Recycled Records is a vinyl emporium in the heart of Monterey. After a wonderful day exploring the aquarium and boardwalk, a record store was exactly what the doctor ordered. The shop is the perfect size if you ask me. Some record stores are honestly too big and can be often overwhelming from the moment you set foot inside. Here you'll find predominantly used vinyl, with the majority being rock, jazz, pop, and country. Also a pretty good selection of 45s, which I always enjoy sifting through! When I'm on vacation, I love finding new records which are in better condition. I found a few albums from artists I hold close to home. Ended up walking out with the following: Deftones - Diamond Eyes Orville Peck - Pony Metallica - Creeping Death 12" single on gold vinyl The shop dude was friendly and knowledgeable. It was me and only other two customers in there. He ended up changing the music to The Doors self titled first album, which is a reliable choice to accommodate most music tastes in a record store. I am obsessed with this little record shop. The owners are so incredibly kind and it is so clear that they love what they do. You can tell that they put a lot of love and thoughtfulness into curating their shop. Their music selection is also INSANE. So many gems. Especially the female vocalist section!!! I love this local spot for vinyl and I always find at least five or six records to buy in the new arrivals. Found some SERIOUSLY rare stuff at Recycled Records. Even Einstürzende Neubauten! You never know what you'll discover. Tons of 45's too. The staff is super kind. They play great music while you're shopping, such a great vibe! Still my favorite record store in the area. They have a good stock of used CDs and a mix of mostly used and some new records. I eyed 3 record store day leftovers I wanted to add to my collection, but opted for the far too many bargain finds. Always leave here with my hands full. Cash is king, although you can still charge it for a fee. Parking in back is a bonus, as is the used bookstore and tiki bar next door. read more

Perfect record store, unlike a lot of smaller record stores that jack up the prices. THIS is the perfect store, because they sell vinyl at NORMAL VALUE. I am always pleasantly surprised that everytime i come in here there is always at least one record on my long-time wants list just sitting there in used/new arrivals section. I found a rare album from one of my favorite bands; Faith No More - "The Real Thing" . They're batting 1,000. Also super cool staff who are not bothered if you need a little help. Super sweet people a cozy shop for vinyl lovers. We have a vacuum tube system which begs for records rather than digital siding sound. My husband was looking specifically for the Dark Side of the Moon, an audiophile pressing reissue, and though they didn't have it, referred us to another record store in the area. This is such a terrific community of people with a a common love of specialized music medium. First impressions are important and the impression I was left with today was deplorable. The shop itself is fine. Not very big, organized alphabetically by genre and a decent selection. My wife and 2 year old daughter accompanied me as I dug through the stacks. Before I get to my point I have to emphasize that there is nothing wrong with the shop other than being a bit cluttered. The problem is with the owner( I believe) and the employee there at the time. They had been arguing about something over the phone and then the owner came in and the argument escalated. It was very awkward to be there and hard to concentrate on shopping. The employee was very professional when ringing up a customer, but she was not happy with whatever the situation was. The owner berated the poor girl, calling her "brain dead" and telling her that she was so stupid and continued to insult her loudly in front of the customers. Finally, the girl was done being insulted and quit on the spot. She screamed F___k you stormed off slamming the door. I was appalled at the owner's treatment of the employee. My wife and I left immediatelly. We didn't want to give this guy any of our money. read more

I previously described Boo Boo Records in San Luis Obispo as a true find for music aficionados. I'm glad to add another store to my list to find a wide selection of CDs and DVDs at good prices. Recycled Records has a wonderful selection of vinyl, CDs, cassettes, 8-tracks (!), and DVDs at quite reasonable prices. There's no new products as far as I could see, but the name is "Recycled Records" so why would I expect otherwise? Shawn, who I think is the owner, is helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. I didn't purchase any hifi equipment while I was there, but I did see an Onkyo receiver that looked appealing (I could hear my Luddite spouse asking "do we really need it?), also a Yamaha "Natural Sound" cassette deck. There's always vinyl being played over a pair of Bose 301 speakers, which provides a comfortable atmosphere for shopping. My son found the entire Harry Potter series, I came away with four (4) CDs, including "The Best of Joan Baez," featuring the gorgeous "Diamonds and Rust" (it sounded so wonderful in my car). We visit Monterey a couple of times a year, we look forward to our next visit! read more

