Pacific Eye Care is now operated by Total Vision. I did not know this, all the signage says Pacific Eye Care or I would have gone elsewhere. Now, this review is not about their Optometry team, they might be great, I have no idea. I went in with a prescription for 3 glasses, needing 5 total. There selection was pretty good, not great, but I can't see so I really needed these glasses. They are a tad pricey, but that was also okay, as they promised me these glasses would be ready in a week and a half. I said, I'll give you two weeks, can you do it. I can't drive, I can't read. They promised that 1 and a half weeks would be plenty of time. Right. Almost a month later I called them and I got the "we were just about to call you" line, which you know is always false. They said my last pair just came in. I asked why they had not called when the first pair came in as I was very clear I could not drive or read. I got silence. I went in to get my glasses and waited close to 20 minutes Just for them to be fitted and put in a case. Now when I finally saw someone she was great, thus the 3 and not a 1 rating. She took care to fit the glasses right and put them all in cases--not the cases I thought I would have like the ones with the name of these expensive designer glasses I bought, but whatever. I won't be back. Don't make promises you can't keep, if there is an issue call the customer and don't make them call you, because having my husband drive me around is just so much fun and not at all a waste if his workday. read more

I have been going to Pacific Eye Care for years and saw Dr. Yumori. When he retired he brought in Dr. Arata. I find her excellent and her office staff to be extremely nice and efficient. On the comments about the required retinal exam for $39... I think this is cheap to get a doctor look at your overall eye health as opposed to just getting your Rx correct for your glasses. I don't know why they do this but my guess is that the doctors find out a lot with the pictures since they show everything... retina (might see small tears), blood vessels.....and they get a baseline. read more

Business has changed its management style with new doctors and new personnel. Goodbye personal touch. I have been a long time patient and they could not see me for my eye infection for two weeks. I called to say I was running late for my appointment before the time and had to get an uber. Literally around the corner before when they called to tell me my appointment was cancelled. I called back right away in front of the office and they said let's reschedule it meaning no in person today with anyone. They called 13 min after my appointment time and cancelled. I will not recommend this place and mention to the people that I have recommended the changes ever since the buy out. read more

The optometrist was fine, the exam was as expected. All the upsell and the fact that I couldn't get a copy of my prescriptions to take with me was annoying. They said all the patient files would be available online and someone would email me the link & password. It took about 6 separate phone calls to actually get a that link. That was frustrating but not enough to write a negative review. Cut to a year later, and I receive a card that they've made an appt on my behalf for another exam, and that if I don't cancel, I'd be charged a fee. Then I start receiving phone calls stating the same. I never realized optometry is an auto renewal or negative option billing service like an old school CD club or something you see on an infomercial. Terrible way to treat patients. read more

My wife and I have been going here for nearly a decade. Overall, the staff is extremely friendly and professional. The opthamologist and opticians have changed over the years, but the staff they hire usually are very solid. They also use the latest technology to test your vision and eye health. Location is also quite nice and there is street parking. Nearby are some good restaurants to check out, including Paco's tacos. If there is a negative, it's that their frames and lenses in office are very expensive. It's like going to a restaurant and ordering liquor only to find it ridiculously marked up. Much cheaper to get your frames and lenses online. You'll save about 60 to 70% from the in office options. read more

I have been coming to Pacific Eyecare for several years now after Dr. Matsumoto was recommended by my optometrist in the Bay Area. I am happy with the care I receive, although I only wear glasses and not contacts. Staff here is excellent. The office is meticulously clean, they take covid precautions seriously with their screening and mask policy, parking is easy (rooftop or curbside), and they are very organized/communicative. I like knowing that my appointment will be booked for me every October without me having to call. Dr. Matsumoto is easy to talk to and not robotic (like other health care providers can be) and I enjoy coming to get my eyes checked by him every year. They offer a large variety of frames (both Luxottica and non-Luxottica) in office. Heads up, the retinal imaging that was optional pre-COVID is now required ($39). read more

