The rest area has a nice "Wisconsin Welcomes You" sign for your state line selfie. Inside, the welcome center has tons of brochures and information on Wisconsin tourist attractions and lodging which would definitely be useful for visitors. The restroom is clean and the "you are here" map told me where I was. Note that there is only this rest area for eastbound traffic. The Minnesota Welcome Center is on the other side of the bridge. As well, the car area was next to the highway with the trucks further away. I prefer designs that help people slow down as they come in and put the cars further away from the road. This rest area has a playground and picnic tables and plenty of space for some green before you get back on the road. There are no signs prohibiting overnight parking which is a nice plus. This is a nice little rest area. We noticed an odor when we first exited the vehicle but as the…read moresigns will tell you that is because the wastewater from this location is pumped to a nearby pond and filtered with sand and peat. There is a good amount of parking and the bathrooms are clean. I also noticed a flower vase and decor in the women's restroom and the garbage being emptied while we were here so it certainly seems like this location is well taken care of. There is a vending machine and pet relief area, as well as lots of grass and picnic tables. Signs posted say that trucks can stay 10 hours in a 24 hour period but standard vehicles can remain no more than 4 hours in a 24 hour period just FYI.

Some emails on my LTE hotspot, making breakfast, drinking coffee, and doing a little bit of repair on the inside of the van. The parking area is very well back from the highway so there's absolutely no noise from vehicles going past. Four-wheeler parking is right next to the truck parking so you'll have them idling all night but other than that, this is a quiet and peaceful rest area. The bar and restaurant is closed again, leaving the only option the rooftop. Last week I visited the roof top and found they didn't anticipate the weekend of activities in La Crosse. Every time we asked for a simple cocktail, it was oh we don't have cranberry juice up here,or simple syrup like it was unattainable?? It was like everyone was grumpy, like they were annoyed. I take this to mean the management is sloppy and the wait staff has to constantly improvise. It's not like the hotel has 24 floors? Asked for shaved Parmesan, for the pizza. The bar service acted like I was asking for moon cheese! Grudgingly they said no we don't have any here in the rooftop bar. At this point I noticed the manager standing sentinel and rather arrogant, stating that he "doesn't like cheese ", so I guess nobody does?

Michael at the front desk graciously allowed us to check in right away. It was so nice to be settled in our room before heading off on our jaunt. This Hampton Inn was immaculately clean no matter where we were and all the staff were so friendly. Being located close to downtown and the river was a huge plus for us, and parking in their lot was free. We plan on returning to the area this fall and will certainly book that stay with Hampton Inn.

Breakfast is a bit typical for included breakfast; I enjoyed the western omelet and maple sausages more than the scrambled eggs and chicken sausages. View from our room was also nice. Definitely go to La Crosse Distilling Co. on Vine Street.
