Located on Union Square south, this has a lot and not a lot at the same time... went looking for a roll of halls or cough drops... and they didn't have anything outside of bigger bags. Found and talked to two staffers and both were rushing around, not really friendly about the reply but at least pointed me to the approximately right area to look. Security upfront that was properly keeping a guy whose pants were falling off and bag of trash from going further into the store. Pretty deep to get to the Pharmacy in the back, bend around the other corner store. read more

I should know because these guys are the master of the snaking checkout aisle that can satisfy most "impulse purchase urges" of any New Yorker. Do you know that your eyes have no red blood cells, well they don't. The real world translation for me = no prescription coming my way for pain medication. As I was crashing around in the aspirin area like a spinning top loosing its momentum, a very sweet sales associate approached me. She was very knowledgeable about ibuprofen, Tylenol and explained in detail her opinion of which product too purchase and how/when to properly ingest. She stayed with me throughout my other few purchases possibly figuring I was a prime candidate for taking out a stack of properly set and balanced aisle caps. The price appeared to be a touch higher than I expected, but I didn't bother with the math as pain relief was a handful of Motrin IB, get really tummy. read more

This is your standard Duane Reade with a phamracy and other hosuehokd goods like food, cleaning products, and toiletries. It's dimmer than other places or even compared to the Walgreens across the street which makes it feel somewhat gloomy? I don't know but I expect these stores to be brightly lit. I came here once with my hands full because I couldn't find a shopping basket or cart by the entrance and when I finallh came across a sales associate and asked where the baskets were, he said 'i don't know.' Seriously?? In this entire store, on a somewhat early Saturday morning where there weren't that many patrons using and misplacing baskets yet, and you don't know where I can get a basket?!?! The second most overpriced but slick looking Duane Reade I know of. It's a nice place to browse and they do maintain it well but I couldn't in good conscience pay the inflated prices they charge at this one compared to other merchants for food & beverages. Selection, as far as I can tell, is okay but if I wanted to pay a ton of money for stuff from Duane Reade, I could just go to the one on Wall Street. It's easy to feel overwhelmed here though a little harder to get lost in this one. read more

I love drugstores. I have been known to kill an hour in Walgreens. When I saw a shiny new DR pop up outside the park, I couldn't resist taking a stroll inside. To my surprise, it's only one floor. It's nicely laid out and easy to navigate. DR's product selection seems to be getting better lately. I saw lots of yummy to-go food...even a mini Rice-to-Riches. They also had a whole freezer of Amy's frozen meals. The place was clean, well lit and stocked. Hopefully it will continue to stay that way! read more

Wasted my time by not filling rx Dr. sent in. There was some issue but they never notified Dr.s office or me, just denied having the rx after I waited in line 20 min at least. Then, after saying no we dont have it I call Dr. and they insist it is there. Get back in line and wait. Finally they admit they got the rx, blah, blah which they could have said a week ago to the Dr. Never again. Also they ask your dob and other private information in front of everyone. Needless privacy cluelessness. Cvs does same. They could use the phone number or have a touch screen, but as usual lay people are telling them how to be efficient and inoffensive at their business but apparently they don't want to be successful, have return customers. Maybe they think they are a monopoly, don't need to respect customers. Screw them. read more

I can't believe I'm writing a review for yet another pharmacy, but why not? This Duane Reade is pretty sweet. There's only one floor, but that's ok. I still found it pretty spacious, with lots of aisles of goodies that you can find in a drugstore. There was a pretty big food section, and it looked so enticing, with all the lights! And you can also sneak to the back of the store where the pharmacy is to pay for your items in case you don't want to battle the lines at the front of the store. Great location (right in Union Square) AND it's 24 hours. read more

Recent visit has entice me with their remodel atmospheric overall look which includes a bakery, freshly prepared foods and a small fruit selection. Two checkout lines make this Duane Reade very efficient during peak hours. Cashiers are not always focused as they are in a complete daze when I already shown my Duane Reade rewards card and requested it THREE bloody times. read more

I bought about 5 items here and about 20 seconds later as I was walking down the stairs to the subway the bag ripped open and everything fell out, apparently because they gave me a bag with a hole in it. I gathered up my stuff along with my receipt and went back into the store to ask them to rebag my items. I went to a different cashier than the one who checked me out because she was busy and the other cashier didn't have a line or anyone she was checking out. I put my stuff on the counter along with my receipt and told her that I had been there about a minute ago and my bag completely ripped open and everything fell out, and asked if she would mine double-bagging my items. She looked completely annoyed with me and rolled her eyes, and asked "You want double bags?" in the most irritated-sounding tone ever. I told her yes, and said she was free to check my receipt so she could see I had purchased all those items literally a minute prior. She proceeded to check my receipt not once, not twice, not three times, but four times! Each receipt check was complete with eye-rolling, a pissed off expression, and absolutely nothing being said to me. Listen, cashier-douche, if I was trying to steal my grand total of 5 things, I wouldn't walk up to you and ask you to bag them. Then she stalled in the bagging, looking back and forth from the bags to my items, to the receipt. More eye-rolling. When she finally got around to putting the items in the bags, she was about to put the receipt in and hand me the bag, but then told me "HOLD ON" and looked at the receipt AGAIN. I found it to be excessive and rude, and she didn't bother apologizing for the store giving me a bag with a hole in it that couldn't even last for 30 seconds. When she finally decided to hand me the bag with all the crap I had purchased, I told her "Thank you so much!" No response, so I told her "Thank you!" again. Still, she said nothing to me. So I told her "Have a nice day!" Her reply? "Mhmm." Then I just finally said "Ok, nevermind. Thanks for being rude." Seriously, what a bitch. This isn't the first time the staff here has been rude to me. I don't care how big and shiny this particular location is -- I'm not coming back. read more

