I met a group of my girlfriend's for dinner at the Rathskeller which is in the lower level of the Dunellen Hotel. It was just how I remembered it.. Upstairs, they have a fancier dining room. I was seated immediately by a friendly waitress name Vicky. She was very attentive and helpful when ordering. Vicky gave my group wonderful service and suggestions for dinner and drinks. The Dunellen hotel has a special on Monday's, Buy One Burger, and get One Free. ( In House Special Only.) The Rathskeller is very casual, that's what appeals to all their patrons. The food is nothing fancy, more like American Comfort Food. It's consistently delicious and there are many choices to choose from including specials for the day. For appetizers they have wings, nacho platter, , blackened filet bites, ahi tuna, mozzarella sticks,potato skins, chicken tenders, steamers, and fried calamari. They have delicious burgers which are big and look juicy.For sandwiches they offer the prime rib sandwich with a horseradish sabi sauce. Flat iron steak sandwich, grilled vegetable sandwich, grilled chicken sandwich , hot pastrami sandwich , cuban sandwich, lobster ruben sandwich, Canuck sandwich, chicken balsamic focaccia, chicken Caesar wrap, and cheeseburger BLT wrap.and more. You get the picture. For entrees they have meatloaf platter, hotel pot roast dinner, herb crusted Salmon, NY Strip Steak, Chicken Parm., penne vodka, blackened chicken alfredo pasta. If your more in the mood for salads they have a nice assortment to choose from. They serve several soups along with triple onion soup, and some fish and seafood, five personal styles of pizza. There really is something for everyone. The Rathskeller is kid friendly, their Half Pints- Mac n cheese, chicken fingers, grilled cheese, hamburger, or cheeseburger are perfect for kids. I chose to have their Prime Rib Sabi Sandwich. It came with a choice of fries or vegetable. I subbed sweet potato fries for regular fries for an extra charge. The sandwich was grilled sliced Prime Rib topped with sautéed onions and swiss cheese on a toasted garlic Italian roll with a side of Horseradish Sabi Sauce. My sandwich was tender and delicious, the horseradish sauce made it. The birthday girl chose the Lobster Ruben. She enjoyed it. Me personally, I thought the sandwich was a little small. It should've been served on larger sliced rye bread or even a brioche roll,and it could've been a little thicker. Another friend chose the Grilled Chicken Sandwich -Grilled Chicken breast served on a kaiser roll with lettuce, tomato and onion. Also available lemon peppered, barbecued or blackened. You can ask your server about additional toppings. Another friend chose a special for the day. Grilled chicken taco salad bowl. She too enjoyed her meal. Last but not least my other friend ordered their wedge salad and she added grilled chicken for an extra charge. She really liked her salad. The rathskeller was kind enough to let us bring in a small little birthday cake so we could surprise our friend. Was in the mood for a burger, and was not Satisfied. The Good: Got a seat at the bar right away on a Friday night. Good atmosphere, lots of people having fun, Ranger game was on the TV, friendly service. The Bad: The spinach salad we always get was less than half the normal size. We were both surprised when it came out. I thought maybe we order the wrong thing, but no. My burger was very disappointing. It was way over cooked, the cheese wasn't even melted on it, and the bread was stale. The bartender asked how it was, and I told him it was over cooked. He said, "well you ate it." Which was kind of a snide remark. Like, why ask me, if you don't want to know? So, finally he pours me another beer, which I didn't ask for nor want, because I was driving and had only planned to have one. I assumed it was complimentary, due to my criticism,... This is a hole in the wall American bar with the best French onion soup I've had. The decor is not the greatest but service is very friendly with the same couple of waitresses always serving us every time we go. Even the other patrons are often pretty friendly, which isn't always the case in a bar-restaurant setting (I'm from Staten Island). My wife and I are often struggling to bring the baby's stroller down the staircase into the basement bar and a couple of times now, someone has asked us if we need help. Very down to earth atmosphere eating here surrounded by salt of the earth type folks. Mondays they have burger night where you buy one and get one free (just the bun and burger are free on the 2nd - you still have to pay for toppings). It is one of the best deals around. The burgers are top notch too - big and tasty, though the chips they come with are a bit stale. Sweet potato fries are good though. They have a pretty good selection of beers including domestic, microbrews and imports - just off the top of my head - Stella and Guiness on tap, bottles include Blue moon, Victory Hop Devil, Molson. A margarita we ordered once was pretty weak. I have yet to try the rib eye steak but it seems like a good deal. 20 bucks for a huge steak of a good cut. My wife and I went for taco night once before. That was just ok. Mis Amigos down the street definitely has better Mexican. Overall, its a great place to eat with great value and friendly service. read more

