I have been coming to Dr Doug Nishida for years and have always been treated with respect and courtesy by the receptionist. However, my experience today was extremely disappointing. The employee who checked me in was rude, made no eye contact was on her personal cell phone having a conversation This woman was visibly sick--coughing and spitting. When I politely asked for hand sanitizer, she dismissively responded, We don't have that anymore. Given that this is an eye doctor's office with many patients coming in during flu season, I was shocked by the lack of basic hygiene precautions. She then asked me, in a rude tone, if I had been there before. Despite my records being up to date from my last visit in the fall, she handed me a form to fill out and then insulted my handwriting. Additionally, she was dressed in a sloppy and unkempt manner, and given how sick she was, she should have stayed home. What was even more disappointing was the way Doug handled the situation. When I told him I would have to cancel my appointment, he simply said, 'OK,' with no concern for why I was leaving. As a longtime patient, I expected at least some acknowledgment of the issue, if not an effort to make it right. This level of unprofessionalism, lack of basic health precautions, and disregard for patient experience is completely unacceptable. **If this is how patients are treated, I don't see how I can continue coming here. I sincerely hope this issue is addressed--both in terms of staff professionalism and the clinic's approach to health and customer service.**" read more

If you just need an updated prescription glasses, skip your employer vision insurance. Pay $75 for the consult here, they have great optometrists that will do a regular consultation. You pay $20 extra if you need the dilation. And then you are right next to the huge selection of glasses. It can be all done within the same day. You hand then your prescription and you select your glasses. They have promotions at times and their prices can't be beat (no, I don't work for them!:) You come back a week later to pick up your glasses. Super efficient and great team. I cancelled my employer vision insurance. It costs me a lot more in premium that was I paid here. My Dona ne husband got there too now. read more

Dr. Nishida deserves a strong review. I have seen him approximately 4 times, and each time he was generous with his time even though he has a very busy schedule. His staff is more efficient than you will find at many doctors, because they have to be with the volume going through here. He has modern diagnostic equipment. And the camera that takes a picture of your eyeball is the best! At this writing he only works M to F, so if you need the weekend you will get someone else. Maybe the guy who collects the shopping carts from the parking lot. (Just kidding!) Going to a Dr. in a Costco is a weird experience--it's like stepping into a sanctuary from an asylum, but it's worth it for this Doctor. Costs for a full contact/eyeglasses exam with follow-ups and sample contacts were approximately half of any other doctor. And you can pick up your trial contacts 7 days a week! It was easy to get an initial appointment within a few days, as well as follow-up appointments. Never be late for an appointment here--they schedule tight. read more

Dr. Nishida is absolutely the best optometrist around. We were referred by a friend and now travel from orange county to see him. My husband and I both have had lasik eye surgery and have been treated by ophthalmologists and yet Dr. Nishida provides a more thorough exam. He is polite, kind, and takes the time to explain what he is seeing. During this time of a pandemic, we felt safe in his office. He practices safe protocols and so does his front office staff. I had more than a few questions since I've had more than a few concerns with my eye health over the past few months (anyone else read that WSJ article regarding contact lens and eye health? Look it up). With that, she responded to my concerns knowledgeably and articulately, which was very important to me (and should be to anyone else who is seeing a doctor). Dr. Douglas was not my optometrist. It was a Saturday and a female optometrist was there. I was finishing up shopping decided to pop my head in and see how long it would be for me to get a new contact prescription. I want to try multifocal contacts. I had informally talk to two other optometrist office staff from "regular" optometry offices. They were not helpful. I inquired about multifocal contacts. The staff obviously said the doctor makes that decision after talking to you but they prescribe them. I asked him what the next appointment was. They said at 2:30. It was 2:25 PM. After waiting exactly 5 minutes and fill it out to the normal doctors paperwork, they took care of measuring pressures etc. The doctor was very professional, empathetic, and nice. She had great bedside manner. She gave me contacts to try after the fitting. She said it may take me a while to get adjusted. But it did not. They worked perfectly. She gave me a sample box and the script. A weak later, I left a message with a stupid question. She called me back and was kind enough to answer. The charges were like everything at Costco - cheaper than anywhere. Just like most everything in Costco, I was beyond satisfied. read more

