Down in The Valley is such a fun store. They are mostly known for music, record store. They also sell gifts, novelties, random music/pop culture merch. Theres a smoke shop as well. Prices are a bit high imo but they have some really cool stuff. Staff are usually pretty helpful. Parking is pretty easy as I've hardly seen this strip mall packed. read more

This is a hidden gem if you love records. I stopped in this place while walking around the strip mall. There is a huge collection of records and all types of random products. They have comic books, funko pop figures, apparel, and more. The staff was very friendly but the person who was taking inventory kept watching us and gave me the stalker vibes lol. It's ok though. I came right in at opening so no one was in store yet so they said fine I'll check them out, so records were snatched out of my hands and the employee went to the back to inspect them, and 2nd employee said "we're doing you a favor" with attitude in his tone. Then the guy offered me $3 for records that were worth at least 30 a piece, they were barely used, near mint and he lowballed me, so brought my records to Mill City Sound and got offered a great price for my records, go to Mill City Sound in Hopkins not this place! read more

This is one of the only record stores near me, and i loved the first time I went for the Lorde listening party! They have a huge selection of CDs vinyls and various gifts, clothing, funko pops, etc. I also loved the vibe and style of the store. It's so fun how they hold listening parties for new albums. First Time Going to a local record store and man they had a HUGE selection of vinyl. Me and My Friend managed to find records that have been on our Wishlist for quite a while. Reasonable prices Aswell I grabbed 4 albums ( Jesus Is King, ye, LONG.LIVE.A$AP , and The Never Story) and signed up for the VIP service for under $150. My friend grabbed a channel ORANGE vinyl. My other buddy bought a Funko POP. Great experience overall. Parking lot is really confusing but that has nothing to do with the store itself. read more

They also get a good selection n record store day but you better get there early as the lines can get pretty long. There loyalty program is pretty good too. I've been buy Vinyl Records here for the last 25 years. I really enjoy getting in the front of the line at 2:30 in the morning for Record Store Day every year. I'm such a nerd lol. The workers for the most part are friendly. I do have the occasional issue with returning records because of visible and audio defects. Can be a bit unpleasant dealing with the manager. They do have a wide selection of cds, vinyl, rock t-shirts, and tobacco pipes. Would definitely recommend checking this legendary place out. read more

This place sucks. Everything is overpriced and the staff knows very little about their products. The attitudes range from standing around looking more stoned than the customers to being pricks over the most trivial things. I came in today just to browse, look around, nothing too serious. We started by the posters, which has been the same rotation of posters for over a year. After isle shopping my friend and I stand in front of the glass section, unaware of the "Must be 21 to shop" sign. Whoever was behind the counter practically sprints up and asks to check our ID's, I said I had mine but I'm currently 20. He then tells us that we aren't allowed to shop because we aren't 21 which is totally fair, however, I stand for a brief moment longer to take one last look and he says to me "I'm going to have to ask you to avert your eyes." I validated that he told me I could not look at the glass, and then he said "This section is for adults only, it's not for kids." This is where I loose it in my mind, he spoke down to me as if I'm a child, or a minor of some sort. The commentary and tone of voice triggered an instant panic in me because I was shocked that I was referred to as a "child". I never said anything, I kept my head down the rest of the time I was in the store, meanwhile he's now making sure my friend and I are not looking from across the store. I understand that it may be a company policy that you and your staff are required to follow, but I'm assuming that isn't the way they intend for their employees to tell someone (months) under the age of 21 not to look at glass. I also found it ironic that he loudly told another employee "You can sell pieces when you're 18, but no one under 21 can look." My friend and I looked at each other completely baffled. The looks I was given from this specific worker over the course of maybe 20 minutes made me so uncomfortable I decided to leave. I will not give my business to people who could care less of my presence as a customer, as well as my feelings as a person. If you're having an awful day, there's a 99% chance whoever is working will match your energy perfect! Along with the loud gossip and judgement of past customers, I think I'll pass. Came here for the first time the other day to look for some new records for my birthday and came out spending way more money than intended and a new favorite stop!! They had SO many record I have been on the hunt for, and lots of used ones that aren't completely obscure which is super nice for when you want to save a few bucks. I enjoy this store, which is kind of a hybrid vinyl shop, head shop and Spencer's gifts. I find it to be fun to browse the music and the ultimate place to find a gag gift or white elephant type gift. There's tons of random fun stuff to find and look at. Staff tends to be pretty friendly. I would say prices skew a bit on the high side but not crazy. Also, there are often concert tickets available similar to the Electric Fetus, where you can avoid ticket fees and such. Fun store, cool independent shop. Since it's in a strip center, access and parking are easy. read more

