This is a place I enjoy going very often. Recently, I experienced a disappointing and confusing experience with the attendance rules. Those rules were no where listed online. You can purchase individual classes online when you see the class open but if you are 5 min late, your spot can be given to a to waitlisted person that is on time even though you purchased your spot. And that is because they reach capacity. If your spot is paid for what is the value in giving it away? And prioritize waitlist?! It's not easy to make it on time sometimes but this way you have spot secured. There is no Information on their website about what happens if you arrive late and all you can see is a class available for purchase. This is a strange rule that seems to just try to get as many people signed as possible with more spots that they have available. If someone paid for a class why give that spot away?! It is really disappointing to go back home after trying to juggle several situations and be turned away when you secured a spot. read more

I loved it! Previous reviews mentioned moralizing or excessive philosophizing (which also drives me nuts during a yoga class ... like, it's not that deep) but there was no hint of that in the class I took with Dina. I've been looking for a close, affordable, not-hot yoga place to me after trying Corepower and Baptiste. Sometimes you just want a regular, unheated yoga where ... you don't smell everyone around you. Or the class right before yours. Down Under showed up on ClassPass and I tried the Monday morning Flow class. The facilities are clean and well-kept, and I loved the natural light in the studio. When I headed downstairs, there was no one at the check-in desk, so I was a little lost as to where the lockers were until I realized they were staring at me in the face. The props were also located outside the studio. A virtual option is available if you don't feel like coming in-person. Dina was a great instructor - warm, inviting, offered tons of modifications and encouragement for everyone, no extraneous talking, making sure the people on the Zoom were included. Also, unlike other classes, there was no sign of ego at all, and perhaps more importantly, there was SPACE to move around in and focus on yourself. With some hot yoga classes, there is barely enough room to step around the mats, and I personally get really distracted when someone's foot or hand is about to bump into me. I love this little yoga oasis in Newtonville. I love that they offer different types of yoga (vinyasa, iyengar, astanga, hot), and other movement modalities that complement yoga. They do a good job of keeping the studio clean and tidy, especially in the winter months when everyone is tracking snow in. The one thing I do wish is that they had a bigger studio space - the common spaces before and after class can get pretty crowded, especially when you're trying to leave. Maybe add an extra 5-10 mins before and after class to account for this. Not a huge deal, but I know something like that can be chaotic for someone who isn't expecting it. I think this yoga studio literally saved my life on more than one occasion. It's consistent, clean, user-friendly, reliable, organized, and the teachers have enough of a distinct style, each their own (i.e. Gregor's classes are relaxing, Shawna's classes are challenging, everyone sort of has a distinct approach) so you can know what to expect. Whenever I want to go to a yoga class every once in a while down under is a good option. It's not my regular yoga studio but great for pop ins every once in a while. I usually stick to the flow classes that are not heated. I find the heated classes to be extremely hot and uncomfortable for me. This could be because I'm used to doing unheated yoga so if you are into hot yoga you would probably enjoy the hot classes. I have tried a few non vinyasa/flow classes that have not been my favorite. I have been practicing yoga for years and after going to a month of yoga $49 special, I have questioned why I practice. The idea that these physical poses somehow have a moral connection is simply arrogant and typical of Newton. While I have