I wasn't able to attend my appointment due to needing to reschedule, so I can't speak to the quality of care itself. My concern was with the front desk communication. The first time I needed to cancel, I called but no one answered, so I emailed within the 24-hour policy. A few days later, I received a call back and was told to 'please call next time if you want to cancel,' even though I had attempted to call and had emailed. The call ended abruptly after that, which felt odd. When I later needed to reschedule again due to work, I called and was asked why I was rescheduling a second time and told I would be flagged if it happened again. On both calls, the tone felt annoyed and dismissive, as though I had done something wrong by rescheduling, despite following their stated policy. I understand cancellation policies, but I've never been made to feel that way for rescheduling an appointment before. read more

This office was able to get me in pretty quickly, which I very much appreciate. Dr. Hoff was so nice and thorough in the exam and explanation of everything. I was able to leave with a new prescription, a fresh pair of contacts, and the rest of my contacts to be mailed to my house within a few days. 10/10. My husband and I have been going to Dr. Hoff for years now and I cannot say nicer things about both him and Luis (who assists him M-F). We have been going to him for not just eye exams but also for amazing frames. We have frames that are 3-4 years old that still look in pristine condition. And, we have purchased a couple of extra over the years because Hoff has such a unique selection of designer frames from all over the world. The nicest part about going here is that we live locally and whenever we need an adjustment or need any repairs on the frames, Luis helps us out! I've had the good fortune to work with Dr. Hoff for a few years now. I originally found him via fantastic online reviews and find it only fitting to add one of my own. Dr Hoff is dedicated to his profession and patients alike. I moved back to CA last year and needed a new script. I had no idea how comprehensive a full exam can and should be. When all was said and done, Dr. Hoff explained to me every aspect of the tests and results. I was back yesterday to discuss come challenges I was having with my script due to me computer setup. I've been in software for 25 years and work over 8 hours an online. Dr. Hoff quickly performed a refactor based upon his learning of my 30" focal point to my 36" curved monitor. He then preposed progressive lenses so I could use the same glasses for my computer and up close reading. I've only worn reading glasses now for 3 years, so it's all very new to me. But, what I do know now, is that I wouldn't trust my vision and optical needs to anyone else other than Dr. Hoff. I recommend him without any reservations! I've waited a bit for this review as it is mixed. I really liked Dr. Hoff, he is professional and personable. His exam was complete and he was knowledgeable about not just vision but also eye health. That's the good part. CAVEAT: I've lived in Venice, right off Abbott Kinney, for years, so I knew he would be expensive, but his exam was very reasonably priced. So, the exam as great...but then the problems began. I didn't want to get my frames there, I like the price and selection of Warby Parker down the street. So I got my frames there. I took the frames back to Hoff for the prescription. I have progressives, have had for years, so I know they are usually $300-$500 to fill...I was expecting that. The price Marilyn quoted was $730!! In for a penny, in for a pound. My mistake in not going elsewhere for the lenses. When the lenses come back, I go to pick them up. There are numbers, very visible, etched on both lenses, and I can barely see out of one of my eyes. Marilyn tells me it's normal, all the lenses from their lab look like that. I go home and figure it'll take me a few days to get used to it. It didn't. I still can't see out of one of my eyes. I make an appointment to go back to see Dr. Hoff. He reexamines my eyes and discovers that he transcribed one of the numbers...that's why the vision in one of my eyes was so blurry for a week. And he can't explain the numbers etched on the lenses. They redo the glasses. I pick them up and they're better, but not perfect. Dr. Hoff never apologized or offered any sort of compensation. They treated the mistakes like they were normal business practice. At this point, I'm guessing the lab he uses is sub-par, so I don't want them to keep remaking the lenses again. At a certain point, you cut your loses and chalk it up as a learning opportunity. I'm thinking of getting them remade somewhere else, just writing off the almost $1000 I've spent at Hoff Optometry, so I contacted Marilyn for a copy of the corrected RX for the glasses. I email her three times asking for the RX. Nothing. I call her and ask her for the RX. Nothing. My exam was in early August. Still no RX. Still wearing my $10 readers from CVS for reading and computer. Still disappointed that Hoff Optometry seems so disinterested once your credit card charge goes through. read more

