Been coming to this store like once a year for 15 years. I always spend more than I intend and I've never regretted it. The pieces I get always end up being my most worn and last me for years. The prices are worth it!! And I rarely think that. The customer service is incredible and so attentive and so much fun. I always feel happier leaving than when I came in. My friend and I stopped by this shop to take a look inside. We were pleasantly surprised at all the nice pieces. However, we were casually looking at the jeans and the sales associate pointed out some jeans by a designer. All I said was, I wear Agolde and she said those are "trash" and they get baggy after wearing and she knows because she use to sell them or something to that effect. I respect the sales associate's opinion since she's in the fashion business but I don't think those words to voice her opinion were necessary and uncalled for. What an incredible little boutique!! Full of fashion gems and surprises. I had so much fun being styled by Sheila. I'm someone who loves fashion but hates trying on clothes, and Sheila made the whole process easy by selecting things she knew would look great on me. She picked things I wouldn't have known to choose for myself, and I left there with clothes that make me feel like a million bucks! The clothes are super high quality and things I will wear again and again for years to come. I was disappointed with the shopping on Chestnut St. The sales associates were either too pushy, too snooty, or completely uninterested. Then I happened into Dress. I will admit, the clothing in the window looked slightly matronly but I went in. SHEILA, the consultant there was fantastic! Enthusiastic but not pushy, so down to earth, and very knowledgeable about inventory. Pants shopping is my biggest nightmare - she didn't try to tell me I was crazy, she simply picked out a pair of Bevy Flog cargo pants she knew would be flattering and suggested I give them a try. Genius! They're my new favorite pants and since returning home to New York I ordered and received a second pair. Shipping was free and super fast. Sheila and I had a great time chatting and I'll be a return customer whenever I'm in San Francisco. I would highly recommend visiting Sheila at Dress! read more

According to Mark Gungor's spot-on talk about men's brain versus women's brain, my mind is comprised of boxes and he's correct. Until I found Dress, my brain's boxes that are not meant to touch could not unravel the internet super highway that is my wife's brain when it comes down to clearly expressing to me those gifts that she would most dearly desire for Christmas, birthday, etc. Dress sorted my ongoing dilemma, absolute state of constant confusion over gifting. Elke and AnnaRose, armed with my wife's wish list, whirled about the store culminating in a wonderful selection of gifts that most certainly pleased she who must be obeyed. And, I was able to drift off to that most comfortable place in my brain referred to by Mssr. Gungor as man's nothing box: the box we inhabit when fishing, staring off into space whilst mother-in-law shares for the 100th time how her and husband met so very long ago. If you, like me, are baffled by the internet super highway that is your better half's brain and yields frustrating results when pressed to express their heart's desire for any special or not so special occasion, please take on board my advice to splash out your hard-earned treasure at Dress. i was pretty disappointed with dress. I get really peeved when no one welcomes me into their store. I feel almost like an intruding on them. MY friend and I walked in and no one even gave us the time of day. We made eye contact with the store reps and no one said hi, just brushed past us. The store is on the small side but FULL of stuff but it is hard to find things. Nothing is merchandised properly and it is hard to look through. They have lots of Vince sweaters, james perse tees(good basics) sandals, dresses, jewelry. the only time some one gave me any acknowledgement that i was alive and breathing was when she complimented me on my jewelry(which was nice but she didn't ask if I needed help or anything) this place just left a bad taste in my mouth. i absolutely love this boutique! the store feels so perfectly edited for my style. they carry a ton of my favorite go-to comfy brands (theory, vince, rag & bone), but also have plenty of items that push me out of my comfort zone. i've always found the employees to be super friendly and helpful, and they've helped me out of a pinch on more than one occasion (i.e., finding a nye outfit at 6pm on 12/31, scoring a gorgeous dress on my way out of town for a wedding, etc.). added bonus: their jewelry collection is super fun and eclectic. i highly recommend! read more

