Sheesh. This place has changed. Bonnie's Cafe, the greasy spoon of amazing breakfasts is gone, and is now a game room. The popcorn? Also gone but the Heggies is still being served and it still smells amazing. There are daily beer specials and live music happening. I like this place, parking lot is easy and since I last wrote a review of this place, University Avenue is getting cleaned up as is the clientele. A couple of tables of ladies hanging out this Thursday evening and the Vikings game is on all the TV's, which just so happens to be two, one in each room. This is no longer the bar of yore, but the old school feel is still there as that "age" and "comfyness", like a well worn hoodie, just cannot be replicated in newer establishments. read more

This bar is very Irish, which is exactly what it is trying to be. The drinks are good. There isn't much for food, just bar pizza and some pretzels. We were there around 7:00 on a Friday night. When we got there there was a table full of people playing instruments together. It seemed like just a casual community get together, and was really lovely. An official band was scheduled to play around 9:00pm, but we didn't stay that late. The bar is pretty good sized and the tables are not too close. The vibe is dive bar, Irish bar. Service was fast and friendly, though there didn't seem to be table service, so you ordered at the bar. There was one, maybe two people working when we were there. The parking lot is very small, then there is street parking. The prices were reasonable, with our two drinks and pizza coming to about $35. When we first got there it was pretty quiet, but it got much louder by 7:30pm. There was quite the mix of people there. Young and old, regulars and newbies, it was a fun crowd. There is an outdoor seating area, but it doubles as the smoking area and there are only 2-3 tables. A fun place to go. read more

This is one of those dive bars that just does it right. Stopped in to see the live music that they often feature. They had an excellent guitarist playing covers in their corner stage - good volume where you could be immersed in the front or still chat with your table in the back of the bar or the game room. The bartender was fast and friendly, even joking back and forth with the guitarist which made for some good laughs. Their game room is really their biggest asset - for a dive bar their are plenty good wastes of time including darts, pool, pinball, and a collection of board games. They offer some local seasoned pretzels and the usual run of the mill bags of chips but often have a food truck parked outside as well. I continue to pray this place keeps its authentic and great local feel - no better place to relax! read more

This place is a low key gem of Saint Paul. Do yourself a favor and stop in on your next venture near Vandalia. The whiskey collection is authentic and true to the lush lands of Ireland. Complete with Teeling, Powers and Tullamore Dew to just name a few. We had a small bar group and took a seat right when we walked in. John the bartender greeted two of us who arrived early and i ordered an iced tea. We ordered the fish and chips per recommendation. It arrived hot and fresh with house-made tartar and a lemon. The cod was succulent and lightly battered while the fries were crispy with just enough seasoning salt. The seasoning on the cod was light which I appreciated and the batter on the fish resembles the consistency of tempura batter. The staff does seem super relaxed and meets basic needs of service. But nothing over the top. So although the food was outstanding, I had to give 4 stars. read more

I had no expectations coming here, I find that's the easiest way to go into things. It was an all-around hoot! We went in on a Tuesday night because some out of town friends wanted to check out the Irish Set Dancing. A great little band was set up and a small group gathered to set dance the night away. My friend participated, but I was content to observe and take in the people and the pub. We dove into some fish and chips and beverages. The food was hot and was tasty, which sometimes can be a hit and miss at a dive bar. I knocked it back with a Magners Irish Cider which was stellar. This is a seat yourself place with a dark interior and the love for the Kennedys is proudly displayed on the walls. Had some great conversations here, and in the land of MN nice, that is REALLY hit and miss (this coming from a transplant). There's a patio out back, but it's a wee bit smoky. So if that is not to your liking, you'll want to sit inside. read more

Cute little pub! So after partaking in yoga and a pint at Lake Monster Brewing my girlfriends and I needed sustenance! The Dubliner was super close by since we couldn't wait for the food truck to make it to the brewery. Check in on Yelp and get a free cup of coffee! Perfect! Plus the cups were on sweet little paper doilies! Since it was March and we were in a pub I chose the corned beef hash special with eggs and toast. Pretty hilarious they were out of the mainstay toast choices so I got cranberry wild rice toast. Excellent choice! That cranberry wild rice toast was the perfect ending to over easy eggs on top of some damn good hash! Really great flavors and diner taste! The restaurant was quaint and cozy with wood booths and an old world pub and diner combo feel. I definitely want to stop back for happy hour or dinner sometime soon! read more

