hey three stars is pretty good for a bar that prides itself on lower ave A trashy atmosphere. more than that would just be insulting to their intent. anyhow, what do we got here? a step up from the old rotted out CBGB's, just a step. the jukebox is late 70s/early 80s hardedgey stuff - iggy, television, dolls, pistols - and the screens show - yup - old music clips of gary numan and early pretenders, mixed with avantgardarama hardcore vaudevilleporn -- porneville -- you know, clowns whipping penetrating bondage chix with solid objects. they moan. all in good fun y'know, safely ensconced on the little tv screens. down on the floor below, people getting drunk, shooting pool and pinball, waiting for the bathroom. a girl catnapping in a corner. guys wearing hats that say, i'm cleverly wearing a hat so i hope you think i am interesting. people getting drunk. a good time had by all, the same good time as the day before but sometimes that's good enough. it's not good to overthink the fundamentals. the best thing is something called ass juice. for $3, you get a whiskey glass about half full of a concoction of liquors and juices that tastes like a candy-ish mixer and goes down way too easy, then rears up its dragon head and makes you roar. after maybe 4 of them. it's 4 for $11. so there is method to the mad business after all. they are a real pleasure. man, woman, score! read more

my favourite time to stop in at the Double Down is in the afternoon for Happy Hour! a couple of beers on the back patio while it's still kinda nice out = perfect. service is (usually) friendly, the photo booth is fun, the music is good & loud, and the beers are cold! read more

When in doubt, Double Down. My girlfriend introduced me aa few years ago and this quickly became one of my favorite dives in the city. Besides the bitchy bartender that served watered down drinks last night, it's usually a relaxed environment with great punk music, fetish videos and cheap drinks. Love the smoking patio in the back but it sucks that they close it at ten. Why, DD, why? Also, didn't appreciate leaving at 3:35am to get a lamb gyro (literally across the street) and then not be able to get back in for one last drink. WTF bouncer man, it wasn't 4 yet :( read more

I came here for a quick drink after a dinner. The place was pretty big but had a weird funky smell. It looks like a heavy sports bar with all the TVs and sports signs out front. My friend really enjoyed it here but I had an okay time. They do have cheap drinks and cheap shots. read more

We saw "ass juice" on the menu (more like on a sign on the wall) and had to try it. I don't know what ass juice actually tastes like, but this stuff is great - it's easy to shoot, light and sweet, and a bargain, granted it contains a measurable amount of ethanol. This place is complete with a smoking area, a few arcade game machines, and a large box of condoms, free for grabs, or at least I assume so. Inexpensive drinks and free means to safer sex? I went to this bar once before after hearing that they had bloody marys made with bacon flavored vodka. I remember that experience as an epic brwal with the boyfriend while pounding those babies down. Despite my tainted memories and drunken oblivion I remember the bloody marys were AMAZING. So last night we revisited the DDS for their famous bacon bloody marys and the completely positive memorable experience that the place deserved. First of all we were greeted so kindly by the hostess with the mostess Jenna. She talked us into stepping it up to a pint glass sized serving, which was definitely the best choice because she makes the best damn bloody marys I have EVER EVER had in my life!!!!! Yes Jenna you do make them best! This girl is super sweet and super cool. I felt like I was chilling in her living room drinking and watching porn hahaha. You can tell that she loves that place, her job, and the crowd. She even remembered our names. Now that's service that I'll remember no matter how shit faced I got. I dont know what the hell she put in those things but its not a heavy mixture like youll usually find and they are garnished with a mini slim jim!!! say whatttt!? Seriously these things are amazing. The atmosphere of the place is very punk, well duh! It's a punk bar, now, I loved the paintings on the walls, they're murals, with strong colors and designs. It has a pool table and a spider man pin ball machine, so that's a plus. The bathrooms had TOILET PAPER, SOAP and PAPER TOWELS isn't that great? I mean for being a punk bar, the bartender is very funny, sarcastic, tattoed and foul mouthed, that's how I like them. The drinks are very cheap, 3.50 for PBR, 5 for a screw driver, 5 and 6 dollars beers (for being East Village) really it's not bad at all. The music is great 'cause it's punk, but old school punk it's very enjoyable. This is my favorite bar in the now-pretty-much boring and generic East Village. I can't say much for the weekend and night crowds because I've only been a few times, but during the day it is a very cool, relaxed atmosphere. Lots of neighborhood people pop in during the day so it's always fun to see who I will run into. Tuesday afternoons are THE BEST, bartender Kelly is really sweet and a lot of fun. The bar atmosphere was pretty cool - a bit raunchy with hardcore porn on TV and lots of sexual innuendos throughout - but it was a fun NYC dive bar atmosphere. The bouncer grilled me and my friend at the door as he checked our ID's, but we got in without any trouble. As broke college kids, we spent the night drinking $2 Genesee - like most of the other people in this bar. Though it sounds like everything was wonderful - THE BARTENDER WAS OVERWHELMINGLY RUDE to us and wouldn't stop. As two friendly, paying customers, we were completely shocked at the things he was saying to us. If you care to read the specifics please see below: We walk in and asked the bartender (Skinny, emo, asian a*hole): "Hey, so what kind of drink specials do you have here?" Not enthused, he replied "depends on what you want" Us: "Ok, well we're broke college kids haha - what's cheap here?" Bartender: "$2 Gennies" Us: "What's gennies? I've never heard of it" Bartender: "Do you want cheap or do you want answers" (RUDE) So we bought our 2 cans of "gennies" after the girl next to us so kindly explained that it was a type of cheap beer. Despite my desire not to, we DID tip him. We planned to stay there for 1 hour more before heading to a concert around the corner. We had two seats at the bar, which we did not leave and ordered our next round. Considering we planned to stay longer, we held off tipping for every round and were going to tip for everything on our last round. At one point, I saw a sign that said "ASS JUICE $4" - so i was curious what was in it. Me: "Do you mind me asking what's in Ass Juice?" Bartender: "Hmm.. Ass Juice... Maybe if you would've tipped me I would've told you." Me: "Excuse me?" Bartender: "You sit here drinking $2 beers and you can't even tip? I'm sure mommy and daddy are paying that credit card bill anyways" Me: "Whattt?. Look - it's not like we weren't going to tip, but we're planning to be here for a while, and will tip before we leave." Bartender: "Righttt.. so you want me to wait for you to get drunk so you can 'remember' to tip me" Me: "Wow.. well maybe we should take our service elsewhere, this isn't the only bar in NY" Bartender: "Yeah that'd be good, I don't want to serve you anyways."