This is by far the best of Monterey Bay recycled record stores. I buy all of my music albums and DVD movies here. He has the best selection . Sometimes I receive coupons printed on a monopoly money and get extra savings. read more

Its been under new ownership for about a year now. Since then, I've noticed two major detractors: A. The prices for records have exponentially increased. - Part of the charm of buying vinyl in the era of iTunes is that its cheap. I can't describe the feeling that washes over me when upon finding my favorite 10cc album priced at a measly $1.99. If you're gunna make me pay $7.99, I might as well buy the digital version. This need serious consideration if you are to remain in business. B. The selection of quality music is poor. No one wants any record found in on your $1.00 menu. This includes the catalogs of Marshall Tucker Band, The Carpenters, Peter Frampton, the Captainand Tennille, etc. read more

Don't know where/how to start. This place is just fantastic. Of course it helps that I'm a vinyl junkie, but I still have expectations, and Recycled Records has little to no trouble meeting them. First off, you enter the palace, and it you immediately notice that classic record store vibe you want and love. Small, but packed, something classy playing over the speakers, and an older man greeting you immediately. The mood is set, now time to dig. Great, classic selection, just what you'd expect. On the right side wall are what seem to be the newer releases, highly convenient and a great treat if that's what you're looking for. Lot's of Beatles memorabilia around the whole store, which as a Beatlemaniac, I laud! Of course like most local record stores, Hip Hop is mostly ignored, a big bummer, but just the other day I found a remastered, 2-LP version of Notorious B.I.G's "Ready to Die" which was the last thing I expected to find there. Add that to the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab edition of "Pinkerton" by Weezer, and you have one satisfied customer. I wish the 831 had more record shops, especially in Salinas, but this will do! Oh and everyone that works there is extremely friendly and helpful, can't ask for much else! read more

I spend way too much money at Recycled Records. This is due in part to their prices being a little high at times, but even if they were brought down to what I think is fair, I'd still spend way too much money here, so excellent is the selection. I mean, it's not so good that you're going to find the record you're looking for necessarily. But if you appreciate music and have an open mind, you can go in there once a week and find four or five awesome albums to add to your collection, and it'll cost you about twenty to thirty bucks. This is exactly what I do, just about every Saturday. On top of this, Sean, the owner, is a very friendly guy, and the location is great. Highly recommended. I went looking for country vinyl. I left with country vinyl. Not the greatest haul ever but the records we're priced to sell and fun to dig through. A little too much standard stock and a little high priced on the modern ('80s/'90s) stuff but, for the most part, when you find something you want you can walk out happy. read more

This place had so much vinyl, I didn't know what to do with myself! Got a Bouncing Souls/Anti Flag EP I have been wanting forever. My girlfriend got herself some awesome stuff from Joy Division and Nirvana. The albums are all fairly priced, about expected for retail. Vinyl isn't cheap. I found an Audio-Technica turntable in the corner after some browsing. They are worth about $150 on the eBay market. It was marked at just $99. I thought there might be an issue, but I am using it now and it works like new. It felt good to come to Monterey just for a fun day with my girlfriend and find such an awesome little shop. The employee was pretty laid back and wasn't overly talkative, but he was very helpful and polite. We shared a love of video games, which was cool. Anyways, go here if you are looking for vinyl in just about any genre. I found so much random stuff, it was hard to pick just one. read more

When I was a teenager, my dream job was to work in a record store, and be surrounded by vinyl 8 hours a day. Going to Recycled Records brings me back to those days of flipping through vinyl records and spending what little money I could stash away on my growing record collection. This is not a go in and get a CD/Record and leave sort of place. Its a place where patience and persistence pays off and you spend an hour flipping through the bins inhaling the aroma of vinyl and cardboard. A recent visit offered up a NIN remix I didn't have and a Dave Edmunds record I didn't know I needed :). The stock changes weekly and you never know what you might find on any given day. Its always an enjoyable place to spend an hour or two. And btw, I still want to work in a record store... read more
