I've taken two cooking classes here both with Chef Gabriella. She is awesome. A classically trained chef who knows what she's doing. The first cooking class was Latin steak night where we made steak with chimichurri and gelato for dessert. The second cooking class was crabcake with steak and garlic aïoli with oven roasted asparagus and chocolate lava cake. It was such a delicious meal. And she is a fantastic instructor. I've signed up for my third class and can hardly wait. As for the store itself, the staff are really nice. I've purchased a number of items here. If you take a cooking class you also get 10% off in the store which I took advantage of. They have a beautiful selection of just about everything you would ever need for your kitchen and serving goods. What's not to like about that? read more

My friend and I took a New England Coastal Classics cooking class. The website said we would be making: Classic Connecticut Style Lobster Roll Butter Lettuce Salad with Radishes, Cucumbers & herbs Buttermilk-Herb Dressing Sea Salt and Vinegar Smashed Potatoes Crustless Blueberry Pie Homemade Brioche Roll Raspberry Lime Rickey I was so excited to prep and cook all of these items! The room for the class isn't very big. The class consisted of 3 tables of 8. Twenty-four people per class is too big. It felt too cozy. I've taken a Sur La Table class before but it's been awhile. I remember it being more hands-on. In this class, we barely did anything. The lobster was cooked and cut for us. We cut some herbs and mixed the dressing. Not very exciting. The potatoes were pre-cooked and one person from each table got to smash them. We were given all the ingredients for the pie and we threw it all together and into a pan. The dough for the roll was premade for us. We each took a piece and rolled it into the shape of a roll. The Rickey was made for us. I wouldn't take another class. read more

A girlfriend of mine had talked about doing a cooking class up in Ann Arbor and a couple of us had to join! We were welcomed by the staff and invited to shop around while they prepared the kitchen area for us. We walked around in the shop area that offered many different cooking essentials and nice luxurious items too. They had flavored water for all who shopped and looked to be an espresso machine that was an option for us to try, but wasn't working at the time. We started the class and Chef Gabbi was a delight. She took to time to explain everything to us and even some great tips we can try for other dishes. She was quite amazing and kind. I had a really great time at their Saturday night cooking class which started at 7:30. This was supposed to be a French date night which consisted of making French chicken and French pastries. Wendy was our instructor and she taught the class. I will say that she's very patient and kind. The only feedback I could offer to her is to allow more of us to do more hands-on stuff in the beginning of the class. I do understand that she's teaching us how to use the instruments in the kitchen, but the point of the classes is to be interactive, and many of us spent 30 minutes in being in the class just watching which was essentially a waste of time because my philosophy is that you should be doing instead of watching. Now in terms of the chicken, the cooking process was long. It took around 1 1/2 hours to make the dinner which was all right, but most of us were hungry by the end. I will say the class was worth it for the French pastry. We made profiteroles which was super fun and a lot of us really loved it. The dinner was not very filling though and the class did not have enough chairs for us to sit down when we were going to eat our food. Many of the participants in the class were elderly in this required them to be standing up for 3 to 4 hours, which was very intense even for me. All in all, it's a very good concept, but I will say that they need to be more prepared to handle a large class volume, and they need to allow us to do more hands-on stuff instead of us watching, especially since we're paying money to learn how to cook! read more

We had our first cooking class experience and had a memorable time. We were welcomed with a coffee by the retail staff that were friendly and assisted during our shopping experience by answering questions on various products. Chef Wendy and James provided an educational experience on new recipe and cooking techniques while also highlighting on cool new products we purchased. In the class I was signed up for (which was a gift with my daughter-in-law who took the class with me), the menu we purchased was NOT the menu. Crepes are not Vietnamese spring rolls. Pretty big difference. The chef told us that "corporate" has been told multiple times to make the website reflect what they are ACTUALLY going to make but refuse to make the corrections. We were told we couldn't take any food home with us, though there were many leftovers (only 3 people in the class). I was not alone in my surprise that the store policies meant that staff got to enjoy our food instead of me enjoying it for dinner (unless it went in the trash which is unconscionable). Date night experience! I went to the Ann Arbor location because the one on Troy is always booked up. I really enjoyed the experience here. Kudos to Chef Gabby from Venezuela. We cooked a Steak dinner with a side salad and oven roasted potatoes. (I've made the same salad at home a few times)... the session is about 2hrs. There wasn't many people the night we went. My only critique is for the price of the class, I was alittle upset that 2 couples had to share a steak and sides. We literally left there and had dinner because the portion was so small. I went to one of their macarons baking classes in Ann Arbor Michigan and the chef told us we were only gonna end up with 4 macarons each even though a previous chef at the same location would send students home with 25 macarons each. In my case the batter was very runny and she didn't want to let me make a new one. She didn't add enough almond flour in the beginning I poured the macarons on the tray and because the batter was so soft those were no longer circles, just soggy batter all over the tray. I called customer service to tell them I wad leaving and I also asked for a refund. This was week ago. I sent them several emails and called them. Nothing. Any advice? The rating is not even one star. It should be zero. They basically stole my money. read more