I'm blown away at the level of customer service from this pharmacy. In the past two months, I've spent as much time in NYC as I have in my hometown, Austin. I needed to get a medicine refilled and I wanted to get if done at a 24 hour pharmacy, so I had it called in here. My doctor's office didn't call the prescription in to the right pharmacy the first time, so I had to make 2 trips here. This was back in March. The same woman happened to assist me both times. She remembered me. I couldn't believe that. That, to me, showed remarkable customer service. She also struck up a conversation with me while looking for my prescription. She provided one-on-one care while not coming across as fake and while not holding up the line. The wonderful service that I received on my trip in March led me to head back to this location when I needed something on this trip - approximately 1 month after my last visit to the pharmacy. The same woman was there - and still remembered me, and noticed the kinda subtle change in my hair color! This kind of service makes me feel at home. I highly recommend this location and will be returning. read more

I discovered this morning that Duane Reade not only has a pharmacy but an actual walk in health clinic. My boyfriend had flu symptoms and needed to go to a doctor...not the easiest feat at 9am on a Sunday. We googled walk in clinics (much to my dismay) but instead of finding sketchy clinics we found a nearby Duane Reade offering basic health services (flu shots, strep throat testing, et cetera). We got there at 10:20 and were out with his Rx's in hand at 11:00. This is a more than ideal substitute for seeing your general practitioner when you are in a jam. The service was so quick and efficient and the facility was extremely clean. read more

Duane Reade, I love you. Can't beat the 24 hours schedule. Mostly I stick to sale items because price wise they are not to friendly. Also, I notice that the later the night gets, the weirder the employees. But whatever, I'm not looking to get into a full blown convo with them anyway. The store itself always seems clean and the staff have always been fine. This is more about the pharmacy - I made an appointment for a vaccine and showed up 15 minutes early to fill out the forms, as they requested. Fine. I could see everyone in the pharmacy working hard, but it was just understaffed. I waited for an hour until I actually got the shot. Pretty ridiculous. read more

Beautiful new store, but when shopping here, beware. They steal your rewards points. I made a purchase and told the guy that I wanted to redeem my 506 points for a coupon to use towards my purchase that day. I didn't have my card, so the guy asked for my phone number and found me right away. The jerk cashier made over 400 of my points disappear, and then got aggravated when I asked him what happened to my points. This guys calls the manager over to help. Andy, the manager was of course no help either. He told me that he basically couldn't fix my problem, but to call corporate. I know a $5 dollar coupon shouldn't be much to complain about, but its the thought that counts, right? I guess I am just out of points now, and have to start all over again. smh read more

This Duane Reade is racist. They only follow black people!! I really hate that I been coming to this Duane Reade for over 5 years . I only come here for one thing only and that's tampons. Sometimes I run out and can't wait for delivery so I have to come here. It's the most uncomfortable feeling . They make it obvious they watching you and will keep circling the aisle. Wow, Duane Reade, WOW! Most of your stores generally leave a sour taste in my mouth after I dash in to quickly grab what my body is craving, and dash back out. Not here though!! As soon as the doors opened for me, I felt as if I was walking into arrivals at a shiny brand new airport. I almost expected somebody to be waving excitedly at me! I brought myself back down to earth, remembering that this IS a Duane Reade after all. As I mentioned above, Duane Reade for me is always like a timed competition. How fast can I get it and get out? And can I beat my previous record? So you'll understand my confusion when I decided to BROWSE. Browse at a Duane Reade??!? Yes, my friends. Browse. The aisles were clear and wide; the shelves stocked to capacity. After I quickly found my powerbar and water, I headed for the checkout, still anticipating a longish wait. NOT HERE! No sir! This just may have to do with the fact that they've got not one, but two separate lines on either side of the entry way to speed up checkout! And both sides were open! Anytime I find myself on Union Square, sans-farmer's market and thirsty, this is where I will end up! read more

What a fantastic drug store! We don't have Duane Reade in Canada, and I have to say I was very impressed with this place! There are so many options here, they have a fantastic selection of cosmetics, things we definitely don't have in Canada. I picked up 2 nail polish colors that I had never seen before an they were a fraction of the price I've seen them sell for in Canada. Not only can you pick up snacks, hair care product and everything else under the sun there is a spot to fill your growler up with beer (ummm yes!). i wish we were able to do this in Canada. There were tons of different types of beers which makes this store so much more fantastic. Dear Canadians, shop here. It's so much cheaper, you can get beer and there is tons of variety. This new Duane Reade that opened where Virgin Megastore used to be is actually very convenient. They have a really wide variety of stuff, from quick cook meals to the obvious junk food and drinks, and all the other items you might expect to find in a drug store. Now granted you pay a premium for those items cause you're in a store in prime real estate, but that is the price of convenience I guess. Oh and go in to one of these stores late at night at least once. You will surely see some scene or other, people fighting, drunken people causing trouble, and the quirky characters that work the night shift! read more

