Visited today with my family and it was wonderful. We know the owner personally and she's such a delight. She makes the experience even better. Her knowledge is incredible, you learn so much about what your tasting and buying. The store is so cute and artsy, the Alice in Wonderland theme fits perfectly and makes the experience even more exciting. I'd recommend visiting whether you're a wine drinker or not! read more

Look carefully for this place, because you might miss it. When I say it's small, I mean tiny. All in all, I think the place is about 4' wide in total. See the photos. It's a long closet, basically. Anyway, in this case size doesn't matter. Plenty of wines to choose from and to sample - and not the ordinary wines you'll see in the run of the mill liquor stores. These obscure wines are hand picked and also personally rated by the shop owner. So this isn't a case of someone buying popular wines in bulk and selling them. There was a wine called, "Squid's Fist" that featured a colorful label of a giant squid attacking an old ship. No idea what it tastes like, but the label was pretty cool in my book. When I said, "Oh..the Kraken", the shop owner replied, "Nice 'Clash of the Titans' reference", which scored big points with me. A pretty girl that knows about cheesy movies? Can't beat that. I don't know much about wines, just that they basically are red or white. But chat it up with the owner and you'll learn plenty and since there's free tasting, you can decide for yourself what you like. Good stuff. read more

Always such a wonderful experience at Down the Rabbit Hole, greeted with smiling faces and a wide array of wines to choose from! The store is always kept clean and organized making it a piece of cake to find what you are looking for. But fear not if you don't know what you want there is always someone around to help! The boutique also supports local environmental restoration companies which is just an added bonus! I went in the other day and was recommended to try The Oyster, a Sauv Blanc that helps restore NY's oyster reefs, and it was delicious! It is my new fav summer drink! read more

Sometimes you come across a place that's so unique and so inspired that it stays with you forever. Down the Rabbit Hole Wine Boutique is by far and away the best wineshop I've ever been to. Spend 30 seconds here and you'll see what I mean. The selection here is not vast by any means but each wine has been tenderly and thoughtfully hand picked by the owner. Each time i've stepped in side i've had no idea what I wanted and left with three or four bottles of highly recommended and totally unique wines that i've never seen anywhere els. Oh and just for that little extra something every single wine i've bought has completely blown me away. The shop it self is extremely small perhaps three feet wide by around 10 feet long. mirrors along one wall leave the space feeling bigger but get four people in here and it get's pretty cramped. Personally I feel all this does nothing but give it more character. This shop is an exercise in less is more, A LOT MORE! Each wine has a story and the owner knows them all. She's gone to all the wineries, met all the owners and tasted all the wines. Going to Down the Rabbit Hole isn't just a trip to buy wine. It's an event that leaves you hungry (or perhaps thirsty) for your next trip here. I live in Manhattan witch is hardly devoid of wine shops but nothing here even comes close. When I got my motorcycle my first trip was to Down the Rabbit Hole and it was worth every second. I'm very much looking forward to my next visit. read more

Shakespeare once said, "What's in a name..." When it comes to the name "Down the Rabbit Hole" there is a simple answer, everything! This metaphor sets the tone for what awaits under the blue awning and behind the glass door of this tiny Main Street storefront. You'll have to forgive me for not taking measurements but trust me when I tell you this place is small. The entire store is about as wide as the front door and maybe 10-15 feet deep. One side of the boutique is lined with shelves for the wine and the other is mirrored, a great touch for creating an expansive feel in a small space. In the back of the store is a small but interesting table that is set up as the register/tasting counter and conveniently slides away so the staff can move between the register and retail space. Unlike your traditional wine buying experience Down the Rabbit Hole organizes their wine by flavor and taste rather than country of origin. You can find the wine organized is sections with hand painted signs depicting styles such as spicy, fruity, floral, sparkling and more. This element in addition to the overall set up the store adds to the allure and enchantment. An incredible staff is the icing on the cake for this enological hot spot. I've had the pleasure of speaking with owner, Suzanne as well as other staffers all of whom have been knowledgeable and helpful. They are all always eager to discuss what it available and offer tastings. The unique varieties I have found at Down the Rabbit Hole are unlike any others I've found on Long Island or the city for that matter. They usually come with a great story and a description of how Suzanne found them. The 2009 Papillon I'm currently sipping is a prime example. Prost! Salute! Santé! read more

Talk about a quaint little rabbit hole, this place is adorable in every way! My friend and I were shopping on main street in Sayville and came across this little gem. When you open the door, your attention immediately goes to all of the wine neatly organized against the walls of the tiny store. We spent quite a bit of time just looking at all the types of wine. I have to say, they had very different wines compared to the typical commercialized options. There was a very sweet woman working who offered us a sample of some of the wines and talked to us about each wine we were interested in. I walked out with two very unique bottles and so did my friend. I highly recommend this place. I will certainly be back for another visit! read more

This is such a unique find! This wine shop is sandwiched between two larger properties on a main street in Sayville. It gives the space a charming quality reminiscent of falling down a rabbit hole! PROS:The wines are purposely chosen by the owner/staff. The store offers and is knowledge about a wide range of wines. Sampling may be available. The place is unique! I think foodies would appreciate this find. CONS: If you are on a tight budget, your options may be fairly limited. Also as this store is substantially smaller than other wine shops nearby, the number of wine brands offered are also limited. read more

Size doesn't matter and not only doesn't size matter, talk about being inverse proportional to the max. This is the smallest wine shop I've ever been to oozing an insane amount of charm, perhaps the most charm I've ever seen (for a wine shop). Suzy (sp?) is the owner and I was brought here by my buddy a few weeks back. The collection of wines is vast for the size, she's willing to let you taste while you're choosing and doesn't rush you at all. Suzy seems to be fairly knowledgeable and carries a good cross selection of grapes from a variety of wine growing regions. I'm definitely making it my go to spot when I'm in the area. It's located at the Southwest corner of Railroad Ave (aka Lakeland Ave) and Montauk Highway (at the traffic light). My only complaint is that she doesn't carry any Long Island wines :(. If you're like me you love wine but are not 100% exactly sure what you're drinking. Also, when you go to a typical wine shop and ask for a bottle they'll point out a few but again never really give you the full story behind the wine. The owner of Down the Rabbit Hole, Suzanne, and her staff know everything there is to know about the wines on the shelves at this slim and trim shop. Each wine has a great story and depending upon your taste they can point you in the direction of your perfect bottle. If you're looking for a gift this is the only place you should go, trust me the wine you buy will be unique and will stand out amongst any other. I recently had a wine tasting party. I asked Suzanne if she could put together some selections. Not only did she do a great job picking the wines, she came by our home and helped provide information to our guests about the pairings. Down the Rabbit Hole is the place to pick up a great bottle of wine when you are looking to impress! The artisan wine boutique carries rare bottles you won't find anywhere else in NY State - sometimes so rare you won't find it in the Northeast. The owner, a former competitive figure skater, picked up a great skill of finding and knowing great wine. The shop has an Alice in Wonderland theme and is really small - about the size of a hallway. Still, its a very cute, little place. Bottle cost ranges from as low as $15 and up to over $100. Wine collectors and those who enjoy an occasional taste will enjoy. They're all categorized by sweet , spice and fruity wines. The pricing ranges from like a 25$ bottle to 100$ and they all look beautiful and unique. Wonderful shop!
