Uriah and his team are of that persuasion. Hired them to put in 24 recessed lights and a (very) large ceiling vent in the kitchen. It all came out looking amazing, my wife and I are very happy with the finished product. Go the extra mile, naw, they go the extra thousand. I would hire these guys back in a NYC minute!

Now that the Holidays are behind us, I can finally write this review. Long story short, we had a…read morepipe break under our main bathroom which also involved sewage. Following the remediation work authorized by the insurance company, we decided that this unfortunate event gave us the opportunity to completely remodel our all original 1961 bathroom. I began looking for contractors and reading the reviews on Yelp. I selected three, two from Yelp and one which was a referral. Uriah, owner of Hawkins Remodeling & Repair, responded quickly to my request and set up a date and time that worked wonderfully with our schedule. He arrived as scheduled and we toured my complete wreck of a bathroom. He took measurements, pictures and we talked all while he took notes of everything including what our vision was. He asked questions and offered suggestions including installing a new bathroom door. Uriah sent back a proposal just a couple days later and while I was still waiting for the last contractor. In the end, we just liked everything Uriah and his company had to offer and selected them for the remodel. We agreed on a start date the Monday following Thanksgiving. Uriah asked if he could come over the on the weekend prior to drop of the dump trailer as the bathroom was going to be gutted with a lot of debris, so this made perfect sense. On Monday, Uriah and his team members, Carlos and Miguel, showed up promptly and right away began working by masking all the carpeted area with plastic sheeting where they would be travelling on. They also set up their 'shop' in our backyard for the duration of the project. Every day I came home to an extensive transformation. We had a lot going on in this little old bathroom including a faux divider wall removed, replacing the window with an obscure double pane window, which I asked for at the last minute. They were also moving electrical outlets and extending the plumbing height to accommodate our new fixtures but more so for all the tall bodies living in our house. They removed our existing cast iron bathtub, preserving it as we were having it refinished, so they removed it entirely so they could reinforce the main beams and redo the subfloor. Do you know how heavy those tubs are? Also, did I mention that this was a 1961 original AND was built on adobe? This means nothing in our home is level! Carlos and Miguel handled every challenge that was thrown their way. Uriah checked in with me on a regular basis and discussed any potential problems or issues that his team discovered and offered suggestions or solutions. It was very refreshing to know they just wanted it done right and for us to be completely satisfied. Near the end, we had the tub resurfaced and no one was allowed in the bathroom for two days following as it needed to cure. I didn't want to lose them for a that time, so I asked Uriah if they could replace our back patio slider, which too was old in need of replacing. He quickly gave me a bid, I accepted, and the team installed a beautiful new patio slider. It should be noted that it was pouring rain too! They came to finish up on the final pieces and what an amazing Christmas gift it was! I can't recommend Hawkins Remodeling & Repair enough. They truly transformed a "beast" into a "beauty". Thank you, Uriah, Carlos, and Miguel (The Hawkins crew)! We look forward to working on another project with you in the future!

The people that he has working for him is also very professional. We had him build a deck on the front of the house, complete kitchen remodel, master bath, main bath and laundry room. My wife and I needed to remodel our Napa home, where I had grown up. Originally built in 1959, it…read morewas a wonderful example of mid-century modern architecture but needed serious updating and a different layout to meet our needs. Our architect recommended Hanes Construction--a recommendation that turned out to be the best thing she did for us. We've now been back in our home for three months, long enough to fully appreciate the quality of finishes and attention to detail that Dave and his crew brought to our project. We've had time to figure out our new systems and appliances, sometimes with Dave's crew's help. After nearly two years of working with Dave, we can't say enough about how responsive he and his team have been to our questions and requests--even months after finishing the project. Not everyone ends a construction project as pleased as we are. The project was difficult and extensive. As Dave pointed out, it's much harder to build a house within a house than to build one from scratch. There wasn't a room that wasn't touched. The living room became the primary bathroom. What had once been a deck converted to a family room was enlarged to become a great room/kitchen with a 14-foot ceiling. The entire project was expected to take 12 months but, with over 70 change orders--some Dave recommended for practical reasons, others we requested--ended up taking 18 months. Given the scope of work, this wasn't an unreasonable timeline. Dave and his team did a flawless job working with us to create the home we wanted and made seamless adjustments as needs arose. The first major change came when we discovered that the great room would be built on the former family room, which had been converted from a deck in 1966. The deck had been built with about 1" of slope over 20 feet to shed rainwater. Dave pointed this out, showed us that the flooring really needed to be replaced, and explained how he could make it perfect. We accepted the change order. Six months later, he helped us determine the correct size for the new deck and showed us how to make it both beautiful and fire-resistant. Hanes Construction was incredibly easy to work with--friendly and helpful throughout the entire project. I always looked forward to meeting them on site. Communication was excellent whether by email, text, phone, or in person. I can't count the number of times I received responses late in the evening or on weekends answering my questions. Their attention to detail was exceptional. From workmanship to finishing touches, everything exceeded our expectations. The fine details consistently surprised me. One example: I found a workman hand-painting grout lines with an artist's watercolor brush at the intersection of a wall and floor. The cabinet work alone--done in their own shop--would have set them apart from other construction companies I've worked with. When we had a custom door fabricated for our dishwasher, the wood was too heavy, so Hanes hollowed out the panel to ensure it matched the thickness of the other cabinets while being substantially lighter than a solid door would have been. From technical execution to financial management, we couldn't be more pleased. Every change order was proposed and explained clearly. In most cases, we recognized the need immediately, though occasionally we needed more detail, which Dave and his team happily and thoroughly provided. We never had concerns about the budget. This is a top-notch outfit. I'm sure we'll be back to make additional adjustments in the future, and I couldn't recommend them more highly.

