Last time I wrote a review for here I was not a homeowner. Now I've been one for over 12 years and I've been here many times over for goodies for my yard, gifts, treats for myself, etc, and it's become one of my favorite places in town so I figured I should finally give them good update! No matter the time of year I love visiting Downtown Home & Garden. My previous review stated, "I love any store where I can get tulip bulbs, a new bird house, a winter hat shaped like a Christmas tree, a new cookie sheet and a loaf of Zingerman's bread" and all that still rings true. But these days I also add national parks merch, gear for my dogs, holiday decor, kitchen gadgets and cookbooks and, perhaps most exciting for a Polish broad like myself, a variety of Polish pottery pieces. In the spring and summer months I can be found perusing peony bulbs for my garden, hummingbird feeders, bird seed and squirrel proof bird feeders, planters, plants/starters for my veggie garden, pest control and fertilizers, plus a variety of lawn decor and sculpture pieces, etc. Some things can be kind of pricey but you truly get what you pay for. Even after years out in the elements everything I've bought for my yard here is still in amazing condition, my plants from here always yield the most delicious fruits and veggies, and the little birdies are so happy with the snacks we provide them from their bins. read more

Interesting store that is probably really good if you're a suburban homeowner. For me, I liked that I was able to make friends with a cat that works there, got some cute socks and slippers for the Chief of Staff, a postcard (the only store in town where they knew what a postcard is), and a pretty ceramic bowl that my cats broke the minute it got home. read more

We had a layover in Ann Arbor while changing buses and were in the area just a month earlier when we discovered this place. When we heard it was sadly closing down at the end of the year, we made a special trip just to stop in here. It's a beautiful store with more than just gardening supplies. We picked up some toys for our cats as well as some Christmas ornaments and postcards as memorabilia. And I especially love how despite Luis the store cat passing away over 10 years ago, you can still find lots of references to him around the store. Really wish there was a way to save this place. :( read more

I love this whole stretch of stores at Downtown Home & Garden, located in the outskirts of downtown Ann Arbor and within easy walking distance of Main Street. This spot is dog friendly and even offers water bowls and dog treats to the furry friends walking by! Downtown Home & Garden stretches the entire block with different entrances to its various stores, whether it's patio furniture, kitchen supplies, garden/farm supplies, a greenhouse, a beer garden, outdoor gear, etc. There's a different store for each of these spots and it's always fun to go down the line here to peruse the rotating selection, even if I find that majority of the items that catch my eye are out of my budget! There's also Bill's Beer Garden adjacent to this stretch of DHG stores and what I believe to be a cute DHG event space behind their stores as well! Everything that I have purchased purchased from here is absolute quality and I love their selection so much for their unique offerings that I truly have been hard pressed to find anywhere else. Their products are elevated, so if you're looking for things that aren't just your run-of-the-mill and more personal and unique to you, your gear, your house or what have you, then this is definitely the spot for you! I love it here so much and when I do one day have my own house (currently in a condo), I know that I'll be coming back here to stock my space with a lot of what DHG has to offer! I'm in particular looking at the patio furniture options, gardening, and a ton of their kitchenware as well! Love this place!!!! read more

A really cool store to visit and shop. Very helpful and friendly staff. Great stuff for garden , home and pets, bird feeders, seed, soils, wind chimes, and the best place for all of the hard to find Stormy Kromer products. I can't speak of the parking situation in downtown Ann Arbor on the weekend but they do have their own parking lot and it was not too busy when we visited on a Thursday morning. DO NOT SHOP HERE! Their plants were packed in styrofoam and they sold me an orchid with a severely damaged root system and claim it's perfectly fine and will not give me a store credit. The owner called me a liar and never apologized for selling me a damaged product and claims to be. "master grower"but didn't disclose the root damage, stating that "out of bloom" is the same as "as is" which is NOT TRUE. This is a horrible business run by rude and horrible people and the orchid was my birthday present and I had no idea it was 90% damaged planted in styrofoam (something a "master grower" would never allow. I'm so upset and was treated so terribly on my birthday. Sad. Do not shop here read more

The people who work there make it the best place to shop. The vibe is always relaxed and they will go the extra mile to make you happy! Their $1 coffee is a super deal and they always have some tasty baked goods to go with it. It's a great spot for having odd things--I needed Zippo lighter fluid and asked just on the off-chance--and they had it! Fabulous gift items too. Shop here, you will be happy you did. read more