It's not a big shop but it's packed with goodies. Must admit service is hit or miss. When I'm just browsing, i don't care as much if they are not super friendly and attentive. Of course, I feel very differently if I am looking to purchase... The last visit, I was drawn to a purse almost immediately. After browsing through the racks and trying on a few pieces, I asked to see the purse. It was a Halston heritage and it was a lot cheaper than expected. The biggest debate came on which color to pick - jet black or dusk. Ended up with the jet black and it's great. I've definitely gotten compliments on it. I happened to wander past this place on one of my rare moments shopping in the Marina. Let's face it, there are plenty of other cities and boutiques out there. The selection here is small but good. Whoever the buyer is has a good handle on key trend items in the high-end casual wear side of the spectrum. There are some great pieces here. However, I agree with other reviews that the service at this place is awful. Where were these sales people found? I understand that SF being a mecca of intelligent transplants, you can only find so many people to staff a clothing boutique. If you aren't dressed the part walking in, they won't even look at or acknowledge you. If you look the part, they will trail your arse all the way into the dressing room and bombard you with non-stop compliments. These sorts of salespeople pretty much screw over the owner with their subpar sales strategies. I have a feeling they didn't grow up in a cosmopolitan area...perhaps they're from the fields and farms somewhere... Note to salespeople: Wake up and smell reality! This is sell merchandise time, not a social mixer where you pick and choose who you want to service! Duh! Definitely take a look in this place. If they're nice, you can buy something. Nice selection and great customer service. I always pass this boutique but only stopped in for the first time today--it's so small you can easily miss it. This week they had a wonderful window display of holiday dresses which piqued my interest; I was quite surprised by the selection they have inside as well. There are a lot of high-end, designer items, so be prepared to spend a little more. Having said that, the pieces are classic and can be worn for years to come. (I like to think of it as an investment.) I bought a DVF mini dress today, and when I went home to show my girlfriend, we found it online on sale at Saks. I called Elka, the owner at 'dress' and she did a price adjustment immediately. I'm so happy to find this little gem. I will be back again for sure. I have to say that I've bought a lot of my clothes and jewelry here, and the staff has always been very friendly (but not obsequiously so). You've got to give them credit for being one of the first boutiques in SF to carry the Kooba, Botkier's Trigger and Sydney Evans jewelry. It is in the heart of the Marina, so I feel like I can only shop there so often for fear of dressing like a "Marina chick" but they have some great stuff, plain and simple. read more

