Dr. Stephey is amazing! I have never had an Optimotrist who had so much passion for his career. He not only answered took the time to actually find out what was actually going on with my impaired vision but also carried out several visual perception tests to make sure he had it right. Ok, right off the bat I'm going to acknowledge that this review is going to sound too good to be true. But it is true. And too good. So very good. I have seen Dr. Stephey for eight years. And while I refer everyone to him no matter where they live, it just recently occurred to me to write a review on Yelp so that more people might be lucky enough to stumble into his office. Dr. Stephey always amazes me. Always. But my most recent visit was beyond belief. I had been suffering from incredibly intense headaches. Like some maniac had slipped a letter opener inside my skull behind my eye and was pressing on my optic nerve with masochistic glee. When the headaches came (which was almost daily and for hours at a time) I was debilitated. I'd have to find myself a very dark place to lie down and close my eyes. Not from sleepiness but from the intense pain and light sensitivity. Oh the light sensitivity! I was like a drug addict who had to walk around in dark glasses all the time, even in relatively dark indoor spaces. You can imagine how this might affect one's ability to manage time wisely. Needless to say I had degenerated into a barely functioning adult. It just happened that I was having one of these horrible episodes recently while in Dr. Stephey's office and he immediately told me he had a strong hunch it was being caused by my prescription. I hobbled over to the chair in his exam room. He cut the lights (except for one) so I could sit in the dark for a moment without any lenses on and let my headache calm a bit. Then he pulled out that old Optometrist's trick where they put a lens over your eye and say "Is this better or worse?" I couldn't tell but Dr. Stephey pointed out that I wasn't covering my eyes with my hand to block the small light overhead. And then he put another lens over my eyes and said, "What about this?". And this is all true: the ice pick was instantly wedged under my skull and on my optic nerve again. Instantly. He triggered the headache... by putting the lens I had been wearing back over my eyes. Crazy! Crazy! Crazy! I know. My family can back me up on this. I had that appointment a month ago and walked away with a different prescription. Guess what? I have not had that headache since that appointment. Seriously! If you or your child can't see well, have headaches, suffer from motion sickness, have a hard time reading, writing, or computing math, if you walk around feeling like your pupils were just dilated and you forgot to bring along those shades that make it bearable, if you have issues with your driving, if you have an impaired ability to concentrate and focus, if busy print patterns swim and wiggle and make you sick, if you have a hard time walking without looking down, if you are clumsy and regularly bump into walls or knock into furniture, you just might want to pop in on Dr, Stephey and let him drop some vision-related knowledge on you. Which he will do. So be prepared for him to tell you about all kinds of things that might be making matters worse than they have to be. Dr. Stephey doesn't just think of you as a pair of eyes, but as a system that can easily be thrown off by inadequate nutrition and diet or that might not have established all its components properly during development or hundreds of other factors. Dr. Stephey will give you articles to read or book titles to consider or information to pursue. Because he is always reading, always learning, always asking questions, always trying to find more pieces to the puzzle. He truly wants to help people get the most out of themselves. I wish I could clone this man and make not only more optometrists like him but more orthodontists and dentists and pulmonologists and ENTs and geriatricians and neurologists, etc, etc, etc. If you have a child who is struggling in school or underperforming, I highly recommend your child visit with Dr. Stephey. Even if you've done a vision exam and your child didn't need glasses. THAT DOESN'T RULE OUT A VISION PROBLEM. Make the appointment, I'll let Dr. Stephey explain the rest. Also, I have to be sure I show love to the office staff. I love the ladies who run the office! They are always lovely and kind and patient. And they treat me like they are genuinely happy to see me again. Now, to the people of the Internet who have looked for an optometrist over the last eight years and were disappointed with the results, I am partly to blame for that. I am very sorry. I offer you my greatest apology that I didn't write this sooner and get you pointed in the direction of Dr. Stephey's office all those years ago. Better late than never. Dr. Stephey is more than just an optometrist. He is a wealth of knowledge about all things related to vision, and how that affects so many other things in our body and our well-being. He is also very willing to impart his knowledge and resources on anyone willing to listen and learn. I took my son to Dr. Stephey after he was identified as gifted, but with an unknown vision issue. Dr. Stephey was able to quickly diagnose the problem, get him started on therapy, and he has worked closely with us since then. However, he doesn't just stop with considering a patient's vision. In casual conversation, I happened to mention that my son was experiencing some food allergy anxiety due to his severe nut allergy and a scare about a year ago. This fear was making it impossible for us to purchase anything from the store that my son had not already previously eaten (food and brand). My son would also would refuse anything not cooked by me (due to fear of contamination) and we could not get him to eat out at a restaurant where he had not recently eaten. Shortly after hearing my concerns, Dr. Stephey contacted me to tell me that he was taking a class on cognomovement. He sent me a video to watch which explained it, and asked if we would be willing to have our son try it to see if it would help with his food allergy anxiety. He did this for us on his day off and just to see if he could help our son. Although we all did not think that the therapy had any affect initially, to our shock, my son started trying foods and brands that he had never eaten before. He even successfully ate at a restaurant that he had not been to in several years on a recent vacation. This was a very welcome change after a year of fear and refusals. The difference in my son's behavior towards food, and his fear and anxiety level, can only be attributed to whatever happened during the cognomovement therayp, all due to Dr. Stephey's patience, care and concern for his patients, his continued learning and his refusal to give up until he has helped his patients as much as he possibly can. He is an invaluable resource to anyone with any sort of neurodiversity or with any sort of learning difference both related and unrelated to vision. I would recommend him to anyone, and I am proud to say that I am also a patient along with my son. I selfishly hope that he never retires. read more