Do not take the classes here. I was very disappointed in the class on dimsum dishes. The only qualifications that the instructor had to make Asian food was that they worked at PF Changs and were " familiar with Asian flavors because they worked alongside a lot of Asians". The instructor seemed to just read from the recipe and the food turned out poorly with the pork buns being extremely undercooked. If you don't have someone that can authentically teach a class on a food, you shouldn't offer a class on that food. read more

A friend and I signed up for the 'Perfect Patio Dinner' class, led by Aeisha. She was an excellent instructor. I'm a long time cook and finally learned how to make a great risotto and grill salmon. Her enthusiasm was contagious and her ability to communicate techniques and 'the why' behind them was very helpful. We left the class eager to sign up for more of her classes. absolutely terrible. I booked this class for my daughter's 16th birthday I was called to be informed that they did not have an instructor and that the be canceled and there was no rescheduling. I also was told that I would receive a refund in 5 to 7 business days. It's been well over two weeks. no refund. I call up to talk to somebody the customer service representative basically was just trying to get me off the phone with no resolution. Today I was reminded why I don't shop in stores much anymore. I came in to do a simple gift exchange and brought my items to the register. An older man and woman were walking around the store, both employees, and I even called out to get their attention but I guess neither heard me. I waited 5-10 minutes in total for someone to notice me. Eventually the woman came over to help me but kept asking me simple questions like where my receipt was (I had put it on top of the items I was returning), what I was buying (in a pile next to the items I was returning), and telling me it would go back onto the original payment method (no, because it was a gift). It was like she had literally never rung someone up before in her life, and she was not being very polite about it. Eventually the manager Jenna comes over, realizes the woman has no clue what she's doing, but rather than taking over and doing it faster so I can go on my merry way, she uses it as a learning moment. So I stand there for another 10 minutes or so waiting for the original woman to learn how to process a refund. Finally, two of my returned items I guess had been bought as a buy 2 get 1 free purchase, and technically one of them had been the "free" one, so it had no value so I therefore could not return it. I asked Jenna to make an exception to this policy now that my simple trip to the store had become a 30 minute ordeal but she refused. read more

Received a gift card for my birthday, which I used towards 4 spots in a cooking class. Two people had to request work off to attend. The class was canceled, but they didn't alert me (the person who booked & paid for the class) they called one of the other guests on the reservation. Stated we would receive a refund to our original payment. I called back & told them I partially paid with a credit card and $200 from a gift card. I was advised they would refund the amount paid with CC & would receive an email with $200 gift card. Never received the gift card. When I called the store I was told they have to cancel classes "way too often" due to lack of staff.... Maybe work out the kinks of the cancellation process since this happens "way too often". We went to the gnocci cooking class and learned how to make 3 different types of gnocci & sauces. All were delicious! Our teacher was helpful and knowledgeable. The only disappointment was that the class was pretty pricey and we couldn't take any of the food home. The staff here need some training on customer service. I went to the store for a couple particular items and also to look around. I walked through the entire store without anyone acknowledging me. No hello or can I help you. But the other customers were approached. As a matter of fact, a staff member asked two women that were standing 5 feet from me, if they needed help but he walked right passed me without saying a word. It was not horribly busy, it was noon on a Thursday. If I didn't need the items I came here for, I would have happily walked out without purchasing anything. You don't deserve my money. read more

