So many positives to share about Layers Bakery. Google Maps will be helpful as far as navigation. They have lots of free parking in a lot out front and the bakery counter is just down the main hallway entrance, on the left hand side of the hallway. It's just after the Fowler formal dining room. So, since it's student run, prices are reasonable and tax is included in every price/purchase. It's not open on Fridays or weekends, but is generally open 8 am to 4 pm Mon through Thurs. They do have some hallway seating available as well. And they do a limited selection of coffee drinks too. It's mostly sweet baked goods that are available and they offer both vegan and gluten free options too. Expect to see cookies, moon pies, possibly biscuits, chocolates, lots of pastries and maybe even a mini cheesecake or two. Seems like both students and professors work the counter and they will of course answer any questions you have regarding ingredients. I'd say on a typical morning they'll have a solid 25 to 35 different things you can potentially buy. I love that everything is made by students and that any profit they earn goes right back into their own culinary program. They don't really restock during the day, so its first come, first served and items like croissants and pain du chocolat can go quick. Both are very good and reasonably priced at 2 dollars each. They also rotate things in and out based on what they're working on in class...like one day they might have chocolate eclairs for sale, but the next day they don't. I've yet to see them offer donuts but they do plenty of chocolate items. One of my favorites is the death by brownie at 3 dollars. The chocolate mousse inside is sooo good. Moon pies are enormous and are like 2 to 3 bucks. Cookies like snickerdoodle, oatmeal, chocolate chunk, etc. are 50 cents each and are very good sized for that price. I did include pics of their case from my last visit, but I'm sorry for the poor quality. You can also look them up on Facebook and follow them as they sometimes do special events like a bbq fundraiser on a Saturday or custom order chocolates for Valentines Day. They'll also announce if they are going to be closed for a certain reason. These students are producing very good quality items at very good prices. They also do homemade breads on Thursdays after 2 PM only. Great stuff. Check them out, but keep it on the down low...I want my favorite items to still be there when I visit late in the day!!

But, I couldn't help using an exceptional exclamation to emphasize what an incredible discovery I had yesterday! I happened to find Leve on-line while looking for a baked treat nearby (I'm visiting Coastal Carolina University). Leve is tucked in an unusual spot, in more of an industrial zone (less than 5 minutes from CCU, just across 501). But, make no mistake, it is a quaint little shop that can boast of award winning scones (a huge variety of delicious flavors), croissants (the chocolate ones rival the best I tasted on a recent trip to Paris) and sourdough breads that will make you wish you had found Leve even sooner! Not to mention the personable, friendly and proud owners (the chefs themselves) who are only too happy to assist you and chat with you in between waves of customers (almost all who have discovered Leve through word of mouth)! Here's your chance to get in the know! I assure you that you will be back for more and telling your friends about Leve! Bon appetit!

I actually thought I walked into the wrong place because it looked so different. Assuming they noticed the confusion on my face, the owner says 'you must've been here on Saturday. We only have that selection of baked goods on Saturdays, if you watched the video it clearly explains that.' I was completely taken aback and to this day, have no idea what video he's referring to. I picked a couple items of whatever was available, then chose the olive garlic bread. As I said it out loud, the owner says 'it's OLIVES bread.' Embarrassed that I read the name from the label incorrectly, I again had no idea what he was talking about, it clearly states OLIVE GARLIC SOURDOUGH. He must've noticed my confusion again and explained how it's actual pieces of olives in the bread and not olive oil. I told him I knew it was olives and he said that some customers think it's 'olive oil'. Anyway, I spent $46 and probably won't return because I felt awful after that experience. It doesnt take away from the quality or taste of the products, but the professionalism was lacking.
