The service from Jeff was top notch and he was the one making the food,waiting on everyone in the place and he answered all the my questions and had all the answers for. My husband and friends come up to the Dells area every February and will be visiting here every year now when we come. The burgers were so good and not frozen. Great overall experience! Came here for an early dinner before an appointment. The Downtowner is a classic Wisconsin Bar. No pretensions, friendly staff and good food. It was early so I was the only one in the bar - but only for a few minutes. I ordered the special which was a pepper jack bacon burger with special sauce and a side of fries. Burger was cooked medium as ordered - it was juicy, bacon crispy and all around very good fries were thin crinkle fries - hot and crispy. The staff was nice and I didn't feel like an outsider since this was my first time visiting- will definitely be back. read more

Dropped in for dinner based on Yelp review. Had bacon cheeseburger. Made by the bartender, one of the nicest and most solicitous people in the business. He was so terrific we thought he was the owner! Turned out not to be the case. "Just the bartender." he modestly laughed. He whipped us up a couple of bacon cheeseburgers with grilled onions that I thought were spectacular. One of THE BEST! In memory! I offered him my wife as a tip. He took one look at her and said 20% would be more than enough. (Just kidding. I'm not married. I was there with a buddy. But, if I was married and there with her...the burger was that good! I have been semi regular for 3 plus years, The food is awesome, but the service is not, It feels like i am inconveniencing the staff, It used to be good service , but i have watched the decline recently including the manager and assistant manager, and many of the bartenders. Sabrina the bartender is awesome, a real sweetheart. On the other hand, Mike one of the managers was a complete drunken a-hole. Asked us where we're from and when we said Illinois, he called us Fucking Illinois Bastards. ( FIB's) Made me want to jump over the bar, didn't care about me but he insulted my wife. Great Philly sandwich. Very locals bar. Drank a Baraboo salad, an Old Style with a pickle in a mug.

While in the dells I was told that Munks is the place to try for a burger but I wanted to veer off the beaten path. I don't mind the popular hot spots but I like to getting into the neighborhood places that the locals go to. While in the dells I was looking for something away from the tourist traps and found this place. This is your typical Wi dive bar with the boring draft beers and nothing exotic in the coolers but Jamison was on the shelf. I Posted pictures. I wanted a couple drinks and a burger and to relax at a local hang out. I asked if I could get a rare cheese burger and the bar tender said yes. I order the bacon cheese burger rare. When it was done I noticed that it looked very fresh and I could see that the juices had dripped on the wax paper. Frozen patties don't do that so I was intrigued about my burger. The burger had a nice toasted bun, beef patty, two slices of cheese and two sliced of bacon. When I took the first bite I noticed juicy beef, crisp bacon just off the grill and cheese on that toasted bun cooked rare. This was a great fresh cooked cheese burger and in my top 3 or 4. This was a dam good cheese burger this place puts out. When I was done I asked if that was a frozen patty and about the good bacon and I was told that it's fresh beef and the bacon is cooked with the patty for my order. Bottom line is that this place has one fantastic bacon cheese burger and I wish it was in my neighborhood, job well done. read more

Out of towners, beware! While this might a great place for locals, they showed no interest in us. They refused twice to make the drink I ordered because they didn't want to take the time, then served me something else I hadn't ordered because it was easier for them. Then they lied about what food was available, evidently so they could save it for regular customers who came in after us. read more

My wife and I needed a little freedom from the quarantine, so when saw that Baraboo was opening up for business we got up here as fast as we could. Needing a cool refreshment after scouting the local shops, we were so happy to stumble on Downtowner. We were immediately greeted by the friendly bartenders who were happy to share a laugh and provide recommendations on things to do in area. So good the burgers here were fantastic. My husband had the garlic burger and he absolutely loved it. I had my regular bacon cheeseburger with pepper jack and it was yummy. I always forget to take photos because they're so good - I want to eat them right away. We had chippers and beer fries and they were also very good can't wait to come back again. I judge any bar/grill by its burger. I'm happy to find the Downtowner's burger to be one of if not the best burger I've tasted in the Baraboo area. The burger is 1/3lb of ground chuck from the local meat market. It was lean without being dried out, not greasy. A key feature is the grilled bun! Only way for a bun to hold up to that big a patty. It keeps the bun from disintegrating while one eats. Additionally, the burger was reasonably priced! The service is very friendly and prompt. We'll be back here again soon. read more

On our way home from a Memorial Day weekend, we decided to stop in for an early lunch. We were excited to see that they opened at 10 and served food, most places didn't open till 11a. We parked and walked over, only to see that they had a 'closed' sign in the window. Luckily a couple of guys from the tattoo shop were outside and told us to try the door - YUP, it was open! The bartender joked that that's what happens when "a couple of old guys run the place". We were informed they didn't start serving food till 11a so we decided to have a couple of drinks. We were really itching to get food as we'd been camping for 4 days so when 11a came and went and no one was there to cook we thought about leaving. Just as we were going to ask for our tab, the bartender handed us menus and the woman who was cooking walked in. She was quick to grab our orders and get started. We were glad we waited, the burgers were large, fresh and had great toppings. I was missing my 1000 island dressing with the German burger but mustard did just fine with it. We opted for sweet potato fries as the side, so good! Overall it's a spacious dive bar with friendly service and good food. Couple of dart boards and enough TVs. I'm sure we'll stop again if we're coming through Baraboo. read more

Our burgers were a bit overdone, but had good flavor. My dining partner really enjoyed the philly sandwich. Don't bother with onion rings. Tater rounds and fries were as to be expected. Unbelievable Burger - fresh ground beef from a local butcher shop (you know what that means ... trimmings from all the good stuff that the butchers have worked on all day long) plus a bakery fresh bun from the bakery down the street.
