I have made several purchases here, and like the store, but cannot recommend their gunsmithing services. I had them re line a rifle barrel, due to rust on the muzzle. They did an ok job on the barrel, but returned it to me (after about a year) no charge. They said after re assembly, they couldn't get it to function. I just recently tore into it myself, and the extractor was broken. I put an e bay extractor in and it functions fine. C'mon guys, that's disappointing. read more

I've been shopping at Duncan's since they were a shop in a house in Vista. This time I was transferring a pistol to my nephew. I am sure it was not a profitable transaction for Duncan's but they could not have been more helpful, friendly, and careful if we were buying a high grade shotgun. I have never interacted with a more helpful staff. I have been to a lot of gun shops in many states and these guys will take the extra time out of their day to make sure you are well taken care of. They are respectful, knowledgeable, and overall great people. Their rates are also SO cheap compared to their competition. I bought a used gun at Duncan's recently, without going into too many details there was a pretty serious problem with the purchase. I called Duncan they put me on with the "big boss" who immediately made this right. No argument, no fight no negotiation he just took care of me. Got a full refund, including the government charges and use that credit to spend about three times more money on a very fine shotgun. I've made several reviews on this site about poor service from other companies, mostly restaurants but I'm happy to say this time I'm extremely satisfied with the outcome. Problems are going to happen, that's inevitable, but the real judge of a good company is in the resolution of problems and Duncan's gun works really stands out with resolution skills. I highly recommend these guys. I'm very impressed!!! read more

Like stepping back into the 70's, grumpy old white guy clearly annoyed to still be working. Pros: North county location, gun smith recommended by other similar businesses. Cons: Old men insulting you and accusing you of not know how to fire a rifle. My long gun was misfiring and the first thing he says was "probably user error". Called beforehand to see if they could install a simple part. They said to come on in and they could do the same day. I drove across the county, as this place was highly referred. I show up and then they say it'll take a month b/c they are backed up. Then I went to a different gunsmith on the same day and they were able to accommodate in 10 min. No fuss. It honestly felt like Duncan's didn't want new business. I will not be referring anyone here. After reading other reviews it looks like I'm not the first one that's been told to come in and told otherwise when showing up. read more

Decent gun shop in San Marcos. Family owned. Not a huge selection of firearms and their prices are on the higher side but I like to support small businesses if I can. The owner is definitely a character and can come off as abrasive but at the end of the day, seems like a stand up guy. Had a couple of very good experiences with the gunsmith here. read more

I went to Duncan's with my Christmas bonus prepared to reward myself with a top of the line AR15. I saw online that Duncan's was a Radian brand dealer. I went there at about noon on Saturday. The parking lot was empty. The parking space lines were very faded and not easily discernable. I parked off to one side leaving room for others. As I entered the store I saw a man exiting carrying trash and garbage to the dumpster. I held the door for him and said hello. His response was could I move my car against the other building so others can park. It was then that I noticed I was not within the faintly painted, fades parking space lines. I'm certain I was the only customer there and also certain there was plenty of others places to park. I didn't like his grumpy attitude, his tone or not being greeted before being told to move my car. I re-entered my vehicle and drove away. Very knowledgeable and helpful staff. Years ago, I brought in a couple of historical pistols. One of the staff members spent about 30 minutes going through various books and identifying what I had. I also had them service an old .22 Remington pump action rifle. The ejection mechanism had stopped working. Duncans fixed this 70-year-old gun and it still works to this day. I was looking for someone locally who would do a little work on a rifle of mine. Another business where I purchased the accessory will do the work for $65, but I would have to ship the rifle out to them. Duncan's said they would do the work for $80. I decided to go with Duncan's. The problem begins with pickup. The price went up to $125; almost doubling the price the other company charges. The staff did say the price could go up depending on how much time and effort is needed to swap the fore guard, I just think an additional $60 is a bit high considering the quoted price. Not the end of the world, but the condition of the rifle was extremely disappointing. The barrel had gouging marks from what looked like a vice. There were a couple other scratches in the receiver. This was incredibly unsatisfactory, especially for a gunsmith business. I wouldn't expect to take my truck into get worked on and pick it up with extra scratches in the body. In addition, the rear sight was so loose it almost fell off. There should have been no reason to touch the sight in the weapon. I didn't take photos yet, but if I can add them later by editing this post I will upload them. my overall experience with the shop was less than desirable. read more

