I decided to go for their Birria, and honestly, it completely exceeded my expectations. If you see this truck, stop what you're doing and get in line! Let me get straight to the point: the Birria was SO. DAMN. GOOD. Seriously, some of the best I've had in a long time, especially from a mobile vendor. You could taste the freshness immediately. The meat was incredibly tender, flavorful, and had that deep, rich complexity you look for in perfectly cooked birria. It wasn't greasy, just pure, delicious flavor in every single bite. And the consumé? It was also very good! Rich, savory, and the absolute perfect companion for dipping. It wasn't just an afterthought; it complemented the birria beautifully and added another layer of deliciousness to the whole experience. What really sealed the deal for me, beyond the fantastic taste, was the value. They give you a really generous quantity of food - I was definitely full and satisfied afterward. Considering how fresh and high-quality everything tasted, the price felt absolutely perfect. The truck was well designed with a rather expansive menu for a food truck. Being a new food truck I asked them what would be the best thing to order, then promptly (and foolishly) ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich. Although the seasoning on the crust of the chicken was good, there were a few other problems with the sandwich. The chicken meat seemed really dry and the crust itself was a bit darker than I would like. I did like that they included chips, but I'm partial to salt and vinegar. Some of the chips seemed like it was saltier than the others. For an accompanying side, I ordered sweet potato fries. The fries were unsalted, stuck together, and seemed a bit soggy (oil not hot enough?). Overall it seems to me that Sandwich Bar Express definitely has some issues to iron out. The pricepoint was a bit high for the quality of food that I was given. They should definitely cut down on their huge menu and focus on perfecting a few choice items.

The line wasn't very long but we waited an incredibly frustratingly long time for our single cheesesteak and onion rings. Why would your order Onion Rings ($4) do you ask? Because they were out of fries. This was especially unfortunate, because these onion rings were particularly bad. There were four or five of these massive things sitting in a brown paper bag. Before the grease ate through the entire bag, I opened it up to find the big brown rings of batter with tiny slivers of onions somewhere deep inside. I took one bite and was pretty much done with them. On to the Cheesesteak ($6.50 for the smaller 6 inch size), things were much better. I went with White American Cheese (as opposed to Whiz) and added the onions (free of charge), and left it at that (kept it classic without choosing any of the add-ons at 75 cents each). It did actually have quite a delicious flavor, and was reminiscent of the taste you get in Philly, if not as good. The bread was a major problem as it was way too soft, but not soft in the good chewy way that the bread usually is. If the line is short and you aren't a Cheesesteak snob, by all means give this place a shot, as they make a pretty tasty sandwich at a decent price.

However, by 12:30 on a Tuesday, they were already out of provolone and were out of green peppers. Booo. I ordered a cheesesteak with American cheese, grilled onions, and sweet peppers. My co-workers followed suite with a changes of add-ons. Once I got to eat the sandwich...I was a bit nonplussed. I guess I had been building it up in my head for so long. It wasn't bad, and I enjoyed it, but it was a bit bland. To the chagrin of any true cheesesteak purist, I took some of my co-worker's dipping sauce from her onion rings and spread it on my sandwich to give it a little bit more flavor. Still! The meat was tender, as were the onions and peppers. The roll held up well and was soft and chewy. The onion rings, actually, were quite phenomenal! Each place only offers 1 to 3 dishes and have a lot of it prepared, if you want food from it you must buy tickets and each restaurant prices their dishes by the # of tickets (i.e. 3 tickets for a taco). It makes it more efficient and gives you a chance to taste more food and become more of a fan of their food. Overall I enjoyed it - I will try to get there earlier so I don't have to worry about the lines.

Sadly, execution was a letdown. I haven't been to the first few PARKED! festivals so I can't comment on how the logistics compared, but the lines and crowds made this festival hard to enjoy. The 30 food trucks participating were lined up on cobblestoned Fulton St, Front St, South St, Water St, and a few right outside Pier 17. Fourteen "local vendors" had stands, along with many others selling food and miscellaneous goods all around, although they served more as a distraction from the main event. A beer garden with a small, diverse selection out on the pier. Scheduled live music and kids' events rounded out the entertainment. The festival ran from 10 AM - 9 PM, and there was a VIP pass valid in the evening hours that allows you to bypass the ridiculous lines (Fast Pass style) in exchange for 10 bites from 10 trucks. The lines, the lines, the lines. Unlike festivals with an entry fee, each truck still had to take individual orders and payments, a major rate-limiting step. And while they're usually designed to prepare orders in a hurry, that doesn't mean they can keep up with the number of people this festival attracted. Thank goodness we arrived at 11 AM. At that point, the festival was fun. No more than 1 - 2 people on any given line (except for Korilla BBQ and Kimchi Taco), you could actually enjoy your food without turning around and hitting someone with it. We got and enjoyed food from four trucks by 12 PM, when most lines now required sleuthing to locate the ends, as they snaked back and forth and around each other. By 1 PM, Fulton St was a sea of people. Add together the 15 min+ wait for food at EACH truck, the limited real estate in the area, and very limited public seating, and it just stops being fun. As for the food trucks, I think it was a good representation. I'm sure everyone's got a truck they wished were there, but I liked the selection. Got some Kimchee Tacos, Desi kati roll, Korilla burrito and tacos, Red Hook Lobster Pound roll, Van Leeuwan ice cream, Frites 'n' Meats frites, and Green Pirate juice. Rickshaw dumplings and a Go Burger got sampled by others in the group. I'd loved to have tried more but the crowds cooled our enthusiasm to stay. If they do it again, I'll be there, but will make it opening hour that I show next time!

Super refreshing, tart, sweet, exactly what you want after biking around Governors Island. Service was also SO fast, which honestly made it even better when you're hungry mid-bike ride.
