I've been wanting to try Down Home Diner since I always see it whenever I come to Reading Terminal Market. We came on a Sunday morning, and I thought it would be packed, but surprisingly we were seated immediately. They have a pretty good-sized menu with plenty of options, and the best part that I wasn't expecting was how affordable everything was. For a diner, the prices were really great! For my meal, I got the Amish-style chipped beef. The portion wasn't huge, but it definitely did the job. It came with two biscuits covered in creamy gravy and beef. The flavor was nice and salty, and the gravy had the perfect creamy consistency. I also got the bread pudding, which was delicious. It came out nice and warm and was the perfect sweet ending to the meal. It's supposed to have caramel and sesame, and while I didn't really taste much of the sesame, the amount of caramel was perfect without being too much. Stopped here on a whim for breakfast with my sister. I had actually wanted the banana coconut oatmeal, but they were out so settled on a sausage biscuit with home fries while my sister ordered a fried egg and berry French toast. Our server was pretty nice. We did order orange juice, but didn't actually get them till the end when we realized we were still charged for it, and got the juice to go. The food, was, just ok. They served my food in small red bowls which seemed odd, so I asked for a plate to transfer my food to. The home fries needed much more seasoning, and it came with onions and peppers. I did request mushrooms. The food was not hot. It was bordering lukewarm/cold. I'm not one to send food back, so I just dealt with it. The sausage biscuit was alright. The biscuits were dry and not as flaky as I'd prefer. The sausage was thick, but decent. My sister liked her food, but wasn't impressed. We needed lunch and we were near the Reading Market and knew we'd find something we'd like here. We remembered this place from the past for its excellent bacon so we stopped in. This place is less crazy with its own seating area. The server was friendly and kept things moving. We tried the chocolate egg cream, a first for us. It was very tasty. Sort of a fizzy chocolate milk. I had the crab cake sandwich which was good. My wife got the pimento grilled cheese sandwich which was less than successful. It was a melted mess. Just OK. The place was very crowded and there weren't many tables at the public seating areas, so I decided to give Down Home Dinner a try. The experience was okay overall. The interior is simple, large, and more cafeteria style than a diner. My server was very efficient, but not particularly friendly, but the cheesesteak I had was hearty and delicious. Went here after st paddy's day weekend. The food is pretty solid but had some variance in quality. Some items are great but some are a little weird. Although each visit the same food is consistently the same so if you like an item it will always be good. Trying a restaurant in Reading Terminal Market during the flower show can be a testing experience but not for us. Yes we had to wait for a table but line moved quickly. It took awhile for the waiter to bring a menu and take our order (my son actually had to get up and go to the counter to ask for help), but once placed, the food arrived moments later and we were pleasantly surprised and would resign to come again. This was my first visit to the Down Home Diner and there were a few challenges but overall enjoyed my meal. I'm glad I was able to step out and try something new! I got the Sawmill Platter, I was truly craving biscuits & gravy; the dish itself was great! I did struggle with the amount of gravy for the small size portion of biscuit and really tough to chew sausage! I got the eggs on the side (and I'm glad I did). There were eggshells found in the scrambled eggs, and the staff/management were so kind and prompt with getting it handled. The staff and service were remarkable and it did give a classic feel to a relaxing diner! The jukebox directly near the bar/dining area adds an amazing touch! I came here with one of my friends to have some breakfast as we just landed from our red eye from the west coast and checked into our hotel. The place has lots of tables and a counter. We were both excited about the fresh made biscuits. When????? When were these biscuits fresh made? Last month? Because they were rock hard. The sausage was tough, thank goodness for the overabundance of gravy to actually soften the food. I don't think any other spices besides salt and pepper live in that kitchen. I was so upset I wanted to call the police! But then I saw at least 3 tables of them. I couldn't understand it! How were they enjoying their breakfast there?? My friends bacon was done at different temps, and one slice looked al dente while another slice looked burnt at hell. They only good thing was the fresh made cherry jam. Really enjoyed this spot 2 years ago after the superbowl when we were defeated and sad. So we figured if we could enjoy it in that mood we would love it after a big W. Not so much. Our waiter was great but I ordered an omelette with no tomato's came out with tomato's. He brought back and it took about 20 minutes to get my plate because the place had gotten busy since we sat. The cook needs to known he has to expedite that order. So then when it does come it's still not really an omelet and more scrambled in a a pile. Cook obviously not trained. Then the sausage side that I had wasn't there when it came back. The waiter took offf tab but it still ruined experience. The biscuits with both meals tasted totally raw like you bit a crescent tube roll before cooking it. Horrible!! There was also a rock hard piece of what I'm crossing my fingers was bacon that I almost chopped a tooth on. That plus terrible coffee we will never be back.
