I went to see Dr. Stephey several months after I suffered from a concussion. Before seeing him, I had already done some vision therapy at a separate office and seen two neuro-optometrists with not much relief from my visual symptoms. When I went to see Dr. Stephey, he did testing on me that no other doctor had done. He was not just looking at my visual symptoms, but also how to get my entire body reconnected together. It was very wonderful and I was very happy with the visit. He prescribed me prism lenses and they are already shifting my vision, body and brain in a major way. They are helping to relieve my issues, though I am still adjusting to them. Dr. Stephey is a next level optometrist. We have worked with some of the best developmental optometrists over the years, but I am so impressed with Dr. Stephey. I first started seeing Dr. Stephey many years ago when my family lived in Covina. He is very personable, professional and helpful. He is extremely knowledgeable and always takes the time to explain things. This review is to attest to the life-transformational treatment that Dr. Stephey had provided to my 16 year old cousin. Born with certain ocular limitations, which was diagnosed as high Astigmatism and Amblyopia (lazy eyes) at the age of 3, my cousin struggled all his life with menial activities ranging from attending school to driving a car or taking the SAT. None of the prescription glasses his numerous eye doctors had prescribed could correct for the sharp, jarring "starbursts", that his eyes perceived from normal light sources such as lamps, headlights, or even TV's. They, also, could not correct for his inability to read the chalkboard in a classroom as his condition wasn't simply due to near-sightedness. As such, he was forced to learn and see through "hearing", which hindered his development through nearly half of high school before meeting Dr. Stephey. Learning through hearing, basically translated into "self-visualizing" what he was trying to see by relying on his ears. Consequently, he frequently misinterpreted his surroundings. We had taken him to numerous ophthalmologists and optometrists, including an osteopathic specialist in Fullerton over the course of 12 years, but they could only prescribe correctional lenses or practices such as "patching" (covering one eye at a time) or playing video games to stimulate the ocular muscles. Upon being referred to Dr. Stephey, certain tests were performed that had never been done by previous physicians and lenses with a certain film coating were prescribed. Instantly, he could read the chalkboard, his grades shot up within weeks, and he scored high on his very first SAT exam 10 months later. My cousin's attention span also improved as he was previously expending far too much energy during the day to "see" what other kids could see without strain. That physical strain had forced him to take daily naps to recover. Not only can he now read and drive, but he is even eligible for Lasik surgery, which all his previous physicians had stated could not be performed. read more

I was super excited to see Dr. Stephey as he was referred by a co-worker to help with possible learning disability.   1. I called and spoke to Dr. Stephey and he said he would call me right back, he did not, so 3 days later I called again and left a v/m. 2. Spoke to Dr. Stephey and he was nice, spoke to me on the phone, gave me an appointment and told me I would pay $120 and go from there. I was excited. 3. Showed up for scheduled appt. and Dr. Stephey said I was not on the schedule, and although I was double booked he managed to see me, in between patients. 4. As Dr. Stephey did some testing, he got super frustrated with me (as I did the instruction incorrectly because I had earphones on, and he had mask on and I misunderstood). So I asked him to clarify instructions as I was doing it wrong. "He said "why did you do it that way, your doing it wrong, didn't you hear me." I said, sorry no, I had the earphones on when you gave me instructions as you asked me to put them on.  Later through testing, I did a foot test different than others, and he questioned me why I moved my foot further into the room, after he had moved the mat, and I said "because I did not want to hit the door when I was doing test. I could tell he was frustrated and I just cried through the test.   5. When we were done, he said do you have any questions for me? I said " I have some thoughts, I could tell you got super frustrated with me, I am a professional, coming to you for help, and when you get frustrated, then how are you going to help me, as I feel the tension and your frustrations." He did say, "I apologize, but you come with a lifelong of baggage so it makes sense you may feel overwhelmed. Let's get the tests back from Stoewell and see what else I can do, then you can decide who you go with." I have never felt so dumb in my life, as people have told me there is no hope if a learning disability is not treated as a child, I had hope he could help me, as he was referred.  I am so bummed with my experience with him, I pray that others don't have to go through this. read more

I was diagnosed with Brain cancer June 21st, 2005. I underwent 4 brain surgeries, 4 cycles of chemotherapy, 15 rounds of radiation, and 2 years at an acquired brain injury school. He brought to my attention that I am living in constant "fight mode" due to my brain and eye function and I no longer need to suffer with this or the many symptoms that come with being in constant "fight mode". He could trigger the negative symptoms I feel and then make them go away by having me put on the treatment/prescriptions in the exam room. It was such a trip how the stress literally melted away with these special glasses he was having me put on. Upon completion of my exam my treatment was not your usual glasses prescription. I now have this wonderful blue hue (tint) added to my glasses along with prism. I truly felt he cared for me and wanted to help improve my overall quality of life not just my vision alone. We originally chose another optometrist in the area who specializes in vision processing disorders because my son has been struggling for *years* with reading comprehension, spelling within sentences/paragraphs, as well as handwriting, focus, and many others. We chose this other provider simply because they were in network with our insurance. Huge mistake in terms of customer service, quality, and our overall experience. Vision issues, short of visual acuity, feel so intangible, especially when you are diagnosing/treating children. If an optometrist and his staff aren't able to fill out paperwork correctly, or return a call when they say they will, then how do I know without a doubt that they are being thorough in my son's