Came here for the first time with my sils to take the "A Taste of India" cooking class. We were split up into groups of 4 to cook the different dishes together. Although the class was 2hrs long, it felt much shorter than that because it was so fast paced. I wish that we had a little more time so that we could actually make each of the dishes in our groups. The instructor made the ginger ice cream and the basmati rice while we made the butter chicken, saag paneer and curry cauliflower/sweet potatoes in our groups. All of the food turned out delicious and they also had pea and potato samosas as snacks when we first arrived (i would have loved to get the recipe for the samosas but that wasn't included). I'd like to add that while this class states we'll be having a "tasting" at the end and quite a few reviews i read say that you get small sample-sized portions, we actually made quite a bit of food today. Enough where each group had leftovers from their dishes afterwards. One thing that I didn't like was that we were told we weren't allowed to take any of our leftovers home, the instructors collected the leftovers from each group and put them into containers- not sure what they were planning to do with them as i am not a fan of letting food go to waste, but it would have been nice to take some of what we had leftover home. Overall, I thought it was a fun experience and I also enjoyed seeing all of the neat kitchen supplies in the store. read more

I am no "Master Chef" nor wannabe (Bobby Flay would kick my sorry backside to Pluto) but I am always trying to improve my cooking technique. I have taken several cooking classes at this location. Every class has been a delight; the students use nice equipment and I got some good ideas on what to buy for my kitchen. I have enjoyed learning how to cook different types of ethnic cuisines. I particularly recommend the knife technique class. Not only did they teach me a way of NOT cutting off my finger (as well as other valuable appendeges) but how to use the knife more efficiently. Most people just grab a knife and start hacking away but proper knife selection and technique are often misunderstood. You would be shocked at what people will use to cut their food. One student instinctively grabbed a bread knife to cut vegetables (WTF?) until the instuctor showed him the error of his ways! Okay, now I know where the Costco sampling moochers go when they are not blocking the aisles! They take a cooking class at Sur la Table! When the class makes food when learning, there is enough for everyone to have a *taste* (appetizer portion). Apparently some people expect to be fed whole dinners! Damn! Leave a few crumbs for the rest of us! I nearly fell over when a student asked where the dinner dining room was located! SMH... If you want a full meal, dine at Bigalora next door or Zola Bistro across the lot; both are excellent although I always forget to check-in as I am constantly hangry. Take the class handout with recipies home and make your meal there! Class is not "feeding time at the trough"! This one class member probaby did not appreciate me calling out "soo wee" as she was trying to stuff her face with most of the food the class made! Instructors are knowledgeable, patient (especially when dealing with Wolfgang Puck wannabes), and speak clearly. They created a positive attitude of experimentation, fun, and cooperation (I am on the fence regarding dealing with these food-hogging Costco moochers but I'll try to take the high road). Took the Rustic Bread Making class here on a Saturday morning with some friends. We were greeted with coffee and cappuccino as soon as we got here. Hit the spot at 9am. There were some late stragglers so we got started a bit late (more time to drink my coffee). :) Aprons, recipes everything else you needed were provided. We broke into two groups and got to work. Everything was prepped, premeasured and washed up after for you making this an easy class. The whole experience reminded me of baking with my mom as a kid, when my siblings and I took turns pouring into the bowl. The final product could be tasted and brought home after by all in the class. IMO, This class was more of a show than an actual cooking class and that's ok. $59 for a three hour class and 10% discount on any purchase you make that day was a deal. . read more

Kitchen stores get me excited. All those pots, pans, gadgets, mixes, etc. Admittedly my favorite shop for this in the area is William Sonoma but I do love me some Sur La Table and was pretty psyched to have one open in Ann Arbor. This shop is roomy and since it's new very clean. The prices are fairly reasonable, considering the quality of the goods they carry. I've never been disappointed with anything I've purchased there. They don't carry as many foodstuffs as William Sonoma but you can get some extracts, baking decorations, salts and such. My favorite part is that they offer cooking classes--girls nights out, date nights, or basic cooking/baking on a theme. I haven't done a class yet but it's been on my list try try. Sushi workshops, tapas, surf and turf, french pastry, they offer it all! And for less than a baking class would be at Zingerman's. I will agree with other reviewers that the staff here is a little less than attentive. Evening opening day when they should have been at their most welcoming I was put off by the woman ringing me up (I don't remember the specifics now but I remember leaving feeling disappointed in the interaction). However, that's not enough to keep me from shopping here when I'm in the area. Or for signing up a class when the opportunity presents itself. read more

