We stopped in for breakfast this morning. This was a rustic old cafe, that was northern Minnesota at its best. There were several local people eating, and everybody was friendly. We had the stuffed hash browns, ham and cheese omelette, eggs and bacon breakfast, cake donut, and a sweet roll. The food was very good and lots of it. Today was the best breakfast we have had the whole week that we were visiting the area. Our server was Sarah, and she was great. This place is/was worth a stop. It was good food and not fast food. If you're in the area give this place a chance for breakfast. Also they had an envelope that was marked for buying a veteran breakfast on their pin-up board, so don't forget about them. read more

Reasonably priced small town diner. Service was a bit underwhelming and slow - seemed like it was more centered around the locals and we weren't their top priority. Food was OK, but they directed us to the Stuffed Hash Brown and I have to be honest, it just was not very good. Just everything kind of thrown inside a big hash brown. Friendly cool place to dine with the locals, eat delicious food, and at reasonable prices. Coffee was only $0.50! Ate at the counter due to how busy it was on a late Friday morning, where we were able to admire the stuffed hash browns the countermate couple shared. They were locals and said this was the place to be for breakfast. We wanted to try one of their fresh rolls, but arrived too late, they were all gone (they were only $1.50). This place came recommended by the blackjack table we were gambling with nearby. We didn't realize they didn't serve alcohol until we were seated. I went with the burger and cup of creamy veggie soup, trying to eat a little something that wasn't fried. Husband had the burger and waffle fries. The food was just ok. Soup was cold and not not very good. Burger was dry. Best part, ironically, was the waffle fries. Service was excellent. The place was quite busy, but there also are not a lot of options in the area. read more

This is a very small town diner experience. The food portions are HUGE! The quality of the food is ok . But suffering from being very under seasoned . This place also gets very busy but turnover seems quick . I ordered the Sportsman's Burger . It was ok . The BBQ sauce was also too much and very sweet . The amount was out of control . Almost drowning in BBQ . I also found a huge hair in my burger . Very disappointed. Kinda gross . The service was very lacking . She was very overwhelmed by here amount of tables . We maybe seen her 3 times all together. All in all this is a good cheap place to get a lot of food . But check it over throughly and don't forget the Salt and Pepper. read more

Great breakfast and lunch, inexpensive and delicious. Food is always cooked perfectly and the wait staff is friendly and on point. Best stuffed hash brown in the Midwest hands down! Coffee isn't for the bold strong brewed taste buds but it's 50 cents! Cinnamon buns are warm, homemade and delicious. Perfect compliment to the other breakfast items. Oh and their PIE! My niece loves their milk shakes and they never fry a bad egg in this place! Love the merchandise for sale as well. Being an out of towner we love stopping in for breakfast on our way in and out for our annual family fishing trip. Lunch items match up as well. Good salads and burgers to boot! The Sportsman's Cafe is a great local cafe - well worth the stop if you're in Deer River. About half of my family lives in Deer River so I've been to the Sportman's Cafe many times. They're consistently good and above average in almost every category. They serve breakfast, lunch, & dinner. The service is always awesome and the food always comes out quickly. All of the food I've tried ranges from decent to great - some items are fresh and some have oversized portions. The burgers are always good. The roast beef is awesome. I've never tried the ice cream but it looks pretty good. I've tried the fresh pies and they're very good. You get the idea. I love restaurants that are exactly what they represent themselves to be. This one is perfect by that criterion; a small town meat-and-potatoes restaurant with extremely friendly and fast service. 5 stars. Chicken Cordon Bleu? Not here. Injera, wat, and tibs? Nope. Stuffed hash browns, good onion rings, good Reubens, good hamburgers, ... ? Step right up. No credit cards, though. Cash or check but there is a cash machine in the back hall. We've eaten all over the world, from Paris to Cape Town and from Singapore to Beijing. We enjoy a meal at the Sportsman as much as we have enjoyed a good meal anyplace else. read more

This place is a hole-in-the-wall. You'd never even know this place was here if you weren't a local. I don't even think the sign works and it's tiny at that. But they are open and do a good business and is always filled with mostly older locals (go to where the old folks eat... they always know a deal right??). Not everything here is wonderful, but everything is generally pretty solid and the prices are unbeatable. The omelets are huge! I swear you get a 1/2 pound of hash browns with an egg order. They serve breakfast all day (which is what we come for, my kids love eggs and I can feed both for $5.75). Check out the daily special, it's usually pretty good and if you come too late it's generally gone. Their soups are good, their burgers are decent. No credit cards. Pop is in cans. Check out handmade local crafts throughout... on walls and on counter. Super cute stuff! read more

Two of our party had the all you can eat fish and chips hardly any fish in the fried fish mostly batter they switched to shrimp and is was nasty little tiny salad shrimp that tasted fishy. I cannot eat heavy batter, fried food so went with what I thought was safe, grilled chicken breast with peppers and cheese. It was so dry I couldn't even eat half and on top of that my baked potato was sadly undercooked. Only cafe I've seen in the last several years that doesn't accept cards. It's ridiculous and shows a complete disregard for the customer when you are operating a food service establishment that doesn't take cards. Further adding to the disgust is the ATM with an outlandish fee. The message is clear: ownership is too cheap to pay a nominal fee to process cards(the universal accepted form of currency worldwide) they'd rather squeeze a few extra dollars out of the customer with ATM fees. As absolutely authentic a small-town diner as you can find. Step across the threshold and you are heading out of pretentious and food-snob world and back into a place where the food is real and the locals populate the place all day. The menu has some unique features, usually involving size and Texas toast, but you will leave full and happy. Pies and soups are all made on site and there's breakfast served all day, including those great biscuits mentioned in another review. Stop in, you won't leave hungry. read more
