i though dr. ngai was a good eye specialist doctor but i was wrong a year after i had dr. ngai remove my cateracts i notices my vision and my balance started to act up and even with twice a year exams at his office he would tell tell me he does not see anything wrong from the examination of my eyes i notices my vision and my balance was getting worst every year and i fell because of my balance issues and didnt see him because of the fall after five years my vision and balance became so bad i tried making appointment to see him again just to be told that because i didnt see him for over a year i am now consider now a new patient and that he isnt taken new patients now so i went to another eye specialist and was xray and they show me that the lenses that was implanted after the cateracts was removed show tissue growth on both from my cateract surgery why didnt Dr. Ngai see it or test me for issues after cateract removal i would had not fallen if he did thats why i am writing this review on him he fail me completely and I just want to let other patients like me who had cateracts removed from him to know to not depend on him when it comes to any problems after surgery read more

My family and I LOVE Dr. Ngai, his staff Erick and Krystina who helped us so much caring for my brother. I have met with a lot of doctors in my profession and also personally as I often take my parents and family members to visit all kinds of specialists. I am forever grateful not only for the best glaucoma treatment that Dr. Ngai has provided for my brother but also for his going above and beyond the call of duty as he listened to all the concerns that my brother had and patiently explained things to calm him down. I am an attorney and read many documents and need good eyesight. I went to an ophthalmologist from a large eye group (Foothill Eye Group), and it was very impersonal. There, I was just a number. Cataract surgery was delayed several months because one of their doctors went to another eye group and the scheduler had to reschedule surgery as if I had never been there before. Very poor service! Went to Philip Ngai, MD & Peter Chen, MD., San Gabriel Valley Eye Group and I consulted with Doctor Lin. Dr. Lin is a true professional. He took the time to sit with me and answered every question I had. He had several tests performed on my eyes and was diagnosed with cataracts signs of beginning Glaucoma and beginning Macular degeneration. Ever since my Lasik surgery a few years ago, I've had a few eye floaters that I hardly noticed over time. They seemed to progress recently, and I started looking for an Ophthalmologist right away. I found this business on Yelp and thought I'd give it a shot since it was close by. I'm SO HAPPY I did. The receptionist, Erick, was helpful from the very start. He fit me in the day after my phone call and even worked with me on my appt time. He was very friendly and informative, as was Dr. Ngai. My wife was referred to Dr. Ngai, SGV Eye Group. by her primary care doctor. Following numerous tests which disclosed a number of problems, it was decided that corrective surgery with lens implants was the optimal solution. I took my mom to see Dr. Ngai because she was having eye issues and inflammation. We found Dr. Ngai through yelp and decided to visit him because he had available appointments during this hectic time and his staff were extremely courteous and helpful! We've had not so great experiences with my mom's doctor and other doctor offices we called so we appreciated how informative and respectful everyone was at this office. Dr. Ngai and his staff took their time to ask questions, understand my mom's situation and examine her. Although we could not cure her eye problems at the moment, Dr. Ngai and his staff provided us with referrals and helpful suggestions to guide our next steps. We appreciated their time in also helping us call specialists to see if any of them are taking appointments (many are not due to covid-19). I cannot thank Dr. Ngai and his staff enough for their service. They are amazing. My 3 yr old son had a piece of something stuck in his eye and it was causing him pain and swelling. I desperately started searching for anyway to avoid taking him to Kaiser hospital with the Covid virus going on and I was lucky enough to stumble on Dr. Ngai's information after calling/search around. Dr. Ngai is nothing short of a miracle worker. He is extremely professional, friendly, and punctual. We brought in my grandmother who is considered "legally blind" to his office on the chance he could work on her cataracts. Dr. Philip Ngai is passionate about what he does and always has the best interest of his patients in mind. During my consultation appointment, he clearly and patiently explained the options I had for lenses for cataract surgery. My mom recently went to another eye doctor to diagnose what we thought were cataracts. I usually go with her since she doesn't know English super well, but this time she went to a Korean one and felt comfortable. She came back and the doctor was pushing some laser assisted surgery that would put my mom out more than $2,000 out of pocket. My husband thought it was fishy since it was a hard sell and it wasn't covered by insurance, so we found Dr. Ngai here to get a second opinion. Not only did he inform us that the laser assisted surgery wouldn't produce any better results for my mom's case, but listed us better ways to use that money to help my mom's eyesight. My first consultation with Dr. Ngai was in August, 2020. I had a sudden onset of big floaters on my right eye