etc. The fact that they take the time to isolate the gluten free food so carefully shows an extraordinary level of conscientiousness. To make our wait more bearable, the woman working the front of house brought us complimentary hot tea and tempura. The tempura had a particularly crisp texture and delicate flavor that led me to ask what kind of oil they use. They use rice bran oil. If you are familiar with this oil, it's expensive to source and typically used in high end restaurants. We ordered shio saba, vegan curry, and chirashi. The saba was very high quality and grilled delicately without drying out. It also came with tempura and pickles. The rice was also great, with every grain separated and perfectly steamed. I hate mushy rice, and you can tell Minako puts a lot of effort into doing it right. The curry was deliciously flavored, reminiscent of S&B but with less of a turmeric flavor. The chirashi was good, but I think the curry was the star of the day. The quality of ingredients and the expert preparation make this a very high value for money. Next time we will call our order in advance, and I'm looking forward to trying oyaku don. If you find yourself hungry for Japanese food that feels homemade, you must try Minako.