Second time here for their Full Irish. It's closer than the other spots that have Full Breakfasts, so instead of schlepping out to Morrissey's or Anchor, I stopped by today. This is just a review of their Full Irish - I haven't ordered anything else off their menu, though I have stopped in for a beer. Firstly, there are better options in the Twin Cities. Secondly, it's not really what you would call authentic. More like US Chinese restaurants' approximation of Chinese cuisine. Or Mexican vs Tex-Mex. Close, but not right on. No rashers, American bacon instead. Hash browns. American baked beans, not the milder Heinz variety served in the UK. They did have black pudding slices, but it was hard to taste them because they were VERY well done. The banger was pretty close - but again, it was a spicier variety, more like a brat than a proper banger. So, it filled me up, but wasn't a real Full Breakfast. If you're looking for authenticity in your Full Brekkie, hit up Morrissey's or Anchor (the former holds the title). read more

Plenty of seating, good place to meet people and enjoy a pint. If you need to light a candle for your favorite Irish author, they have a shrine there. Beat up chairs and tables (typical Irish Bar stuff). Big Bar. Laconic bar tender. Live music some nights. You can watch the Viking game (one projection TV, not awesome picture). This place is classic. Love this bar. They have free popcorn and darts. Also a large screen playing any game and a stage for live Irish music. Pretty cool. They have a patio in the back which is nice in the summer. The inside is classic for a Irish pub. Cool retro bar and large area for seating. I haven't been here in nearly twenty years, and right now, I surely don't regret it. We stopped in for lunch, since they bought the cafe next door, I did think they had regular lunch service in the cafe. They do not. They serve food in the bar. You have to order at the bartender, which doesn't make sense, because it was quite busy. He was really struggling to keep up, and it took us quite a while to order. It also took quite a while to get our food. We ordered two grilled cheese sandwiches, and onion rings. I didn't expect that it would take as long as it did. The grilled cheese sandwich was quite small, and was very plain. No choice of bread, or cheese. Their menu does NOT match the menu they have posted online. Unfortunately, the things we were planning on ordering were not on the actual menu when we got here. When we asked, we were told, "Not today!" So, which day then? They do deserve a star for the onion rings. They were great! Very unique flavor. I would've preferred if they were served hotter, but they were excellent. read more

Authentic Authentic Authentic Irish Pub This had to be said 3 times because it is critical to the review. Once a week, there is an Irish jig night. Let me paint a picture. The entire bar will stand up and one person will go in the middle of the restaurant and sing and Irish limerick while the rest sing the chorus while swaying. This will go on for hours. Don't side: You may need to go directly to the bar, even if you have a table to order food, but everyone gets involved. You will not get the best service, but what you will get: 1. Great Irish food that will leave your stomach happy and make you forget your diet for the night. 2. Entertainment. Even the bar tenders had strong Irish accents 3. A good cold pint or two 4. Outdoor patio in the back (Note: Folks do smoke, so if this bothers you, sit inside 5. Open seating (don't expect a host). You may need to jump on a table because it can get crowded in the evenings. Located on University, this place is hard to miss. Owned by Jewish Catholics, there's a shrine of JFK all over the walls, which is fun to look at once you've had a few, but creepy initially lol Ricky served our beverages last night and did a wonderful job at maintaining the bar. He had wonderful energy, and explained a bit of the history of this place (hence, me knowing it's owned by Jewish Catholics) I'm not sure if mentioning that is offensive, but he made an emphasis on it as if it was an important part of the story. He also used that reason to explain the JFK shrine. The vibe is chill, and a great place to meet with buddy's and chat. read more

