We stopped into Masa Kitchen for lunch for the first time today and really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. I had the Shrimp tacos, and my husband had one Pibil Taco and one Birria taco. All were very fresh and flavorful, the side salsas were delicious, and the handmade corn tortillas are amazing. My husband also appreciated the full bar and enjoyed a specialty rye whisky drink. The menu is quite extensive for a small restaurant (tacos, tapas, pizza by the slice or full pizzas, salads, soup, burgers) so it's a place you can go with a group and everyone should be able to find something they like to eat. We will definitely be returning to try some of the other menu items in the future. Highly recommended! read more

We stopped here on the way from a nearby hike to Tahoe and it was wonderful. We did check out some local shops nearby as well, which was fun. As we were passing Masa, someone leaving the restaurant said it was awesome and that we should try it, so we did! No regrets at all. My husband loved his breakfast burrito and I loved my seasonal salad with crispy prosciutto. I also had an amazing berry mojito, which was so refreshing after a long hike. Service was great as well! Spring weekend between snow season and summer activities, we went for an early dinner to this quaint restaurant. Located In the heart of downtown Truckee. I had the soup of the day, meatball soup, Pork tacos, and shared a "make your own"pizza. Mostly meat toppings. Nice selection of beer choices including a few on tap. I went during a non-holiday weeknight and it was nice actually finding a parking spot in downtown Truckee without tons of people. I am a big sourdough pizza crust fan and the pizza felt light and not greasy. If that's your preference too, I would definitely recommend! (I had the margarita pizza) I also had the Caesar salad which surprised me how good it was for a pizza place, with real Parmesan shavings and everything. The only thing that was surprising was the service attentiveness with it being a a slower night and plenty of staff. They were friendly, however, so that was great and I enjoyed the atmosphere as well! read more

I have been wanting to try this place out since it opened. I finally got to last night. We had just come from Folsom area for a weekend regatta. We were pretty tired from the weekend and it was so nice to come in and be helped right away. I didn't get the name of our server, but he was the only one there. He was super sweet and helpful. I love that they don't use seed oils, their use tallow in their fryer (so healthy) and they have real sourdough for their pizzas. The burger was really good and my son enjoyed his birria tacos. I love that there is a variety of things to choose from, I can feel great about eating there because I know the food is cleaner than most and they have a full bar. I really loved Best Pies and came here tonight for the first time since the change. While the food was fantastic, the music was so loud it was frankly unbearable and made it impossible to maintain a conversation without yelling and lots of repeating. Between the music and the free range children, the acoustics made it an absolute sensory nightmare. I appreciate the staff, the good service, and loved the new menu, but definitely don't recommend dining in (at least while it's busy). Honestly I'm giving them 4 stars but I'd say more like a 3.6, I'll round up on this one. We were seated and service started out pretty good. We ordered sodas and they came fast then there was a hit of a wait to place our order. Looked like our server was playing double duty as the bartender but we were at a table not the bar. We ordered their Avalanche Pizza. 16" pizza sort of like a combo. Pizza came out at a reasonable amount of time but we were almost done eating before our server came back to refill our drinks. We had sat there for maybe 10 minutes with empty glasses. The pizza was tasty but their "New York Style" crust is a very thin almost cracker like crust. It has a good flavor and they add lots of toppings...to the point the crust does not hold up. Ended up eating most of my toppings off my plate with a fork. When I attempted to "fold" my slice to eat it, it broke in half and the toppings all fell off. Don't get me wrong...this could have been a solid 4 star maybe even 5 but the slow to refill drinks is a big pet peeve of mine. Overall nice place, I'd give it another try. As someone who makes sourdough pizza at home and deeply respects the craft, I walked into Masa Kitchen with high hopes. Unfortunately, I left disappointed. When you charge $29 for a cheese pizza (create your own + fresh buffalo mozzarella + basil) you are pricing yourself into the artisan category, and the product needs to back that up. This didn't. The Dough: The menu claims "sourdough pizza," implying a natural leavening process. However, any pizzaiolo can tell you that simply adding a spoonful of discard to a commercial yeast dough doesn't make it "sourdough." True sourdough has a complex crumb structure, a specific chew, and a signature tangy depth of flavor. This crust felt rushed and one-dimensional. It seems "sourdough" is being used here as a marketing buzzword rather than a fermentation method. The Ingredients: I ordered the pizza with Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella (Mozzarella di Bufala). This is a premium ingredient known for its tangy, rich, and creamy interior. What arrived on my pizza was standard mozzarella. The difference in texture and flavor profile is massive. The Execution: The pizza was shockingly greasy and overly salty, lacking balance. What Could Improve: * Menu Transparency: If you are using a hybrid dough (yeast + starter), say so. Don't sell it as pure sourdough. If you are serving standard mozzarella, do not list it as fresh buffalo mozzarella. * Fermentation: The dough needs a longer cold ferment to develop the structure and flavor you are advertising. * Balance: Dial back the salt in the dough or sauce, and source a cheese with a lower fat-to-moisture ratio to prevent the grease pool on top. Visited Masa Kitchen for date night this week, and had a great dinner & drinks. We ordered the cauliflower cakes, Asian udon salad, and margarita pizza with added anchovies and capers. Everything was really tasty, creative presentation, and fun twists on old favorites. Reminded us a bit of Dragonfly's offerings, in sense of "off the beaten path" menu options, when they were open (our old favorite in Truckee :). We're vegan/veg, and thought there were plenty of options for us. Our friendly and helpful server helped with specialty drink suggestions. 5 stars all around, we'll be back!
