We live in the Bay Area for our primary residence and have had plenty of excellent sushi so when we decided to try the local Truckee joint , honestly, expectations were low. Sunday , Memorial Day weekend the restaurant was packed but we were able to get seated right away . Staff/ service : all smiling and nice . If we needed something ( utensil , drinks, extra side ) they delivered promptly. Food : overall fresh , flavourful , not boring . my husband ordered the dragon roll and high monkey mahki- so good . Kids got their usual chicken teriyaki and rice . picky kids cleaned their plates . - one reviewer who said everything was bland must still be recovering from loosing taste from covid or something We look forward to having a new great spot to bring family and friends. read more

This place continues to be one of my favorite restaurants in Truckee. We were able to enjoy a less hectic crowd after ski week. Service is friendly and the food is delicious. They have a variety of flavors for sushi lovers and those that prefer the cooked variety. The fish is super fresh! Try the dreaming monkey roll or for a little heat, the high monkey maki. Take the low/one star reviews with a grain of salt because they are primarily from non-locals who feel entitled to a speedy service that is not compatible with the time and care that goes into crafting such fine dishes. If you are not prepared to wait for your food, which is served as it is ready, you would be better off grabbing a burger at McDonald's. For those wanting to enjoy an evening of great food while spending quality time with your company, I can't recommend Drunkey Monkey enough! Moving from the east coast to Reno I was surprised to see so many "all you can eat" sushi places, and was rightfully skeptical of the quality at those restaurants. I am so glad we found Drunken Monkey because I was finally able to enjoy sushi that is made with integrity from high quality fish- you can taste and see the difference immediately. Not only is the sushi well worth the price, they also have a great range of non-sushi options. Some sushi restaurants will add on these dishes as an after thought, but Drunken Monkey actually has a huge variety of cooked, non-fish entrees that are equally as delicious. There was a long wait so I decided to order take out. I asked for a menu to look at and after browsing through the menu, was then told that it would take an hour for my food to be ready anyway.... I still went ahead and ordered anyways, figured I'd take care of a few errands and pick it up later. Prior to placing my order, I asked how many pieces I would get for their big sushi roll and was told 8 to 10 pieces. Altogether, I ordered 1 sushi roll, 1 calamari appetizer and 1 chicken teriyaki costing me $60 plus. Fast forward to picking up my order, it was ready in a hour like they said. I look inside and the order is correct, but quite small portions. I open it all at home and the $16 sushi roll was a sad poorly made 6 piece roll and the calamari was completely soggy. On the bright side, the chicken teriyaki was decent. When I called them they just said "that roll actually isn't a 10 piece". Even though that's exactly what I asked and they told me in person at the restaurant. They did absolutely nothing to compensate me and was altogether sloppy, small food portions, long wait & terrible customer service for the amount I paid and waited. Underwhelming and disappointing. Stumbled upon this place while stopping in this plaza to go to another place. Definitely happy it happened the way it did because this place was pretty good. I highly recommend the calamari as a starter. Never had it with sauce on top, so I was a little apprehensive. It ended up being the being the best calamari I have ever had. Enjoyed dinner here with some friends. Service was excellent. The rolls and calamari appetizers were the best. I wouldn't recommend the Singapore noodles. It tasted decent with shrimp and curry, but the cook really chopped up the noodles into little tiny bits. Not great presentation.. The udon noodle bowl looked better. Went to try this place again... decided to do take out so I could enjoy back at the hotel. I went to put in my order and as I hand my card to pay the lady tells me they charge 16% gratuity for to go orders. Sounds ridiculous... to have to pay 16 % to give you more tables to serve more people...16 % to get out of their way. So I pay it anyway...get my food...go back to my hotel room and both of my orders are wrong. I guess they're lucky there aren't too many other choices around them so they continue to get people rolling in. read more

This place is a hot mess! This is the 2nd time I've tried to order food to pick up as instructed on their website. The website link is not active and says the restaurant is closed daily from 3:30-4. I called at 2:30 to place an order and they said they were closed. I asked when they would reopen and they said 4 pm but didn't know if they would offer take out orders ( as sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.). Same experience twice now. When in Truckee craving Japanese, this isn't too shabby. For appetizers, the Famous Monkey Calamari is exceptional for those who loves calamari. My favorite thing here is the Seared Escolar. It reminds me of Pork Belly even though it's fish. However, lookup escolar before you order it. The Dreaming Monkey was exceptionally ordinary, and I prefer rolls with sauce. Those who had the Honey Black Bean Spareribs and Shaking Beef said they are pretty good. Great decor and service, but prices are high for what you get. read more

I've been here a few times and sometimes the service is good. Now I remember why I don't like this place. We got Alex M as our server as it said on the ticket. She pretty much took our order forgot about my order came out and asked if we needed anything else after 3 of us were done with our food. I told her my dinner hasn't come out yet after 30 minutes of waiting. She said do you want to cancel because of the way you're sounding. I only responded because she clearly forgot about my order. Went there for dinner tonight. Service was terrible from beginning to end. It took 10 minutes and me asking the hostess before we even saw our waitress. Drinks were late, she forgot the second order of drinks, and was basically MIA. Food was mediocre at best. We had a young Latina waitress who was clueless and should not be a server. My Shaking Beef dish was tough/chewy and vegetables were barely cooked. sauce was too salty and had way too much vinegar. I held my nose and tipped the waitress $10 because I felt sorry for her. Our favorite restaurant in Truckee by far. Delicious food period. It's a Tapa style restaurant so food items come out at different times which can be awkward for a larger party because sometimes your food will have a 15+ minute difference when arriving to your table from other members of your party. The service is inconsistent but the servers are always nice. This is typical for Truckee- sad but true. You never know what you will get here. The wait times can be long and they don't take reservations for parties under 5 (I believe) check on this one... but bottom line, it's worth the wait. We haven't had a bad meal. The spicy garlic edamame is crave worthy as is the calamari. We love the rolls and the bowls as well. Not exactly inexpensive but typical for the area. Strong 4 star is for the food but I would say.. the service is a 3 at best. read more

