My local half price books! They always have a great selection of Manga and comics to look through at good prices. Sometimes I'm able to find some older and unique manga I have never heard of. Along with their obvious massive selection of books they have a decent amount of video games, action figures, and other collectibles. While I feel there figures and collectibles are overpriced at times every now and then you can get a good deal. Overall this is a great place to shop and the employees are always nice! read more

DO NOT SELL YOUR BOOKS HERE! I decided it was time to downsize my Artist Book collection so I put together 2 boxes of books to sell. Prior to bringing them in I decided to look them each book up individually online and find the cheapest available copies (regardless of condition). After looking them all up, the total was just a hair over $600. I didn't want to deal with listing them all individually and was more than happy to take a hefty cut for the convenience of just being able to drop them off and walk away. I thought, i would love 25% of the value but would reluctantly accept 20%, so $120. I dropped off the books, waited around for an hour and fifteen minutes. When my offer was ready I walked up to the counter and they said "We can do $28". I politely asked for them to be put back into the 2 boxes and left. Not only will I not attempt to sell to them again, I will not buy anything from them again. It is shameful that they are offering people less then 5% of their items value and then turning around and selling them for full price. I have been going to this store for over 20 years, I will no longer support their buisness. read more

I stopped here looking for a particular book & to kind of just browse. I did find the book I wanted but the price was bit more than what I wanted to pay, especially for a used book. I did find it cheaper online and ended up getting it elsewhere. I like that they sell a variety of other items as well. I like seeing what games, video games and sometimes movies they have. They are well stocked up w/ items but the store can feel a bit cramped when busy as the aisles are a bit narrow. I will say the staff weren't very friendly. When checking out the cashier rang me up without saying a word to me- which is weird. I feel like if that's the case just have self checkout. The parking lot is a bit hectic but usually no issues finding a spot. read more

I stopped in on a Saturday morning looking for some time to kill. I've been in the market for new board books for a nursery. The store has a lot to offer, but the children's section needs some work. I couldn't quite grasp the organization method. I also found a lot of books that were in the wrong section Which made it hard to know if I was the problem or if there just wasn't a rhyme or reason to the organization. Prices seemed a little higher than other Half Price Books. A couple of the items that we were interested in were pre-condition to say the least... Yet they still wanted 7 to 8 dollars. I did end up, leaving without purchasing anything this time, but I'm not opposed to coming back and checking out the other sections of the store. It seems like they have a really good system for buying books and there were a lot of other patrons taking advantage of this. If you have some time to kill and you're looking to browse some books, definitely stop in. Just make sure you know that you'll be there for a bit because it's not super well organized. read more

It's been a while since my last review. Spoiler alert: Instill love Half Price Books. This location, in Miracle Mile, is super convenient. There is always parking in the shared lot, and the music they play is always good, too. The staff is so darned nice and helpful, just the way you would imagine book lovers who work in a bookstore would be. They're happy to help you find what you are looking for, make recommendations, and even order something from another location if needs be. Total win. In addition to books, this location has a pretty great selection of tabletop games, plenty of journals, and even fun toys for grown-ups and kids. I always love going here to look for books. They're right next to a bunch of other cute shops right off of Excelsior Blvd. Due to COVID, they require masks (yay) and have plastic shields at the cash registers. Like most HPB stores, the place is packed. Didn't find any records I was interested in grabbing but otherwise they lay everything out nicely and have a lot of staff willing to help. They are only allowing one person in each little cubby of book sections but that's USUALLY not a problem. Just be patient if you can. read more

It's a fine store, you'll find some worthwhile purchases here. My only real objection is selling books here. I worked in used book stores as a buyer for eight years in the San Francisco Bay Area, so I know what I have when I'm selling. The buyers here take ages to evaluate books and underpay for rare and unusual titles. I was offered $10 for a rare title that goes for $150-400 online. On another occasion I received $41 for approximately $400 worth of titles. Expect about 10% of the value of your books even if they are hard to find and expect to see your sold books selling at vastly higher prices. I understand the economics of the used book trade, but selling here can be very disappointing. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. We took about 20 books and 5 DVD's to sell. While we were waiting perused the store. IMO it's a chaotic mess. As an example, I cook, and have many quality cookbooks. In this category were really awful. The same with history. So, we had two special Japanese books (which I told them) that were worth $200, as we googled. We didn't expect this price - but maybe $25 a piece. However they offered $5 for each. These people are shylocks. Naturally we didn't accept this. The bottom line we received $15 for about 20 books and 5 current DVD,s. If you are thinking of selling books - just throw them away - and don't perpetuate this store. read more