These guys were super friendly and very easy to deal with. I needed some fairly complicated gunsmith work completed. Over the phone I was told to bring everything in and they would take a look at it. They gave me a ball park of what the services might cost but made sure it might change depending upon the complexity. After coming in I met with Manny the gun smith. Super friendly and listened to exactly what I wanted done. He told me it may take up to six weeks to have everything completed as they were a bit backlogged. No worries about the time but appreciated his honesty. Fast forward two weeks and I got a call the work was completed and to come pick up my firearm. The work was very articulate and professionally done. The cost was what was initially quoted. Each time I go into this store the employees are always friendly and listen to you instead of telling you what you need or should do. They offer good input and are a lot of fun in plain conversation. This is a great shop to go to especially because there just aren't that many of these places around the city and county. They certainly have earned my business. read more

I knew i not just getting my questions answered but a real learning experience by someone intent to make me a better gun owner and shooter. The only true "GUN STORE" in San Diego County, Been a customer since 1977, and am always totally satisfied with their superb workmanship. The best support and repair shop available---Hugo is the master of pistols, Lazlo has no peer with shotguns/rifles, and Bud is exceptional at custom stock work: he did a Winchester M1890 restoration that I took to the Las Vegas Antique Firearms Show (on display only.) Doug Turnbull of Turnbull's Restorations, N.Y. said: "I see you have one of my guns (referring to the M1990.) He examined it and said "Fine work! Tell your gunsmith I'm impressed!" Unless you are looking for historical guns or old gun knowledge this is not the place to go. The staff are completely clueless on anything made in the past 20 years. Even basic parts and pieces of common day guns are beyond their expertise. If you have a flintlock and want to speak with someone who used one 600 years ago then definetly stop by. Make sure to speak very loudly as half of them are 80% deaf and you'll have to repeat yourself endlessly. Do not show up expecting to get something on their website as they do not carry anything on it, they don't even know what is on their website because it is their distributors inventory and they just have it shipped to the store for you to pick it up. Waste of time and money. Blows my mind to think they are still in business, I have no idea where the money comes from as they have very little inventory which is all overpriced and their customer base is almost nonexistent. The customer service is so beyond horrible, these old arrogant guys are so rude and condescending, all the reviews here say the same thing about how horrible the staff are. I try to support local small businesses but this place is unacceptable. They get mad at you for even walking into the store as if they don't want any customers. Ridiculous read more

No they took 9 months to get gun I order, then they said your not a qualified person , kept my 9 and tried to intimidate me. Well the manager did this, the young Asian worker was fair and professional but he had to consult with the manager who's name I don't recall but I was suppose to go back to store to meet up with him so he could explain why he's gonna keep my 800 bucks, at that point I contacted my attorney and haven't had a chance to check with fbi yet to see why I'm listed as unprotected. Duncan gun works had one good. Employee who actually apologized to me. Oh I forgot to mention the manager told me they would be refunding my 809 but left it up to his young worker to give me bad news. What a crappy guy he is. I recently took my lever action 30/30 in for repairs. We agreed upon a certain price. They took over a month to get back and they doubled the price. The gun came back damaged(scratched) and didn't even work. I never recommend going to Duncans gun shop they are over priced and unprofessional. read more