He then said that his workers were all covered by Worker's Comp, among other benefits, and that he paid a fair wage, and that he was the most ethical contractor in the industry, resulting in his workers' being highly productive and efficient leading to shorter project times. This sealed the deal for me. Furthermore, he claimed that the extra 30% or so that he was billing for his workers, was due of the worker's comp insurance, which only he provided to his workers (as opposed to the many unscrupulous other contractors that were around). As a property owner, you could be held liable for workers' injuries if the contractor did not carry worker's comp, and so, I agreed to Mark's deal. Within a few days, Mark had exceeded the estimate he had quoted, and was very difficult to get hold of. Furthermore, his workers would come and go at all times of the day (between 7:00 am and 8:00 pm) and I simply lost track of how many "cooks" were in the kitchen. As of last count, I noticed some 15+ names on the invoices, and some would appear for a couple of hours, and then disappear. But Mark would send me invoices claiming that his workers spent the entire day at the property - which was simply untrue. Mark would not be interested in even listening to me or investigating my grievances. Instead, he would brag that he did me a big favor by accepting my project, and that he typically only did multi-million dollar gigs, and not pittances like mine. Long story short, the project budget exceeded the estimate by more than 100%. Mark became extremely aggressive and feisty, and it was impossible to work or reason with him. I hired a Private Investigator to find out who this person really was -- like a Dr. Jekyl Mr. Hyde. Turns out that he had been sued for fraud, but more importantly, the whole worker's comp, fairness, ethical contractor, and so on, charade, was ALL ONE BIG LIE. It also appears that Mark may have left the Better Business Bureau due to bad reviews and that he may have hired a reputation defending company to increase his Yelp reviews to 5 stars by questionable tactics. Good Guy Builders license has been suspended for Worker's Comp violations and is under investigation. After my PI reported this, I found on the CSLB site: "License is under suspension for failure to comply with Workers Comp. A workers´ compensation certificate or exemption statement may have been received by the Board but not yet processed. Once the certificate or exemption statement is processed the suspension will be lifted retroactively to the effective date of the certificate or exemption statement. Ask the contractor for proof of worker's compensation and contact the insurance company to verify coverage." Here is the URL: https://www.cslb.ca.gov/OnlineServices/CheckLicenseII/LicenseDetail.aspx?LicNum=1016932 Please see image below. This is one of the greatest betrayals where I was charged an arm and a leg, and told a romantic story of workers being taken good care of, and so on, all the while, when Mark was simply pocketing the money that was supposed to cover his workers' safety and well being. Such greed, deception, and dishonesty, in my opinion, does not deserve a second chance. You decide whether you want to hire this company and deal with Mark. --- Addendum to Mr. Santosh R's note: 1. I am a real person. I was threatened by Mark that I would be sued if I posted anything negative on Yelp. 2. Yes, I did edit my posts before finally settling on one. Anyone in my position would do the same. 3. Finally, the facts remain unchanged. Good Guy Builder's license is under suspension and this may be independently verified on the CSLB website (see link). Likewise, the lawsuits against them may be independently verified. People like Santosh and Mark are the real culprits who boost their yelp ratings in a manner that skews it in their favor - by attacking anyone who posts negative reviews, and threatening those in dispute with defamation lawsuits. Do not believe anything Santosh or Mark say. The suspension is more than ample evidence that Good Guy Builders is a crooked business and not one that you should be patronizing.
