This was our first visit to Doyle's. My husband got a single scoop of mint chip ice cream. Originally, I was going to get a banana split but they were out of bananas. I decided to get a triple scoop: chocolate thunder, mint chip, strawberry ice cream. I was able to add 3 different toppings, whip cream and/or nuts. I got strawberry, chocolate and fudge. I thought strawberry, was fresh fruit strawberries. I thought the chocolate was chocolate chips. There is a little patio area, with tables and chairs behind the parlor. I was super disappointed by the ice cream I received. The sauces were overwhelming, disproportionate to the ice cream. The sauces were way too sweet. I couldn't even taste the ice cream. The ice cream was fair, not rich and creamy. I didn't finish even half the ice cream, not worth the sugar high and dry mouth. I so badly wanted to love this place, but I ended up being shockingly disappointed. I sampled the butter brickle, which was so outrageously sweet that I couldn't stand it. So I went with a single scoop of chocolate on a waffle cone. I thought, "You can't go wrong with chocolate." Well, I was wrong. The chocolate ice cream was completely devoid of the taste of chocolate. Then I thought, "This house made cone is going to be epic." After a few samples our group ordered butter brickle, Carmel apple, cookies & cream, and a fruit flavor (sorry, forgot the name). They were all amazing! About as old school as it gets. No frills, no seating, limited flavors, but what they do they do well. Really creamy, fresh ice cream and house made waffle cones you smell when you walk in. I had the caramel apple which was unique tasting with a great sour apple flavor. Very unique and great flavor. There's very few of these types of places left in America! The ambiance is great, the toys are epic, and the antiques and honegrown nature of it bring back one's childhood nostalgia. All this being said, the exterior and the interior could use a little bit of remodeling. The menu could also be more organized. However, the customer service is great, and I like how they're maintaining the old-fashioned nature of something that's probably more than 70 years' old. The ice cream is not near as sugary as a lot of places you're used to. It's also not as creamy. However, I particularly enjoyed the maple nut. Their homemade banana was also pretty good. For years I have been saying I was going to stop and try this place. I finally made it! The shop could use a bit of updating and made to look a bit "fresher", but the owner was nice and the ice cream was GOOD! I think with a bit of marketing and a bit of a facelift....this could go back to being the popular spot it used to be. Kendal Yards may be a ways down the road...but people would definitely stop by if they saw a few upgrades. The "bowls" were really cheap paper and everything looked a bit rundown. I hope the owner can keep making it work now that he took over for his uncle. So, I live a few blocks away from Doyles and had watched it for many months closed during the pandemic etc. Now with that mostly under control and the arrival of summer, they have expanded their hours. So I ent in and discovered they had a flavor from my childhood in the Midwest called "Butter Brickle". OMG, I had not eaten that since I was 10 or 12 years old. Because of Doyle's size and the amount of its typical transaction, it doesn't take credit cards or checks. Doyle's is also open only a few months a year. They have no phone number. Check its Facebook page for hours of operation. They're really good about keeping it updated. Doyle's makes old fashioned ice cream in kid friendly flavors like bubblegum and black licorice (my favorite), and nostalgic flavors like maple walnut and rum raisin. But they churn in small batches every week, so flavors do run out and are rotated. Scoops are large and milkshakes are generous. They also serve up sodas, floats and sundaes. I've got to be honest, I was taken to and past Doyle's multiple times, and I still couldn't tell you how to get there. From the outside, it looks like someone took an old house and repurposed it to sell ice cream. Since we arrived to visit our family, all we heard was, "Doyle's! We need to go to Doyle's! I want some Doyle's!" This was not coming from a small child. Upon setting foot in Doyle's, the first thing that stands out is the collection of toys in the front. The three or four display cases span a century. The space age is a particular highlight. But, this review isn't about a toy museum. We lined up to get our cones. Everything at Doyle's is handmade, with the cone makers currently in use to prove it. Mint chocolate chip, two watermelon and Reese's. It was all good stuff. Doyle's is cash only, so be prepared. I grew up in Spokane, but had not heard of Doyle's until we moved into the West Central neighborhood 2 years ago. We saw it as we shopped for homes in the neighborhood, and decided to wait and make that part of our "first night in our new home" celebration. Our four daughters have since made that part of our summertime celebrations, anxiously watching the windows for signs of reopening after the long winter, and making sure we're there (mourning) on closing weekend in the fall. Doyle's is truly timeless. It originated as a stop along the trolley for residents heading out to Natatorium Park, the amusement park that sat on the river bank at the end of Boone (where the carousel in Riverfront Park used to be). In a neighborhood full of a century of history, it's a perfect fit. Their selection of ice creams varies throughout the season. This can be a good thing, like the excitement when Huckleberries are in season and the flavor hits the menu, or a devastating thing, like the time they were out of Chocolate Thunder (NOOOOOOOOO....). All in all, it is the beauty of a small, family business that caters to the community and its customers. Other people have touched on the ambiance. One favorite of our kids is eating their ice cream while playing "I Spy". We've been going for two years, and every time we go in we discover new things in the display cases. Along with the ambiance, there is also a small garden area to eat. Rustic metal tables and benches add to the vintage feel of the shop. While no pets are allowed in the shop, this area has been great for when we've walked down with our dog. The owners' pets are very friendly and "play well" with others. As far as payment goes, they do only take cash. However, their prices are very reasonable for a small business, and while it is an inconvenience to make sure we carry cash, it's well worth it for the lower prices in exchange for no credit card processing fees. And, again, it is a family business who is choosing to operate a certain way. All in all, this is a great little ice cream shop. If you're looking for gluten free, sugar free, or other dietary restrictions, this is not the place for you. Doyle's, unashamedly, is what it is and has made the wise decision to not try to be all things to all people.