I've always heard about this gun shop because it's been around for so long. Also there is a shooting range out in Rainbow that if you want to shoot there you have to become a member by signing up at Duncan. Well it was a family business with range and the gun shop but I spoke to a lady who works at Duncan and says they are no longer affiliated with the shooting range in Rainbow. The shop is very small and has that old school wild West feel to it. It's definitely a mom and pop operation trying to survive with all these other gun shops popping up near by. The prices are a little high but that's understandable because they have to compete with larger gun stores. They had some cool accessories but that's what would probably bring me back. read more

Duncan's is a great store with qualified people for sales and your gunsmithing needs. Are they cheap? Nope. They sell at retail and don't discount HOWEVER they stand behind and fix anything you have an issue with (I haven't had an issue). I've had stocks changed on rifles, ambidextrous safety adding to a 1911, and a cylinder fitted for a single action revolver. They also have unique used firearms both post and pre-1900. And of course a gorgeous rack behind glass of top shotguns and rifles highly engraved and beautiful wood stocks. read more

The staff here are all very friendly, and very knowledgeable. I've purchased a few rifles here and also had them do some modifications and installation of new parts. The work they do is top notch, and the customer service they provide is outstanding. This place isn't a zoo like turners can be, and don't think because of their size that your limited to what's on the shelf because they can get you anything that's legal in CA. I had such a good experience here from the start that I don't see the need to go anywhere else. Their prices are competitive but even if they weren't I'd still shop here because of the level of service and quality workmanship. I trust them and I know I'm in good hands when doing business here, especially when it comes to having any work done there's nothing to second guess. The same goes for their knowledge of the industry, if I ask them for advice I don't even need a second opinion. They hit the mark every time. As long as your polite, patient, and respectful then they will treat you the same way. Don't waste their time and they wont waste yours. Like any good business, but they do it better. Let me preface this by saying the amount of "negative" reviews I've written in my life can be counted on one hand. A couple weeks ago I was perusing the internet for a new trigger for one of carry guns. I stumbled across Duncan's and was elated they had a multitude of triggers on their site and that they were family owned and operated for decades. I stoped by the store to discuss my options and was told they don't carry any of the triggers in store, and to order the trigger directly from the manufacturer bring it in and there was a good possibility it could be installed same day. Sweet deal (I thought). When I arrived home, I ordered the trigger. When it arrived a few days later I call Duncan's (last night) to confirm I could bring it in and have it installed. The associate I spoke to said to arrive when they open and they'd take care of me. I took the am off work and showed up 15 before 9. I walked in as soon as they opened the doors and stated my purpose for being there. They explained it was an easy install but then (Hugo) let me know he was still working on firearms from early January (it's April 5th). I explained I was moving out of state in a months time and couldn't wait 3 months to have a trigger installed. I remained respectful and explained the timeframe I had been given the day prior, I received a shoulder shrug and a sorry. This is like an old fashioned gun shop, with in site gun smithing. Everyone is knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. I was having some minor issues with a new gun (AR15) that I bought at one of the big sporting stores, and they couldn't help me. So, I went to Duncan's. Hugo took care of me right away, and fixed the issue I created, without telling me I was an idiot, all for a very fair price. While I was there I also bought some ammo, that was the best price I've seen in the area. Then 1 day later I screwed up the California Compliant mag lock again. Back to Duncan's, and he fixed me right up again, and even made me a custom tool to keep the pivot pin in place (which was the issue) when I had the lower removed. Oh and he didn't charge me for the second visit. In the future they will always be my first stop for all my gun needs. Thanks for the great service, Duncan's! read more

Duncan's Gun Works is overpriced. WAY Overpriced! WAY OVERPRICED! They really like to SCREW their customers on the price. I paid $70.00 more than fair market value for a laser/light optic. I paid $90.00 more than fair market value for a Remington 10/22 I paid $200.00 more than fair market value for a Remington 870 pump action shotgun. I paid $50.00 more than fair market value for a stun gun called "The Runt". After shopping around for a while and learning that I overpaid, I no longer do business with Duncan's Gun Works. I feel ripped off here. Shop around a little and make price comparisons before making a purchase here. You'll see what I mean. -Jeff read more