I never thought that I would *ever* review a Duane Reade, but given the fact that this location keeps their pharmacy open and that the pharmacist is both helpful and pleasant, I am ending up writing a review. Normally when I am in NY I get my prescriptions filled at the Duane Reade near Borough Hall in Brooklyn, but they were closed for some reason and I had to get some scripts filled. I had been in the 14th Street Duane Reade once before for some shopping, and I do like the 1-floor/ well lighted layout. They have a well stocked grocery section and they sell a nice selection of beer as well. This time I went right back to the pharmacy counter, hoping for the best. The pharmacist on duty, Marina, was very nice and quickly filled my scripts with very little trouble. Unfortunately, one refill was already at the other Duane Reade, so there was no way of getting that script, but still the overall experience was pleasant and rapid. I may decide to change pharmacies! read more

Seriously, why do they offer passport photos as a service as every time I ask them for them they say "the tech isn't here today, go across the street to Walmart." I mean really, the tech? I'm not having an MRI done, you're taking a freaking digital photo and printing it. now, i know i'm not a patient person. clumsy? yes. friendly? perhaps. normal? any day now... however, i do find myself wondering quite a bit if my standards are really too high ... or if people are just THAT stupid. seriously, it's very difficult to judge when your baseline is NYC - a striking combination of the devastatingly brilliant and intellectually-confused ... all crammed into a 22.7 square mile island. enter duane reade, union square. seemingly genius in its conception - a spacious, well-lit, open-24-hours-a-day one-stop-shop for all your last-minute needs, located in the heart of manhattan. need condoms? maple-leaf cookies? a doctor that can prescribe you drugs that get you out of work vs. back in? done. done ... and done. however, as wonderful as it sounds, the masterminds behind the new gorgeous layout must have been thinking to themselves, "if we can distract all those NYers with our new space, then maybe they won't pay any attention to our staff ... where being useless is a pre-requisite for employment." cue the evil laugh. argh. is it really too much to expect that the man at the pharmacy not fall asleep while i sign my papers? that the doctor not look pissy when i ask her to re-take my blood pressure? that the women behind the counter not roll their eyes when i question what time my prescription will be ready? really? Did you know Duane Reade has walk-in clinics?! Neither did I! I suddenly became ill earlier in the week and since it was late in the day I was unable to see a doctor or specialist at my regular offices. I thought I should go to Urgent Care but having never been before I called my insurance company to check my benefits coverage for that (daughter of an insurance claims examiner here...I know all the loop holes!). My insurance rep told me I had much better coverage for a walk-in clinic than for urgent care and suggested I go there first. What the heck is a walk-in clinic? (Disclaimer- I'm a therapist, what I call a walk-in clinic is very different than what an insurance company calls a walk-in clinic). Thus I discovered that Duane Reade and other pharmacies have actual medical clinics, with doctors, nurse practitioners, and PA's on staff just sitting there waiting to see me on a drop-in basis. WHAT?! And it's 100% covered by my insurance with a low co-pay? Shut up! So that's how I ended up at the Union Square walk-in clinic on a random weekday early evening talking to two wonderful medical professionals who were fantastic. The doctor was super professional, extremely knowledgeable and had a terrific bedside manner. Her medical assistant was equally pleasant and professional. Once I got passed my own (*completely childish and kinda snobby and I really should know better but I was sick and not at my best*) hang ups about being at a clinic in a Duane Reade, I could focus on the fact these women were professionals and providing a really important service! I was sick and needed medicine stat and here were two very professional women who knew their stuff and were working late in less than glamorous settings and didn't give a hoot about that because they were there to heal people and make them feel better. RIGHT ON! The world needs more of that. And p.s. a friend of mine noted that once upon a time it was the norm to seek medical attention at a pharmacy and the more I think about it, it makes a lot of sense! The doctor did a thorough exam and prescribed antibiotics which she was able to send to the pharmacy in store. The medicine was ready in about fifteen minutes. I perused the fancy make up/skin care aisle (they carry Dr. Hauschka Rose Cream - J. Lo's fave!) while I waited for my medicine. The medicine worked quickly and I was feeling better within three days. I'm so grateful to know these clinics exist! I will not hesitate to consider this option should I ever fall suddenly ill ever again. read more

This is a pretty solid Duane Reade. Prices are okay and it's spacious and organized. They have a lot of products and I can usually find what I need here, from wrapping paper to mascara. It's also in a super location at Union Square. The line does get long, but it moves pretty quickly because they usually have 3 or 4 cashiers on hand. This is way better than other Duane Reades that sometimes only have 1 or 2 cashiers working at a time! read more