I've been here a few times when visiting Ann Arbor. Usually I just look or see what my hosts are buying. I have always been impressed with the quality and selection of the stock which ranges from very practical basics as well as great decor and housewares items. Though I have a great selection of gardening gloves in my own city, I have been looking for years for something I never seem to find, long gauntlet, leather work gloves designed to fit a smaller woman's hand. And right here, I found them. If I lived here, I would shop here frequently. Even visiting, I expect to find things like these gloves to take home with me. The staff was very friendly and it was quite busy on a Saturday morning and they even had a pickle tasting in progress. read more

We bought a fiddle leaf fig from here at the beginning of August. The staff was super helpful and answered all our questions about the plant. It had a few leaves with brown spots on it so I was a little concerned that it was going to die on us but the woman who worked in the greenhouse area assured me that with proper care and moving the plant to a different pot it would be fine. They even offered to repot it for us on site. In the month that we've had it, it has perked up and even sprouted 2 new leaves due to the great care tips they gave us. read more

Downtown Home and Garden is a staple of downtown Ann Arbor. This where townies go for plant bulbs, home/garden supplies and they are also our local official Big Green Egg dealer. My hubs received a Big Green Egg as a thank you gift from a customer. We had heard of them before but no experience. Now that we have one - OMG they are NEAT! DDHG delivered his Egg and extended the 10% off accessories for a week. We visited a couple days later and stocked up. The BGEs are pricey and the accessories can be too but they last a lifetime. DDHG prices were reasonable and the best value in most cases. We smoked the best beef brisket that weekend. Looking forward to the next recipe. Super nice owners and staff. Easy to drive into the building and park, get what you need without having to lug it back to your parking spot, and go. DDHG stocks a lot of great items that I cannot find anywhere else and all are of good quality. They even offer blade sharpening services. Small selection of Zingerman's bread and pastries available in the case. Great place to grab a few items or look around for inspiration. read more

Pretty good plant selection! I was interested mostly in air purifying plants and was able to find a healthy medium size snake plant and a super tiny and cute spider plant! The coolest part of this place is if you buy a pot and a plant they will replant it for you in the new pot for no extra charge! read more

This is more of a home-and-garden botique than an actual home and garden store. Lots of expensive benches, trellises and decorative things that you can stick in the ground. You can get supplies like soil, pots and bulbs if you want to do some gardening. The indoor area of the shop also has housewares and books about gardening and cooking. I knew I was in the wrong store when I saw the display case with zingerman's pastries. Maybe it's the right store for a lot of people who live close to downtown. I like to think that I'm getting a lot of work done when I do something outdoors, so I want it to involve five or ten yards of mulch, a pickup truck full of pavers, or a dozen bags of concrete. You won't find any of those things here. It's a very precious little store. read more

Unorganized, crabby and pretentious. I was able to get my soil components here and appreciate it. I like to come here to buy my soil ingredients to start my flats because they are kept inside and not full of fungus like big box stores. However....and ESPECIALLY at this time through this pandemic don't be Mean to ME!!! I'm a Nurse in downtown Detroit and have a family farm business on the side for 30 years. I have always looked forward to shopping here to start my growing season. This time they disregarded my order, then after several attempts to contact them they gave me the wrong order and then to top it off were condescending about it!!!! Like I don't know what I need??? Telling me that they would have to charge me more for what I ordered than the 8 bags of Play Sand they loaded up? Duh! If I don't need something that's a 100% price increase . Just let me pay for my 200 dollars worth of dirt and poop and don't give me a hard time!!!!! How nice it would be to have their job! Arrogant comments made throughout the whole painful interaction. I have been shopping at this location since it was Hertler Brothers. Always appreciated the warm "family" atmosphere and conversations with the staff. But unfortunately those days seem past. Nothing makes that so clear as the closing of the restrooms, which have always been accessible. Sure there's the COVID excuse, but other businesses, and all restaurants, have their toilets available to their customers. No, there's definitely an attitude that separates them from us. Prices have also shot up...$80 for a potted gardenia??? I don't think so! They may have a few free parking places and load your vehicle for you, but I can think of several places locally that have huge parking lot and also load your purchases for you. Will hate to lose another shopping option in the area, but the future doesn't look good. read more

I saw a beautiful plant in the store and bought it. The person waiting on me could not remember the name of the plant. I brought the plant home and looked it up and found out it is highly toxic! I have 2 cats, 2 puppies and grandkids at my house and could not take the risk of having a highly toxic plant at my house. I tried to return the plant but DTHG does not accept returns on plants. I explained that the plant was "highly toxic" and could not be at my house. I suggested they should label their plants- especially the highly toxic ones. They said their plants are not for consumption (duh!)- which I found to be a very rude comment. OF COURSE we will not sit down and eat the plants. IF it were to be eaten it would be by a child or an animal by mistake. Take care, DTHG, of your customers - with kindness. And show respect for your clients. If you lose one child to a "highly toxic" plant sold at your business you would regret it. Label your plants! You've just lost this customer and somehow I don't think you care. read more