As I expected - I am hooked. I avoided this store for fear of becoming obsessed, but after finding that this is the only store in the area to carry Sugarfina candies, I had to pop in. Easy to find, easy to park. Great selection of home goods, with a focus on kitchen and entertaining, arranged by type (grilling, baking, seasonal, etc) They only had two types of the Sugarfina candies, and one size, for $1 more than what you can order for online, from Sugarfina directly. Which makes me wonder how comparable are the prices. I definitely return once our kitchen remodel is finished - for inspiration and special pieces. read more

A friend and I took the "Date Night: A Taste of Italy" cooking class where we prepared a 3-course dinner including zabaglione. Joseph did a wonderful job of demonstrating the steps and skills of preparation and preparing the recipes. He also demonstrated several small but useful tools that we then had a chance to try for ourselves as we worked. After his demonstration, we worked in pairs preparing the food which was prepped and ready [Thank you Anne and Karen!] so that we could devote our time to actually preparing the food. It was a fun experience and I learned a lot but more importantly, it inspired me to begin cooking again after a long pause. We completed the class by eating the food we prepared which was delicious. I did a cooking class here on my b-day. I tried the dessert class. It was a lot of fun and interactive. I really want to come back but I know the classes are overall pretty pricey. It makes sense though because they are supplying the food items for you to be able to try. My only negative feedback about the class would be that they tried to make too many items to the point where we could not try the pie that we made. I was heartbroken. I will definitely plan on coming back for a class. It was worthwhile overall! and the store has a lot of neat items that you won't find anywhere else. read more

I literally heard singing the first time I entered this store. I was like a kid in a candy store! Every single kitchen item you think you could ever want or need and even ones you didn't even know existed and that you needed until you look around this store, you can find here. They have a really nice variety and selection of hard to find and unique kitchen supplies, utensils, and tools. I stumbled upon the store by accident actually. It's in the same complex as the North Face store as I was leaving, I was intrigued by the sign outside. I made my way in and felt like I have found a little gem. It was awesome! I was promptly greeted at the door and asked if I was looking for anything in particular. I wasn't so I just looked around in awe. I saw things I had even heard of or tried: black truffle salt (which is amazing by the way), an egg separator, vanilla bean paste, a silicone oven mitt, a utensil crock, Scanpans, Silpat mats, and the list goes on and on. My first time in the store, I bought a bacon chocolate pancake mix and I knew I was hooked from then on. Some of the items can be a bit pricey but you can tell the items and good quality and will last you quite some time. Sometimes, they have sales as well so you may be able to find some really quality items for a pretty good prices. I've also had to return items and it's a pretty seamless process. Their website makes it easy to order things as well and may have more options online (Kitchen Aide stand mixers in pretty colors). The staff is pretty helpful as well, going out of their way to look up things on the computers or getting a ladder to reach high-sitting items. They are pretty knowledgeable about the products and will give you hints for how to care for your items which is helpful. I've bought several items from here. Some of my favorites include a beer making kit (for a friend who was very appreciative), red Kitchen Aide stand mixer, pasta machine, handheld lemon juicer, Popsicle maker, egg separator (priceless), variety of specialty salts (love them), and stainless steel OXO containers. If you've never been, I definitely recommend going in and just taking a look around. I promise you, you'll find something you want to walk out with. We all drove in to Ann Arbor from Grand Rapids and Battle Creek, only to find out the class had been cancelled. No phone call, no email, no refund (as of this writing) and hours of wasted time. Sur La Table has a wide variety of cooking goods and cooking classes. I thought the shopping aspect was fun, I love seeing the different supplies they had and I thought that was cool. However, I am reviewing them based off their cooking class. I think they changed their prices because when I took one it was $89 a person. I went for a date night idea and it was honestly the biggest waste of money I have ever spent. Almost $200 for two people, 3 hours, 3 bites of mediocre at best food, and minimal cooking. The group was fairly large for date night so we all were in charge of creating one family style dish to share. My boyfriend and I switched on who would cut a vegetable and then we waited. There was a lot of waiting. In your small groups you would take turns stirring and simmering. It was all ridiculously slow and all we did was wait around. I was not a fan of the "cooking class" at all and it was easily the biggest waste of money I have ever spent. read more