with some flashes of lights. I was instructed by my primary physician to call his office even if it was after hours. It was 5 pm and his office was already closed. I left a message, and his assistant Eric returned my call right away. He gave me an appointment to see Dr. Ngai the following day. After a few minutes, Dr. Ngai called me to see if he needs to see me that night. I saw him at 7 am the following morning. He examined me thoroughly and was reassured that it was not a detached retina. During my eye evaluation, he noted that the cataract on my left eye is ripe and it was causing my poor vision. I have been looking for a good ophthalmologist for the past few years because I knew my left eye vision was getting worst. I stopped wearing contact lenses and was using glasses because the contact lens was causing discomfort and blurred vision at night. Five years ago, I was referred to another ophthalmologist in a neighboring city of West Covina. It took forever to get an appointment, and I experienced a long wait and was in an assembly line type of waiting to go from one room to another. Before I went to the examination room, I had to watch a video about the different lens that will be added cost! So, this ophthalmologist saw me in less than 10 minutes and told me to go to the next room to be scheduled for cataract surgery and how much it would cost. I was so disappointed with her that I decided to seek for a second opinion. I went to a well-known Eye Institute in LA. Their ophthalmologist had me undergo a battery of tests, and then asked me if I was informed by the previous ophthalmologist that I have an eye condition that surgery can cause damages to my eyes. This ophthalmologist advised me to hold off the cataract surgery until its really necessary. Fast Forward this September 2020, I had a follow up appointment with Dr. Ngai, and after another thorough examination I told him that I was really suffering from my poor vision. We discussed the option of having the cataract removed but told him I was afraid of the previous diagnosis that surgery can hurt my eyes. Dr. Ngai explained the procedure and what his treatment plan will be based on my condition, he reassured me that he has other patients with this type of condition. I decided that I will have him do my surgery, that I have confidence in him and he knows conditions of my eyes and what technique he will use. Early December, I had left cataract surgery with lens implant. My friends told me that they had 20/20 vision day after surgery. When I saw him day after the surgery, my vision was blurry and still had swelling. He told me it will improve in a few days and to call him if it has not improved. My vision cleared up to 20/20 day after I saw him. He called me that night and checked on me. Dr. Ngai is a very caring and gentle doctor, he has excellent communication skill. His clinic staff are also very attentive and caring too. Dr. Ngai spends time and use his state-of-the-art tools to explain and point on the screen one's eye condition compared to a normal one. He patiently answers questions to allay fear about the upcoming procedure. He called me the night before the surgery and was very reassuring. This really allayed my fear. I could have not asked for more. I appreciate his attention on my case. I highly recommend Dr. Ngai that aside from being caring and knowing his patient well, he is an excellent opthalmologist. read more

I would give ZERO stars but Yelp won't let me!!! I saw Dr. Chen back in January 30, 2017 for an eye exam... my mother had used him before and highly recommended him. It was easy to get an appointment and it only cost $50.00 for a basic eye exam. I called Dr. Chen's office and informed them that I need an eye exam for work and my appointment was made right away. I saw Dr. Chen and he examined my eyes and told me I wasn't medically able to perform the tasks at work and he wrote me a medical release. I provided that letter to my employer who advised me that Dr. Chen needs to provide a more detailed explanation as to why I am unable to perform the tasks at work. Dr. Chen was contacted by my employer and he wrote a more detailed explanation, but this time he wrote that with the correct glasses (multifocal) I wouldn't have an issue performing the tasks at work. Problem #1 - I use "bifocal" glasses which are "multifocal" glasses and I still had issues at work and that was the reason I saw Dr. Chen in the first place. During my eye exam, Dr. Chen told me "bifocal" glasses wouldn't help me at work!!! So, what are the "multifocal" glasses Dr. Chen thinks I should have?!?! Since receiving Dr. Chen's more detailed explanation, work decided to accommodate me and didn't ask me to perform duties involving computers for an entire shift and I wasn't asked to do so for almost two (2) years. However, work is not stating that I have to perform those duties with the computer and if I don't want to, I need another eye exam! So, I called Dr. Chen's office again for another eye exam. Problem #2 - Dr. Chen told his staff today, November 27, 2018, to not schedule me for anymore eye exams! Dr. Chen stated that giving me an eye exam and having to write medical releases isn't worth the $50.00 fee!!! Dr. Chen has ZERO integrity as an Ophthalmologist!!! He will post a low fee to attract clients, but he refuses to support his clients when they need his assistance outside of his office!!! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!! DO NOT USE Dr. Chen!!! Dr. Chen has no integrity and you can not rely on Dr. Chen!!! Use another ophthalmologist!!! read more