not visited the other locations, the teachers at the Newton location were very interested in talking about moral judgment and used heady language and condescending tones and remarks. My review is based on customer service associated with providing accommodations for people with disabilities, promises made, and showing some dignity and respect, regardless who was in the right. I'm deaf and do not consider myself 'disabled,' per se, unless I'm treated in ways that is marginalizing and disrespectful. Furthermore, my input here is associated with the person who took my call who happened to represent Down Under Yoga hence not the organization as a whole. Nevertheless, I gave this a 1-star rating given the intensity of the sour taste she left in my mouth upon the discontinuance of the call, and feel at this point, I could never step a foot into this franchise, all because of one of their personnels. Prior to COVID, I registered and paid for two classes at the Newtonville studio, for my daughter and myself. I provided info regarding my communication needs prior to entering the studio and again upon arrival, e.g., for the instructor to do the best to remain within the range of my vision and to enunciate so I can see what is being said. As it turned out, the instructor moved around a lot and when on the floor, she frequently turned her head the other way while speaking. I offered constructive feedback to the instructor who was very receptive. She shared my feedback with the manager/owner who was gracious enough to offer me two free guess admittance for our next visit and that this info would be recorded into my file. The pandemic hit and then I became a member of Chestnut Hill LifeTime Fitness where I immensely enjoyed their yoga classes, in addition to my existing membership at Boston Sports Club (25 years), hence I did not have an opportunity to return to Down Under Yoga. Earlier today, I called and spoke with Shelly at Down Under Yoga to register for their 6pm class for my daughter and myself. She pulled up my file and did not see any records of 2 complimentary passes. She said that the studio would not have honored it due to the length of time that had passed as they contain expiration dates. Shelly did not take into account that I was never given a hardcopy voucher nor was one sent to me electronically, but that I was assured 2 visits would be honored at our next visit. Shelly kept repeating herself regarding the expiration date and the length of time that had passed without taking into consideration of my explanation that there were no expiration dates given to me. Shelly then said, "If you don't want to sign up for the class, then have a good weekend." When I told her I could hear (through the video relay operator) sarcasm. Her response was, "I'm calm, but yes, there's a little bit of sarcasm." When I told her that in Yoga, this is supposed to help balance the mind, body, and soul and that her tone is adding to the stress, she said, "I'm sorry you feel that way, have a good weekend." Then I suggested maybe I should write a review to share my experience, she responded, "You can write whatever review you like. If you don't want to pay for the class, and write a review, that's fine." We concluded the call. I don't think I've ever experience anything like this where a customer service personnel deliberately belittles a customer, or a potential customer. Even if I was wrong and whether or not the length of time passed was too long to honor the promised verbal voucher, no one should encounter customer service as I have experienced, hence the reason I'm writing a review for the first time ever. Again, I'm certain that the behavior of this customer service personnel is not reflective of Down Under Yoga and hope someone in their management office will reach out to me and assure me of that. In the meantime, my daughter and I had a wonderful experience at CorePower Yoga in Newton earlier this evening. Without expecting it, they gave each of us 7-day free passes to start with. This is a definition of good quality customer service where members want to return and share with their family and friends. read more

