I returned and give this location 3 stars again. I regularly order the vanilla latte, which was pretty good this last time though not as good as usual. My friend said his shot of espresso was sour. I also learned that there are no outlets at this location and I know this is true of the Anacapa location as well. I had come here to browse my computer, but had to leave for Starbucks within a few minutes. (Definitely don't intend to hang here unless you're fully charged.) Also I do agree with another reviewer that this location's baked goods are limited compared to their other spots. It would be nice to see the fun items like homemade pop tarts. Yaaaaas, the Goleta French Press has finally opened!! I have been waiting months for this to happen. They are my favorite coffee shop in downtown Santa Barbara, and now in Goleta. They knock any nearby competition (ie. Starbucks or Zizzo's) out of the water. This location opened on Wednesday, 2/10/16, and I've visited each day since they opened. My usual order is a large vanilla latte. It tastes the same each time I order it, and at every location (ie. State St, Anacapa, or now in Goleta). I've tried other drinks like the iced tres leches and the chai latte, but the vanilla latte is my go-to favorite. There do have a somewhat 'secret menu' which includes chocolate chai latte. I still want to try their hot chocolate, magic bowl, and maybe the matcha tea. It's hard to try something new when I know that the vanilla latte is always good! But now with this location so close to me, I can risk trying something new. The pastries are all freshly made, and they can sell out by mid-day. The menu changes every 3 months or so. They typically have scones, cookies, bagels, biscuits, brownies, and sometimes they have mini-pie's or other seasonal treats. They offer donuts once a year on New Years Day. The only thing I do *not* like about French Press is that they do not advertise the price for their baked goods. Sometimes it's a surprise when you order the cheddar bacon biscuit and see it cost $4.25 or so, yikes! The employee's and clientele lean towards hipster, but I don't care. Came here to study for my finals. This place can get loud (music & people talking) but the cafe's environment is open kitchen and does not feel crammed. Support local businesses rather than big corporations *cough* Starbucks *cough.* Highly recommend to come early to grab a spot to study. Sidenote (rant): I understand this has nothing to do with the adorable cafe but some people do not know their own personal space. read more

They have a variety of teas here so I came for a quick breakfast and tried the Genmaicha Japanese green tea, along with the caneles. The genmaicha is tea made with toasted rice, and it was pretty good. Went very well with the caneles (a small churro-like bite with custard inside). Slightly pricy at $7 for both of these, but I'm glad I tried it. The café itself is sleek and modern. Plenty of tables and stools, inside and outside. Docking a star because they really need some outlets in there; it's a minute detail, but I feel that it's crucial for any café. read more

Fabulous coffee, good pastries, instagramable coffee art and the staff are always super friendly and really fun to talk to! I've worked both independently and with groups, and it's worked well in both scenarios. Only reason for 4 starts instead of 5 is that there are no outlets for charging your electronics. Literally, there is not a single outlet. That's probably done on purpose lol, but it still makes it tough if you have and older laptop or forgot to charge it before coming. read more

Came here today to get some work done due to an internet outage at my home. The staff assured me there was wifi, and so I paid for an extremely overpriced coffee and sat down. First things first, they had a pitiful amount of tables and very few outlets to plug in. Then I tried to log into the wifi, and couldn't even get a single page to load. I wish I could rate this 4 1/2 stars because the only downfall to French Press is that there are no outlets and there is not much indoor seating. The pastries that they sell at the register are freshly baked at their location downtown, and are delicious. The employees are incredibly friendly and remember your face. When I went in today to grab a latte before my final, I talked with the barista about it while I was checking out. I stayed for a while to look over my notes, and when I left he wished me good luck on my final. It really is the little things that can give your store great customer service. The coffee itself is always made right and presented beautifully with art on the foam. French Press is a great place to grab a coffee to go or to stay and chat. 10/10 would recommend! read more