I've been in glasses and contacts for 25+ years now and these people are, hands down, THE nicest and most thorough eye exam practitioners i have ever had the pleasure of visiting. I saw Dr. Oh. She was gentle and friendly. She explained everything she was doing and why. She made me feel completely at ease. The counter staff and the pre-test staff was also incredibly welcoming and forthcoming with information. I didn't have to ask a question the entire time i was there because these people were a step ahead of me, addressing all of my concerns before i even had to voice them. I was even able to get a same-day appointment and, while i was there, I saw them take two walk-ins. Increidible. Usually you have to book in advance. The exam was $89 for glasses and contacts. There are other test you can have them run at an extra cost, but they are each detailed on the intake form with a space for you to check off whether you would like them or not. Very easy, very transparent about costs, and all inclusive of tax. Dr. Oh suggested that I try a different brand of contacts than the ones I have been wearing. She gave me a sample and told me to come back in a week. At that point, she'll either write me a script for the new kind, if i like them, or the old kind if i don't...and she was sure to mention that the followup visit was included in the cost of today's visit - no extra charge. I didn't even have to ask. Brilliant. I could not have been happier with my visit. For the price, the service I got was incredible. I will definitely be back for all my future eye exams. read more

Dr Nishida is so thorough and calm and reasonably priced and generous with his time and competent, that if he were able to repeatedly clone himself, and if all of those clones became physicians of various specialties (e.g., an internist, dermatologist, etc.), I would chose each of the hims as my doctors. PROS ===== 1) $59 is a competitive price. 2) I received very fast and very efficient service. No muss. No fuss. 3) Although I didn't have an appointment but I was able to be seen by Dr Doug Nishida within 10 minutes. The entire process from when I first walked in to the office to ask if I could be seen until I paid and walked out with my prescription was probably around 20 minutes. I was very glad about that. 4) Dr Doug Nishida took his time and seems to have examined my eyes well. I was impressed with Dr Doug Nishida's careful and methodical approach. CONS ====== 1) I subtracted one star because the office is very poorly ventilated and the air is dusty. This is inexcusable. Obviously Dr Doug Nishida and/or Costco could properly ventilate the office and clean the HVAC ducts and filter(s). When I sneezed while Dr Doug Nishida was examining my eyes and then mentioned immediately after that to Dr Doug Nishida that the air conditioning vent probably hadn't been cleaned in a while, he completely ignored me. I might as well have complained to a wall. Can't be bothered to properly ventilate your office nor have your HVAC vents and filter(s) cleaned? Choose to completely ignore me (as in 100% ignore me) when I voice a legitimate complaint to you? Well, then I took one star off of your rating. The main part of Costco itself is very well-ventilated and has very little dust in the air. Therefore the contrast between Dr Doug Nishida's office and the main part of Costco is stark. 