One of our first port calls was in Newport, so after touring some of the historic homes in the area, finding shoes was job #1. I was warned by locals that there weren't many shoe stores in town and those that were around were $$$$. That was certainly my initial experience when looking at the touristy Bowen's Wharf area. Fortunately, I found Sole Desire and their clearance rack. Nice selection of shoes from a variety of quality brands and bingo, I actually found the perfect replacement sandals at 50% off. The employees were lovely and grabbed multiple options for me to try on and I was on my way.

AND SLIPPERS!" So, I walked right back to the window full of shoes that inspired her wish, and walked through the door. Irving himself, I assume, was there cobbling a pair of shoes (I think he does a lot of shoe and zipper repairs). I wove through the many piles of shoes and other items and found a pair of pink, flowered, light-up sneakers for my daughter as well as a pair of fuzzy puppy slippers that I knew she would love to receive. Fast forward to Christmas: she was thrilled. Wears the sneaks all the time. The puppy slippers were too small. Luckily, Irving let me know during our conversation as I explored his shop that if the slippers didn't fit, I could certainly return them and he will happily get us the right size. When I get back to town, I will do so! Final note: the owner was so friendly and went above and beyond as far as customer service and engagement. He was delightful to chat with as I shopped. Makes me want to keep shopping locally at this tiny, chaotic, and lovely shoe store.

I like them so much I'm keeping them, however. I don't know if this sizing standard applies to any of their other men's tops. I tend to think not, as I have noted wonky sizing in Indian madras shirts from another retailer and I suspect it is due to to the manufacturers in India having different standards than US. I also have a pair of their madras board shorts, and I'd say it fits true to size. Having said all this, Kiel James Patrick is extremely generous and lightning-fast in making exchanges, as long as clothing is unworn, unwashed, and with all tags remaining on the garment and received writhin the deadline. Some people consider this brand to be very expensive; I find them to cost less than some competitors, however, which is very pleasing and figured in my buying decision. I just gotta close with a shout-out to their packaging: The elaborate box and inside wrapping will blow you away and ensures your product arrives without wrinkles or any sort of damage from shipping.

Came into the store earlier today because a lobster crewneck caught my eye. The woman (presumably…read morethe owner) was preoccupied yelling at a woman and her family regarding a pair of sandals she was attempting to return a year after the return period lapsed. While the shoes were clearly worn (as the soles were scuffed and dirty) the owner became irate. When I approached the counter, crewneck in hand, she sharply asked me what I wanted. Then proceeded to yell that she had already told my grandmother she can't help. Confused, I informed her I did not know the people attempting to return the shoes. She apologized for the confusion and began checking me out. The woman with the worn shoes and the owner continued to argue with each other. When the customer asked the owner her name she replied, "none of your goddamn business, what's yours?" She threatened to call the cops multiple times on the customers. She kept walking away from the cash register where my friend and I were awkwardly waiting, telling me she thought they were going to steal. While the customer and her family began to exit the owner exclaimed, "f*ck you!" While the owner's anger was not directed at me, the interaction made me feel incredibly uncomfortable.
