They've CHANGED!!!! I used to love love love Downey's chips. They reminded me of my favorite childhood potato chip, Detroit's own Dexter Davidson Grocery Store house brand chips. That super clean delicate light fried subtle crunch, that every chip on the market today lacks, was what the Downey's was known for. A very divisive texture, for it's either a chip you love, or you don't like - very unlike a super fried kettle style chip. Now, with the bag design change, the chip is apparently quite different than the chip that I adored. It's now a run of the mill 'kettle style' chip - and not a very good one at that. Think of if Lay's chips made a kettle chip (and they do - and I'm not a fan).....Very disappointing, and whomever is now driving the Downey's ship made a decision that torpedoed the fans that put them on the map......you may get the 'kettle chip' customers, but you lost your soul in the process..... Time to find a new favorite chip.....sad ending. Bye Downey's! read more

Best potato chips ever! My entire family loves them. These chips are a must have around the house and on camping trips. The unique flavor and crunch of these chips just can't be beat (yes, even with their new recipe)! Unlike most other brands, they actually taste like real potatoes. Plus, it's nice to support a locally owned and operated business. If you are in the area, I would suggest grabbing some Downey's at one of many grocery stores that carry them! I really hope Downey's is able to start selling these amazing chips in the Rochester Hills and Oxford Meijer stores very soon. I would be even happier if they did! read more

Okay, so the original and exceptionally delicious Downey's chips disappeared several years ago. The newer version was awful. Now they've revamped their chips again in new packaging, smaller size. I decided to try, hoping for some semblance of the original Downey's that were so special. To all previous Downey fans, save your money. These chips are cut so thin you can see through them, and they are greasy as heck. If anyone has found another brand that rivals the original Downey's, please comment. I miss them so! read more

Very sad. I will never buy another bag from them since they changed the chip. It was amazing when it was made with peanut oil and I wonder if they stopped because of peanut allergies (well I think that is what changed) I don't know for sure but they aren't the same and I am very disappointed. read more

I love the new look and taste of the Downey's brand and chip! I know they were forced to change the chip due to trans fat requirement changes, but honestly the new chip is cleaner and the flavor profile is really authentic... kudos Downey's... Looking for something genuinely interesting in the chip aisle? With the welter of new "kettle cooked" and baked and other gimmicky kinds of potato chips, not to mention the bizarre new flavors, it can be endlessly disappointing to try something new only to throw out the bag half-eaten. I don't know what process the Downey folk use in their plant back behind the gym on M59, and I'm not sure I want to know. All I can say is that it was love at first bite for us. There is nothing else quite like Downey's. The flavor is so interesting and complex, in fact, that there are both Downey's fanatics and Downey's haters, so be warned. Among the fanatics, finding a new store that carries Downey's is a major event, to be shared immediately with all one's friends. For the longest time, the only place we could buy them at was LaRosa Market in Sylvan Lake. Then we found them at Hiller's, and now we can buy them at Plum Market, too. I try not to snack too much, so when I do I go for the old familiar brands and flavors I love. I don't mind to play a hand or two at blackjack, but gambling with a snack - well, not so much. Casino chips vs potato chips, clearly I have my priorities straight.. One day at a market near us my husband urged me to try 'this chip'. Salty, briney Downeys Salt and Vinegar chips. Super crunchy cause they are kettle cooked, with a light S&V seasoning. The problem with S&V is that they tend to wreck my mouth after a few chips, Downeys variety don't do this - I can eat these to my hearts (and tongues) content. That, dear friends, is the exact danger of these damn chips. Between the awesome crunch and the nice seasonings (they also come in BBQ or regular salted flavors), these puppies are highly addictive. My husband describes them to be very potatoey, I can mainly tell the difference in oil they use for frying. The one thing about these that gets to me is just that; the oil. Though they aren't greasy per say, after a while it seems like a small film of, eh - for lack of a better explenation -"Crisco", covers my tongue, and I end up feeling like a dog that's been eating peanut butter.. I sure hope I don't look like one when I'm trying to shake the feeling. Mental note to self: only eat Downeys in the comfort of my home. Their cheese popcorn is worth a notable mention, and I've spotted the chips here in their Waterford location, at Joe's Produce on 7 & Farmington in Livonia and at the new Cantoro ' s in Northville at 5 & Haggerty. read more