We attended a few of the cooking classes and had a lot of fun. The choices of classes are really interesting, there's some basics but you can also pick something adventurous. The ingredients and equipment you get to use are really great quality. You do get paired into groups, that can lead to some down time, but you get to see a lot in a short amount of time which is great. My husband and I took the Beef Wellington class at the Ann Arbor site. It was our second class there. The cooking techniques were great. The quality of the beef was was not as good as we expected. It was an expensive class. The other disappointment is there were not enough stools for everyone in the class, for the price of the class there should at least be enough stools for the whole class to sit at the table. There were chairs that didn't reach the prep table. The teachers are good. It's a fun couple date. read more

All the posts stating that the customer service here is rude, are accurate. I end up shopping here a lot because we a frequent diners at the Zola Bistro restaurant, in the same complex. Every time we go in, we are never greeted. We wander around browsing and no one approaches us to ask if we need help. There have been multiple times that we have waited and waited at the register to pay and even walked around trying to find someone to ring us up but, to no avail. I have even just left my items on the counter and walked out because, I was so frustrated that I couldn't find anyone to pay. The staff are not well trained in how to interact with customers. They are often curt or tell us that they don't have an item in store that I found on their website but, then as we walk around we find the item in question. There was also one instance in which I needed to return an item that I purchased online. I set it on the counter (it was heavy) and started to browse because, there was a long line. The woman at the counter yelled across the store at me that, "I don't know what you think you are doing, but, we don't even sell this here!" It was so embarrassing. I explained to her that I purchased it from their website and she started arguing with me that I couldn't have because they don't sell it (so arrogantly). I pulled out the receipt and showed her. That shut her up but, she never apologized for her rude behavior. WTH! read more

I drove down from Brighton to purchase a few items I had seen on their website. The Twelve Oaks store I frequented recently closed. This store is just brimming with everything imaginable for those who love to cook or entertain. My purpose in writing this review, though, is to acknowledge Dori, an associate, who was beyond helpful and so very personable. I have been to this location three times, and each time it was a nice experience. Unlike some of the other Yelpers who have reviewed so far, I prefer not to be smothered with attention. That said, each time I have come in, at least one employee has pleasantly asked me if there is anything that they could help me with. Also, I'd say that I've never seen less than four staff on the floor at any given time. That someone has had trouble finding help here is just strange. I do believe that many businesses in Ann Arbor suffer from poor customer service, but I don't think that this is one of those businesses. My five star rating is based on the helpful interactions that I have had with employees, the range of products that they offer, and an exchange that they did for me. I was given a kitchen accessory for Christmas, and I... goofed one of the accessories up a bit. Sur La Table replaced the piece for me, and were very nice about it. With a fun array of products, good customer service, and community cooking classes- what more could you ask for? read more

The staff here are extremely friendly and kind. They all ask if I want coffee or a shot of expresso when I walk in. They often have a sample of something yummy at the front counter. The staff will help as much or as little as I need. they are always bubbly, polite and kind. Its just a really little neat place. It feels like a big store but a family run business. I was just attacked by a man in the parking lot in front of Sur La Table. I just dropped someone off and I was pulling away from the building and a man walked up along the driver's side of my vehicle and then jumped out in front of me. He began pounding on the hood of my car and started shouting obscenities at me. I exited my vehicle to confront him and pulled a knife of me! Then the owner came out and started yelling at me. WTH? Didn't he see that a man was threatening me with a knife? He'll be hearing from the authorities and my attorney tomorrow. read more

Went to Italian couples night. $79 per person. Class started 15 minutes late. Eight in class, they paired us into 2 team, which ment 3 watching while one performed cooking task. The Caesar salad dressing was a disaster the meatballs and ice cream were very good. They only served 2/3 of the food that we prepared and kept the test for themselves. I felt like I paid $160 to cook the chef dinner to take home. No worth the price. Would not recommend read more