2) I subtracted a second star because although I did *not* request it, Dr Doug Nishida did *not* provide me with my PD (Pupillary Distance). Sure, I should have asked for my PD (Pupillary Distance). That was my fault. But frankly failing to provide patients with their PD (Pupillary Distance) appears to be a ploy optometrists seem to play to discourage people from ordering their glasses online. In fairness to Dr Doug Nishida, I suppose perhaps the Costco optical department probably prefers that Dr Doug Nishida only provide his patients with a PD (Pupillary Distance) if they request it. But see, well, um, here's the thing: as a customer that's not my concern. Measuring the PD (Pupillary Distance) takes a professional about 10 seconds. Yup. Ten whole seconds. Therefore, it should obviously be included in all eye examinations. TIPS ===== 1) If you find the office poorly ventilated (stuffy) and dusty like I did, you can fill out the simple paper form Dr Doug Nishida 's office requires as well as wait to be seen, a few steps outside of Dr Doug Nishida's office in the main part of Costco. 2) If you plan to order your glasses online like I do, be sure to ask for your PD (Pupillary Distance) or watch a YouTube video about how to have a family member or friend measure your PD (Pupillary Distance). I did not have vision insurance but needed more contacts. I searched around my area for exams that I could afford and ended up here. It helped that it was right down the street. I was seen promptly and everyone was very courteous. Dr. Nishinda was awesome. He answered all of my questions and concerns and updated by prescription. Most vision exams I have had have been a bit rushed and sometimes I haven't quite trusted the prescription. I have had an experience where I felt that could not see quite right for months. After repeatedly being told I would get used to the prescription, we found out they gave me the wrong prescription. Needless to say, I get a little nervous at optometrists after that experience. Dr. Nishida put me at ease and the whole process was so smooth. Even if I had vision insurance, I would definitely come back here. My contacts are also $20 cheaper through Costco than my previous optometrist. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Nishida practically since he opened his practice at Costco (even though he is not "in Network" He runs a great practice, and is very very thorough and gentle. But yesterday, he SAVED me!!!!! It was the end of the day, I had what felt like an eyelash stuck under my eyelid, which had really irritated the cornea for the last couple of days, but was getting better. I assumed it was on the mend, and just for due diligence thought I'd stop by and quickly ask the Doctor if he thought I ought to put a few drops of antibiotic liquid in for good measure,. It was the end of the day, and he was already past closing. But he sat me down and really as diligently as he always does, investigated the whole situation, and found a little something that had been stuck in there. Now that is a real doctor!!!! I realize how sad it is that this would warrant a special mention, but sadly I have a friend who almost lost an eye because of a Doc that kept her waiting 6 +hours, when she had clearly stated that she was in tremendous pain. And it got infected and turned out to be a month ordeal (which had started out as a minor discomfort) THANK YOU DR. NISHIDA FOR YOUR DEDICATION TO YOUR WORK, AND BEING SO KIND. It's been awhile since I last had a contact lens exam. One reason is because I stretch out those 2-week disposable contacts into 2 months, so it's not often that I need to order new contacts. Another reason is that my Rx for contacts hasn't changed in years and I've never enjoyed the hassle of going for an exam. But I had to use up some of my vision benefit before the end of 2008, so I made and appt. with Dr. Nishida for 2:30 on a Saturday. I was out the door by like 2:50. By far the quickest exam I've ever had. Dr. Nishida allows you to opt out of things like the glaucoma check, which saves time. Dr. Nishida is quick, professional and to the point. He even ordered some free samples of another type of lens for me. $89 for a contact lens exam. Although Dr. Nishida is located inside Costco, his office is a completely separated entity, so although they do accept MC/Visa, no AMEX. read more