Just not my vibe at all. I'm sure this is a great studio for some (maybe even a lot?) of people but I just didn't like it. The class I took was supposed to be a challenging hot yoga class, but the room was barely warm and the class was very easy and pretty boring. Also, several people in the class smelled very, very strongly of weed. I really don't care what anyone does, but it's not cool to come to yoga smelling like weed (or alcohol, strong perfume, etc.). If it was just one person, I would have let it go, but it was multiple people and it was STRONG. To sum it up, class was far easier than advertised and the room smelled like weed. If that's your thing, great. Go for it. Otherwise, maybe look elsewhere. read more

This review has definitely been a long time coming... As a Waltham resident, I've tried most of the studios within 15 mins of my house (Waltham Yoga, Inner Strengths etc.). Honestly, I've enjoyed my time at all of them - they all have something unique to bring to the table. However, I've exclusively been at Down Under Yoga for a little over 2 years now - and I'm typically someone who constantly changes studios. DUY is a place where you can truly grow and discover your yoga practice. The fact that they offer so many classes throughout the day and have such a diverse array of teachers allows me to really tailer my yoga to my mood/how my body is feeling that particular day. To me, that is THE most important thing a studio can offer me: flexibility and variety. A lot of studios simply don't offer the number and variety of classes that DUY does (and they do it for the same price tag or less). Once you get to know all the instructors you can really get the most out of the studio offerings. I've changed and altered my yoga schedule on literally a weekly basis since I started coming here. I would highly recommend Kate & Dina's flow foundations class to start if you are new/coming back to the practice. The 'Flow' classes GREATLY range in "difficulty" depending on the instructor so I recommend trying all the teachers out until you get a feel for their style. Some move much faster (Sami, Michael, Amy) and some slower - NOT EASIER :-p (JoJo, Danielle, Roxie) - It's been over two years and I still haven't even tried the Iyengar classes which the studio is known for - I'm sure I will at some point. I can honestly say DUY is THE reason I've been so dedicated to my yoga practice the past 2 years. I'm continuously inspired by the teachers and what they have to offer their students. From its quiet, under-the-radar beginings in a church rec room, Down Under Yoga has blossomed into something elegant and remarkable with the launch of its dedicated space right in the heart of Newtonville. Down Under Yoga is a subterranean zen oasis. Shoes, boots, and umbrellas stay in the vestibule upstairs, while the check-in area and studios are down below. The decor is crisp, clean, and simple. Classy not flashy. There is plenty of elbow room in the reception area, and the bathrooms/changing rooms are spacious and spa-like. The line-up of instructors at Down Under is top-notch--many of whom are well-known and respected internationally--and deeply rooted in the "old school" ways of sharing yoga from teacher to student. Nothing preachy, sales-y, or hippie to be found here. With that said, I think that Down Under Yoga is a wonderfully accessible place for people from all walks of life to experience yoga. There are a wide variety of class styles taught here (most of which are not taught in a hot room). Man or woman, young or not so young--everyone can feel comfortable here. Classes with Chanel and Bonnie (who mostly teach in Boston proper) are a welcome treat for us suburbanites. Barbara's mastery of anatomy and verbal cues is remarkable. And Justine, the Aussie owner of this gem of a studio, is pure sunshine. read more

Angelina's Saturday 4pm class is the best yoga class I have ever taken. As a physical therapist, it is often difficult for me to find a yoga class/instructor that I not only agree with in terms of the pose progressions, but also the language used to describe the poses and their intentions. Angelina does an excellent job of educating her students both from a biomechanical perspective but also challenges the student from a deeper, personal perspective. Angelina challenges you without ever intimidating you. She is a fantastic teacher for anyone ranging from a complete beginner to the seasoned yogi. read more

This place is wonderful. I'm not one to strike up conversations with other yoga students before or after class, but the staff and other patrons were genuinely friendly and I ended up having pleasant conversations with several people at the studio. The class itself (heated flow) was challenging, but approachable. It was my first class after a hiatus of several weeks and the teacher gave me a back massage while I was in child's pose when I got overheated. The only thing this class is missing is a locker room and showers. Unfortunately, that would keep me from coming more often because it's too time consuming to return home to shower after class. read more

I started going to Down Under Yoga in September and it's definitely my go to place when I have a hankering for some yoga. They offer different ways to participate and they have a great beginner package: $25 for unlimited 2 weeks. I personally prefer the 10 pass, use them whenever option so I can fit a practice in when my schedule allows. The studio has two very well equipped rooms (blocks, straps, blankets, etc). It has a spa like feel and you are truly down under (basement level) which shields you from outside noise and distraction. Down Under Yoga offers many styles and levels of yoga - slow flow, relaxation to crank the heat and bring every muscle to the limit. I've been to many types and teachers and have started to find my favorites to visit again. During busy class switch over times you may need to do an intricate dance at the entrance to remove or put on your shoes before heading down. read more

Have recently begun practicing at Down Under. The studio is surprisingly beautiful, and in a decent location with easy parking, a grocery store ("honey I'm going to go 'run errands'"), and a few coffee shops (great for morning yoga classes). The classes are good for the most part--the styles are very diverse, so try the teachers out to see what one fits with your style. My one suggestion to DUY would be to have showers and/or a locker room...the lack of both stifled my ability to go straight to work after morning classes. read more