This place is big on the upsell. We used to go here for years and they always offered the $39 Optomap retinal image and we always declined it because it's not covered by our insurance. This week our teenager went on their own for an appointment and we specifically told them not to buy this service, but they charged her for it anyway. When I called to complain, they claimed that this is now a required fee with every eye exam and that they told her in advance. Believe me, my teen, who is new to being a savvy consumer but is otherwise, pretty smart, was NOT aware that they were going to force an extra charge in addition the eye exam. They also claimed that the retinal image is "required" for eye health even though they did the exams for years without requiring people to pay for storing the image. They did not really explain this in a clear way and I think this is a very dubious practice designed to maximize revenue from each client. I had stayed away for a couple years out of frustration with their upselling, but we thought we'd give them one more chance. Epic fail! Yes, they're nice, but please make sure they're not picking your pocket while they're being so very pleasant. They're part of some larger vision company now, and I'd bet they're some VC money behind it with algorithms to figure out exactly how to squeeze consumers out of their hard-earned dollars and get away with it. Dr. Don was amazing!!! I will definitely be coming back here for my eyecare needs. The staff here is friendly and accommodating. The equipment they use is very modern and they offer a wide selection of glasses. However, they do use the puff of air in your eye to measure eye pressure incase you don't care for that (but they do offer other options). You can either park on the street, or they have free parking on the roof. I would recommend that you always make an appointment before hand as all of their optometrists seem to be in high demand. Dr. Don was very thorough with my eye exam, and took the time to go over my diagnosis as well as the products available. In an age where doctors spend less and less time with patients and patients are defined by their insurance, it's refreshing to see that Dr. Don really cares for his patients and has a passion for his profession. read more

Been going here for quite a while. On Washington just west of centinela. All of the optometrists are very knowledgeable and they are good people. They have all the latest equipment to perform all the tests and they keep the results digitally for comparison. Their selection of frames is extensive and I usually get a little confused. I always ask their advice when I replace my frames. Their advice never fails me. After putting off getting new glasses for many years, I decided to chance Pacific Eyecare Center. My appointment and other transactions such as filling out medical and insurance forms were made using our cell phones and email. Upon my arrival, I had to answer a check list for covid. Everyone wore face masks and hand sanitizer was on hand. Surfaces were disinfected. I found PEC to be quick, efficient, and professional. Their office and equipment looked clean and up to date. Dr. Gandhi answered my questions to my satisfaction. Nigeisha (sp?) helped me find comfortable frames that I liked. My glasses have progressive lenses and are quite thin. No more coke bottles for me. The frames were minimal and stylish. I returned once for a frame adjustment. So far I have been happy with service I received at PEC. read more

I've had my annual vision exam at Pacific Eyecare for well over 30 years, and my wife for nearly as long. So, I was really pissed when I went in today and was told that the $39 retina imaging was no longer an option, even though insurance doesn't cover it. Seems that their regular examination fee and profit on the lenses and frames is not adequate. (This place is not cheap.) I was extremely unhappy and asked the receptionist to speak with Dr. Matsumoto about allowing me to continue to decline that separate fee as I have in the past. I explained that I won't be forced to pay for something I don't want, and that I would find a new optometrist if the office could not meet my needs. When she came back, I was essentially told the new compulsory fee is "policy". The implication being that the owners of the company cannot make exception as "policy" is the ultimate interface between the business and the customers. To me, this is the very essence of arrogance and disregard for the very foundation of their business, the need to satisfy their customers. Did I mention that I'm pissed? I mean, really pissed. I walked and will find an optometrist who is genuinely concerned about the needs and wishes of the clients. There must still be some of those. read more

I've been going to this optometry business for several years - and have mostly had a positive experience, although I'll agree with other negative reviews that mention the "upsell" problem that they have. The major issue from my most recent visit was that they didn't tell me that they no longer accept VSP for insurance. In fact, it wasn't until I requested new lenses for two pairs of glasses that I have that I was even informed of this - not when they emailed me about my upcoming appointment, not when I spoke to someone on the phone when they had to change the time of my appointment, not when I filled out the online paperwork which included my insurance information, and not when I showed up for my appointment. It wasn't until the very end, when I was already feeling somewhat committed to having them do the lenses (because there's effort involved in finding a new optometrist, as well as time needed to go to a second place to have the work done) that I discovered my lenses would cost about $400 instead of the usual VSP insurance rate of about $50-$60. I think it's pretty crappy to not tell people that you've dropped their insurance until they're already well into the appointment. read more

