Two shampoos, a head massage, great conversation, beautiful salon atmosphere. I genuinely felt taken care of. As someone with alopecia who doesn't go to salons often, trusting someone with my hair felt significant, and Ashley made me feel comfortable the entire time. I drove from Washington, DC and would absolutely do it again. There was no thorough consultation. Yasmine hardly spoke to me throughout my appointment. She asked a few questions at the outset. There was no education component aside from attempting to sell me products at the conclusion of the service. Despite my very clear request to maintain my length, a significant amount of length was removed, far beyond what was discussed or was necessary to improve the shape of my hair. That loss is permanent. It will take years for my hair to fully recover, and there is nothing that can be done in a follow-up appointment to restore what was taken. Beyond the length loss, the cut itself lacked cohesion. It did not account for the different shrinkage rates across my curl patterns, which range from approximately 3C to 4B, and as a result the shape dried unevenly in an angular helmet shape with blunt awkward bangs, rather than nicely framing my face. The styling portion of the service further obscured the cut. Extremely heavy product was used, weighing my hair down and masking the actual shape. Additionally, I added a conditioning and protein treatment. After that, she agreed and attempted to complete the job. Courtney informed me that the salon only had mousse available for styling. I expressed my concern about whether that would be sufficient for coiling, and she assured me it would be. Courtney began styling my daughter's hair but paused for about 15 minutes to address another customer. She mentioned that removing the heat damage from my daughter's hair would result in a shorter style, and that sometimes heat-damaged hair can revert to a curly state. Unfortunately, the final result lacked definition. The damage looked worse, and my daughter's hair was damp and puffy at the roots. I expressed my dissatisfaction with the outcome. She was on the phone pausing to text/answer calls and working with a contractor that was there in person. When my hair was finished, I told her I did not like it as I could see the weft of the hair. She told me she could change how the top weft was sewn in and she did, which still didn't help. Neither of us had time in our schedule that day, So she told me I could come back if I really couldn't make it work. The next morning I let her know I was uncomfortable with the hair and would like it taken down as offered and redone as a basic sew in. We exchanged texts back and forth and ultimately I was unhappy and requested for the style to be taken down. I was rescheduled for today for 12:30. As I was on the way I received a text asking to be pushed back 45 min later at 1:15. I arrived only to find out that she was having her nails done. I could tell she was running short on time based on her phone conversation telling someone she would let them know how she is doing on time. During the appointment she was on her laptop and phone handling whatever business. A few times strands of my hair were pulled and I let her know which seemed to irritate her but the last appointment, I kept quiet and just dealt with it. Which left sores in my scalp. She only took out the front of my hair and I stopped her and informed her I was expecting a take down a reinstall. She said she was confused and we never talked about it. I then showed her the texts. She then said she didn't have time to do that and next time she wouldn't charge me for the take down and would discount the sew in. I said ok. She still was preoccupied during this interaction and said she would text me a few openings she had once she was done on the phone. I said ok and left only to receive a text stating that I would be refunded $101 and would no longer be serviced in the future. Which is fine because I had no intention on returning. I was never rude or disrespectful. I mean I appreciate the refund but the time wasted is irreplaceable. Her suite is dirty and unorganized and the cleaning products used are way too strong. She seems like a nice person but maybe needs an assistant.

I have had the absolute worst experience with NappStar NYC at the Waldorf, MD location. I went in for a wash and retwist and sat over three hours after being washed to get styled. Once in the chair, the stylist did not do my hair as I asked and while there were some parameters around why she couldn't twist it the way I wanted, my style pictured did not match what I wanted.... I mean ... it was a bun ... how hard is it to do a bun?! I couldn't sit under the dryer because I had already been there 5 hours and needed to go to work. I requested to speak to the manager who, instead of speaking to me, directly told her stylist "This is just where we are right now", and then further instructed her to stop doing my hair to wash another clients hair who had just arrived 10 minutes prior. Said stylist did not stop my hair because she herself felt as if that was not the right thing to do. Despite being there 5 hours, being completely ignored by the manager, even at check out, I STILL tipped 20%. This doesn't end here... I attempted to reach out to customer service, in which they OFFERED TO REDO MY HAIR. When I requested a different day, I was given the run around. There is no direct phone number, instead they have a customer service person that takes all of their calls. All this week I have been promised a call back in which never happened. I instead had to repeatedly call back every day this week to get answers, which ended up mostly being put on hold. Here is what's wild about this whole story: Napstarr's solution went from offering to redo my hair, to the manager questioning what was wrong with my style , to yesterday, telling the costumer service representative that now they can no longer redo my hair. The reason being was because the stylist that did it is not available and on top of that is not offering any refunds. How you go from offering a redo of my style to nothing at all, is absolutely terrible business. I've requested several times to speak to the manager directly, talk to a supervisor, even atleast an email address in which I'm being told that there isn't any of these options available smh. As a customer, I am left with nothing but an incorrect hairstyle, time wasted, and no option to get a refund or ANYTHING. I mean atleast offer a discount , a free product, or at the least AN APOLOGY?! As much as I have spent monetarily and verbalized praises about this business to others, this is really disheartening. Especially when it's to support a black owned business. I am not letting this go easily.