I went to the St. Louis Park HPB with a huge box of DVD sets; Law & Order, The Office, Game of Thrones, etc. I walked out with $65 cash in my pocket, a little underwhelming but they do have to make money. In the 45 minutes while I waited I got to wander around and look at what they had. This is definitely the place to go for any book, game, puzzle, or DVD needs. They have a large kid section that sucked me in although I managed to resist. My grandkids have too many toys and books as it is. Because I am learning Spanish, I picked up a Common Phrases book that I'm enjoying. $5. The best part, for me, is they will accept everything you bring in. No toting stuff back home. If they can't sell it they have a wide network of charities to donate them to, do it really is a win-win. read more

Ya gotta check out their Super Buy section in the front of the store! I found books for $2-$3 that were originally $14. These were New York Times Bestsellers too. They change the deals upfront almost each day when I asked them. The employees were approachable and helped me find one of the books I was looking for. The only bummer was that they only offered me $1 for my 4 fiction books that I brought in to sell which were in very good condition. They said it's because they have many copies of them. These stores resurrected from the ebooks onslaught of humanity. I never knew they could be so packed and fun to hang out especially on a rainy day. I didn't even know there are places that would actually pay you or used books anymore. The selections here are incredible, from bold to vinyl to DVDs. As I browse through the young teens section, it brought back a deluge of emotions for me reminiscing over my childhood favorite reads like Nancy Drew and the Town Mouse and Country Mouse, maybe the occasional Enid Blyton finds and etc. if you venture to the adult section, you can find many acclaimed author books in rotation. It feels so right to see people shopping for books, even a mother hanging out with a couple of her kids on the floor and reading to them. Occasionally, you hear kids squealing with excitement over some books they just flipped through. Overall, a positive family and community environment. read more

So I had just seen the latest Jack Reacher movie with Tom Cruise and really enjoyed it, so I was on my quest to find some cheap novels for an upcoming trip. My wife bought some gift cards for Christmas for our nephew, so we had 2 $5 vouchers. Score! I asked the clerk and he was super nice and showed me back to the Lee Child section. There was one paperback and one hardback. SNATCH! I think $12 for the 2. SCORE! He made a comment, "They are kind of popular now." Not the best joke in the world, but I appreciated the effort. Everyone was super helpful. The place was full of books and lots of good stuff for great prices. I have a buddy that goes here often and loves it. I haven't tried coming in here to sell something, so I would be interested in what they offer to you when they trade in books. I am guessing they give you a lot more in credit if you want that instead of cash. Overall, a cool store, in a full strip mall, in the heart of the suburbs. I like this place! read more

I've sold books here twice. The first time I brought 5 boxes and they gave me $80. The second time I inadvertently came in during a 50% off sale with 8 boxes and they only gave me $30. I don't understand how all this works. I tried to complain and they showed me all these books they were giving me no money for and told me I could keep them if I wanted. You have to stay in the store while they look at your books. It takes about 45 minutes, but they told me about 1/2 hour the first time I was there. They offered me my boxes back the first time, but not the second time. I wish I understood their pricing better. I have more books I could bring back, but no boxes to bring them in. If they only give me $30 for 8 boxes, is it even worth it? Unfortunately Amazon deleted my seller account since I don't sell often enough. Otherwise I would sell there. Ebay is an option, but they take a pretty big cut and you have to worry about shipping costs. I read that Magers and Quinn is an option, but they're in Uptown so parking isn't ideal. Ugh. Books are expensive to buy, but worthless to sell. On the upside, they had Chinook books for like $17.70 and with 50% off, it was like $8.85. Not quite as good as free on Earth Day, but pretty darn good pre-Earth Day. read more

I love this place! This location at St. Louis Park is a little more cramped than some of the more spacious locations like Maplewood or Blaine, but it's closest to me so I venture here the most. I love that they have new stuff in addition to the used, but it's still at a discounted price! Games, puzzles, calendars, stationary, journals, there is so much more here than just books. One extra perk is they are very dog friendly. I can bring my little shitshu with me while I shop. Thumbs up HPB. read more

For a rich section of town, this one ironically is the grungiest. I counted 2 carts. Everything is just stuffed in and cramped. However you will always find something. As you know I only buy mysteries, and I struck pay dirt with a rare local author, Lori Lake gun series book. The parking is insane. This mini mall is called Miracle Mile or something. Reminds me more of the dentist scene in Marathon Man. This location is always the last one I go to, during the sales. read more

