We went to Lunch and order their chicken strips. They were overdone. There wasn't any dipping sauce, luckily I had ordered a side salad which came with prepackaged dressings. Oh the staff here is so warm and welcoming. We came early in the morning and you can tell they have lots of regulars. My boys were very impressed with the bacon lol crispy and thick they loved it! We had breakfast here. I opted for an early bird special of pancakes with two eggs, and husband had the classic. My pancakes weren't as light and fluffy as I like them but they were still good. Syrup was served warm which I love. Over easy eggs were cooked to perfection. The place was full of regulars, most eating alone. One table of regulars was quite boisterous. Service was excellent. Dottie's is an excellence choice for breakfast. The front desk person at our hotel told us that Dottie's is the best place in town for breakfast. So off we went to Dottie's! And they didn't disappoint. Four of us all had different breakfasts. I tried a taste of everyone's food and it was all good. My father's giant pancake was pretty cool! My wife also tried the pudding cake because it's made in-house -- it was incredible -- rich & sweet & flavorful! The service was also good. The restaurant itself is quite large and it has a warm, homey, northern cabin type feel to it. They have a bunch of framed nature prints for sale throughout. Some are displayed on the wall and others are stacked up in front so you can flip through them and check them all out. Most people enter through the back door. The front door is open...but there's no parking in the front and there are 4 lanes of traffic. Almost everyone parks in back where there's a huge parking lot. We stopped for mid-morning breakfast on a summer Saturday. The place was nearly full. Service was attentive and friendly despite the rush. My coffee cup never got below half full. Food took a little longer than expected. The waitress kept us updated and we saw the staff was doing a good job serving and clearing tables. Food was good. Not gourmet but what you'd expect in a cafe. But my daughter's biscuits and gravy was as good as we've ever had anywhere. Big portions. Only one of us could finish our meals. Went to Dottie's for the Fri. night all-you-can-eat Walleye while on vacation near Grand Rapids. Judging by the high percentage of apparent "locals" dining there (based on fact that many people knew each other and the wait staff), it's a small-town favorite. We were impressed -- here's why: (1) Walleye was delicious, and we tried both the fried and grilled. I had the grilled and, though I was coveting my husband's fried filets while simultaneously feeling good about saving the calories, both versions were very good and fresh tasting. (There's walleye in probably every lake in the area.) Nice to have the choice, which is rare for a Fri. night fish special. (2) Service was quick and very friendly. Nothing lacking, and felt almost like having dinner in a friend's home. (3) Atmosphere was quaint and cabin/diner style -- just like one might expect in an old city where logging was the leading industry in the early 1900s. (4) Delicious homemade desserts, and a large selection including several pies. Dottie's exterior is not impressive, hence our passing it by and passing it up several times throughout our week's stay... until I picked up a menu/brochure in the local bait shop and saw all they had to offer. At this time (maybe always?), the restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch only except on Fridays, when they have the fish special. The menu is extensive, and we would've returned had we not visited on our last night in town. read more

Visiting town, looking for a home cooked breakfast. Found this nondescript restaurant and realized that this is where the locals go. The decor is old and neglected,but the food is scratch made and the portions are huge. Our table ordered a mix of savory and sweet and everyone left happy and full. We didn't get a chance to eat other meals at Dotties, but we would definately recommend it for breakfast! read more

Did the All-You-Can-Eat-Walleye last time I was in town. Nothing beats walleye in my book. Nothing. Great service, price, and atmosphere.

I really hate to do this to a local restaurant, but my experience here was one of the absolute worst I have ever had in ANY restaurant I have dined in. We went here for breakfast and the place was quite busy... a good sign right? We ordered coffee and our meals. Then we waited... and waited, and waited and waited and waited... seriously it was that long. Actually we never got our food after waiting 45 minutes. We paid for the coffee we got (and drank about 4 cups each). The wait staff just kept saying "it's really busy today"... no offers for anything to help make our horrible experience better, just a monotone poor excuse. It was pancakes, eggs, bacon and some french toast. I don't care how busy it is, if you are not able to serve the breakfast crowd that you seat then don't allow that many people in the door. That order should not take that long and when your customers are displeased and still waiting for a simple order there should have been more done about it. We will never return here... ever. read more

This used to be a great place to go and eat particularly with the kids. The past few times we've been there the food has been just gross. The service has been extremely slow and once we left because no one served us for 20 minutes. Not even drinks. Sadly we won't be returning to this local establishment. read more

Dottie's is by far the best breakfast place in town, especially if what you're looking for is a classic, down home Northern MN breakfast. As a super early riser I also love that they serve lunch meals during the hours most place around town only serve breakfast. The servers here are always pleasant, busy, but willing to check on their tables regularly without being overbearing. Parking can be meh, but there's plenty of street parking if the lot is tight. read more

went here with my boyfriend for the first time, but he grew up in this little Cafe. we went to have breakfast, but my boyfriend isn't much of a breakfast guy so of course he chose to get a burger & fries at 8 in the morning (who does that??). I was very surprised to hear that you could get anything on their menu from breakfast to dinner at any time of day. such a cute place and lots of seating.