This store just gets it. The designers they choose are spot on for SF women who want to look cute and current but still deal with the bizarre weather and more casual culture (compared to LA and NY). I honestly think that some of the reviewers here are either shopping at a different store or something is wrong with them as this is some of the best customer service I have ever received (and I shop ALOT). They will order stuff for me, email me with info (but not annoyingly) and are honest and helpful when I am in the store. I'm decidedly a thrifty shopper, especially when it comes to my clothes. The ONLY reason why I bought something here today was because of the humongo summer sale currently going on. 50% off the whole store! Some items were 80% off, i.e. the one shirt that I bought, that I would not have otherwise bought at the mind-boggling retail price of $190. I scored with the $29 sale price! Lucking out this way NEVER happens to me, so I'm still in awe of the fact that it actually did happen to ME. Wow. Anyway, the shop is small, with a rather upscale collection. There's a wide range of trendy pieces -- some really crazy, other stuff more wearable. Definitely for the more youthful set. Everything IS pricey. But still, not nearly as pricey as other boutiques on Chestnut such as Dylan, which is sphincter-clenching expensive. Service-wise, the ladies were quite pleasant and nice. Not overly fawning, which I appreciated. Just friendly and helpful. I'd come back again to browse and fantasize about actually shelling out $400 for a shirt. I left San Francisco for a few years and have just returned only to be pleasantly surprised by the amazing service provided by the helpful and friendly staff. This place is a small little boutique that carries high end designers. They must have had some sort of sale going on since one of the staff informed me that everything was 50% off. I did look around and see several Juicy Couture items and Ugg boots, however I just didn't feel like spending $150 on items that were already 1/2 off (Guess I'm feeling cheap?) I have been shopping at this unique dress shop since they opened their doors. I love this shop as they are excellent at selecting the best items from each designer from season to season. The staff is friendly, helpful and honest...all things I cherish as I hate leaving a store and then finding I don't really look so good in the item. I know this to be true as my closet is full of items I purchased at Dress. The staff knows how to work with my body whether I am up 15lbs or at my goal weight. I always leave feeling better in the items I have bought. I go through my clothes every 6 months for give away and I am always pleasantly surprised to find I keep most items I have purchased from them. They choose high quality and timeless pieces that last. While I usually purchase at full price because they only buy a few in each size I do love there bi-annual 50% off sale at the end of the season. Great finds at great prices. Every time my sister in law comes to visit from Ireland she makes sure we shop there to get the latest in style jeans and they are often on sale,which is an added bonus!! The clothes - are great. The help - keep the attitude! At first I was never approached by anyone here, or even said hello to, and I wish it would have stayed that way! I needed a room to try on stuff, and gave it to the woman to 'start a room' for me. I guess Im not "in the know" because I followed her back and seemed to loose her. Another woman walks past me and gets taken in a room, I ask where mine is and they tell me I have to wait for a room, I said I was ready and I thought she was starting one for me. Her answer, well thats just to start you here, pointing to a pile of clothes. "Im sure she will be really quick." Long story short, I am waiting for a room, starts looking at clothes again to kill time in this line only I seem to be in, and the woman knows I am obviously ready, and shouts to the other end of the store "are you ready yet??" I said, Ive been ready!!!!! Hence my waiting in line and being irritated when you gave my room to the next person that walked up. Excuse me? Dont ask me if I am ready for a room if you dont intend of putting me in one, giving it to the next asshold that walks up then asking impatiently if I am ready when its obvious I was 20 mintues ago!!!!!!! Never again will I buy anything from this store. I wanted a Diane Von Furstenburg coat that they ordered for me. It came in and did not fit and they would not let me even exhange it for something else, which was especially devastating since the coat was $500!!! They NEVER told me that once they ordered it for me, I would not be able to return or exchange it. Their excuse for not letting me exchange it was that it would "upset their customers" to see this coat on their floor since there was only one other size of tho coat left. (makes NO sense!) Not impressed with the clothes or the salespeople. Yes, some of the clothes are cute, but the price tags are ridiculous. The selection is very small and better can be found elsewhere. The clothes also definitely seem aimed at thin people, and they rarely seem to carry above a size 8. Having said all of this, I have been here many times because I have found myself wandering the Marina streets on many occasions. The salespeople are usually very rude, tell you anything to try to make a sale (like telling me something looked "amaaazing" that I know made me look like a stuffed sausage), and are just not very welcoming. read more

Customer service is not part of the culture here. Not sure where the "attitude" comes from - it's quite humorous actually and consistent. The last time I was in here, the two sales girls were voraciously criticizing a customer who just left - it was painful to hear, yet the conversation was meant to be projected to the remaining customers. Apparel collection is nice, but a bit too Lily Pulitzer for my taste - a bit on the frumpy, easter egg colored set. The answer here is SEX - get some for the girls behind the counter and add some sex appeal to the clothing. read more

I just wanted to write that I have never been treated so rudely as I was at Dress this past week. I went and was totally ignored by the staff. One was on the phone the other just kept walking by me without as as a smile. I asked to try on a pair of pants in a size 10 she made me feel like I was asking to try on a size 18. This boutique has a nice selection of cool clothes. Too bad the prices are very steep. I usually come here when there is a sale and I usually get some great deals on denim. The owner/manager is really friendly and offers great advice. Some of the staff can be a bit snobbish while some can be very cool.