There are so many options for eye care services and Optometrists in West LA, whatever you do, please DO NOT use Pacific EyeCare Center. One of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had (and I've had some awful ones to say the least). This being my first Yelp review says a lot because I'm usual one to give others the benefit of the doubt. I've been going to Pacific Eyecare Center for the past 2 years. This year I needed to renew my prescription for my eyeglasses. I brought in my favorite pair of glasses that I've had for a few years now: Oliver Peoples O'Malley (retail $380). I agree to sign a waiver stating that if anything happens to my glasses during the lens exchange process, they are not liable. Which was totally fine by me because I knew it would be a low risk gamble. However I specifically requested that they don't adjust my frames because they were already perfect and I don't like the shape of the arms when they're adjusted. I get my glasses back, everything is fine with the new lenses however the arms are adjusted exactly the way I didn't want them to be. So i request that they fix their mistake by straightening out the arms back to their original form. They rightfully agree to my request. About 20 minutes later an employee comes out with my glasses in hand. This time they're broken; completely snapped in 2. The employee subsequently apologizes to me and says that unfortunately there's nothing that can be done except grant me 20% off in their store. This was late on a Friday so I figured I'll call back Monday to speak to a manager. Monday comes, I call them back, and speak to a manager. After several back and forths the manager reiterates that there is nothing that can be done except a 30% maximum discount in their store (a measly 10% more than my original offer). So I'm out $380 (plus tax) and the only thing they're willing to do to atone the situation is allow me give them more business in their store? NO THANKS. read more

Its a convenient location and I do believe they have good doctors. Some of the employees are very very nice and some no so much. This last time I was there to pick-up a replacement contact lense for my husband. They were VERY nice. They ordered the contact-lense and expedite it for him. We greatly appreciated it. The parking is easy. I was able to park right in front of the office, go in and out in less than 15 minutes. A few days before I went to pick-up a temporary lense (while we waited for the order to come-in) and I had a equally easy parking/pick-up-experience. The staff at the front is a little "sales" oriented. Almost bullish. Unfortunately this last time I went, I felt harassed to commit my husband to come-in for an appointment to get a new prescription. Even after I told her that I can't speak for him and that booking an appointment is something she needs to talk to him directly - she kept on pushing the issue with me. I am not sure if she gets a bonus on how many appointments she books. It was a little out of the normal. When I was getting the contact-lense she told me that I owed $95 dollars. I asked her if she had ran it through the insurance - and she said no. I asked her if there was a reason - and she went back to the same.... "he needs to come-in for an appointment". I wasn't sure what the insurance had to do with the appointment. After several questions - I finally understood that the reason she wanted me to pay for the lense is because her vision of what needed to happen included my husband coming-in for an appointment and ordering glasses and because the insurance only pays for glasses OR lenses - it was her determination that I should pay for the contact lense out of pocket, so that he could order glasses later. The problem here is that she never asked us what we preferred and my husband does not work glasses (only contacts). At the end-- she ran it through the insurance (which took here less than 5 minutes) and it was all taken care of. read more

