I turned my BMW over to AAA towing and sent it to Dose Independent BMW repair with the knowledge that my transmission wasn't functioning and I had been quoted another repair shop that it would cost $6000 to replace the transmission. After Dose received my car they said they wanted to eliminate any electrical issues as my battery was over 8 years old. After eliminating the electrical system they suggested there might be a problem with a computer related part that sends messages to the transmissions. I meant to write this review a few months ago, back when Brandon and his team helped me get my e90 back on the road after it needed a ton of repairs: radiator, intake manifold gasket, belts, shocks, rear brakes, to name a few. They handled the work in a timely manner and gave me fair pricing on everything. I had to bring it back recently as a different issue came up with my car, but again, Brandon and everyone else did a great job, and in a timely fashion. Last year, I took my 2014 X1 to El Cajon BMW dealership for routine maintenance. The car had 32,000 miles on it and didn't have any particular electrical or mechanical issues. The car remained at the dealership for two days and they told me that the gearbox is seeping oil. They asked to keep the car for a 3rd day to do a deeper inspection. At the end of the 3rd day, they concluded that the gearbox housing is cracked and that I need to spend $10,000 to replace the entire gearbox. I told them that I don't have that kind of money to do the replacement, so I took the car to a BMW shop in Mira Mesa. Without even inspecting my car or looking at it, the front desk person told me to just replace the gearbox because that's a common issue with the X1 model. Luckily after I did some Yelp search I came across Dose Independent BMW Service in El Cajon City. I took the car to them and was greeted by Brandon. He asked to leave the car for two days to do a thorough inspection. Brandon called me at the end of the 2nd day and said your car doesn't need a new gearbox. There was some residual oil from your last oil change, we cleaned it and monitored it and there is nothing coming out. I ended up paying Dose Independent $50, that's it. I drive the same car to this very day and the car has nearly 46,000 miles on it Today and I never experienced an issue with oil leaks or such. From that day on, I stopped going to dealerships and I'm now a happy regular customer at Dose Independent. They provide the best service in San Diego at a very reasonable cost. DOSE WALKS ON WATER I live in San Francisco, so why would in the world travel all the way to El Cajon to have my drop dead gorgeous, 530i serviced? First, lets try no nonsense evaluation of the problem and honest conversation that left me equipped to make an informed, intelligent decision. My car needed a transmission and to anyone who has a BMW that means the vacation money and maybe more or some nightmares at the very least. Price is always a clincher for me but nothing beats high quality workmanship. This August DOSE had my transmission on sale for $2950 Tax included, installed. Everyone else wanted $4000 to $4,500. My transmission came with a new torque converter. I didn't even have to ask. My Bimmer lives in Palm Springs, CA. I booked the appointment and hopped a $67.00 flight to Palm Springs and VOILA the next day was at DOSE. I had planned to get a hotel and stay the night in case it took all day but they were incredibly efficient. The job was complete in a little over three hours. I got to see the replacement transmission. Everything in it was brand new not re-manufactured. The case so clean it was as new. The room was very clean not a hint of grease. While they had the car up on the lift they found some things that would have caused huge problems down the line. Since all of those parts were factory original (130,000 miles old) I gave them the green light to replace what was needed. This is where a lot of garages take you to the cleaners. But not at DOSE. These are the things that set DOSE apart from other shops. They could have ignored these problems or they could have charged a lot to fix them. Cost me a couple of hundred bucks to add many years of trouble free driving. Does DOSE walk on water? Well that might be stretching it a bit. But this family run operation is the cleanest, most efficiently run, independently owned BMW garages I've ever seen. In areas where they could take advantage of the customer they choose to build loyalty by providing solid service at a sizable savings. Saving the best for last- my gas consumption was such a problem I actually considered not having it repaired at all. It was driving me crazy how low my gas millage was. No other mechanic came up with a logical explanation or they made wild speculations that would have cost me thousands with no guarantees. DOSE fixed the gas consumption problem. There were no parts involved. Just the proper diagnostics and the deft hand of Kyle to tweak my baby into shape. I was purchasing a 2014 BMW Z4 from a dealer in El Cajon, but I live in Oakland. So I asked the dealer if they would take the car for a PPI before committing to buying it. I found Dose here on Yelp and gave them a call. Chatted initially with Steve and then with Brandon a few times. Both incredibly helpful. I arranged the PPI with Brandon and then let the car dealer know (Legacy Cars, also in El Cajon). Legacy dropped the car off on Tuesday (this week), and Brandon called me in the afternoon. Said he was surprised about how good the condition was on the car. He let me know about a few minor body wear and tear issues/fixes - but super minor. He essentially gave it a thumbs up. Although they're located in east county, The drive is totally worth it. I purchased a 2004 Land Rover Range Rover. These Rovers have BMW transmissions and engines. I got this vehicle for a good price because it did not run right. I learned that it needed a new transmission. Dose was recommended. I made an appointment and drove to San Diego to get the vehicle worked on. The Dose shop was super clean and the customer service was beyond belief! They put me up at the Sheraton Bay Tower at their expense while they were working on the car. I had a $300 a night room overlooking the marina! But the important thing was the unbelievable quality of the work they did on my car! A previous owner had had a timing chain replaced by someone who didn't know what they were doing. The expert Dose mechanic correctly diagnosed that one of the cams was off timing by 37.5 degrees. He fixed that and put in a remanufactured ZF transmission that is flawless! My BMW required several items be addressed as it had reached 60,000 miles. Dose had the correct service task list ready and reviewed each with me. Example, spark plugs are normally a 100,000 mile item in my past experience. However, my engine is a 3.0 liter turbo and BMW recommends replacing the plugs at 60,000 so I did it. Interestingly, my gas mileage has improved by more than 5% since they replaced the spark plugs and air filter. Also, I added a four wheel alignment when I learned they do their alignments with a laser set-up. Very accurate and results were as expected. read more

I came across Dose through a referral as being transmission "experts". Typically I am a little skeptical of the word "expert" getting tossed around liberally these days, but I trusted the person that referred me. I spoke with Steve who is a total transmission nerd. I mean this in a good way of course. He knows his stuff inside and out and was honest and informative about what the problem was. Steve was able to rebuild the transmission as well as point out some other issues I had which I was not aware of (but not in that sleezy Jiffy Lube kind of way).