I was born and raised in Waterford and the best thing about living there was Downey's potato chips ! When I moved to TN where I have lived for the past 30 years I always made sure I had a steady supply through trips home, friends and family coming down to visit . But the last time I was brought some I was devastated .......................the bag was much smaller for the same price and not only had the look changed but so had the taste......................they were nasty ! I threw all 6 bags away, that's how bad they were . I have found that they have changed their cooking oil and now use sea salt which is what has made the difference in the taste . I used to love Downey's Potato Chips ... hands down they used to be the best potato chips I've ever had. I've even had them shipped to where I live near Chicago for a Super Bowl party a few years ago. I always look forward to my Dad bringing them when he comes to visit my family or when he has them at his house in Michigan. However, after my last visit to the Flint area last month, I found out the hard way (after I bought 6 bags to take back to Chicago with me) that Downey's changed something about their chips. Now they just taste like potato chips from any OTHER chip company like Ruffles, Lays or Jays. They're good, but so are chips from other companies. They're not awesome like Downey's Potato Chips used to be. I'm bummed!!! I used to really look forward to getting these as a special treat from Michigan. I live in Houston, TX now but Michigan is home. Downey chips have been my favorite chips and I have missed them since I've moved to Texas. My mom recently made the trip down here and I asked her to bring a couple of bags of my favorite chips. After pouring myself a bowl and tasting my first chip I had to check the bag to make sure they were indeed Downey chips. I thought I was eating any other ordinary chip. I hate to say this but they were awful. I understand that things change but this is a total 360! I didn't enjoy them at all nor will I request a special delivery ever again. I love Downeys chips! To me they were the best on the market! I'll admit, at times they could be a bit greasy, but most of the time, they taste like Russet potatoes! A good strong potato flavor, that I crave the moment I wake up in the morning! I love that flavor. This is what set Downeys apart from other chips! My husband bought home a new bag the other day. The bag is new! I got a little nervous when I saw the bag had changed! The chips inside were changed too! They were still crispy and less greasy, but that great POTATO taste is gone! They are now, just another crispy kettle chip! The taste that set them apart from other kettle chips has been lost in your new flavor! What happened! Please bring back that flavor us Downey lovers crave! This is what set you apart from the rest. Without that great potato taste, I can honestly say, I wont buy them as much as I used to. I finally gave these chips a try after seeing them at Hollywood supermarket. I have to say I was deeply disappointed with the taste. These chips have a very heavy, greasy taste up-front... so much so you feel like you could or should only eat a few vs. half the bag. The chips don't have much potato flavor as the greasy taste is so prominent. The potato flavor is definitely secondary. Very unhealthy tasting with a lingering aftertaste of grease. Ehh! They should call these "Grease Chips" and not Potato Chips. It's too bad because I would have loved to find another local brand to support. I will continue to support Better Made which is WAY better in every way. I can't believe some people find these remotely palatable let alone great tasting. read more

These chips are strange as f*ck. They taste bland and of oil. They are crunchy but there is an offensive mouth feel afterwards that is exactly like someone said "your tongue is covered in crisco." I have termed it 'milk mouth.' I have only tried the original. I feel like salt and vinegar might cover up that taste of oil but I'm afraid to have another disappointing experience. I found Downey's Chips at Oliver T's Gormet Market near Grand Blanc, MI on Hill Rd, just off I-475. Absolutely love them!! It took immense self-control to keep from eating half the bag before I got home. Whatever they do to get the taste, they're the best I have ever had. I now live in Phoenix, Arizona and cannot find anything here that comes close. I have to have them shipped from the company. Downey's Potato Chips are the BEST!! read more

Some people seem to have the worst taste buds ever. These chips are the best I've ever had! And I know a thing or two about eating!

I have been buying Downey's chips for 30 years. Even going as far as making a longer drive to a market that carries them. They were an absolute favorite in my family being a staple at gatherings or stocking up for a camping trip, etc. Unfortunately someone made the decision to change the frying oil from peanut to canola recently and now they are... ordinary. I can find that same type of flavor in just about every other brand of chips lining the grocery store shelf. I fear I'm not the only one to feel this way. Those die-hard fans who enjoyed the greasy indulgence of the old Downey's chips will also fizzle away to find other brands that will fill that unique chip void. Downeys were purchased knowing you weren't eating a healthy snack but a treat that hit the junk food spot. The kind of snack worthy of cheating on a diet for. I hope whoever is in charge at Downey's makes the decision to go back to peanut oil. Until then I'll be looking for a replacement that isn't like every other boring chip on the market. read more

IMy wife and I have been eating Downey's Potato Chips for about 3 years, or as long as they have been available at the Kroger Store on Card Road and 21 Mile Road in Macomb Township. We have really enjoyed the taste and freshness of the chips. However, the last three bags we have purchased contained a large amount of "burnt" potato chips. I finally took a bag back to Kroger and asked for a replacement bag, and they kindly agreed. Then I arrived home and opened the bag and guess what -- more burnt chips!!! Today bought last bag of Downey chips. That's a lot for me been buying them since original family open on Dixie Hwy., a long time. Not a bag at a time but 6-7 at a time after all only bought ever 2 wks. I have driven from Lansing when I moved, then had them shipped when I stayed outside Chicago, then in Ky. Now back home couldn't get to Downey fast enough. I knew original family had sold, I cried all the way to Ky with my last bags. My first bag was ok. So I continued but they went down the trash before I ate them all. Now I used to get a lot of bags of chips, caramel corn, seasonal tin cans you name it. But today was my last bag to hit the trash after 3 chips. Didn't like the sea salt to me it was too much, so today I got the way ones. Imagine my surprise when I couldn't bite them but had to break them. And the expiration date is 08/19/19! What a huge disappointment my die for potato chips are not up to standards I came to love. Didn't even get a nice greeting from New people when first went to the shop, so have no sadness saying don't waste your money. Lays lightly salted aren't that bad. read more

I have been eating these for years!!! I absolutely love the Salt and Vinegar ones, by far the best I have EVER had! They are so good I will eat a whole bag in a sitting and have to buy at least 3 bags at a time if I can find them because they fly off the shelves! Be careful because they will make your tongue raw (the things I deal with for love of a chip lol) so far I have found them at VG's in Fenton, Kroger on Dixie Highway, Tenuta's in Waterford and Holly Foods in Holly. I live up north now and I gladly drive an hour and a half once a month to stock up!!! My mother loves the plain salted ones (they are awesome as well) is a chips and dip maniac and these chips are so good, you don't need any dip, they actually don't taste as good if you use dip! read more

No idea why people are so critical of these chips. They are made by hand and taste great to me. The hand - crafted quality seems apparent. No mistake, they aren't ultra healthy, but they are way closer to natural and "close to the earth" without preservatives or additives than any other chip that I've had. I'm a fan of all the flavors, but the salt and vinegar are dangerously addictive. read more

They are back. There is a certain time of year when they switch to a different potato for a while so they are not near as good, but when they switch back to the good ones, it is manna from heaven. I wish I knew when the switch occurs exactly but I don't. read more