I was a patient for years (previously saw Dr. Yumori who is perfectly nice, competent, and professional) and then two coworkers recommended I see Dr. Matsumoto instead. They RAVED about him and well, since switching to him, I need to RAVE about him, too! Dr. Matsumoto is AMAZING. It was super easy to schedule an appointment. I didn't wait long. He was very attentive and super, super nice and friendly. He has a sing-song voice that isn't irritating - it's actually entertaining, and a warm smile. He is very welcoming and so, so helpful. He suggested that I get prescription sunglasses because it's been 11 years since I had LASIK and my eyesight is slightly challenged. :( I got a wonderful pair of COACH aviator sunglasses for $6 (because I used my husband's and my insurance). If I had to give up/replace every medical professional in my life, and could keep only one, I would keep Dr. Don Matsumoto. I can find new doctors and dentists and such but Dr. Matsumoto is a real gem. My family and I have been patients since 2005. He's affable and interesting and describes the details of your eyes with the joy, fascination, and excitement of a kid at Christmas. I think the only things that make him happier are his own family... and the Dodgers. The office is super clean and the staff are awesome. For those Yelpers surprised by their bill, I have learned to stagger some of the non-insurance-covered-fees (e.g., Optomap). Just ask when you check in. Last thought: I scratched my cornea in Vegas and spent a very painful night. At 6 am I called Dr. Matsumoto on his cell and he called in a prescription to relieve the blinding pain. Very happy to have ended up here after giving up on my previous optometrist. The associate listened to my concerns and selected frames that were exactly what I wanted, but didn't know existed. My prescription is so strong that glasses on me end up being heavy and uncomfortable to wear but these frames are 3-D printed and ridiculously light. He even took the extra step to explain the parts of my retina scans and why he was giving my eyes a clean bill of health - I've never had an eye doctor walk me through the analysis step by step before and it was really informative. They did a great job! The exam was easy and the environment was comfortable. The doctor walked me through what my prescription meant as well as any possible future concerns with my eyes and prescription. They have a good selection of frames and were able to calculate the price with and without insurance. I did not purchase frames on the day, but they took the measurements they would need for a few different frame options so that if I decided to buy them I would not have to come in again. Pacific Eye Care is suffering from all the physical manifestations of corporate bloat. I wish I had trusted the negative reviews on this site (and others) before booking an appointment. I would have saved myself a lot of time and money. This is what you need to know before deciding to do business here: Pros: -Free rooftop parking -They take sanitation and other safety precautions seriously, including asking if you're fully vaccinated. -If you already know your prescription or have a straightforward and uncomplicated prescription that requires basic optometry skills, you'll probably get what you need depending on who you book. Cons: (no pun intended) -Pricing is arbitrary and hidden; it's not posted, clearly communicated, or explained. -Quotes aren't honored; don't expect an explanation for that, either. -They use sales tactics like being evasive when questioned about costs, limiting conversation, moving you from room to room, and of course the give-away of not looking you in the eye when they're lying. -You'll subsidize their training program by paying full price (or more) for a doctor who has less than two full months' worth of experience. (I'm looking at you Pedroza.) Yes, you read that right. The ink on Dr. Pedroza's diploma is still wet. Her solution to my vision issue was categorically stupid (see below). To add insult to injury, she charged me almost $70 more than what I was quoted for an exam and contacts. -Expect a rushed experience, because when your time is up it's up, regardless of whether or not you've been property fitted and are happy with the results. -The last time I visited this office was over 10 years ago and they claim my records are no longer in their database, yet somehow they knew about a rare allergy that was diagnosed only 2 years ago. They don't even take a patient history -- but there it is in my online chart. (Don't bother removing it guys, I've already archived. Revisionist history won't help you if I decide to pursue this.) No other health information is listed, just that allergy. There's absolutely no reason why that should be there and I'm curious why it is. Over 10 years ago, Dr. Matsumoto fitted me with contacts. He tried several different types of lenses to make sure I was happy with the results. And I was. His experience is worth the $354, that might even be a bargain, but Dr. Pedroza's is most definitely not. Maybe it will be someday, but today it is not. My prescription is rather unusual. One eye sees extremely well for reading, while the other works perfectly for distance. I don't typically need any correction, as the dominant eye easily switches between right and left depending on the task at hand. The problem is my eyes get tired easily, and the glare of bright lights bother me when driving at night. So I decided to try contacts again, hoping to ease eye strain while reading and to sharpen my night vision. Dr. Pedroza's brilliant solution was to switch the task for each eye. That's somewhat like telling a right-handed surgeon they can now only use their left. Don't expect good results. Multifocal lenses might have worked for me but I wasn't given a chance to try them even though I asked. Instead, Dr. Pedroza tried only one set of contacts on me and decided that was good enough. Once in the car I couldn't see to use my phone because the lens was the wrong curvature on one eye and it kept moving around and blurring, so I took them out and could see again! I had asked Dr. Pedroza to fix it but her response was there were other patients waiting and that I could call in a few days if I was still having problems. She gave me a few samples of the lenses that didn't work then billed me $354 for wasting my time, and that didn't include the contacts which I was led to believe would be included when I made the appointment. Now they want an additional $110 to fix their mistake. Avoid this place or suffer the consequences. Their unethical business practices are going to hit you hard in the wallet and leave you angry enough to seek satisfaction. But if you're like me and decide to ignore the warnings then at least ask a lot of questions so you know what you're getting yourself into, and verify that information at check in and again with the nurse, and again with the doctor. I've seen Dr. Matsumoto and Dr. Gandhi during the past few years and both are true professionals who explain complex details of eye health in easily understandable terms. My visit today was to correct an existing prescription (written by an OD at an unrelated office) for near-field vision which had caused rectangular objects to appear shorter on the right side. Dr. Gandhi's patience and attention to every detail seemed endless and I await my new lenses with eager anticipation. To the credit of the staff who reflect the professionalism of the office, my call for an appointment to see Dr. Gandhi was made at 10:00 am this morning and I was being examined by him at 2:45 pm this afternoon. I rarely see such commitment to service and although I don't write reviews of businesses I frequent, Pacific Eyecare has warranted an exception and a 5-star rating. read more
