This was definitely the spot to go to for coffee if you were visiting the area. While I did have coffee available for me at my airbnb stay, I wanted to checkout a local spot as well. I did not visit during it's peak hours, though there still was a line out the door when I went mid-afternoon. The wait in line didn't seem too long and I was entertained / distracted by the merchandise that was out on display on the way to the register. I ended up pulling two coffee bags -- one for me (Brazil) and one as a gift for my sister (Gibraltar). I would love to be able to try the entire assortment of coffee beans. Love the packaging. The ambiance is open and spacious inside. Lots of space for seating indoors and there are places outside as well. I noticed a lot of students would come here to study or others who would go there to meet with friends or just a place to hang out. I would come back for sure next time I am back in the area and would like to try a food item next time and a matcha drink next time. read more

One of my favorite things to do when travelling is definitely visiting different coffee shops, especially local favorites. This store is so cool! Like many parts of Santa Barbara, the buildings are steeped in history and reflect the Spanish heritage of the city. I walked in my dog (they're dog friendly!) and went straight to look for the menu. My dog immediately found the bike pump and the snacks they leave for dogs. Service is super nice! They all seem very jovial and cheerful - making it a really nice local vibe. It was great to see the community in the coffee shop. Sadly, the coffee leaves something to be desired. Their menu is pretty standard - you got your flat whites, cappuccinos, lattes - and nothing special or standout from the menu. That's fine - you can still be a standout coffee shop with a standard menu. I ordered two vanilla lattes - one hot, and the other iced with oat milk. Unfortunately, I think my order was misheard as my iced oat latte was missing the vanilla. - Vanilla Latte: Fine. My partner typically orders this everywhere and he said it was fine, but nothing standout. 3/5 - Iced Oat Latte: Already mentioned it was missing the vanilla I asked for, so I'll discuss the other elements. They use a darker roast - thus, making it more susceptible to a bitter taste. That, and I believe an over-extraction or a longer pull made the coffee quite bitter. They also served it in the same cup as the hot coffee. My main issue with this is that I'm a slower coffee drinker, and thus my cup began disintegrating as time passed. Their cups aren't constructed to uphold iced coffee well. 2/5 It was such a prime location nearby the USPS and is sat in a great historic area. Handlebars has great staff, who clearly enjoy their jobs, and have a great community surrounding it. It's sad that their coffee is subpar. Strongly recommend you order your coffee hot, to drink in-store, or just avoid. read more

Sitting right next to state street, this place had glowing reviews which pulled us here. There's street parking around so parking was not an issue. There's place was very modern and open. Seating included booths, a sofa, a round table so it's good for all kinds of groups. The staff was friendly, and happy to help. The glowing reviews led us here, however the coffee didn't live up to the hype. I ordered a vanilla iced latte, and it was definitely not as good.The vanilla flavor was not at all prominent neither was the coffee. Coffee tasted a like a dark roast, but the espresso shot wasn't as good as I'd expect from a local roaster. Overall a very average experience for a cup of coffee. read more

Second visit. The first time I was here there was a long line and they were very disorganized and it was very chaotic. I got a hot cappuccino. I was eating next-door for lunch so I decided to stop in for coffee again. This time I asked for just a cold coffee with no ice to go. I was surprised when it was served in a cup that hot coffee is served in paper with plastic interior. Was told that that's how they serve all their drinks. This is the first time I've ever gotten a cold coffee, drink, in a paper cup!! Not happy because I wasn't gonna drink it right away and with these cups, the coffee starts to infuse into the interior seam very quickly. I worry about the plastic getting into the coffee. Not sure why they don't have plate basic see-through cups they do have compostable ones if they're concerned about plastic. As for the taste of coffee, I really didn't like it. It tasted like someone took coffee and mixed it with some kind of Asian tea like oolong or Jasmine tea. I particularly do not like this coffee taste at all. I actually walked back two blocks to add a bunch of cream and sugar in order to be able to drink it. I think the best thing about this place is the location across from the scenic Presidio and that they have outdoor seating. I prefer coffee from other places as far as taste. We came in looking for a good pre brunch coffee and quickly understood why this place has such a strong following. There was a long line when we arrived, but it moved efficiently and the staff kept things running smoothly. The coffee was smooth and well balanced, exactly what you want to reset after traveling. As a huge coffee fan from WAY out of town, I decided to drop by since I'm in Santa Barbara for an event. The iced vanilla latte was SO tasty and refreshing, and the croissant really hit the spot! This turned out to be one of the best coffee shops I've ever been to. What surprised me the most was their pricing -- I ordered the largest coffee, with oat milk and decaf, and it was only $7. That made me genuinely happy, especially considering that many other places charge way more for the same quality. Came here a few times when I was in town last. Very trendy with a line out the door if you wait until late morning. I usually came early and so was able to gawk at the slackers. Staff is very friendly and prices on par. They sell beer too which is nice. Coffee was consistently good. Not otherworldly, however these days I'm very happy with good. Did cold brew and also a red eye over eye at different times (I'm boring and predictable). Breakfast goods were alright, with the cinnamon roll being my favorite.