I LOVE French Press. I have been going here since before I started going to UCSB. My favorite location is the one on state street because I used to come with my mom on road trips. I was very excited when the location opened here in Goleta(only a 2 minute drive from my house). The coffee is high quality and I always enjoy spending a few hours sipping my latte and getting work done. However, lately I have realized that the prices are pretty ridiculous. I brought friends here and they both ordered regular coffees with almond milk. Their total came to $5.50 (that is way way too expensive for just a plain coffee)! When I go to coffee shops in LA and New York, I don't even pay that much for a cappuccino or a latte. I'll pay $4 max. When I get a latte at French press it comes out to $4.32 and that is almost pushing it, but I figure I stay there for a few hours and the service is always great. Anyway if you can afford to go, French Press is one of the best coffee shops in Goleta/ Santa Barbara. I just wish they would lower their prices so more students could go without breaking their wallets. read more

This is the best place to get an espresso drink in Goleta. This is also coincidentally the worst place to get pastries in Goleta. [update - best espresso is now at OTC] The coffee/espresso here is very good by Santa Barbara standards, though it's only just OK by any other place that has a respectable coffee culture (sorry SB! You have many wonderful things going for you, and I know you think you know coffee, but you don't.) The drinks are made with care and proportioned well. It's just the flavor itself that isn't quite right, like it's missing something crucial in the middle. The pastries are essentially dense, collapsed lumps of dough that never will never know their true potential as light, fluffy flaky pillows of heaven. It makes me so sad writing that. There is indoor and outdoor seating, and the high ceilings and spaciousness inside feel welcoming. The baristas and staff are really friendly and attentive to customers, and it's really what keeps this place on the short list for coffee needs. read more

The French Press is a very cute place if you want to study or just catch up with friends. They have a good tea selection and a pot of tea is only $3!!! The coffee is good too and reasonably priced. The only negative side is that there is very limited amount of seating even though there is plenty of space for more tables and the wifi didn't work so I couldn't really study there. Came here per a recommendation from my boss who knows good coffee. He wasn't wrong. I always try a new coffee shop by judging their plain black coffee. Nothing added to cover up poor quality. I tried the black coffee and it was the perfect balance and you could tell it was fresh. I then asked for a splash of almond milk and I was told they have not only almond, but coconut and soy milk too! (Starbucks can't say that!) The building itself is very spacious and has large windows for lots of light. Indoor seating which was a tad uncomfortable for those trying to camp out and study here, but fine for enjoying a cup of coffee or one of their delicious assortment of desserts and pastries. Outside are tables for 2-4 people and include umbrellas so you're not directly under sunshine. The man that helped me at the register was awesome. Good looking dirty blonde hair with a beard (don't know his name) anyways, he was very helpful when he saw the "first timer" look on my face. If I'm ever back in Goleta I will come back to try one of their lattes that people have written about. read more

I loved my experience here. The girl who helped me was adorable, i liked how open the space is inside making you never feel crammed. This place is what i would call "fancy" coffee but the prices were great and my cappucino was amazing! They didn't burn the almond milk which has at places more often than not but not here! I wish they had a window to the outdoor seating area so that you can hear them call your name. The French Press totally has a hipster vibe and fairly good espresso drinks. It's a good place to get a coffee drink and a nice pastry. Their cookies pastries are pretty good! I personally love their cold brew coffee- which is what I mostly get. Or an americano when it's cold. The cold brew is some of the best I've ever had. I don't even put any cream in it! The cold brew is probably 80% of the reason I keep coming back. As far as brewed coffee, there are better places nearby. They don't have a big selection of drinks, and instead focus on a few. Tea selection is decent too. I like studying here because it's really well lit. The downside is that they do not have any outlets, probably to discourage people from hanging out all day. Which doesn't bother me, but something to be aware of. Overall, a good coffee place option for a casual cup with friends, or short business meetings. This location is closest to my home, but I used to frequent the location on Cota and Anacapa when I lived downtown. The state street location is tiny, so it's better for grabbing a drink and moving in, whereas the other two are better for hanging out there. read more