I have always had a great experience here. The teachers are top notch and really care. The studio is clean. They are really good at helping you with adjustments if you have any injuries. They even swiffer the floor between every class! Their relax and renew classes are divine. This places is great for all ages, they even have pre-natal yoga, mom and baby classes and beyond. I've been going for several years now and have brought friends who love it too. I recommend getting the $30 for 30 days package if you want to check it out. So many great teachers, each with their own style so you are bound to find a fit for you. Please note there are no showers here but their are two changing rooms and twon bathrooms. I've only been going to DUY for a few weeks now after moving back to the area, and I've only taken from 2 different instructors so far, but I can already tell that this studio will be my new yoga home! Every single staff member and fellow yoga enthusiast I've met so far has been super welcoming. I'm especially fond of Peter's Monday night class ... it kicks my butt every time but his attention to alignment is exactly what I want & need. Well, i have been looking for a reasonable yoga place in town and this was a bargain but only for the first month though. They offer $30 for first time clients on their first month. They have two studios in town, which is good. They're studio in Newton is a bit small though and when i went it was pretty full. I have yet to go to the Brookline studio. read more

This is not something one finds that often. I love coming to this studio when I can make a class. However, they no longer offer parent/child classes. It would be so wonderful if they had a family yoga class e.g. on a Sunday so that one could partake in yoga with one's kids. I've found one studio that does this, and so go there instead of Down Under. read more

Down Under Yoga has amassed some of the biggest names in yoga instructors, but is still one of the most welcoming, authentic communities I've ever experienced. You can literally feel the difference when you walk thru the doors. It is also the only studio I've experienced that doesn't have to push $200 yoga pants to survive. By far, the best yoga studio I've ever gone to. This place has amazing teachers and a variety of yoga classes. The teachers are professional and emphasize the proper alignment of the poses. They're knowledgeable and care about the students, oftentimes going around the room to demonstrate a pose or adjust/support their students. For Iyengar classes, I happily recommend Mary Wixted - I love her style and every class is carefully planned. Whether the end game is to stretch/strengthen the inner groins or the upper body, Mary shows us how to reach our goals by opening up our bodies through a variety of poses and repetition. For example, we may go into Warrior 2 a few times in order to really emphasize the different aspects of the pose: the proper alignment of the knee over the ankle, strengthening the back leg, sitting into the pose, etc. You get the point - every time we go into the pose, we're working to make it better. I love feeling like I've improved my practice and my flexibility at the end of the class without feeling like I forced my body into some impossible pose and I'm going to pay for it later! For flow/heated yoga, I love Angelina Hawley-Dolan. She integrates a little bit of Iyengar into the flow classes, emphasizing a good alignment while making us sweat. I love her narrative during the class, that's the only way I can describe it. She brings a lot of humor and a sense of lightheartedness to her classes - so I find myself pushing myself without even knowing it and actually very much enjoying it! Angelina has a way of describing a pose without confusing me - which I very much appreciate! ^_^ She doesn't make things more complicated than what they are, and she encourages students to try new things without hurting your body. I took a hot yoga class two weeks ago in Newtown place, I was shocked by the teacher used the Word with " F" during the class, in the end, she even cried for resting time. I am surprised to hear she has a lot of followers. For me, it is so unprofessional to teach with this type of the word start in the class. We are living in a modern society today. Joined with a "2 weeks for $25 pass" and am hooked. Thus far I have done Iyngar and Relax and Renew classes. There are Flow and Heated Flow classes too. The business side of the studio has me hooked too. I loved that I could sign up online, got a little RFID pass on my first visit, classes can be booked online, and that everything WORKS (a rarity!). My posture feels great after each session. Have to figure out how to work in 2 classes a week versus one. There are small (free) lockers for personal items and just discovered a place to hang coats.
