What a friendly shop! My daughter takes dance classes a few doors down and when I was dropping her off at the studio just before Christmas, she exclaimed, "I want shoes for Christmas! AND SLIPPERS!" So, I walked right back to the window full of shoes that inspired her wish, and walked through the door. Irving himself, I assume, was there cobbling a pair of shoes (I think he does a lot of shoe and zipper repairs). I wove through the many piles of shoes and other items and found a pair of pink, flowered, light-up sneakers for my daughter as well as a pair of fuzzy puppy slippers that I knew she would love to receive. Fast forward to Christmas: she was thrilled. Wears the sneaks all the time. The puppy slippers were too small. Luckily, Irving let me know during our conversation as I explored his shop that if the slippers didn't fit, I could certainly return them and he will happily get us the right size. When I get back to town, I will do so! Final note: the owner was so friendly and went above and beyond as far as customer service and engagement. He was delightful to chat with as I shopped. ***WARNING to fellow customers*** get a written or at least verbal cost estimate. I got a cheap thin rubber sole put on the front (only) of brand new boots and when I went to pick them up he charged $100 dollars. That's approx 3 times the normal price for a front rubber sole. ***Also, I requested a price estimate when dropping them off and he declined to give me one! I queried the price when picking up and he just said that's what it costs. Extortion! I was in a rare instance of needing a cobbler and was pleasantly surprised to find a few in the area. I had two pairs of shoes with the soles falling apart and gave the shop a call. Stuart spoke with me for a bit and even though he wasn't hopeful that the shoes could be repaired (due to brand and the cause of damage), he asked that I still bring them in for a visual inspection. Even though the shoes were beyond repair I still had a pleasant experience with the shop. The owner seems very knowledgeable about shoes and knew all the common issues with various brands and was able to make several recommendations for replacement shoes. He even gave me a free shoe shine for the pair I was wearing. I'll definitely be back to utilize his show restoration and repairs. read more

This place single handedly rescued my favorite pair of black leather boots! This was my first time getting a pair of shoes repaired by a shoe cobbler. My boots were falling apart, and I wasn't ready to just throw them out just yet so I was on a mad search for someone to fix them up. The shoe cobbler there was so cheery and friendly and willing to help me out. He did an amazing job: replaced the heels, added a gripped rubber sole, and polished them up to be shiny! Bought a new pair of tall leather boots but because of my high instep I couldn't get them on my feet. I brought them into Irving's Shoe and Stuart immediately diagnosed the problem and succesfully stretched the leather to match my foot. Dropped them off in the morning and picked them up in the afternoon the same day. Very reasonably priced services, extremely casual/friendly atmosphere. I've been coming here for years, generally for repairs of one kind or another and I've had nothing but friendly and prompt service EVERY time. If you need to get your shoes repaired, here the place too go. After twenty plus years of putting up with poor service in Newport and Bristol, it is a relief to find a great cobbler. You drop off on Wednesday and the owner calls you a few days later and presto-nicely done. Nice shoes there as well, though limited inventory. read more

Sometimes you come across a business that just brings you back to the "good old days", where owners are personable, deliver great service, truly care about their craft, and do it all it a great price. Irving's Shoe Store is one of those rare finds. I brought in 6 sailing jackets that needed new zippers, and rather than the "eye rolls" I got other places, my request was met with a smile, an assurance it would be done on time, and at a cost that seemed reminiscent of the 1980's. Stuart, the manager, called me when the order was ready (earlier, btw, than what he promised), and followed up afterward to make sure I was satisfied. Monday morning I brought in a 10 year old WORN pair of Frye boots in to Irvings and by Monday afternoon I received a called my boots were ready. When I picked up my boots I practically had a tear in my eye because my 10 year old beat up boots were brand new! This man works magic!! read more

Took a new pair of shoes (ladies size 7) to have a thin rubber sole put on. Almost fell to the floor when quoted a price of $55.00. Went elsewhere and was charged a very fair price of $20.00 for exceptional quality of work. I am so happy to know there are good people doing good work at fair prices (unlike this business).
