This place is What You See Is What You Get. Metal, booze and good times. I spent a hot late afternoon here with some friends in July and loved the atmosphere. It's a metal dive bar with a inviting attitude. A stones throw from the east river and walking distance from the L train. Everyone hanging out there was friendly and talkative. They had the BBQ roaring and shared some food with us... to go along with our dollar PBR's? Wonderful! The bathroom was a mess, but it's expected. I dragged some friends out here last time I visited Brooklyn because, Holy Shit metal bar in NYC! We must've gotten here on an off-night, because there were probably 6 other people in the bar when we arrived. Overall , it was definitely not what I expected, all the decor was super cheezy, like a Disney re-imagination of metal, or what I imagine Gene Simmons' living room looks like: yuppie to the core with a thin metal veneer. Everything was scrubbed clean and there was no grime to be found. Fuck that shit. $1 pabst is a blessing, but cleanliness is not metal. read more

An important point I want to make is how awesome the owner Jimmy is...my boyfriend Pete had purchased a t-shirt from here months ago and didn't realize until we got back to Jersey that he didn't get the right one. Well, we held onto it (he never wore it). We came back recently one afternoon and Jimmy was outside washing windows. The bar wasn't open yet. If you like heavy metal, you must come here. There are no exceptions, unless of course, you are a poser. Or a straightedge wimp. The new(ish) location isn't as cool as the old one on the north side, but it hasn't lost it's charm. The jukebox still kicks ass, as do the bartenders and all of the stuff on the wall. Duff's is not a place I would have thought to call home. I had the pleasure of working at Duff's and out of all the places I have been in the world, this is one of my favorites. It is the definitive dive bar. The decorations are a testament to the one and only Jimmy Duff. I spent so many nights looking at the walls and everytime I set foot in Duff's I notice something new. This is a metal bar, and I am not necessarily a metal head, but I gained an appreciation because of the lovely people of Duff's. This place is for anyone, great people and cold beer. Nothing fancy just come in and enjoy yourself at one of Brooklyn's best bars. Watch some classic VHS tapes and drink up. Amazing bartenders and regulars. This place is just my style. Super friendly bartenders, rock music playing, porn or erotic cartoons on tv, and happy customers. I'm gonna steal the following line because it is very apt for this place: "Duff's is for the hard rock/heavy metal/horror movie/sleaze crowd. If it's not evident to the casual visitor by the new and classic mix of tunes on the juke". I went there just because I had nothing else to do this night on my trip to NYC and was very excited to have found it. I stayed there until the place closed just talking to the bartender and an Iraq war veteran sitting next to me. The chick bartender didn't seem to friendly but I may have rubbed her the wrong way or something. She was very friendly and chatty with the other customers. Its too bad I live in NC because this would be my go-to bar. I wish they had a pool table but it seems like no one in NYC has pool tables so its whatever. Go here. read more

I would have rated Duff's higher if the service was better. Loved the music and the ambiance but the bartender, I believe her name was Karen, was very inattentive. My friend and I waited for her for about 20 minutes while she talked to a group of people, who didn't really seem into her conversation. Our second round was no different. We waited for her while she chatted up another group of people, blatantly ignoring us. Finally Doc, another bartender, came to the rescue. He was attentive and efficient but we were leaving by the time he showed up. I want to go back because I like the place but traveling all the way to Brooklyn to receive poor service doesn't seem appealing. read more

If you are into the harder things in life with music then this is your new home. Though I dont want to say that because you will steal my dive bar home. You honestly wont find a more badass bar yet completely a home style dive bar. I proudly wear my Duffs Alcohol Abuse Center hoody....with people oddly looking at me...since they have no clue what it means or stands for. I have gone to tons of shows and ended up seeing the bands there after the show and grabbed a few beers with them. I was visiting from Toronto, and with a few friends stopped here on my last night (sunday, May 23rd). We had a great time at Duff's! Met some very cool people there, and had a few cheap beers. The bartender kept us thoroughly entertained... blowing fire, challenging us to 'spin the wheel', and making great conversation. She was awesome and really made our night. I was excited to see how this place was as I enjoy "rock dives like Manitoba's or Double Down Saloon in the city. This was a pretty out of the way from other stuff. It was quite empty on a Saturday night and the crowd was mostly "older" dudes. Maybe it was an off night, but at least PBRs were $3 (though I would have liked to see a beer and shot deal) and the music was loud and heavy. read more