diagnosis and treatment plan? I immediately booked an appointment with Dr. Stephey for my son. Right away, Dr. Stephey began emailing me resources, questionnaires, and answering all of my various questions. Our appointment went smoothly, and I loved that I was in the room to see how and why the different tests were performed. He explained each outcome at length, and addressed every question I had in a way that made complete sense to me, and in terms of what I have been experiencing with my son and his struggles academically. Additionally, his knowledge of the law as it relates to education/special education services is irreplaceable. I feel like I've been standing at the top of a mountain for three years now yelling for help on behalf of my son. Three years ago I brought my youngest son in to see Dr. Stephey. His office staff was very professional and courteous. Dr. Stephey listened as I explained the problems my son was experiencing. He began to do several tests and tried several different techniques with my son, then he worked on the glasses. My son's eyes were red after school and he was seeing letters that were not clear. He was a remedial reader and in a pull out program at school. He was about 1.5 years below grade level. Our family found Dr. Stephey about 4 years ago. I was amazed at how knowledgeable he was about learning and how he seemed to know certain things that our boys were struggling with. I went to Dr. Stephy because he spends more time with you than any other eye doctor I've been too. The ones I've seen the past 10 years at Costcos or the mall optometrists just rush you through the appointment without any ideas to what could be causing my fatigue, dizziness and inability to concentrate. Dr. stephy checks for different eye conditions. Not just pure lens check or general eye health, but muscular and focus problems. My not being able to concentrate while working on the computer or reading was due to my glasses not having prism and a tint. I seriously 'gasped' when he asked me to read a book with my normal glasses, then next with his correction. The words on the book were not annoying to read anymore (shaky, double vision) and I can focus on what I was reading. He also showed me certain exercises to lesson the fatigue and nausea I was experiencing day to day. I've been seeing Dr Stephey off and on for the past few years for double vision. This is the most well informed specialist I have EVER met. He has tons of articles he offers to share. His passion for his patients can't be compared. There are very few that specialize in this field. I was blessed. His bedside manners are impeccable. He is extremely compassionate and not in it for the money. He takes many insurances. I have Kaiser and it wouldn't cover the visits so I paid out of pocket. The diagnostic evaluation fee is reasonable. He provided me the vision therapy program and even installed it in my computer. I was able to get overlays for my eye strain. He didn't charge me anything for that. I was able to text this doctor directly. Very few specialists do this. This Doctor is God sent. For those who struggle with vision and academics, he is THE specialist. He's well versed with IEP and the bureaucracy of the school system. He will fight tooth and nail to get the student what they deserve. Appointments are not hard to get. Just make sure to be on time. He's fully booked and has patients back to back. My incredibly bright, loving, creative 8 yr old son has struggled to read as the font size became smaller and text on page became more dense. Off I went to a Facebook moms group for my homeschool charter to see what the collective mom wisdom could offer. One mom said to investigate whether my son had a visual processing disorder and another mom recommended Dr. Stephey so I checked out his website, made an appointment for the kiddo and another for me (I have migraines). If you have a child that is bright and yet struggles with reading (either always or suddenly as font size and type are getting smaller & denser with more advanced texts), who acts out, can't focus, is always up and touching things, easily frustrated, says they're a dummy or stupid because they can't do what a sibling/friend can do or doesn't get it despite hours of repetition and practice, you need to see Dr. Stephey. In the first 7 minutes of testing he'd already determined that the kiddo's brain doesn't synchronize the slightly different images presented by left and right eye into one cohesive image -- they aren't working as a yoked team. Within 20 minutes he'd determined the kiddo's brain was trying to shut down the data stream from one eye to allow for better processing of data from a single source. Colored lens and prism lens didn't seem to have any effect on the kiddo and his vision tested at 20/20. We're pursuing more detailed testing through the IEP process with our public charter school but I'm confident we're on the right track and the kiddo will be soooooooooo much better off with vision therapy -- I'm impatient to get him started. But I've got a lot of reading to do as well -- Dr. Stephey has already sent me over a dozen articles, checklists, and abstracts to read so I can understand what's happening and best help the kiddo. As for me, I started getting migraines when I was 16 yrs old (over 30 yrs ago) and I've learned my triggers are intense bright light/glare directly into my eyes with stress and some level of dehydration. 10 minutes into my 30 min appointment, Dr. Stephey pulled out the horrible optical drum with a black & white vertical stripe pattern that makes my brain hurt. He noted that I immediately grimaced, closed my eyes, turned my head and started biting on my lower lip. He gave me the prism lens and blue tint lens and told me to hold them over my eyes then showed me the drum again -- no reaction at all even when he spun it slowly... It was amazing. My distance prescription was updated, I got a prescription for reading glasses and both new pairs will have both tint & prism. I should get them in 7-10 days and then I can get busy reading all the information Dr. Stephey is sending me about the kiddo and his brain. Regardless of how old you are or what optometrists have told you about your vision in the past, if you have any kind of reading or vision problem or your children have one, get yourself to Dr. Stephey -- he will change your world for the better. My life was changed 12yrs ago in a car accident. I deal with a traumatic brain injury that has left my balance/vestibular system unreliable. Some of the things that have changed in the 1st week w/new glasses: the blue tint has taken the harshness out of light. Driving at night, the head and street lights no longer star & I am able to look ahead while driving (I know...).