I just love this place, it's a cool spot to get away from the busy hubub and you can loose yourself in the world of books. Although I don't try to buy books all that often due to the fact that I have way too many altogether, it is a fun time to see what they have to offer. If you are looking to get a newer-ish bestselling book they just might have one in stock, for half of the listing price! wowza... It's a hit and miss but I have been known to hit a pot o gold once in awhile. This place might not be great for somebody who is looking for a specific book but perhaps more a genre since the stock is purely based on the public selling the store their books. I have never tried to sell any books here but I assume the buying rate must be so little due to the overhead of the store alone, so don't expect to rake in the dough on a box of grandma's old "treasures." This isn't Antique Roadshow and unless you're bringing in a first edition Gone with the Wind they'll probably throw you a fiver for your box of treasures (crap). Best advice: Sign up to be on their email list (they don't send out junk mail) and about 3 times a year they have a week where they give out awesome coupons culminating with the final day at 50% off one item, thus making it 75% off retail price. This is a great way to buy those expensive DVD sets or awesome coffee table book that you'll never probably read! read more

This is a very well stocked store. Very impressive selection in nearly every section. Forget about the complainers that say "there's stacks of items just sitting in a cart... ". I say "Hey, grab it off the cart if it's cataloged and hasn't been put on a shelf yet!" The simple reason is: they are hoppin' with business!, people are constantly coming in to the store to sell their used items; they have to be cataloged and put on the shelf; people need assistance in finding a rare item, or great deal; and the checkout is always busy with "deal-seeking customers". Most items are truly half-price, and some prices are unbelievably low; a few may not be a deal at all - No biggie on those few. Definitely go, relax and enjoy the huge selection. read more

I've always looked at Half Price Books as a comfortable stand-by option for the times I: - Want to find a book I didn't know I needed. - Have an itch to flip through records - Miss the smell of old comic books and wanted to feel nostalgic by reading a few. - Need to hear someone complain about how their books are certainly worth more than pennies on the dollar as they try to sell them. Seriously, Half Price Books in St. Louis Park is like a thrift store of literary, visual, and audible history. They carry books, records, CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, magazines, audio books, and old comic books. Of the HPB sites I have been to, this one is at the top of my list. Since the store is pretty central to a number of really cool parts of the Cities, I am sure it sees the most diverse grouping of items being brought in to sell. I love vinyl, and this site consistently has the best selection of vinyl of the HBPs I have visited. I enjoy 70s and 80s punk, new wave, and rock and have consistently found albums here. Pricing is on par with most record stores, and the quality of vinyl is one reason I continue to check their stock. They have a bargain bin under the regular priced rack, and you can find some gems that are in fair condition that are certainly still playable. On the right side of the display you can find more "rare" items that are a tad more pricey, but still worth a peek. This location also offers the best selection of vintage comics of all of the HPBs I have been to as well. I collect vintage Marvel Star Wars comics, and have been able to add a few hard-to-find issues to my nearly complete collection over the past few years. Each time I have paid 4 bucks at the most per comic. The DVD selection here is very robust, but I have found the pricing to be a tad high for my tastes. The book selection is amazing here, and you never know what you will find each time you visit. They are very organized, and if you cannot find something, I have found the staff to be very approachable and friendly. If you plan on selling anything at HPB, plan on getting next-to-nothing for your wares, unless you walk in the door with something rare. I have always been skeptical of selling anything at HPB. I think a person could do better selling their items on Ebay, Amazon, utilize a book swap service such as Swaptree online. Overall, this place beats the larger stores for price, selection (you can find most new books here), and approachability of staff. Having records, CDs, comics, and other miscellany certainly keeps me coming back for more. Check out the SLP HPB sometime! read more

I am on their mailing list so I enjoy coupons and love their regular sales (after Christmas for instance.) I also get a 10% (15%?) discount because I'm a teacher. They have boxes of books they will donate to your school event which are surprisingly up-to-date and not just old and sad ones they couldn't sell. This is walkable from my house, so sometimes we come in just to browse, but usually walk out with something we can't live without. read more

My family goes to Half Price Books every month to purchase books. It's one of my favorite family activities. Today, however, I took my mask down for maybe 3 seconds to take a drink of my beverage, and an employee instantly snapped at me to put my mask up. I help up my cup and said "yep, just taking a drink." And he said "if you need to take a sip you can step outside." I wasn't aware HPB was a place where a woman who is 7 months pregnant is now allowed a moments grace to stay hydrated. Way to keep us all safe, Half Priced Books. read more