Hells yes, Duff's is definitely one of my favorite bars of all time, hands down! I've had many a good time here with Jimmy Duff and the Duff's Crew...the hottest and coolest bartenders, the best music and even better atmosphere....I was a fan when the bar was Bellevue in Hell's Kitchen and I will remain true when Duff's finds it's new home in the next month! We've even shot a few movies here, look for it in 'Punk Rock Holocaust 2' as well as a few Joanna Angel movies! read more

I used to go to what Duff's used to be, Bellevue Bar, many years ago, and finally made the trip to Duff's about a year ago for the first time. It is actually nicer than what Bellevue Bar was, which is saying pretty much nothing. Bellevue Bar, for example, did not have lights in their bathrooms, which is pretty absurd if you think about it. As for Duff's, I'm sure one has gotten the idea by now. It's a metal bar with good bartenders that know how to make a drink. There's a nice outside area which is always a plus in the summer and the bathrooms, much unlike the ones at Bellevue, not only have working lights but are unbelievably quite clean. I last went a few Friday's ago and there was a pretty good crowd, yet not too crowded. read more

My only complaint about Duffs is that I wish it were closer and easier for me to get to. Still this location is a lot more accessible than the 1st one. Although I miss Bellevue dearly I am glad Duffs is there carrying on that legacy. I always feel like I have come "home" in a way when I do make it out there. I love Duff's, going there is a time-honored tradition in my group of friends, and I've had many memorable nights out here that I'll never forget. That said, I do miss the old Kent Ave location. There was something special about the blown out sound system, the stench soaked into the bathroom floor of years worth of pee and vomit missing the toilet , and the way people would pack into the tiny space and talk drunkenly and loudly about things most people would find inappropriate anywhere else. And the outdoor space! It was great. A heavy metal dive bar at its finest. Golden memories to tell my kids someday. *sigh* Duff's will always have a place close to my heart even though the new place, while more spacious, lacks the ambiance of the old space. The ambiance alone gives this place 5-stars-- even if metal isn't your thing, I can't imagine anyone could not feel relaxed and fascinated with the truly one of a kind decor, the "fuck it, have fun" vibe, the music that's usually on point unless some asshole buys $10 worth of the same artist on the jukebox, and the drinks that are strong and priced right for a bar in Brooklyn. You don't need to look the part of a metalhead/ artist/ biker/ goth babe to be welcomed here by the staff, but it probably helps. read more

spitting distance from the Marcy Avenue stop, just follow the trail of black t-shirts and you're at Duff's! major props to Phil and Stacey for inviting me out here...apparently everyone else was being lame, but I am always in the mood to RAAAAAAGE, so I signed up for the expedition. first: cheap drinks. I'm a weekend warrior, so I rarely get to experience happy hour specials. anywho, I rolled in here at 10:30 and drinks seemed to get cheaper as the night progressed. at some point I paid 7 dollars for a Stella and Jameson shot. the bartenders were freaking incredible (one is the guitarist from God Forbid), friendly and fast slinging the drinks. second: the atmosphere. despite our grizzled and frightening appearance, metalheads are probably the friendliest people you'll ever meet. music was roaring, people were talking, and I even mingled my way into playing a game with some regulars...it involved spinning a wheel of numbers, and slapping each other across the face. aaaand there was 70s porn playing on some TVs. aaaaand tons of memorabilia of metal bands and classic horror movies. third: LIVE BANDS! they were playing mostly covers from what we heard - heard a lot of Slayer and Pantera. then, at one point, Jimmy Duff was strolling around (sidenote: the guy is one of the friendliest, coolest people on the planet! you rule!) and said "they're stuck in traffic, but Machine Head is on their way to play a suprise set". Stay away from this place. More than likely you can not handle this bar. It is truly the airlock to Hell and a visit to this spot should be considered a trip to a 3rd world country; get your shots and probably some travel insurance. If you do have the misfortune of losing a bet and end up at this joint do not be fooled by the appearance of the hottie bartenders. They are truly the spawn of Satan himself and if you are not superlatively polite to them and tip well, it is likely her minons at the end of the bar will tear you to shreds and post your entrails on the front door as a warning to the other shmucks who were foolish enough to test themselves against the forces of the Underworld. You should write a will before leaving your house to come to this bar as you will have signed away your soul by the end of the night. At the very least make sure you have health insurance because it is likely you will have to be rushed to the emergency room in an ambulance due to the extreme alcohol poisoning. i haven't been to duff's in a while.. but my experiences there have always been unique and of a shorter duration. their PBR deal brings me in .. and then you can meander off into the w-burg abyss. i've mostly watched porn on their TVs - one time, it was pretty gross porn.. but I couldn't keep my eyes off it. the bartenders are awesome - the bathroom is somehow intriguing - the jukebox has older tunes that you won't find elsewhere - and uh, yeah PBR. read more
