Had to go to Richmond for a car repair issue. Seeing as it was early Saturday morning I thought I'd swing through Krispy Kreme and get some donuts for breakfast. Well, "teh machine was broke" at Krispy Kreme and they didn't have any glazed. Which led me to Sugar Shack Dounts. It's sort of in the Fan (I guess?) thank goodness for GPS or I'd never find it. Very small parking lot. No inside seating, all grab and go. Anyway. Walked in, scanned the donut case. Lots of Gucci looking donuts (I'm a big fan of glazed and chocolate iced...basic donuts). didn't see any glazed but they did have chocolate ice. Seemed somewhat busy for a Saturday morning (surprise? not to me, but apparenlty a surprise to whoever schedules people to work there). Service wasn't necessarily slow, but adding up the gucci coffees and all the door-dash (I'm assuming....there was a tape machine by the cash register steadily spitting out tickets) it was busy for one (then two) people to handle. Service was friendly enough. Second person showed up...placed my order, 3 chocolate glazed. $8! are you kidding? $8 for 3 donuts. Crazy. But I bought them. Went to my car to eat. So (after eating my 3 chocolate iced donuts): oh my. They were spectacular. A little "thicker" or "firmer" than a Krispy Kreme....and the chocolate ice stayed on the donut, solid, the whole time. It has honestly been too long since I've gotten donuts here. (I guess now that working remote gets you limited access to more fun things haha) I decided to pick up a dozen of these deliciousness for my kids to experience during the weekend. I ended up doing a morning pickup on their website for 7:45 AM. They have limited parking so I thought it would be empty since I was picking up early. Nope, boy was I wrong. They were already packed and had a line when I went in to pick up my order. Highly recommend doing online order and pick up if you don't want to spend extra money on some freaking delicious goodies. I already told the barista that the Chai Latte she made was..... They're 21 minutes away (I-95 is empty on Sunday mornings) and I feel like getting back on the road and going to get another one. Unfortunately after 2 of these donuts, I'm feeling like after Thanksgiving. I just want to recline in the chair and sleep til Xmas!! They put effort, time, and love into preparing everything. Their attitudes match their products. Pleasant, courteous, and the type of good mood and good energy that is contagious!!! A couple with a baby was in there and the cashier was actually talking to the baby and making her coo and laugh. The baby's mom expressed,"You're gonna need me to get the door for you." as she assisted me exiting with my 3 dozen guilty pleasures!! (I didn't eat them all. We have 5 kids and a niece living here and 2 other kids visiting that require spoiling every so often) My two complaints about the Lombardy store.... 1.) It's too damn small. The products and the attitude of the staff creates the type of atmosphere that requires a dozen or so tables for people to remain and soak enough of that good energy in, to go out and spread those good vibes around. 2.) I try to be at work at 7am and I try to bring positive energy in the door either me, especially on Mondays. The Sugar Shack doesn't open til 7am. I'd use up all that positive energy by the time I get through that downtown Richmond traffic. You guys are the greatest!! I appreciate your great donuts, lattes, and customer service!! Works of art! Firstly I'll say I'm not normally a donut person which makes me picky about which ones I'll eat. Anytime I see sugar shack, I always have to grab one (donuts randomly show up at my job from time to time). The dough is more bread like than Krispy kreme or Dunkin. It is so hard to find vegan donuts and my trip to Sugar Shack was like finding paradise in Richmond. The shop is pretty small with a large case of donut flavors to choose from. About half the donuts available are vegan. I love how many creative flavors they have like the Samoa donut and Babe Ruth. They have your classic favorites with sprinkles as well. I got a nice assortment hitting my favorite flavor profile of sweet and salty with the salted caramel, Samoa, and Babe Ruth flavors. I was so impressed with the donut itself. This place is what it says it is, a little shack on a corner. They only have a handful of parking spaces, so it can be hard (HELL) to get in/out- especially during peak hours. It's small and kinda dark inside and they have cool drinks as well as a coffee bar type situation. They have lots and lots of cool flavor and tons of vegan options. The first time I went, I tried the glazed cronut and it knocked my socks off. I used to work at a super busy bakery that specialized in cronuts and sugar shack's is even better!! I went 3 more times over the weekend (don't judge me!) and *every time* they were sold out of my beloved cronut. One of those times, I tried other stuff, a glazed twist and some kind of espresso cinnamon bun type business. Both good, but not enough to get me off the cronut crack. They should consider making more! I got up early one morning to make sure I got my hands on another cronut and that's when a very friendly person told me you can order online! Now that I know that, I have had to stop myself from ordering every morning before I gain another 15lbs. Whenever I'm in Richmond I always hit this place up! Definitely lives up to its name because these donuts are sweet. My personal favorite that I've always gotten is the Samoa donut which is just fantastic and remind me of the Girl Scout cookie. The maple bacon also never disappoints as well. Wow! Some of the best donuts I have ever had. With an ample selection that made my head spin (in a good way). My daughter and I had to resist wanting to sample all of them. We agreed on a half dozen and started the selection process. It was hard. Really hard. As they all looked so good. But we did it. And then proceeded to pound a couple of donuts each in the car. All the yeast donuts have a vegan base! That means like 90% of the donuts on display the day we went were vegan - yay! The only yeast donuts that weren't vegan had non-vegan candy toppings. I had the glazed bowtie, the marble, and the French toast (not all at once though, me no pig). They were all so, so good. We drove almost 3 hours for a Richmond day trip and I stumbled upon Sugar Shack on Happy Cow while we were traveling around Richmond. It was, by far, the best thing I ate while in Richmond (which I find to be an excellent food city, overall). It was a little easy to miss, it's on the corner of Lombardy and Leigh, and a little bit back from the street.
