My reasons for the 5 stars. My donuts were freshly made and that made them soft and warm. A warm fresh donut is always better, I microwave my donuts at home. Second reason, you can choose the flavor to dip your donut into. I went with one maple and one peanut butter. They get a bonus for having a maple flavored topping. Ate there once when it first opened. The donuts or heavy cake like donuts. I understand some people like that type of donut. I do not. I much prefer the lighter less Brady typed on it. It's interesting to watch the donuts made but again the taste the product and the overall texture of the down it was not to my liking. However I understand some people like to have cake like donuts. I'm not one. Also because it was new at the time the lines thru put the experience were long and timely. The overall operation for checking out seem to be broken. That's all you really need to know, but go ahead and continue reading if you wish ;) There are no DDs up my way, so while in Williamsburg, I strolled my fluffy lil' self on over to this location. I've heard nothing but great things about this chain, and as a lover of sweets, I was intrigued... The girl at the register could tell we were new to DDs. I imagine we must've been standing there looking like two deer in headlights when she greeted us, "Hi... Are you new here?" That broke the ice right away. "Yes," we laughed, relieved. She then proceeded to kindly walk us through what they offer, and how to order. tbh I'm still a bit confused on the process, but it's nothing another trip (or two) can't solve :D HAHA. After a bit of confusion (and the girl's outstanding patience... bless her), we managed to order a half dozen with chocolate glaze. Figured it would be a good first DDs donut to try (though I'm still kind of haunted by the thought of the more "wacky" flavors I didn't try--but there's always another time). So now, the first bite. As soon as that deliciousness hit my tastebuds, I was in love. So waaaarmmmm and soft on the inside, the dough having a slight crispiness on the outside. The mouthfeel was so ADDICTIVE that I had a second right after bahaha. I sound like such a creep, "mouthfeel." But I don't even care, because it was the best thing ever. Seriously. Go to this place. Note: their donuts are best when fresh & warm. They lose their magic the next day and taste surprisingly average (though still good). Never let your first donut from Duck Donuts be a day old! ;) 5 stars for the donuts alone, 4 stars including the coffee. It was good, but you dispense, sweeten, etc. your coffee yourself. If you like doughnuts, you need to pay a visit. They are probably a little different than what you are used to, but just do it. It's worth it, especially if you have kids. So im not a huge fan of donuts, but when they are good...man they hit the spot. Duck Donuts is going to be a highly missed spot since i live on the West Coast. A friend took me here say i had to try them as they were one of his favorite places growing up in the area. The donuts are made fresh to order and are really hot and thick, they have a different kind of dough that is a lot thicker, but delicious. I got a donut with maple and bacon as a topping, and it was amazing. I really hope i can make it back to this place!!!! but just for the donuts. I also had a breakfast sandwich and coffee...and they came up short. I would probably not try anything else here but the donuts, they get a five star, but as far as the rest I had...ehhh I would pass. read more

I come into Duck regularly. I hear it's an OBX tradition but I'm sure glad we got blessed with a store here in the burg. Every flavor is amazing, even the maple bacon. It's like the chipotle of donuts, so don't expect pre-made donuts. You have to wait a few minutes for them but it's worth it. I hate donuts but we were doing the "touristy" thing on vacation and after dragging my teenage boys through yet another historical venue plus a winery I promised them Duck Donuts. There donuts are good, but nothing exciting. I like their assembly line, the fresh toppings, but it says their donuts are fried to order and that isn't true. When I placed my order, the girl grabbed six donuts that had been previously fried from under a heat lamp and place the toppings on. My donut was greasy and not the freshest texture. Although I prefer yeast donuts, if these were fresh I probably would have came back...I might try them again, but no time soon. read more