I came across Hoff Optometry while on my insurance website (Aetna). Went to the website and I was impressed with the professional but hip appearance. I decided to check them out and immediately I had a good impression. It's small and the staff are very friendly. The choice of frames are great! Not the average designer brand frames you see at most stores. They were hands on in helping me find the right frames for my face and were determined not to let me buy the frames I originally walked in wanting because they just weren't right for me. After settling on a beautiful pair of Moscots in a cool matte black, I made am appoinent for my eye exame. It was very comprehensive and seemed like more than I had ever experienced at any other optometrist. The office felt like a cross between a fancy designer store and the Apple Store. Over all the experience was outstanding! Dr Hoff made me feel at home, as we conversed about his business, my recent move to LA and a host of different things. He's deffenately the cool Dr. not the stuffy white lab coat wearing ones I'm used to. I wish I knew more people in LA to recommend to him but I will just have to settle for Yelp to sing his praises for me. read more

I just had my first appointment with Dr. Hoff and I highly recommend him! He was very thorough and helpful. I thought that I had been given the wrong prescription at a past appointment with another doctor, but after working with Dr. Hoff, it seems like my eyes just weren't cooperating with my previous contacts. He was extremely patient as I tried on numerous contacts to find the ones that would work for my eye (we found them!). I managed to rip my contact into several pieces in my eye by rubbing it rigorously. I'd successfully fished out a couple parts, but felt there were some pieces remaining behind the eyeball. After 30 minutes of attempting to fish the rest out, I slept on it and woke up to try again. No success. I looked up the nearest optometrist and was able to get a same-day appointment. The whole experience took no more than 5 minutes, and the doctor was very friendly, gentle, and kind. Very chill atmosphere. Also, there's a dog that looks like an ewok in the lobby, so that helped ease my anxiety. read more

Dr. Hoff is thorough and doesn't rush your appointments. He also takes the time to explain what the test results are for the various eye exams administered, so I always feel very informed on what's going on with my eyes (health and vision). The entire team, Luis and Marilyn have fantastic etiquette and a great memory for patient names and needs. I love that I get text updates for appointment reminders, contact pick-up times, etc. and the business hours are such that I can typically make it into an appointment or stop by to pick up my contacts without any interference with work. In the last few years I've seen Dr. Hoff, there was a small window of a few months where I was without insurance. Dr. Hoff still saw me and charged a very reasonable out-of-pocket fee for my visit. While the place is rated as "$$$", I never balk at the pricing for visits, contacts, and eyewear because it's always felt very well worth it for the kind of care he and the staff provide. Being born cross-eyed and having two corrective surgeries in my younger years left me with an 'as good as it gets' mentality, especially after several optometrists gave me prescriptions that made my eyes cross again. Hoff knew exactly what to do during that initial exam and restored my trust and vision. Now I can see clearly out of both eyes and even have more depth and periphery out of my weak eye. Astonishing! I am writing to update my previous 5 star review of Dr Hoff. I first saw James Hoff where he fitted me for a pair of contact lenses thirty years ago. I was a tough patient because I was sensitive to even half a di-opter of wrong correction. He was the only optometrist who hung in with me until I got the right lenses. He was caring, conscientious and patient. He's still that these days, IF you have the cash. If you're willing to drop $700 to a $1000 for a pair of glasses then he's the guy for you. First off there is the condescending and not-nearly-as-smart-as-she-thinks-is, store manager Marilyn. Reading other reviews, I see that other people also have had problems with Marylin, who let's face it, is a rude cow. The the nearly invisible sign on the storefront should have tipped me off. I once asked James why his sign was so hard to see and he said, "to keep out the riff-raff." Meaning he wasn't interested in walk-ins who didn't have the cash and would waste his time, hence the pretentious/exclusive vibe of the place. Alas, that's what I became to James too -- annoying riff-raff. I'd still go to him for checkups but now, being a retiree on a fixed income, I had to get my glasses elsewhere. Once he realized that, his attitude literally changed from friendly to snippy and disdainful. Never mind the thirty year plus year relationship. My worth to him was now only monetary and therefore zilch. Reading other reviews, I see that even spending a lot of money doesn't always get you good service or good results. They and their lab make mistakes and then are less than willing to apologize and take responsibility. Even if you had the cash, I wouldn't risk it. read more

