    Ducks for sale
    Annzie A.

I have passed by this Duck Donuts many times, but never stopped by until recently. Although I'm not big into cake donuts, I love that they are fresh and made-to-order. I'm not sure if each location is different or if this is a newer addition since my last visit (~10 years ago), but they have boxes of donuts for sale with select flavors (party box, breakfast box, signature assortment, etc.). I also didn't realize they have SO MANY flavor options available now! We ordered a chocolate sprinkled and a glazed donut. It wasn't until we sat down that we saw the poster for the seasonal flavors....wishing we ordered those! Either way, our donuts were delicious. I love that each donut was packaged individually in their signature boxes. We came on a weekday afternoon, so it was empty which was nice. The staff weren't overly inviting or friendly, but were nice. They have a self-service kiosk, which I didn't even pay attention to initially. There are a variety of rubber ducks on display, available for purchase, $1.85. They also have a lot of merchandise available for purchase. There is plenty of parking in front, shared by other businesses.

The new donuts holes are delicious. I picked some up when I got my dozen. I ordered the cinnamon sugar with the dip. So delicious. I think I paid five buck!

I greatly underestimated how popular these doughnuts are lol. Out of the three times I wanted to…read moreorder their doughnuts, I was only able to successfully get them once. Granted, on the two Saturdays I wanted to go to Doughlab, they sold out before noon and I'm not much of a morning person. Luckily, on the Sunday I went, they still had plenty in stock before noon. I'm glad they're pretty active on their Instagram (@doughlab_loudon) so I was able to check their Instagram story if they were sold out for the day or not. Their Instagram is also a good place to see what that week's rotation of flavors are. Doughnuts Ordered: * worth trying - [Everything Bagel Doughnut w/ Chives]: I was most excited to try this because I've never heard of a savory doughnut before but I was little disappointed. I thought the everything bagel seasoning on the outside was too salty and there was too much whipped cream cheese filling for my preference. Still, a very unique doughnut. - [Pumpkin Pie (Filled)*]: Conversely, I wish there was more pumpkin creme filling in this doughnut; I loved the whipped consistency. - [Cinnamon Brioche Twist Doughnut*]: This was so good! They reminded me of kkwabaegi. Would I go back? : I would but, sadly, yesterday, Dec 28th, was Doughlab's last day of operations due to the owner moving away. I'm glad I was able to try them before they closed. For anyone missing similar filled, malasada-type doughnuts, @foodooboos recently made an Instagram reel about where to find filled doughnuts in the DMV.

I wanted a doughnut, but didn't want the whole thing for myself, so I lightly nudged my sweet tooth friend to split one with me. I knew he wasn't going to say no. It required very little to no convincing. Sadly, they were out of half of their options, but we tried the PANDAN CUSTARD DOUGHNUT (4.65) because we both like pandan. The custard was creamy with a strong pandan flavor. The donut was soft and chewy with a delicious sugar layer. I'm sure these have been sitting out for a few hours, so I'm impressed how well they hold up. I would definitely pay the price for these delicious doughnuts again.

I hope they'll pop up at DC farmer's markets again some day! I was able to try their new hojicha cinnamon roll and the classic miso pumpkin donut this past weekend at a pop-up they attended, and it was delicious as always (but not as fresh as it used to be at the markets, of course). My friend also loved her black sesame kouign amann, and I've enjoyed their croissants I nthe past. It's just a really solid home bakery, and I was excited to hear they might be opening a storefront in Annandale soon. Definitely check them out if you see them!

It's even smaller, and in a tiny random, not where you would expect to find bakery! It has a tiny display of fresh pastries, shelf full of fresh baked breads and freezer full of more breads! Service is great, always with a smile. We tried a little bit of everything and ended up going back a couple of days later for some fresh bread. Finding good, like good gf bread is really hard. Most times literally hard. Got the brioche buns and was impressed for gf buns! Yes they still fell apart. Yes they weren't as soft as traditional brioche, but they were good for gf buns. I love their ham and cheese croissant. It's greasy, I prefer it cold, my kid only likes it warmed up. Donut is by far the best gf cake style donut we've ever had. It's light, flavor is incredible, moist. I typically skip gf cake donuts, but this one was calling to me, so happy we got it. Cinnamon roll was not good. Frosting had zero sugar. It was hard as a rock, so no one wanted to eat it. But as most gf cinnamon rolls, you have to eat them within a few hours, so this one could have just been too old. There's a decent amount of gluten free bakeries scattered across the DMV area, but this is by far the best for bread! The best variety, fresh and frozen. If they sell out of something you can count on they'll have a back up of something similar. Also. surprised to see complaining about prices..... I actually think they aee cheap for gluten free items!
