My husband and I actually booked back to back appointments. I haven't been to the eye doctor since I was in 5th grade, mainly because I claim to have perfect vision, but after not being able to see (especially while driving) my family banded against me and made me go (insert mad face). And I'll admit, i was mainly not going because I thought it was because I was getting older and/or possibly because I am scared to death of that eye puff machine. Basically I'm Rachel off friends in the episode "The One With Joey's Big Break" and also where Rachel goes to the eye doctor, gets some drops and everyone has to hold her down to put them in, yeah that's actually based on my life story. ANYWAY -- the doc tells me the eye puff machine is old skool and that technology is no longer in use. Now they use these super high tech camera things and it's not *as* scary. After the camera screenings etc. the eye exam was where I seriously almost lost my shit. Dr. Guappone 1) looks like Bill Nye. 2) IS THE SMARTEST MOST ARTICULATE MAN ON EARTH (well at least in the eye doc world). He didn't give me some BS medical terms. He actually broke down what was wrong in terms I could understand and even demonstrated on a model, and as a visual learner I was super appreciative of this! Also as others have said, he is very thorough. When I started off my saying I was a perfectionist, he went on to say he was too - and hence the through exam to make sure that the exam matched up to the camera readings. I just could not believe the amount of time he took to explain both to me and my husband about our situations, preventative health, and plan moving forward. It was a breath of fresh air and seriously eliminated (well almost) my fear of going to the doctor. I cannot reccomend him enough! The only negative and -1 star. I felt like the glasses selection was a bit outdated. They had some trendy designers, but not nearly enough or in the styles I wanted. Although the young man helping me was funny and enthusiastic I was put off by how insistent he was when trying to get me to purchase glasses through them. I literally just learned I needed glasses, if I have to wear them on my face every day - I want and need to find the ones I actually like! And again, as a perfectionist do some reserach first. Albeit super friendly, would lay off the sales pitch. Overall cannot reccomend this place enough and I will certainly be back for my ongoing check-ups!

This practice is one of the very few in Cincinnati who are not part of the 80 + doctors at the Cincinnati Eye Institute and whose practice is not owned by a Wall Street Private Equity company. His nephew, Dr. Alex Kuley, joined the practice a few years ago. The small practice treats patients as individuals while being on top of the latest procedures in eye surgery. I am a retired physician. I appreciate their approach and have sent many family members and friends to them. My husband sees them. (He has no eye problems other than needing reading glasses.) My Mother-in-law, who has macular degeneration, also sees them.

They're located in the arcade of the Carew Tower, in downtown. I would suggest making an appointment around lunchtime and grabbing a bite to eat next door at Hathaway's diner. Then before you leave the building, be sure to make a quick trip to the observation deck on top of the building for what is arguably the most spectacular view of Cincinnati. You won't be disappointed.

Deceptive Billing Practices…read more I am extremely dissatisfied with this business due to two separate, highly deceptive billing incidents. Issue 1: Preemptive Overcharging During my initial eye exam and contact lens fitting, the staff overcharged my credit card by $40 above my insurance copay ($70). When I questioned it on the spot, they claimed they "preemptively" charge extra in case insurance denies a claim. After I insisted my maximum copay was $70, they agreed to a refund. However, they claimed that because it was a Saturday, they would process the refund during the work week. Instead of the promised refund, they ultimately forced a store credit on me. Issue 2: Surprise Billing I scheduled a follow-up appointment because my trial lenses were blurry, and I confirmed over the phone that this recheck would be free of charge. During the exam, the doctor asked a few questions about dry eyes as it could be the reason for the ill-fitting lens and offered to recommend drops. Later, I discovered they billed me for a separate "dry eye consultation." I was not informed that this would be the case or made aware of the relevant charges. Had they been transparent, I could have had the opportunity to accept or decline. When I disputed the bill, they claimed they had to charge me because I did not have medical insurance on file, which misses the point entirely. My main objection was that I had not been properly informed beforehand. They refused to remove the charge and kept my previous $40 credit to cover it. In my opinion, this office engages in deceptive billing practices by adding hidden fees without clear patient consent. I believe converting a free follow-up into an unapproved medical charge is a breach of professional and ethical standards. Avoid this provider if you expect honest pricing and transparent communication. [EDIT] Response to the business owner's reply below: Josiah Y., I do not agree with your assessment of the situation. I scheduled and arrived for a standard, complimentary contact lens recheck. An eye examination is a necessary part of that specific service. Expecting a patient to actively refuse an examination during a recheck appointment just to avoid unapproved charges is completely unrealistic. The core issue is a total lack of informed consent. I was never told that the nature of my visit had changed from a free recheck to a billable medical consultation, nor was I informed of any additional fees. Because I was not given the opportunity to consent to these charges, I dispute the examination fee and request a full refund.
