Been going there on and off for over a year. The haircuts themselves were nothing special. A basic trim is $75. If you cancel within 24 hrs they charge you the entire amount of the service you didn't get. I had to switch an appointment at the last minute last Saturday. It was a long story and entirely my fault. While the front desk girl was nice and polite the stylist gave me the stink face the entire time. Would not crack a smile once, and the vibes eminating off of her were hostile at best. I understand she was disappointed to lose a slot on a Saturday but she should not be sitting near the front desk if she can't control her face. After a horrible week I decided to eat the charge because the thought of having her near my hair was enough to make me never want to go back. read more

Had been going to Ash and Oak for several years to support local, until today. I accidentally had a doctors appointment booked the same day. I called to change the appointment (not cancel) within 24 hours, and the owner charged me the full fee for the appointment, which at baseline isn't cheap for a simple haircut. When I called to discuss, she was condescending, doubling down on her "cancellation policy", as if it was my first time booking with her salon, and actually had it in her to explain to me how "hotels and restaurants do the same thing". I understand policies exist for a reason, but to not even try to work with a client who has been supporting her business and her stylist for several years was shocking. I'm disappointed that I gave her my business for as long as I did. Stand behind policies all you want, but I doubt that cancellation fee goes into her stylist pocket. read more

So glad I found this place! After my favorite salon closed in the wake of the Pandemic, I was a little distraught at the idea of having to find another salon and stylist. I was optimistic about Ash + Oak after seeing so many positive reviews, and they exceeded all of my expectations with their attentive service and quality. My stylist was Julie at the Catonsville location. She was very patient with me as I explained what I was looking for, and asked clarifying questions to make sure we were on the same page. As a new client, I really appreciated this, and felt more confident working with a new stylist. The final result was light, bouncy and flattering, and something I felt comfortable maintaining on my own from home. At the end of the appointment, Julie recommended a few of their Davines products and mentioned the discount for new clients. I ended up buying WAY more than I had anticipated but with Julie vouching for them, and a few other clients that happened to be near by, I decided to go for it. Never have I spent more on hair care products but never have I been more pleased with how my hair has withstood all the heat styling and humidity! The salon itself is very clean and impeccably decorated. The aesthetic is minimalist with bright whites, neutrals, wood and mixed metal accents, and lots of plants to add some greenery. I went to Ash + Oak for the first time today, and I am so glad I did! First things first. My hair looks amazing!! (Note, I am super particular about my hair, and my sister is a stylist in LA so I have high standards!) Thank you, Hannah Dahlgren, for taking the time to listen and work with me to give me the style and color update I had been wanting. I got a partial balayage (after Hannah suggested that I didn't really need a full), root touch up, cut, blow out and curled finish. She is a "junior" stylist but is on her way up! She was not only knowledgeable but friendly and fun. I also had a fabulous wash and head massage by Erin! The entire staff at Ash + Oak is so friendly and the owner even stepped over to say hello and compliment Hannah's work. Next, let's talk salon: gorgeous, trendy, clean and bright. They have a separate room (with a glass door) to hang in when waiting for color to process... it's off to the side with a sofa, coffee maker and Netflix. BRILLIANT! They're easy to find, and ample parking is available with street spots and nearby free public parking lot. This is a very delayed rating but!!! My overall experience was awesome. The staff were friendly and the salon was beautiful. My hair was done by Kasee and it turned out great! I had initially had gone in for a balayage but because my hair was on the shorter side, Kasee recommended that I get highlights throughout instead. In the end, I'm so glad I took the recommendation because my hair is unique and I have been getting compliments even as it's growing out. Definitely recommend and I would suggest going on their Instagram to see each person's portfolio. Only reason why I didn't give a full 5-star is just because although I appreciated the work and service, I felt like they had their usual customers and majority of the attention was on them. PS. I came here last Sunday for a wash, blowdry, and style with Summer ($50) for my engagement photos. The salon is cute and they were taking COVID seriously. My hair is thinning, so these types of visits are usually stressful for me, but she handled it gracefully and made me feel comfortable the whole time. I showed her a few pictures and she totally understood right away. She made my hair look gorgeous and the styling lasted the hours before- and during- our photos. I couldn't be more happy with the end results! I will definitely be back for future blow-outs and probably also give them a try for cut and color in the future. Firstly, I want to say that I am disheartened to have to write this review having been a customer here a couple times with no issues. Unfortunately for my partner, Oshay, this was not the case. To provide some background, I booked a service for my partner here as a birthday gift. Because of the experience I had and the knowledge in color theory i believed they had I felt comfortable referring him here. I wanted to ensure the salon knew ahead of time what our desired outcome was so, i provided pictures prior to the appointment and even dropped off one of his locs. The color service did not meet our expectations and we were offered another appointment. On both appointments the color was not what we asked for. The stylists were unaware of the color we had even discussed prior to the appointment and the materials that were needed for the appointment we were told had just ran out. That's fine, we will return for the service that was promised. The appointment was booked. I emailed the manager to bring up the concerns regarding the lack of preparedness my partner experienced and the fact that all services state a blow dry and style are included however, each time my partner was walking out with wet hair in 30 degree weather. We obviously do not expect a style as he has locs but the least that could've been provided was blow dried hair as per the service booked that cost us close to $600 by the way. To add fuel to the fire after i sent the email addressing the concerns the owner reached out to my partner and left a voicemail stating they no longer want to have any interaction with him and to call if he wanted to discuss further. To our surprise, when he called and spoke to the owner she was dismissive and defensive regarding our negative experiences. She took no accountability and went as far as to say that he was abusive to the staff. Please, I would love to be provided examples of this alleged "abuse". That is not a word to throw around lightly and further pushes the notion or stereotype of black men being aggressive but i guess that's an easy cop out to avoid taking accountability. How is it that he was abusive when i was the only one who addressed the concerns with the staff? And all concerns were in writing, no disrespect, no abuse, just our experience as customers. I would like to advise any person of color, black person, or anyone who values diversity to scroll through their social media, reviews, and photos. You will see the primary demographic they serve is Caucasian. Not surprising, the negative reviews are generally from people with textured hair, i.e. curly hair & ethnic hair. This place does not serve everyone equally. I'm filled with guilt to have brought him here to experience such discrimination. It's completely out of line to make false claims of abuse, it truly is a disservice to actual victims of abuse. I hope at the very least what comes from this is that the staff is provided with additional training on different hair textures, but i honestly can not ever recommend this establishment to anyone moving forward. read more