This is one spot I return to again and again when in need of a special gift. As is mentioned, prices here are slightly higher than your standard garden store, but not by that much -- and the service and selection are great. From bonzai tree to orchids to herb garden starters to seeds, you'll find plenty of intriguing greenery to suit a variety of tastes. The garden/outdoor furniture and decor here all seems high-quality, and you'll find very practical things you may not have seen before either. This last time, I spotted some very simple, colorful solar-charged lanterns. There is also a small selection of cards/stationary -- some cool letterpress items (though I always wish there were a few more cards). The home side also has plenty of gadgets and cooking-related items for the avid cook or baker -- and there's also a small bread/bakery counter with Zingerman's goods. For friends who love gardening or are in nesting mode, or for parents or relatives who just appreciate unique gifts, this is a worthwhile stop. Some days, they even fire up the big green egg smoker (new ones also for sale) and you can smell roasting meat for blocks! read more

Really taken by their 'home' half, not quite won over by their garden half (yet). Their 'home' half is this store's greatest asset. Whenever I have a new cooking or baking project, I come here. Everywhere else in Ann Arbor fails me but Home&Garden comes through with top-quality, specialized kitchenware. There are meat grinders, real cookie sheets, cooking utensils, etc. Every time the store has everything and exactly what I need. Most kitchen appliances are manual, i.e. not electric. Rustic cooking and baking is where this store is at. And I like it! Speaking of going back in time, they have a surprisingly good little collection of retro (1920s-1960s) hats. It's completely odd and unexpected. But there it is. There are also wooden children's games, boots, pastries, Polish pottery, greeting cards (with birds on them), and so much more. I mean, they even have corks, for goodness sakes. Just corks. Hanging out. Three sizes. Just in case. I stocked up on gourmet vegetable seeds for the spring and the salesperson was willing to help a helpless n00b like myself (yea, I killed all my seedlings last year without even knowing how it happened). I'm ready for some sweet, spicy, crunchy, and bitter veggies this year! I will succeed - and they will survive. So, their garden side... Not as impressed with it thus far. I bought a bunch of indoor plants here in the summer and found them at home depot for half the price. But I also found some gems that I couldn't find anywhere else. But they do have the best potting soil for the best price I've found anywhere 'round town. Of course, the star of the shop is Louis, the orange tabby cat that reigns supreme. If you are out late at Old Town or the diner, you'll see the little man on the prowl after hours. Otherwise he'll be there when you least expect him, under a chair or sitting in front of the checkout counter. The selection of home goods is limited but of high quality. Good selection of seeds and big healthy bulbs. Some overpriced plants. Not sure about the soil, yet. Definitely worth a stop in to explore, though. The book's contents are different from its cover and you're sure to discover something you never thought you'd find here. read more

Seeds, deck furniture, cast iron pans, mason jars, tomato starts, potting soil, Filson vests, and a cup of coffee to sip while you shop. Stellar. The drive-through is shaded, which is a huge win during hot summer dirt pickups. Bike parking is a little spotty but not usually full; I usually pick up birdseed and other medium-sized things that way. One recurring problem: The bulk-dirt-and-seed guys occasionally try to railroad you into certain purchases --- on my last visit to buy topsoil, I had a 5-minute fight with the guy who really, really thought I should buy pearlite and peat instead. Those are fine things, but not what I asked for; just sell me the topsoil, please. It's great to have a place like this in the middle of town; I really don't want to have to organize a car and drive out on Jackson Road just to get some birdseed and potting soil. And I like browsing the Le Creuset while I pay. read more

I like to go and check the plants collections every couple of weeks. Parking: Parking is actually easy considering they r located in the downtown of Ann arbor. They have a few parking spots and u can even park inside. Other than plants and gardening things they are super expensive. Plants: I bought 5 indoor mini plants and they all survive and grown well, but the 2 succulents I bough did die on me. Price: u would be surprise that their plant prices are reasonable. Even the pots medium size plastic pots with plenty of holes is 0.65 - 2 $. Painted clay pots are also Are nice and have good prices as well. read more

This place is great! Attentive service and well curated inventory! One experience: I bought a Filson baseball cap. The stitching on body the started fraying after about 90 days, which was unusual for this durable brand. Took hat back, told a sales person my story and received a replacement in less than 10 minutes. How great is that?!!! Great place! read more

We drove all the way just to pick up a German spaetzle press. The original one by Kull is hard to find for a good price and here they were. We emailed them ahead of time and they kindly placed it aside for us. They are a very busy store specializing in gardening supplies but with a nice selection of European housewares. Excellent place to browse on the weekend. Staff are busy but very courteous. read more