Pretty cool shop back in the day the original location was right across from the Golden Valley Police and City Hall, it used to sit off Winnetka in it's own building and next to M&I Auto Supply. The city for years wanted to move it as the head shop was in close proximity to them and that didn't sit well. They finally took over the land and moved the Post office where M&I used to be, torn down the strip mall behind both and redeveloped it to a newer mall and put a restaurant there. You used to walk into Down and the Valley and they had cases of pipes and bongs to the left near the back and the cassettes were in front and records were to the right, they built a locked case of CDs on the wall I remember in the late 80s as used to frequent the store for my music needs. It used to have a very late 60s hippie feel and was advertised on KQRS for years. I never could get into the relocation to the Golden Valley Shopping Center as it was the end of an era. read more

Down in the Valley is not only a great name for its location but a very creative store. I used to live by the Electric Fetus and this gives me warm fuzzys. If your looking for a out of the box present for a younger person, then you have come to the right place. I stopped in to get a Christmas present for my wife's brother and jack pot I found a trucker mesh hat that he liked more than the others items he got. What a fun place to look around. If you like the smell of incense, this place will make you happy.... Immediately upon entering the doors of Down in the Valley...you will be greeted with the welcoming smell of patchouli and sandalwood. Most times, you are also greeted by a semi-happy-counter-person. You will be watched like a hawk while in the store by said semi-happy-counter-person. This is the only thing I don't like about this store. I feel all paranoid and uncomfortable - like they are seriously expecting me to steal their random strange little doo-dad's. Settle down semi-happy-counter-person...I have never stolen anything in my life & I'm not about to start by stealing one of your $5 kitschy Jesus magnets! Aside from the watchful eye...this place is great. You can buy incense, a Big Lebowski action figure, a skull figurine, rock posters, vinyl records/CD's/DVD's, "tobacco" pipes & accessories, First Avenue Concert tickets (cash only), t-shirts, and a whole ton of other random stuff... This store basically has anything you could need as a music fan. A deep and diverse selection of vinyl, a hearty 45's shelves, many, many RSD exclusives, the best cassette selection in the Twin Cities, and CD's of all kinds for days. My review is solely from the vinyl aspect of this store... This place is hidden in a slightly out-of-date strip mall off of Hwy.55, but it is worth a visit to check the vinyl for sale, and become one with the incense-infused air. I have visited this store more times than I can remember, and have found some hard-to-find LPs here such as The Cure Mixed-Up album, some Cocteau Twins Japanese vinyl, among others. I even paid a visit here on Record Store Day and found it to not be overrun like the Fetus was that day. The new vinyl for sale will not blow you away, but they have been making a good effort to stock most current albums, all-time hits, and some local vinyl. I'd put them in the middle of the pack for used and new vinyl...well behind Shuga in NE, the Fetus, Roadrunner, and Treehouse near Uptown. Still, the chance of finding a rare item that someone sold here is incentive enough to make periodic visits. The staff are friendly, and knowledgeable...if sometimes slow, and I have never had a bad experience here. read more

I placed an order for a record on their Discogs storefront on October 1st, 2021 and when the record didn't show up three weeks later on October 20th, 2021 I filed a missing mail search with the USPS. Wasn't the first time the USPS has deliberately fooled with my packages, wasn't the last. I closed my Discogs account on October 17th, 2021 and on October 22nd I requested via email a refund. When they didn't respond I opened a Paypal case a couple of days later. They then refused to refund and claimed I should be patient and wait for the search to conclude. I then quickly escalated it to a claim because of their refusal to settle. Seven days later the claim was found in my favor and I was refunded. Fast forward to December 22nd, 2021 their sales department emailed me that they had received the package and that it was covered in green paint. They also appeared to have criticized me for filing the Paypal case and not waiting longer for the mail search to conclude, mind you by that time I had moved forward and totally forgotten about the ordeal, it was Christmas. I guess they didn't like me getting my money back and it appears they thought I should not have filed the Paypal claim, I should not have gotten refunded and that I should have waited until December 22nd for valley to try it once more and ship the same package back for a second go round with the same USPS that painted it green the first time. If anybody else has a better interpretation of their email that I've included as a photo in this review please message me, I am all ears. Down in the Valley is an interesting place in Golden Valley. On the plus side, it has several features; it's both a "young person's gift store" - it's similar to, for instance, Spencer's Gifts, or the store Pipefitter's in Madison,WI - and also a CD and record shop. So, it has a very cool atmosphere, and there is plenty to purchase or browse for. The main drawback is that the prices aren't great. While there are used CDs available at a good price, the selection isn't great for them (conversely, the selection for new CDs is good.) I did not check what the prices for vinyl albums are; it's quite possible that they may be better. read more

