So this is one of those places that my wife and I really wanted to like. It's adorable. Downtown Bayhead is fun in the summer. So many boxes get checked. However, we went there this morning and it was a mess. The wait for a table was short, which was a plus, although they definitely needed some more bus boys. The hostess was pulling double duty on that front. But either way, we got seated quickly. Nice. It went downhill from there. It took almost a half hour for the two of us to get our meals, both breakfast dishes. And when they came out, my wife's order was wrong. It then took us 10 minutes to find our waitress and tell her, then another 10 to get the correct omelette. When the bill came, I was kind of expecting for my wife's meal to be comp'd or at least some sort of discount to make up for the mistake. But nope. No apologies or anything. Not even an extra cup of fruit to make up for their mistake. Kind of a bummer. This place is cool. But they definitely need to go their game, especially on a busy Sunday morning in late July. My wife went inside to ask if any outdoor tables were available, as she exited the building one of the waitresses immediatly admonished her for not following the sign that says wait to be seated. Wow! This place is so great for people with kids and just for everyone. I'm always nervous to go out with my 1 and 7 yo but they are so accommodating, the table is covered with paper on which you can draw. The service is very friendly and quick. I've eaten breakfast here 4 times this summer while visiting the beach. I've eaten inside and outside, but prefer inside. It's a nice dining room, remodeled since Dorcas' and I didn't notice a smell. The crab and avocado omelette was my favorite and I had it 3 of the 4 times I was there. It was consistent every time and with the amount of crab would be an $18 omelette in North Jersey as opposed to $11 here. The staff is young, friendly and conscientious...my coffee or water was never empty. I will be back. Good luck to the new owners. read more

Very cute and cozy atmosphere. Seating inside and out both are great! The service was wonderful and quick. They have the best huevos rancheros I've ever had! I live about a half hour away and would take the drive to go back for the breakfast. The corn beef hash was excellent as well. The others i went with enjoyed their meals as well! We waited an HOUR for our food to come. They are NOT kid friendly or maybe it was just our waitress. They have sugar packets, salt and pepper on the table. I ordered a coffee and gave my son a sugar packet to play with while I waited for my coffee. Before my coffee even came out the waitress comes over grabs the sugar packet and says "were not letting kids play with sugar packets because of this COVID stuff" and proceeded to grab the sugar packet and put it back where the rest of the sugar packets were... mind you, I was going to use it for my coffee. So now she "contaminated" the rest of the sugar packets by putting it back after being in my sons mouth. After waiting an hour for the food, it was cold and absolutely not worth the wait. I'm confused as to how they continue to get such a big crowd when everyone around us waited an hour or more for food. Gave them a chance because of the great reviews but seriously DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY! read more

This place is in a beautiful location. We arrived on a rainy Sunday morning in April. We were thrilled to see there were very few tables occupied. We had paid for a babysitter so we could enjoy a breakfast date. Unfortunately, we never got one. We placed our simple breakfast order then waited over 30 minutes for food to arrive. Staff walked by us for 30 minutes and no one wondered why we were the only table with no food. Finally food arrived, It wasn't even our food. Yesterday me and my husband and my daughter who is a baby came to have breakfast. We usually always sit in the back corner that has a bench, because the car seat needs to lean against some thing in case the baby gets fussy and rocks the car seat. I explain that to our waitress yesterday who was a female brunette woman very thin I don't know her name. All the guy waiters never gave us a problem always friendly attentive. I explain to her and said we needed to sit there for the baby safety to lean against some thing. She had an attitude from the moment we walked in and told us we had to move seats didn't care that I said it needed to lean against some thing. She ended up sitting us in the sunny area where the door kept opening and closing and I didn't want the baby to be cold that's why I really wanted to sit in the corner seat and the baby seat I had to hold the whole entire time so we didn't fall off those thin chairs. I've came there many times before this and most of the time all the female waitresses are nasty they all have attitudes I even witnessed a fight and a woman leaving in the middle of her shift saying that she didn't want to deal with this. You need to hire a whole new staff because there's only two guys that are actually nice. And just because of that rude comments and her lack of empathy for caring for my baby and letting me sit in a seat that was more safer for my daughter I'm not coming back. I don't understand why we had to move and it was not crowded at all there was only four other people in the whole restaurant. It's a shame that people and their attitudes can ruin a whole entire restaurant. read more