We just moved to AA and needed (well, wanted) to purchase some outdoor furniture. Both of the sales people that helped us were very helpful, without any hard sells. They had a good selection at different price points and we ended up purchasing a french set and two adirondack chairs w/foot rest. What really pushed our experience from a 4 to 5 star was that they assembled and delivered the items that same day at no extra charge, which we really appreciated it. The self-conscious heir of a historic farmers' supply store (think feed and fertilizer?), this is one of many Ann Arbor institutions. Teak garden furniture, reproductions of the warriors of Xian, China, for garden decoration; cast iron cooking pots, imaginative utensils, imported ceramic serving bowls and mixing bowls, supplies for home canning, garden tools, gloves and hats; serious gardening supplies -- a miscellany for the home and garden, as it says. The spacious old drive-through barnline structure remains in use for weekend garden improvers loading their SUVs (or whatever they are going to drive next). Expensive! read more

The garden equipment includes both classic and very uptodate items. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The store has special jam tasting, tomato tasting, pickle tasting events, as well as special holiday occasions. This place is a family favorite. We love to visit Lewis the cat, and it's a favorite place to buy gifts. Love their home goods! And, if you want to feed the birds, this is the place to get seed. They are super helpful, and helped my girls pick out all the right gear to attract their favorite birds. Their garden selection is a little pricey but high on style and well worth it. read more

This is such a nice Ann Arbor store. They have a big warehouse full of most of the garden supplies you may need. This includes a large collection of pretty pots, garden decorations, soils, fertilizers, etc. I love that they have so many organic options for fertilizers and pesticides. There are also many types of bird feeders and seed. Buy those birdseeds in bulk for a better deal. The inside store has even more gardening supplies, cooking supplies, hats, rugs, even Zingerman's baked goods. The "day old" Zingerman's stuff is discounted, even better! Who would mind eating a 1 day old pastry? The staff are all very friendly and helpful. If they don't know the answer to your question, they'll find another staff member who does. They definitely know their stuff when it comes to gardening, I learn a little something new each time I talk with them. Lastly, they have a big orange cat who lives in the store. He's very cute, and he must be a sweet cat because he tolerates all the kids well. read more

Was hoping for a larger house plant selection, but I showed up the week after the holidays and it was a bit bare. The woman in charge of the plants was very nice though, even gave me a fern and said "if you can nurse it back to health, go for it!". Pickup up a small succulent as well. There were no goats when I was there, but again, after Christmas. Next time I visit Ann Arbor, I will be back. read more

I bounce between Chicago and New York, and always make a point to stop by this shop. Between the fun greenhouse, stuff for your house, your dog, and the clothing - there's not a thing in here that isn't needed on a daily basis. I missed the pansies that were due in, but kinda hard to get those on a plane. The staff are tops, and the owner is always around (and actually works with customers.) Oh ... don't forget the shop cat. I'm use to bodega cats in NY, and it's always fun to be in a shop that employs one. read more

5 stars for the excellent customer service in the garden department (and free parking)! After leaving another nursery that was unable to help me, I brought in my houseplant that was starting to develop brown, fungal-looking spots for some help. James was quick to greet and assist in identifying the culprit (rust fungi), finding the appropriate fungicide, and repotting my plant for FREE! They have a wide selection of pots, including self-watering, that are reasonably priced. The greenhouse-looking store and warehouse are filled with tons of unique home and garden goods. I've shopped here for many years. When Mark ran the place it was good, but the current management is rude, to say the least. I attempted to return a pair of gloves that failed after a month of casual wear, and they refused. Then the nasty woman followed me out to make sure I wasn't stealing anything and hiding it in my car! I know I've spent thousand of dollars here in the past, and the men outside know me and are kind. But today was the last straw. I will never return. These people deserve to fail and they will. read more

If you happen to have a 5 acre lot you need landscaping for, this isn't the store for you. If you have a typical city lot, and want to make it beautiful, this is your place. Yes, they have Zingerman's bread and great coffee, but I've never bought that here. I've bought bales of straw, bags of organic fertilizer, houseplants, garden transplants, stakes, seeds, tools, bird feeders, etc. I've also bought Wusthof knives, Kyocera laser-sharpened ceramic knives, leather gloves, gardening books, maple taps, Muck boots, etc. They just got in their selection of spring seed potatoes, and they have ten varieties, along with three varieties of soft-neck garlic, shallots, onion sets, asparagus crowns, rhubarb crowns, etc. I shopped here when it was still Hertler Bros. and I remember being concerned that Mark was taking over. I think he's done a great job. If you need something for your home and garden, and would prefer things that are safe for your kids, pets, and neighbors, you should give Downtown Home and Garden a try.