I cannot express how happy I am with my hair after a visit to see Vanessa in their Hampden location. My hair started orangey and mouse-brown. She added vanilla balayage and kept the dark natural lowlights to keep it dimensional. Beautiful cut to add movement. & I love, love the blowout & style. It took two hours and I am a new woman. I booked my appointment with Danielle at the Hampden location. The salon itself is absolutely stunning, incredibly clean and has a soothing aesthetic. Bella at the front desk was friendly and attentive. The teamwork going on in the salon throughout my service was amazing to see, the women who work here are truly respectful of one another and seem like a family. Danielle was amazing. She took her time, made great conversation, and still managed to make me feel important all while balancing other appointments since my service took significantly longer than it was booked for (I am very blonde and my hair takes awhile to lift). I would recommend anyone go see Danielle, she is a master of her craft. And, truly, you could not go wrong with any of the women at this salon (from what I saw). Parking at this location is street parking for free or $2 for up to 5 hours, so incredibly reasonable! I can't wait to go back. They give first-time customers a 20% coupon to use towards products. I bought the All In One Milk hair treatment that she used on my hair before blow drying, and I got some samples to take home too. I was told by the hairdresser who had cut my much-longer hairstyle that she didn't specialize in the angled bob I wanted to return to ... particularly for my wedding photos ... to please return the next day to have someone who DOES specialize in it cut my hair. I did so and provided multiple photos (3 attached here). We discussed it at length. I left with my hair razor-butchered, uneven and jagged everywhere - rather than nice, clean lines; and with "v's" on the sides by my ears. It looks hideous - not like a $100 salon cut. I went to another hairdresser immediately afterwards, in absolute tears. She was shocked how bad it was and had to butcher off even more just to try to correct the sides. I have a pixie cut at this point. This haircut won't grow out before wedding photos. If you don't know how to do a cut, be HONEST with the customer! And don't blame-shame them when they get teary eyed and politely say "This isn't what I asked for, and doesn't look like the photos at all. I feel ugly." The free haircut doesn't compensate for the damage to my self-esteem or my upcoming photos. I took the high road and left a tip for her time, despite being blame-shamed by not one, but three stylists. Pretty upsetting. read more