The St. Louis Park branch of Half Price Books was a go-to bookstore for me when I lived in the Twin Cities. It's neck and neck with the St. Paul (Highland Park) store for the best Half Price in the Twin Cities, and I've visited pretty much all of them (Apple Valley, Coon Rapids, Roseville, etc.). The selection of used books at the St. Louis Park Half Price is large and pretty good, though it varies from visit to visit. The good news is that the stock turns over at a nice rate at this particular shop, so just because you don't find something today doesn't mean that a visit a month from now wouldn't be worth your time. The books that I'm usually looking for are about sports, music, TV and U.S. history, and I have found many out-of-print gems in those sections at this Half Price. I've heard other people say similar things about the genres (fiction, poetry, mystery, etc.) that they like. The great thing about the Half Price stores is that -- unlike at a big-box chain such as Barnes & Noble, which doesn't sell out-of-print books -- you never know what you'll find. The treasure-hunt aspect of shopping at Half Price is fun. I also have enjoyed perusing the vinyl record and CD offerings at this Half Price. While the selection can be hit or miss, I have still found some nice collectibles. There's also a large section of TV shows and movies on DVD and Blu-ray. One minor criticism: If you decide to sell books to Half Price, don't expect to get much money in return unless you have something truly rare or have a ton of items that you're unloading. Overall, though, a big thumbs-up for this Half Price store, which offers book collectors the chance to land some out-of-print titles that can't be found at Barnes & Noble. read more

I'd never been to a half price books before since we don't have them in Michigan, but I'd heard about them from friends and knew I had to go to one while I was in Minnesota! I brought some books I'd been wanting to get rid of and for the amount I brought I only got $12 back (I brought in a medium size box and a decent size bag full) I was bummed about that, but I kind expected it unfortunately. The largest benefit of HPB is that they're selection is constantly changing so its always fun to stop in and see what's new from last time. I find their general pricing to be extremely competitive (hence the name) with the exception of DVDs which I often stick back on the shelf (knowing I can purchase a TV-show box-set or movie cheaper on ebay). One of the worst parts of shopping in HPB is their popularity, as the store cannot comfortably accommodate tons of people and you WILL feel claustrophobic in the store during busy periods. I've always felt their organization and cataloging is ABOVE par. Their employees DO have a chip on the shoulder but if you observe some of the rude people, greedily unrealistic book sellers, and strait up weirdos (buy the book if you want to read it loser !) that shop there you will understand and empathize with them. They started selling a tiny selection of video-games/hardware in a glass cabinet which is super cool. They also have annual coupons/sales which are as equally competitive as their normal prices (50 % off one item already 50 % off.....right on) Easily one of the best book stores in the twin cities. read more

It's bad enough they rip you off on the front end by giving you pennies on the dollar. You know that going in. You won't get a fair price but it's faster and easier than selling it separately on eBay. Fair enough. But what adds insult to injury is they steal from you also. I brought four bags of merchandise to sell. They put two of the bags in the third one. They kept the fourth one. It was a souvenir bag from the US Bank Stadium and quite beautiful. When I went back to get it they gave me a stupid lie about throwing it away. They knew enough to put two of the bags in the third. Why didn't they do the same for the really good bag? If you must do business with these crooks be sure to count your bags. read more

For a used bookstore the quality of what they sell at Half Price is really top notch. All of their employees are extremely knowledgeable on current book and music trends so they only stock items they think people will enjoy. They are also very particular on quality. All of the books I've purchased at Half Price look almost new and I bought them at half of retail value or less -- a great deal. They also run special sales throughout the year where you can get an additional percentage off with a coupon. If you are looking for a specific item, I would call ahead and ask if it is in stock. As this is a USED bookstore, their selection can vary -- but I've always found employees are very helpful and able to refer me to other Half Price stores nearby if they don't have what I am looking for. read more

This store has one of the best selections of items ever. I am certainly biased because I grew up going to HPB in Texas and books are my spirit objects. Besides dieting books which I loathe almost as much as they loathe themselves. My current mountain of glory contains the following for half off or more! Hard to find Criterion Collection DVD's, especially of the foreign variety. A first edition copy of "How the Garcia Girls Lost There Accents" from the nostalgia section and the iconic, albeit grumpy, "Steal This Book" by Abbie Hofmann. A gnome mug complete with a red gnome hat cover. Oodles of incredible books for my baby and the satisfaction of selling or donating my books for better environmental practices then literally any other bookstore chain I know of... Fun fact? The website has a marketplace similar to Amazon and it's a lovely alternative. Go. All the time. Read paper or ye shall perish in blue light rays. read more

I think this is my fav half books that are in the metro. There is a great selection of books, audio, etc and always a clean store. Every time I call the store to help find a book they are always helpful and never seem like I am putting them out to help me find what I am looking for. When looking at their dvd/television sets, I would compare them to other normal stores that are brand new. Sometimes they are so similar in price you are better off getting it new. A little downfall is that the selection depends on the buy back of books from other people, but they have a great selection and in the back right hand corner of the store there is a great clearance selection - which allows you to find an extra book you weren't planning on! read more

Just wish this place would give a fair price on a gently used book. Have been offered as little as .50 or a quarter and even nothing on best sellers that were soft cover. Yet they'll turn around and sell it for $9. I actually feel better donating my used books to the library. Even though I'm giving them away, at least I don't walk away feeling completely screwed over. read more