Meeewww, food was bland, i'm not even talking authentic, just it had zero flavour beyond salt. Waitress was rude and didn't really want to be there, she needs to start smiling and listening. And when we wanted to order Hor Fun noodle dish they had run out of Hor Fun and wanted to make it with other noodles. Then she got the order wrong we asked for beef she brought pork and then talked her way out of it by saying the beef would be too spicy for the kids. But just overall, the Singaporean noodles were drowning in oil, and tasted like Maggi Spice only. The Ramen had zero flavour. The wrongly pork dish was dry, the meat itself on top of the rice and vegetables were mostly onion type. Best part was probably the Sake of the whole place since it gave a nice buzz. I wavered between three and four stars for this restaurant, but thought that their COVID precautions bumped them up to the next level. Initially I tried to complete my takeout order on the website, but after my order wouldn't go through I called the restaurant instead. The hostess who answered told me that they don't accept phone in orders at all, and had the website continued not to work, I wouldn't be writing this review at all. Luckily it finally went though after refreshing the page a bunch of times. Pickup for the order was pretty straightforward and easy- they put your name on a whiteboard so that you know when to come inside, rather than congregating inside waiting for your order to be done. The estimated time was right on point and when I got there my food was waiting for me with my name on it- very minimal interaction. Unfortunately I wasn't all that impressed with the sushi. It wasn't BAD, per se- it was just a little lackluster, especially considering the fact that I paid $47 for two rolls (including tip and tax). There were a few pieces of rice that were undercooked which detracted from the rolls. The fish itself was fresh tasting. I think that maybe this place warrants its high pricing for dine-in, where you're paying for the ambiance and service, but for takeout I can't justify that kind of pricing unless it's some crazy spectacular food. read more

The chashu noodle was creative and good and the noodles were perfectly cooked. The only thing I didn't like much was Chashu - the pork. The way they cook it was a bit new to me as it had a sweet taste. The restaurant is right next to a Best Western hotel so If you visit North Tahoe/North Star, I recommmend staying there and just walk over to Drunken Monkey to grab dinner and then 50/50 brewery which is right next door. read more

Sushi was AWESOME! The servers were kind and attentive, but brought our check out right away which was odd and felt a little rushed since we hadn't asked for it and were still eating. She showed up at the table in the middle of the meal with the check in hand and asked "Anything else?". We said no, not really knowing if we'd want anything else but it felt awkward to send her away without accepting the check she was holding. She placed it on the table and left. Strange since the restaurant was almost empty indoors. Why were they eager to get us out? We were only two people, quietly enjoying our lunch. Oh well! Kyushu ramen was a no-go for me. It had NO flavor so I drenched it with soy sauce. Also, never had ramen without a hard boiled egg. I'm from the OC though where the Asian community is huge and wonderful so my standards are high. This was our first time attending this restaurant, and we will not be returning. Very disappointed in the quality of the fish. Sushi should not have remanence of scales stuck to the fish, and the fish should not have a strong fishy taste. I am visiting from out of town and eat sushi at a variety of different restaurants on a regular basis. I have never experienced this lack of quality at an actual sushi restaurant. I have had better quality sushi at our local natural foods store. Also dissatisfied with the service, our entire party felt that because the gratuity was already applied, our servers did not care about the quality of their service. Our waters were never refilled the entire night. There were two dishes brought to the table that we did not order, one of which was applied to our bill. When the dishes were brought to the table, most of them were dropped at the end and we were not told what they were as far as rolls. When we mentioned this to the waitress, she told us that we "needed to be more conscientious about that we ordered." How are we suppose to know what a rolls name is that we have never seen before? The hand rolls were disgusting, again, salmon that tasted unusually fishy, with remanence of scales and very off tasting tempura crab. We had asked the waitress for a to-go box, which was never brought, and we had to go to the hostess for one. The one person at the table with a shellfish allergy, who made this aware to our waitress, and we also made it apparent before reservations. Ordered a roll without any shellfish, ended up having a contamination reaction to her roll. On another note, when I called for clarification before the reservation was made, I was told that the $20 per person deposit would be refunded back to my card, not applied to our bill. This was not the case, when the bill came it was applied. It was not made an option. This wouldn't have been an issue if we had been made aware of it beforehand. Our service and food did not deserve 20% gratuity. As someone who has worked in the high end food industry for the better part of 13 years, in server, manager and chef positions I was appalled. Many of our party has worked in customer service or the restaurant industry, and we are very conscientious of the struggles that come with being in that industry. But much of what we encountered was unnecessary. Especially considering that we were a very easy party, that was not loud, rowdy, demanding or making dozens of alterations/changing orders, and that the venue wasn't busy. I hope that this is discussed with the servers and kitchen staff, and that changes are made. It was a very disappointing experience considering this was a special occasion for our party, and we wish that we had gone somewhere else. read more

Been coming here for a few years and overall, pretty good. I came originally for the sushi - which is pretty quality! Clean and easy. I've tried a few other things that I like - Hamachi kama is always a fave and so is the teriyaki chicken. Recently I tried one of their pho dishes and the donburi, and honestly... just wasn't impressed at all, unfortunately. At least post pandemic. Their menu seemed to have changed just a bit.