For years my friend and her family have been loyal customers of this place, however, we left this time very unsatisfied. To start, we called prior to coming in and put our name down for a table. Upon arrival, they completely ignored this and told us we would have to wait for a table. After being seated and ordering our food, more than 1 hour goes by and we have still not received our food. After a brief scan of the restaurant, we noticed several tables that came in WELL after us received their food. We decide not to say anything and another thirty minutes go by. Finally, we ask the waitress and she says they're working on it. Not once this whole time did she check in or wonder about the whereabouts of our food. After two hours, our food comes out and I must say the portion sizes were very small, leaving me quite hungry upon finishing my meal. Finally, once we get our bill an older female waitress (possibly the manager or owner?) asks how our meal was. We politely inform her that the food took a while and she replies with a rude & sarcastic "it is what it is" type of remark about them being busy with takeout orders rather than offering something to compensate for our disappointment. It is unfortunate, but this establishment is not a place I will return to as the service was horrible. read more

Me and my husband are new in town and have been in search for a good breakfast spot. We stumbled upon this cafe a couple weeks ago when searching through yelp. Based on the review when decided to go check it out. I do not believe in giving a 1 star review unless the food was inedible or disgusting but this place was pretty close to getting one. We had a pretty unusual experience here and the reasons below are why we won't be visiting this spot again... 1. Restaurant staff was no prepared for us. We came 30 mins after opening and the only waitress there had not prepared any of the tables or cleaned up from the previous nights party. 2. My coffee was COLD! I asked for a hot cup of coffee and when it was brought to me it was ice cold. I had to get my cup replaced. 3. The food took WAY too long to get to us. Me and my husband were the only customers in the whole place and the food took over 30 minutes to get to us! 4. There was no music in the place. We sat in silence the whole time we were waiting and eating. (Some of you might not care about this as much but it made the experience even more awkward then it already was.) 5. When the food finally came it was cold! I ordered scrambled eggs and home-fries and my eggs were room temp and the home fries were cold (my husbands French toast was fine though) 6. The waitress got the order wrong. My husband wanted berries with his French toast which was about a $2 add on and instead she brought/charged $6 for a fruit bowl (This is just my experience with the place. You may still want to go check it out for yourself after reading this review but just be warned that the Dune Grass Cafe is not all it's cracked up to be.) read more

I live in Bay Head but in the past have never tried this wonderful little Cafe by the beach. It is always crowded and there is always a line during the summer. Fast forward to September... With those crowds gone, I have been here about 2x's weekly! The food is fabulous and the menu extensive. Service comes with a friendly smile(...even through a shielded mask...) and are always greeted by their welcoming staff as would a local establishment that keeps you coming back. Rhoda makes you feel like she has known you for years even after meeting once or twice. Do not hesitate to come to this local gem EVEN during the summer! read more

I don't see what is different about this place compared to the old Dorcas. Ice cream is nothing special, still has that same diarrhea smell when you walk in. Pretty expensive, service was not great. The french fries started to fall out of the bowl as the server approached the table and she used her bare hand to put them back in the bowl and serve them. Same hand that she probably used to touch the door handle, money, etc. Yuck! In her defense, NJ doesn't seem to have strict standards of cleanliness, but still, gross! Servers also seemed quite young and probably aren't making a career or food service, which is the only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. I really feel bad giving a negative review, especially since I like to see small local businesses succeed. If you liked Dorcas, you'll probably like this place. Also, on a good note, although we didn't eat inside, the decor looked nice. Not sure if the odor from the icecream part extends to the dining area. read more

We have enjoyed Dune Grass for lunch and ice cream - but Dune Grass is open for dinner now, serving tapas-style dishes Thursday to Monday and it is well worth an evening visit. With four of us sharing, we had the chance to sample many of the dishes and thoroughly enjoyed them all. The croquetas were delicious with just the right amount of kick, the grilled Caesar was an excellent twist on the old standard with a great smokey flavor, the chicken satay so satisfying as was the mushroom onion tart. The shrimp three ways was a fun shrimp sampler - but a real highlight was the braised octopus with potato purée - light and delicious and full of flavor. Never had an octopus dish quite like it. The wait staff was attentive and helpful - and the chef was happy to share his recipes and secrets. Remember, this is Bay Head, so BYOB! read more