Brought my family here today for eye exams and Dr. Hoff was very thorough and able to answer all of my husband's concerns and explain my daughter's condition and steps that would be taken. The staff was incredibly friendly and professional as well... Marilyn did a tremendous job of making recommendations and was very knowledgeable explaining our options based on our conditions with choosing our glasses and not to mention was able to find the perfect frame for each one of us. First of all, this is a clean, sleek shop with some high-end eyewear. The space is very nice as one would expect on Abbott Kinney. I called Hoff Optometry seven days ago to make an appointment for a an eye exam. I spoke with a woman who was quick and efficient. We agreed upon the following Wed at 3pm and I hung up. Today, 7 days later, I walked into Hoff for the first time, 15 minutes early for my appointment. I was greeted warmly by the receptionist and asked my name. I replied, he looked puzzled and asked me my name again. I repeated. He politely explained that he didn't see me on the schedule. I scrolled through my phone, found the call and gave him the date/time I booked the appointment. He looked through their digital caller-ID and confirmed that he had a record of my call, but there was no appointment for me. So the woman on the phone last week probably failed click the button and confirm it in their computer system. Mistakes happen. But what occurred next is the reason I believe Hoff failed. The receptionist conferred with a female manager who briefly glanced around the corner at me and spoke. I explained again that I had a confirmed appointment at 3pm and that I booked it 7 days ago. She went back around the corner and spoke to the receptionist out of my line of sight. The manager never returned. But the receptionist explained that they were already booked for the afternoon. His solution...Hoff would gladly schedule an appointment for another day. Uh-huh. I scheduled appropriately, left my office early and arrived 15 minutes ahead of my appointment time. But Hoff's only solution (which did not include an apology) was to inconvenience me. I am also a professional, just like Dr Hoff. I have a staff of people and clients who depend on me. I made an appointment in advance and arrived early. So I don't think it was unreasonable to expect someone to see me this afternoon, even if it meant a delay. Yet the only option I was offered was to reschedule and leave. I declined. I chose Hoff because of the good Yelp reviews and because I live in the neighborhood. But customer service is important to me, and Hoff failed today. The manager never bothered to come to the reception area, speak with me directly and take responsibility. Mistakes are inevitable in any business, but it is important to take responsibility and work with customers to find agreeable solutions. Hoff made no attempt to do this today. read more

Dr. Hoff rocks!!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM. It is so difficult to find good doctors in LA, whether it be for medical, dental or eye. I just had a horrible experience with Dr. Estelle Herron (a completely different office/business). I found Dr. Hoff through Yelp because he's not too far away from my home. And he was nice enough to schedule me the same day and give me a 2nd opinion refraction exam on a recent prescription by Herron that wasn't working for me. He spent almost an hour with me, going through multiple lense tests and finally figured out that my prescription for my distance glasses was too strong, causing my eyes to strain, which was giving me headaches and nausea and finally fatigue. Dr. Herron said I needed eye glasses, but I might not even need them. This fix from Dr. Hoff in my distance glasses may solve all my problems. Either way, Dr. Herron definitely prescribed me wrong reading glasses a week ago. I had A LOT of questions for Dr. Hoff and he helped me understand the eye glass business a little better - like when you buy lenses 3.5 months ago, the store you buy them from should replace them at no cost if the prescription is not correct. He wants his patients to be happy and be able to see correctly, so he will work with you to make sure you can. I will definitely be coming to see Dr. Hoff for all my annual visits and in the future with any problems. He's extremely knowledgable about all types of glasses, and gave me a rundown on Progressives (which again, I may not need now). And he seems quite reasonable too with exam fees. He's also humorous and has great bedside manner (or eye glass chair exam manner). Don't look any farther - if you need a great Optometrist, Dr. Hoff is it! read more

I have always hated going to any medical facility. It's inconvenient, people are often rude, you feel less healthy leaving than you did on your way in. I've come to Hoff for over a year now. Without a doubt, they have the best medical operation/facility i've experienced in my 33 years. Marylin, the optician and receptionist has such a warm, welcoming presence. I've never had to wait to see the doctor. They handle what are usually the annoyances of getting any medical work done with such positivity and professionalism. They effortlessly handle the insurance, replacing very lightly scratched lenses (for FREE), ordering new contacts (for $160 less than 1800 Contacts). I get compliments on my glasses from Hoff (Bevel) all the time after being embarrassed to wear any pair previously (I have an extremely strong prescription). Dr. Hoff cares about his patients. The place is super clean and has the latest equipment. It turns out, that really does improve your overall experience in medical. Their latest piece of equipment let me get my eye health exam done in seconds. This used to require dilation of the eye and was super inconvenient--you lose half your day to headache and light sensitivity. Instead, you get instant feedback, a beautiful nebulae-like high resolution image of your entire eye. But this street is also a runway for people to show off and it contains tons of snobbish attitude...I always claim that I just live here - but that's about it.
