This was my last stop before leaving Detroit. Nothing says "great breakfast" like 2 coney dogs and a Vernors, right? lol Loved the old school counter vibe of this place. The lady behind the counter was nice! The dogs, were delicious! They use a regular non cased hot dog here, so no snap, but the texture was still enjoyable. They pile on the chili and mustard and onions here. Probably the heaviest coney dogs I had all trip. After I was done, I still had a couple forkfuls of chili and onions to scoop up. Super messy, just like all the others. Also.....why do all the coney dog places in Detroit use shitty paper thin napkins? You need to use like 20. All good though, worth it! Nice classic 24 hr Detroit Coney Island diner. I have no notes. Came straight here straight after landing at the airport & getting picked up by my best friend, to try Anthony Bourdain's FAV spot. Nice snap to their dog, delicious chili, and nice onion coverage. I like their limited menu that is coney & breakfast-centric. I still prefer Lafayette Coney Island for sentimental reasons but I'll def be back here again. Remember this place is CASH ONLY! Had to do a side quest to CVS to get cash. read more

Because this might be the most inexpensive and fastest meal I've had in 10 years. --- --- --- When doing my food research for a recent trip to the area, I learned something new: Detroit is known for its coney places. And upon learning this, it seemed pretty universal that Duly's was the favorite of all of them. So when my friend and I drove in from Cleveland, Duly's was literally our first stop. We waited maybe 5 minutes for a couple of seats to open up, and promptly ordered a couple of coney's each. I'm not exaggerating when I say I was taking my first bite less than 3 minutes later. And they were quite tasty. So tasty, in fact, that I ordered a third one. And some coffee to avoid a food coma. And my grand total was $13 lol. Man I am disappointed to even write this review of one of my favorite old school spots for breakfast I hope this experience was someone being trained to cooked because I have never had a bad breakfast form this restaurant in over 20 years so this morning I ordered my usual veg omelette no cheese with potatoes and their salad the omelette the potatoes and the salad and toast. Duly's is the real deal, baby. Dogs, onion rings, chili, and every greasy breakfast you can imagine. Zero frills or nonsense. Sit at the counter, let the waiter know what you'd like, and simply enjoy the locals. Definitely felt like I stepped back into a time machine and went back to Queens in the 80's. Duly's is the coolest kid in town! Been great for years and they are still slinging some of the best Coney fare in our fine city of Detroit. I thoroughly enjoyed/destroyed my loose burger with extra jalapeños... and grabbed a bowl of chili to take home for later. Small hole in the wall place that serves up some of the best coney dogs around Detroit. Any time in visiting from the west coast I will make the 20+ mile drive several times a week to stop in and get 4-6 coneys to go. still affordable, and very delicious. What a legacy, established in 1921 and still holds much of the original character! Old school diner with reasonable prices. I eat here 1-2 times a year on the rare occasion when I get the chance to stop by Southwest Detroit for breakfast. I haven't tried the Coney dogs, but the hot dogs here received Anthony Bourdain's approval. I've had the breakfast food, grits, tuna sandwich, and fries. I recommend sticking to the breakfast items rather than ordering a sandwich. The tuna sandwich was pretty standard and not a standout on the menu. I've said this before in other reviews, but Detroit proper is the best place to get a cheap and delicious breakfast. Restaurants in the suburbs overcharge as much as 4x more for breakfast, and something is missing from the taste you get at a Detroit greasy spoon. The breakfast is simple and filling: eggs, meat, potatoes, and toast for $6.25 (cash only). An order of grits gives you a generous container, and if you say yes to lots of butter, they add a lot. However, the butter doesn't add much to the flavor. They should use salted butter. I love that places like Duly's are still standing, and it feels like not much has probably changed since it opened over a century ago. read more

Bourdain (rest in power) would never have led us astray. This place is a gem! Cheap, tasty food, made quick for you to essentially get in and get out. I got the coney dog and fries for $7.50. Taste was excellent and the French fries were plenty. Two things to note, interior is tiny and you have a 1 hour time limit on dining in. Additionally, it's cash only so be prepared. If you don't have cash, there is an atm across the street. I have yet to try any other coney dogs but very impressed with this one! read more

One of my favorite Coney places. The staff are always very customer focused and friendly. Each time I've sat the counter I've been fortunate enough to meet a new & friendly local. They used to not have a fryer back in the day, so we used to get chili cheese hash browns instead of chili cheese fries. I sometimes will order them just for nostalgia. He has several spots in mind but this was on of his hangouts after a night of drinking back in his hey- day so he wanted me to get the experience! I love doing these things with him! We parked on the street and walked to this incredibly small diner. This is their 100 year anniversary!! It doesn't look like they have done a ton of updates over the years which really is part of it's charm. It felt super retro. There is a long counter with barstools and a couple of private tables. Everyone pretty much sits and the counter and chats though. Lots of regulars. There were a lot of people coming to grab carry out at well. The food was really quite good. Nothing fancy. I know not much about MI and get to Detroit rarely except to pass through the airport in transit. Today, however, I had a few hours to kill and decided to rent a car and go on a quickie food tour. In looking up the foodstuffs popular with the locals, I spied some pastrami hawkers, many lebanese joints, and BBQ that sounded interesting until I came upon the "Coney Island Dog" referenced by several respectable foodies. This immediately piqued my interest and Duly's Place became my layover target simply out of respect for the late Anthony Bourdain and his poetic love for the place. Getting here gave me a good tour of blue-collar Detroit. Decaying infrastructure, crumbling abandoned buildings, and urban core grit gave me pause about where I was heading. However, upon walking in, it was immediately apparent that this was going to be good. Old school formica lunch counter, peg-letter board menu overhead, and a bunch of locals sitting elbow to elbow with attractive lunch comfort in front of them. I got the sense that everyone in there except me goes there often because the counter men knew them by nickname and knew their order before they even sat down. The counterman had good radar and picked up on my Coney Dog virginity but nevertheless, made me feel welcome to eat at his lunch counter which went a long way with me because I really felt like I was standing out like a sore thumb. The menu seemed a little plain Jane with burgers, fries, and the usual Americana comfort food but I noticed that everyone in the place had chili in front of them in some form (in a bowl, on a burger, or over a sausage). Since I was here on a Coney Dog mission, I did not hesitate and ordered up 2 snappy beef dogs in pillowy soft white buns covered in beanless chili, slathered with mustard, and doused in raw white diced onion. Really satisfying and I can now understand why the locals argue about where to get the best Coney Dog in town. Having zero experience, all I can say was the ones I put down were damn tasty and I would not hesitate to go here again and eat the same thing. Except next time I would eat 4. At $1.95/Dog, they were a steal along the lines of Costco greatness. This gets my top rating for showing off something deliciously simple and locally unique that makes Detroit a place worth visiting. read more