My 12:30pm appointment started at 12:30pm, ended at ~1:00pm. - Dr. Nishida is very professional in manner and explains everything in language that a non-doctor can understand. - He also explains the purpose of every machine they put up to your eye. Never experienced that before. - Pricing is good. I think it was $69 for contact lens exam ($49 without contact lenses). Previous doctor I went to was $125 for exam and that was 7 years ago. - Told me in a very polite manner that I should see an eye doc more than once every 7 years. There are people who provide great customer service...then there's people like Lydia, the manager at Dr. Nishida's office (located conveniently inside the Costco Culver City Location) who go above and beyond the expectations of customer service. Seriously, I never want to go to any other optometrist ever again because I don't think anyone can live up to her standards. When I first went to Dr. Nishida's office, I was a little wary because it's located within a Costco. **NOTE: YOU DO NOT NEED A COSTCO MEMBERSHIP TO GET AN EYE EXAM** Because of its low price, I expected bad service and sub-par doctors. As I walked in, the girls helped me sign in and got me to see Dr.McNaughton pretty much immediately. He's a friendly professional who definitely knows what he's talking about. He gave me some samples and two boxes of solutions (my previous optometrist was really stingy and only gave them to me if I asked), and wrote a prescription for me. Sometimes optometrists try to push you to purchase lenses in their office, which always made me really uncomfortable, but not this one. Unfortunately, this prescription didn't work out for me so I came in again for another check up. He then ordered some samples for me (they didn't have my prescription sample lenses in stock) and gave me a few more boxes of solutions again. A week later, and I receive a phone call telling me that my sample contact lenses have arrived. I live in Westwood, and it's a bit of a drive to this Costco especially with horrible 405 traffic. Just to try my luck, I asked if they could possibly mail my sample contact lenses to my apartment. They didn't even hesitate and mailed my lenses out. However, due to some postage issues my contact lenses never made it to my apartment and actually got shipped back to them. Though this was a little inconvenient, this is where Lydia, the manager, REALLY surprised me. She offered to deliver the lenses herself to my apartment!!!!! She said she felt bad that I would have to spend Thanksgiving without any contact lenses. I didn't take her up on the offer immediately, but the following week I asked if she could deliver it, and there she was in front of my apartment IN THE POURING RAIN with a little Starbucks bag full of goodies (two solutions, one eye drop, and TWO different types of sample lenses in my prescription - I didn't even ask for this!!!!). WOW WAS I IMPRESSED!!!!!!!!!!! Unfortunately these prescriptions didn't work out for me either (darn eyes), and I called today to ask if I have to go into the office for another checkup or if I could possibly just talk to a doctor on the phone. Lydia picked up, listened to the issues I was having with my prescriptions (which by the way, this girl definitely knows her optometry. She knew exactly what symptoms I was trying to describe and was able to even make some suggestions herself). She then spoke to the doctor for me (I was on hold for only about 3 minutes, which is amazing compared to the 15+minutes I've waited on the phone with other doctors offices) and suggested a different brand, ordered the samples for me, then promised to ship them to me when they come in. If the medical world was full of professionals like Lydia, it would be a much better place. ALL of this customer service, and I have literally only paid for one eye exam. (Which is less than $100 for glasses + contact lenses). Usually doctors offices have only disappointed me in the past. Recently I had an eye issue. My eye was red, swollen, painful.... it felt like I had a huge cut in my eye. I had let it go for a few days, just thinking I had gotten something in it. BIG MISTAKE. One day I woke up and my eye had gotten worse. It was just so bad I was crying from pain, it was driving me crazy!! I needed to see someone, but didn't have much of a budget at the time. I called many doctors, and every opthamologist or optometrist was way overpriced or way out of my way. My mom had recommended Dr. Nishida, so I went to Costco's optometry center, and they set me up with an appointment. They informed me that Dr. nishida had other patients, but Dr. Oh his associate would be able to see me. I was given an appointment the same day. Oh, oh, OHHHHH am I glad I got to work with Dr. Oh! She's amazing. Not only was she the sweetest woman ever, she was just so professional, knowledgeable... and friendly! I was sooooo afraid to have my eye looked at... mainly because I was in so much pain, and anything pertaining to someone touching my eyes kinda freaks me out. She immediately put my fears at bay, and went to town. She did a thorough exam ($50 exams here, without insurance!) and found that I had some mucous membrane lining that was exfoliating and kind of scratching or rubbing my eye the wrong way. She numbed my eye with some drops... removed the lining (all within minutes) and gave me a prescription for some drops. She even gave me a sample of the drops to save me some money. I felt better from the moment I walked out of there! I came back a week later for my follow up appointment, and she said everything looked great. She has no idea how much she helped me, I had been irritated for over a week with my eye all red and pained. Highly recommended! read more

This review is purely on the front desk employees. Usually when you see a review written just for the front desk, you'd be like uh-oh were they rude? This is a rare case. I made my appointments (for me and my bf) without knowing they DO NOT take VSP insurance. Usually the front desk would be like psh and give you a bad look right? But instead she asked me nicely "so do you still want to see him?" and when I replied no she was like okay no problem (with a smile). Not only that, I contemplated a while outside and decided to go back in for some questions on their prices and contacts ordering. Even though they were busy with patients but they were still very professional and answered all my questions. Judging based on the front desk, I would believe Dr. Nishida is a great doctor. An optometry office wouldn't be a good one if their employees aren't helpful. If I don't have to use my VSP insurance, then I would definitely check this optometry out. Just saw him today and he's the best!! I'm usually never so chipper after a dr's appointment but he did it! He is so informative and super patient. I usually feel bad for asking doctors questions because they usually make me feel stupid or as if I'm wasting their time, but NOT Dr. NIshidia. He answered every question I had very thoroughly and speaks normal English without all the medical terminology (like many other Drs do) so I can understand!! He's the BEST!!