When I first moved to Minnesota, I was in desperately feining for vinyl shopping. I hadn't been to a record store in a few months and the monster inside of me was about to come out. At the time, I lived in Minnetonka and it looked like Down in the Valley was the nearest place. I checked it out. When you first walk in, it's cleaner than the normal scummy record store. That was a plus. Then I started digging through the records and before I got to the "B" letter section, I had a handful of items I wanted. I've been to this place multiple times over the last year and a half and I love it every time. I have to set myself a budget before going in. I've always been able to find so many records. Today I went into Electric Fetus for the first time and it just wasn't the same. Yes it's larger but Down In The Valley has a collection that was made for me. Ah. I wish I would have went here instead, today. I can't speak for their other stuff, such as CDs, DVDs etc. I'm always in just for records. read more

Down in the Valley is a small record store chain that's been around for years. The original shop is this one in Golden Valley -- in a 1960s-style strip mall -- and it's probably the best in the chain. I have only been to this shop a few times; the stock of CDs and vinyl (new and used) is OK and fairly large. Other music-related items are for sale as well. It looks like as of this writing, the store has two more branches in the Minneapolis suburbs of Maple Grove and Crystal. It's good to see places like this keeping their doors open. Definitely worth checking out if you're a CD and/or vinyl fan. read more

Down in the Valley is your garden variety local record store that used to exist everywhere before Best Buy and Wal-Mart killed them off, or almost killed all of them. I make a weekly trip to the Golden Valley location to buy used vinyl. Their selection isn't that great, but their vinyl is always high quality and very inexpensive. The staff is interesting. They are the same types of youngsters who worked at the record stores when I was a kid. They actually care about music and listen to lots of different types. The punk rocker is friendly and wants to help find exactly what you are looking for. The chick with the blue mohawk asks questions about 80's music and really cares about my opinion. They also sell tickets to First Avenue events with no extra customer service charges. Buying tickets here is much easier and cheaper than using Ticketmaster or heading into the city to buy directly from First Ave. I dig it. read more

Down in the Valley is a wonderful old fashioned "record" shop with 1960's type gifts memorabilia, fun useful and well priced. Their selection of second hand CD's, records and videos is excellent. We have shopped here for 14 years and have always been able to find fun happy and unusual gifts as well as wonderful music. The entire staff have always been positive friendly sincere and helpful on all levels. They also carry new music and I have been able to order hard to find CD's. They offer a frequent shopper discount program as well. read more

So, head shops...are head shops but the people who work in them, make all the difference in the world. I've been frequenting head shops for 30+ years and the man who appeared to be in charge the day in June that I visited the Golden Valley store was uninviting, unhelpful and extremely rude. I spent $90.00 but he still acted as if i were going to steal from him. Sad and uber offensive. I pride myself on the fact that I've never stolen from anyone. If you're looking for warm, inviting, Minnesota-friendly, this is NOT the place. I won't be spending time or money at this Down In The Valley store or any of their other locations. There are so many online head shops who have wonderful deals, are inviting, will go the extra mile for you, and will welcome you spending your money with them. Local isn't always best. back in the day (early 80's), my brother and i would take our allowances and get on our huffys and head to the corner of winetka and 55. amazingly, despite 8 caribou coffees within ten feet of each other and maybe three borders book stores, the old golden valley shopping center is stilllll standing with its 70s structure intact. the same pizza place, the same drug store where we would get our fun dip and big chew and the same independent music store, bringing the cool to golden valley. down in the valley. it was dark and mysterious. it had pipes and bongs, before we knew what those were, reptiles and snakes, before we were old enough to fear them, and the coolest yet creepiest employees. my brother would get the latest metallica, judas priest or ratt. i felt cool going in there with him. i havent been since the 80s. dont know if theyre the cheapest or have the best selection but recalling ones youth and having something still standing from it makes me feel just that much younger. some memories you just dont fuck with- but i encourage you all to go read more