I've been supporting French Press and now Dune Coffee for years. This morning, I placed an order for two items and paid online, for pickup. I have done this many times before and the order is always ready when I get this. This time, I walked in and eyed what looked like my food on the counter. I didn't want to grab something or make assumptions so I told the barista I was here to pick up my order and told her my name. Another employee was helping a customer immediately in front of me and next to the barista. There was at least one other employee behind the counter. The barista immediately shook her head and said nobody by my name ordered anything. I was really confused and thought maybe I never submitted my order. She suggested I show her an order confirmation to prove I had placed an order. I took out my phone and found the confirmation and showed it to her. She continued insisting I had not placed an order. At this point, I looked down and pointed at the food, and asked if this was mine. The cashier finally spoke up and said it was. I mean what the heck is going on here? I paid for my order, it was prepared, and there's no system for the employees to know what's a to-go order or a pickup order? Four employees and there's no communication? It's not suspicious to any of the workers that there is food sitting on the small counter? I think training could definitely be improved here. read more

The staff this morning was so pleasant and nice! An absolute delight. I wanted to start my Birthday morning with a yummy cup of Chai latte so I decided to give French Press a try since I've heard so many great things. I am NOT a picky person when it comes to drinks but I was so disappointed in their chai latte. It tasted like water with a dash of milk and maybe a sprinkle of chai powder. Had a three star experience at this location on our first visit. Here is what we experienced: My girl loves coffee, excited we walked into the French Press for our first visit. The place was clean, had tables for studying and the cashier was nice. Upon placing our order, we were informed that the espresso machine was temporarily out of service. Since we are reasonable, rational and understanding people it wasn't the end of the world; just the beginning of our first impression. After placing our order we waited for 20+ minutes... twiddling our thumbs and observing the staff as they pitter-pattered around the coffee shop. A note to the owner and manager... If you're going to delay a customer for an extended period of time, offer them something, such as the following: ~A coupon for half off on our next visit ~A small discount on our current order ~A scone ~or, sit down with us for 1 minute and ask us how our day is going. Really anything to let the customer know, you value their time, you value them, you value their patronage and you appreciate them. Finally, the three stars awarded in this review are for quality of product. When the product showed up it was great. Now it's just a matter of retraining staff to provide an improved user experience. We look forward to upgrading our review when the experience improves. read more

The Americanos are ON POINT - so incredibly smooth and subtly rich. My Sunday morning ritual is to grab a cup of joe from French Press and head over to farmers market. I wouldn't have it any other way and frankly, I would not mess around with any other coffee house if they were located close to home or work. The only reason why I gave them 4/5 starts is because their specialty drinks are not hot enough. My boyfriend likes his mocha hot hot hot, not warm, and we make a big deal about it every time we order but they have yet to deliver it hot. One barista explained that the steamer cup handle gets too hot to steam the milk to his preference..but somehow (ahem) Starbucks can handle it. Nonetheless, if you enjoy warm mocha's they are super freaking amazing. read more

I actually like the coffee in this place. Easy parking, good coffee, simple ambience. What sucks is the complete lack of outlets and the attitude of the staff to not help charge at all. First the barista told me there's no outlets in the back. When I pointed that I can see the outlets a different barista gave me a list of liability reasons for not charging my laptop in the back. Yeah OK dude. I got it that you don't want to do it. I didn't appreciate your attitude. I will not come back again. Most places offer at least one charging outlet in cases of emergency - it's just silly you don't offer one. I was planning on buying more coffee but you just lost a customer. There are plenty of alternatives in this town for good coffee and good service. read more

I'm a coffee/tea enthusiast who worked as a barista for 2 years, and this is in my top 3 for any coffee/tea place in any county near Santa Barbara. The French Press compliments their savory/smokey coffee with delicious fresh pastries/baked goods that far surpass other similar establishments. 1) They make their own amazing vanilla in house 2) Their selection of teas is phenomenal with real ingredients as opposed to mostly artificial garbage you can find anywhere else 3) Their baked goods are made (fresh?) at their main location in Santa Barbara City, which range from vegan scones (best of their kind) and buttermilk biscuits all the way to (my favorite) caramel brownies and snicker doodles. 4) ALL staff I have encountered are knowledgeable/friendly and incredibly skilled baristas. Though no one is perfect, just about every order I've ever made has come out perfectly and exceeded expectations. 5) The coffee brand they use (and are owned by, Dune) is one of the better brands you can get your hands on. 6) Their espresso is better than every other shop around (try the Shakerato if you like espresso!) read more