Thanks to Steve T who got together some funky Yelp friends to experience Dubliner's Right Track Soul Night! Right Track Soul Night is the first Friday of each month, and is free to show up at 9pm and throw your body around to some 60's vinyl. I was excited when I saw on Yelp that there's a private parking lot, but at 9pm it was filled up. I had to circle around several times since there's no street parking around, until a spot opened up. Enter through the back of the building where you will be carded inside. The interior is fun and divey - lots of character and characters! There's a bar area with stools and several assorted tables with seating. I saw different displays and memorabilia including old bicycles and hardcover books. And I really love the neon sign of the old establishment. The crowd was super diverse - friendly people of every age. Call drinks are $6.50 each I believe. There's a popcorn machine too, but I was disappointed that it wasn't running that night. Or maybe I was relieved, because I can make myself ILL with all of the popcorn I can cram down my gullet. Especially with a gin gimlet to wash it down. The tracks came on and the tables were moved to make for a dance floor. People were getting down with their bad selves (as my dad would say), yet it wasn't too crowded or loud for our group to enjoy conversation. Such a fun Friday night! read more

Ok so this was my second time here as my first time here was a bit hectic (I was here during St. Patrick's Day weekend). Now coming here on a non Irish holiday I was able to experience the food, drink, and atmosphere on a normal day. When I came in there was only bar services o I just sat myself up at the bar and put in my order with the bartender who was friendly and seemed to be making good conversation with the patrons. I ordered myself a pint of Guinness, the obvious choice in my opinion. The bartender knew exactly what he was doing, when I got my Gunniess the foamy head was spot on resulting in that perfect signature dome shape. And of course my pint came in the signature Guinness glass. For the food I ordered a Shepherd's Pie, and my very first! I loved that it was served in a small clay pot vessel, so it was pretty hot. My first Shepherd's Pie was yummy. The mashed potatoes on the top were cooked nicely, and made great with that melted cheese. The mash on the inside was really nothing too surprising, tasted exactly as I expected it to, ground beef and lamb with mixed veg in a tomato light sauce. But I was very happy that when I dug into my dish and exposed the delicious mash underneath the potatoes, that I was hit with a great woof of lamb. That made me smile as a Shepherd's Pie should have lamb in it and the fact that the lamb was the dominate scent and taste in this pie proves that this was a pretty authentic Shepherd's Pie and not a Cottage Pie. Overall I was quite pleased with the service here and my meal. I definitely enjoyed my pint of Guinness and will try to stop by again for another and also get me some Irish Whiskey! read more

(Note: Reviewed at three stars due to only one visit, and only to drink) This was a pretty decent spot to spend St. Patrick's Day this year, and it's just a $6 Uber ride from O'Garas (if you're out and about on the 17th). Despite being quite busy, I didn't have to wait too long for a pint of Guinness, as they tried to keep multiple cups lined up, setting at the bar. If you're a Guinness snob like me (I mean, I do hold an official Perfect Pint Poured certificate), you know the key to the perfect pint is the settling. I was impressed with Dubliner. Usually when demand is high on St. Pats (and even not high at other places) the pint is not allowed to settle, and thus the Guinness doesn't reach its full potential. Now that the Guinness lecture is out of the way, back to the review: overall I was very impressed with the service despite the crowd. Will add more stars as I come back and try food. read more

Our second visit to the Dubliner Cafe for breakfast on Sunday 11/13/16. The restaurant was cold minimal heat. The egg dish we had in our first visit per our waitress was taken off the menu because it took to long to prepare. My hash browns were starch laden and stringy. Wild rice toast was the highlight. Disappointing that this Cafe had so much potential when it replaced Bonnie's but it is now very generic in its offerings and service. Came back today. The food (veggie omelette) was excellent. The space was warmer and more welcoming. Quirky waitress but she is young. All in all I think they have gotten the kinks out. A good choice. read more

Stopped in for a Saturday breakfast on the 25th, at about 11:00 am. I got the Dubliner Café Standard, sunny side up with sausage, doll got the same, just scrambled, with bacon. Pretty basic breakfast. First, it took a good 10 - 15 minutes to get coffee and the menu's. Our wait person was really a sweetheart, her name is Rachel. She was very sweet and apologized multiple times for the wait. The place was full when we walked in, but it's not a big café. What I observed is that the kitchen could not handle much more than one meal at a time. read more