Several people in my family have been going to Dr. Stephey for years, and we've always been very happy with our choice. He's friendly and fun, great at putting patients at ease, and genuinely interested in his patients. The receptionists and assistants have always been nice and helpful, and they'll patiently wait while you try on 30 different pairs of frames! The selection of frames isn't huge, but it's always good. Overall, highly recommended as a nice, small practice with great people. read more

Dr Stephey has really helped put my overall functioning onto a more positive trajectory. He fitted me with prism glasses that helped my ear (yes, ear) sensitivity decrease, which no ENT has ever been able to help with. I took my two children to see Dr. Stephey for evaluation and treatment of visual processing issues. He comes across as enthusiastic, knowledgeable and sincere, but don't be fooled. On my first call to his office he asked me for my e-mail address so he could "send me information". Thus, he established an unsolicited e-mail relationship that appeared casual and based out of genuine interest and concern and often included unprompted correspondence. Later, when I question him about the cost of something, he informed it was a "global fee" that included "any e-mails or phone calls" He charged me a $1000 (discounted from $2400) for two computer programs, that I later found out should not have been more than $500. He downloaded the programs on to my lap top, but when I asked for another license he told me the cost would once again be a discounted $1000 even though I already own the programs. It was when I questioned this that he informed me "$1000.00 was a global fee which included a new user name and password for HTS, the anticipation of needing to add sessions to the PATH program, at least 3 progress exams, and any email or phone calls we needed to have." He charged me $1800 for an IM program and equipment that sells on the IM website for $549 https://imhome.interactivemetronome.com/orders/improduct.aspx . Additionaly, none of these computer programs turned out to be tradional vision therapies. I have found a new OD who uses traditional therapies, and is upfront about his fees. If you are looking for a developmental optometrist, don't waste your money here. read more

Which is fine, if you are looking for an Interactive Metronome Provider. I believe people should be aware when a doctor is using his office as a sales front for a product that will profit him directly. Today was my first visit with Dr Stephey who came highly recommended. I can not say enough about what an incredible experience I had. He was incredibly kind, compassionate,informative, knowledgeable, and in fact gave me life changing information not only about my eye health but my health overall. Dr. Stephey is AMAZING! If you have a child that has a learning disability, this is the doctor you want to see. I have paid more than $45,000. and sold my house to pay for a specialty school for dyslexia for my two children. I wish I had met him sooner. He showed me that both of my children have eye tracking, eye teaming issues which is an eye/brain problem that could be fixed with vision therapy. He directed me in the direction I should go and placed the right people in my path in order to get the school district to pay for the vision therapy. Dr. Stephey is a life saver! I've had weak eye muscles my entire life and was always prescribed reading glasses with more and more prism as I got older. Just within the past couple of years, my reading glasses became useless and I began having daily headaches, back muscle aches, problems concentrating, anxiety, and a whole lot more problems. I saw two different eye doctors who would only prescribe me more prism and advised me to do vision therapy at a visionary school in Pomona or Fullerton. I searched Yelp for an eye doctor that specialized in vision therapy and found the amazing Dr. Stephey and WOW! Instead of weekly therapy visits, he was able to give me vision therapy software that I can do at home and within 2 months my vision has significantly improved. I no longer have all the issues that came with weak eye muscles, reduced the prism, and I don't even need reading glasses anymore. Dr. Stephey is a true optometrist who I can't thank enough. Listen! I feel the need to put this out there. I think there are many children, even adults going through the same problems I went through and my daughter is going through at the moment. Dr. Douglas Stephey diagnosed one of my daughters with an underlined vision reading problem. This is the reason this daughter of mine has struggled and continue to struggle with phonics / reading and reading comprehension. She would complain of headaches, having blurry vision or seeing double, sometimes reading words backwards and also complained of tired sleepy eyes...this is funny, because I too use to give the same/similar complains to my mother when she would push me to read! read! read! while in elementary school. I remember my mother would tell me to stop being lazy. She thought I was just being lazy, didn't want to read etc. Now, I too thought my daughter was also just being lazy, never realizing that there was a vision issue causing all these problems. My family and I are very lucky to have found Dr. Douglas Stephey and started to see him as our vision doctor. Dr. Stephey and his team are very knowledgeable, efficient professionals.
