Pepper jack bacon burger with fries
    Mary K.

Came here for an early dinner before an appointment. The Downtowner is a classic Wisconsin Bar. No pretensions, friendly staff and good food. It was early so I was the only one in the bar - but only for a few minutes. I ordered the special which was a pepper jack bacon burger with special sauce and a side of fries. Burger was cooked medium as ordered - it was juicy, bacon crispy and all around very good fries were thin crinkle fries - hot and crispy. The staff was nice and I didn't feel like an outsider since this was my first time visiting- will definitely be back.

Downtowner Bar and Grill was great! The food was fantastic and the staff was friendly. I would like to make the bar a regular stop when we are in Wisconsin.

While in the dells I was told that Munks is the place to try for a burger but I wanted to veer off the beaten path. I don't mind the popular hot spots but I like to getting into the neighborhood places that the locals go to. While in the dells I was looking for something away from the tourist traps and found this place. This is your typical Wi dive bar with the boring draft beers and nothing exotic in the coolers but Jamison was on the shelf. I Posted pictures. I wanted a couple drinks and a burger and to relax at a local hang out. I asked if I could get a rare cheese burger and the bar tender said yes. I order the bacon cheese burger rare. When it was done I noticed that it looked very fresh and I could see that the juices had dripped on the wax paper. Frozen patties don't do that so I was intrigued about my burger. The burger had a nice toasted bun, beef patty, two slices of cheese and two sliced of bacon. When I took the first bite I noticed juicy beef, crisp bacon just off the grill and cheese on that toasted bun cooked rare. This was a great fresh cooked cheese burger and in my top 3 or 4. This was a dam good cheese burger this place puts out. When I was done I asked if that was a frozen patty and about the good bacon and I was told that it's fresh beef and the bacon is cooked with the patty for my order. Bottom line is that this place has one fantastic bacon cheese burger and I wish it was in my neighborhood, job well done.

I love the Downtowner! Their burgers are so good, and I always get the deep fried broccoli bites. You can't beat the inexpensive, frosty mugs of tap beer. Make sure you do the shake of the day!

What a great joint! Great service from bartender and manager and the BEST BURGER my dad and I have had!

Great Philly sandwich. Very locals bar. Drank a Baraboo salad, an Old Style with a pickle in a mug.

I'm not sure when this place was built, but everything felt clean & new and the seating was very comfortable. The menu had a nice variety of entrees, but we were definitely disappointed that they don't offer an appetizer selection for lunch. My husband ordered the jalapeño chicken flatbread and I went with the roasted vegetable risotto with grilled chicken. We both really enjoyed our dishes and did share so we didn't have food envy. It was really kind of them to offer us a complimentary dessert when they found out today was our 25th wedding anniversary; we selected the bread pudding and it was delicious!! Other than not having apps available on the lunch menu, our only other gripe was that it took forever to get our bill and pay.

Got a 16 in with pizza and black olives for four adults. The crust is really quite thick... more so than what I'd call NY style. Not a complaint! We just got so much pizza for the money! Sauce was very tomato-y. Not too much on the pie. A generous amount that stays under the perfectly baked cheese. Sausage was top notch. But from the moment we sat down, it was all uphill from there. The Italian wedding soup was excellent, rich, flavorful, and clearly homemade. The pizza was decent, nothing extraordinary but solid with plenty of cheese. We also ordered the lasagna, the spicy chicken dish, and spaghetti and meatballs. The standout was the spicy chicken: the "spicy red sauce" turned out to be more of a creamy, spicy blend, and it was fantastic. Everything came out piping hot, which I really appreciated. They also bring out warm rolls, and those were surprisingly tasty, soft, fresh, and perfect for dipping. Overall, I highly recommend this place. Despite the rough first impression, it turned out to be one of the best restaurants in the area.

It was not busy when we arrived for an early dinner, and most of the staff congregated in and around a booth under a TV. You want a refill, more napkins, some parm & red pepper flakes for your pizza, or for dishes to be cleared away? Just look towards that TV and pray your server emerges. If there was a manager, I'd guess that's where they were hiding too. We ordered a hodge-podge of things since this would be our only chance to visit: spicy Hawaiian pizza, quesabirria, lamb lollipops, and charred carrots. The lamb and the quesabirria were the obvious standouts. Leagues above the other two items. They had so much flavor and were a delight to eat. The pizza did not taste like it came out of a wood-fired oven and was very heavy on the cheese (and that's saying something, coming from a couple of Wisconsinites). The carrots were nowhere near charred; the chunks were all vastly different sizes so not all of them were cooked, and they desperately needed that caramelization for depth of flavor.

Great soup with chicken dumpling (two daily choices). Did go with the broasted chicken and rib (baby back) combo. Would recommend just going with just the chicken instead, and step up to a half chicken at that for just a dollar or so. Not a baby back rib fan, should have figured so and won't ding them on it. Dinner came with a choice of vegetable and potato sides along with ice cream. Breakfast is an all day option minus waffles. Comfortable booth seating. ----------- Day 2: Saturday - longer list of specials available Vegetable and creamy chicken rice soups were good and promising start. We ordered the roast turkey and the prime rib specials that came with the choice of soup and potato. Dinners off the regular menu would include a choice of vegetable and ice cream/pudding. The prime rib which I ordered medium rare, cooled down rather quickly. Maybe ordering it medium would have given it a better balance of temperature and doneness. Guessing this was prepared via a roast cooked to rare, cooled, and then cooked again when ordered which makes it tricky to get it to the right doneness and temperature without over/undercooking? The roast turkey was on the dry side and the dressing a little bland. In hindsight, might have considered their country fried steak or the breaded pork tenderloin with better results - something made to order and not require cooking in advance/twice-cooking.