If you go in to fix what they did they will do the bare minimum to fix it. They also will not be prepared until you walk in. If you send a picture the hair stylist won't look at it until you see them. They will have you leave out their salon with wet hair. They also make false promise. They don't know how to color ethnic people hair as you can see on the website and ig there's only white people in their advertising and only hire white people to do the work. Summer cut my hair for the first time on Friday. I try to wait until I have a chance to wash and style it myself before I leave a review because she made it look perfect, but the question is: does it still look great when I'm styling it myself? The answer is YES. She cut my hair into a long shag and it looks fabulous when I air dry it as well as when I blow it out. Ash + Oak Salon and Spa just so happens to be one of those spots. From the moment I walked in to the beautiful, modern store front off Frederick Road, I knew I was in for a treat. In town visiting family, I booked an appointment at Ash + Oak after researching hair salons in the area, and discovering they won Baltimore Magazine's Best of Baltimore 2018 for Best Salon. Upon checking in with the incredibly warm Maggie at the front desk for my appointment with Amanda, I was offered a mimosa and seat while I waited for Amanda to finish with her current client. A few minutes later, Amanda came over to greet me, and walked me to the chair where she would work her magic. Nearly 6 weeks since my last haircut, my hair had begun to get scraggly and unkempt. Wanting a new look, I asked Amanda for her advice on what would look best for my face, and several questions later, we reached a decision. I was led up to the shampoo room where I was treated to a relaxing scalp massage and hair wash from Carly. Once my scalp was all buttered up, I was walked back downstairs and returned to Amanda's chair. Throughout the cut, Amanda flawlessly flowed as she layered away my hair with scissors, as if they were her paintbrush, and my hair was her canvas. We kept great conversation throughout the cut, and Amanda really helped me feel welcome to a place I had never been before. For being such a new salon, these guys have it together! The interior is done very well and is set up with a few sofas to relax on. They have an adorable "processing room" with a leather sofa and EXTREMELY comfortable shampooing chairs - I felt like I could fall asleep I was so comfortable when I was getting shampooed. The coffee machine they have in there is no joke- best cup of Joe I've had in a hair salon. Beth did amazing as always, I've been going to her at previous salons but was definitely impressed with this experience. Ash + Oak Salon in Catonsville is amazing! It's conveniently located, with both street parking in front of the store and several reserved spots behind it, making it easy to find park. My stylist was Sarah and she truly is the "fine hair whisperer!" Over the years, I've found that stylists either *really* know how to cut and style fine hair or they don't have the first clue. Sarah is definitely the former! Having fine hair herself, she has practical experience with the trials that come with cutting and styling fine hair. She was happy to look at pictures I brought to show her what I liked and disliked (since I really had no preference over what exact cut or style I wanted - more like "I'd like to feel pretty" and "I need it to be easy to care for since I have 3 kids," and "I'd like it short, above my shoulders but below my chin." She took those statements and my opinions on the pictures I brought and gave me a cut and style that is very flattering. She didn't try to upsell me on anything but did tell me about the products she was using and why she was using them, in case I decided I'd like to purchase my own but never did she actually try to sell me anything, which I very much appreciate! She was also easy to chat with overall! The salon was clean and very nicely decorated inside. The salon chairs were comfortable which definitely makes a longer appointment better! All of the products used smelled very nice and light, so the salon wasn't heavily scented even though there were a few other clients getting their hair done while I was there. A nice change from my last salon, for sure! COVID protocols are in place. Staff and clients all wear masks, the receptionist takes your temperature as you come in the door, and chairs were being wiped down after each client. As noted in other reviews, you must tip in either cash or via VENMO (there's a framed list of each stylist's VENMO by the register) so plan ahead. The street parking is metered so be sure to bring change, in case you end up parking there. There were no hidden fees - each stylist has a charge, based on their training and experience level - and that fee includes wash, cut, and style. If you're offered another service or treatment, they tell you the cost of that before doing it. Although I was able to provide the salon with her name, phone number, appointment date and time, the stylist she saw, etc., they did not honor my referral. After four treatments of having a color correction, I was told on my fifth visit that the prices had changed. I did not receiv a text/email or a call from the colorist or the Salon to inform me of the new pricing system. I was informed that to do my color correction this visit, was going to be $145/- AN HOUR! I asked (3 times) to speak with the owner/manager, and was told she was busy. I asked the colorist if she had the authority to charge what I paid the previous four visits as I was not informed of the new pay structure, and she said no. I was heading out of the country on a trip three days later and would've walked out of there, but needed it done. When I told the colorist, I would not be back, all she said was, I'm sorry, but it was nice to meet you. Before you even make an appointment, ask for their pricing, it still cost me in the $250 range. read more

FIVE STARS, FIVE STARS! Seriously. I recently moved from Austin, Texas where they know blonde very well. I saw the same lady for 7 years in Texas so moving here gave me hair anxiety. I had a series of traumatic color and cut experiences in Virginia, so after some instagram stalking and a friendly referral I found Amanda.