We've committed to supporting local businesses during this time, so we've frequented Dunellen Hotel a few times and will definitely be back! The rib eye sandwich is incredible. Soft garlic bread, tender steak, creamy melted cheese... what else could you ask for? The grilled vegetable sandwich is on foccia bread and has an outstanding balsamic glaze that holds everything together. We've also tried the lobster reuben, but compared to the other two sandwiches mentioned this one doesn't hold up. Don't get me wrong, it's okay, but man... the rib eye and the grill sandwiches are outstanding! We will be back to try something off the dinner menu very soon! read more

We've ordered delivery from here using DoorDash and its been pretty decent. Things they do well: buffalo chicken wings, nachos and crab dip! Yum! Last nights delivery was beyond TRASH! A phenomenal, classy, traditional establishment. Two visits and both were spot on. FRESH food that's prepared with care. So far I've had the 1) salad wedge (smoky bacon, tasty blue cheese) 2) chicken balsamic focaccia, w/ fresh mozz, melted and a full delicious red pepper, 3) the flawless house salad with grilled chicken, and 4) grilled chicken Cesar wrap, generous portion and constructed professionally. This was a random place that my wife suggested. The menu looked interesting, so we figured we would give it a shot. Upon arrival (according to Google) we took a few seconds to actually locate the place (Looks like a regular house) but parking wasn't an issue. When we entered the restaurant, it was like I imagined it had looked for the past 30 years (not a bad thing, great atmosphere). It was a busy night so we took a spot at the bar, ordered a round of drinks and the Crab Pretzel appetizer. I would have to recommend this as it was soo good, but I would suggest to the chef to add a sauce on the side, maybe an aioli of some sort (its a pretzel, they can be dry sometimes). Dinner for the family were burgers, and they certainly had no complaints. For me, I tried the Lobster Reuben... To say that I am a foodie is an understatement, but I have to say the Lobster Reuben was probably one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. Pricing was fair, the bartender was an absolute joy to "sit with". Cant wait for our return trip. read more

Unfortunately, my last meal picked up from there was not good. The chicken was very thin and dry and the sauce was much too salty. Also, this was the 4th time I also ordered the Chicken Caesar Salad The 1st time there was very little romaine, so when ordering the 2nd and 3rd times I mentioned the lack of salad in the previous one so that one was good. This time when ordering I did not mention the amount of salad it should have and it was very light again. It seems like thinner, saltier meat and less salad is the norm for their chicken parm and Caeser. read more

I have lived less than two miles from this building for all 25 years of my life and always disregarded it. I never even knew it was a restaurant. I was never curious to know what it was. It took a particularly long, boring trip to Medemerge down the street to discover it. If you've been to Medemerge, you are familiar with the eternal wait in the examination room before you even see a nurse. While perusing Foursquare in my boredom, I came across Dunellen Hotel with gleaming reviews. I took my search to Yelp - more gleaming reviews. And not only gleaming reviews - but a universal decree to try the French onion soup! I cannot resist that! So my mom and I came here for dinner one rainy night, and my goodness, my fellow Foursquarers and Yelpers did not lead me astray. It wasn't the best French onion soup I had ever had, but it was definitely a serious contender. A deep, rich broth was molten beneath the perfectly brown, bubbly mixture of cheeses. It was a teeny bit under-seasoned for my palate, but not so much to even make note of it. Definitely a must-try! The French dip sandwich (apparently, I was feeling French) was great, too. The meat was on the dry side, but the bread was extremely fresh and crusty and the jus was just as rich as the French onion soup. I had it with swiss cheese instead of provolone. The portion was enormous and the sandwich was nice and meaty - great ratio with the bread. My mom had the lobster reuben, which many people have raved about. The hype was definitely warranted...great, unique flavor profile and great textures between the super-crisp bread and the creamy lobster. Great textures, perfect balance. Wonderful suggestion. As mentioned, the portions were huge, so we didn't have room for dessert. But every item on the dessert menu had me salivating! I can't believe I just found out about this little gem after living in Central NJ my whole life. First of all the atmosphere is awesome, the building was built in the 1800's and the bar and downstairs restaurant are situated in the basement. Very cozy and homey without having that "tried too hard" feel. The food was excellent, and I was surprised by some of the interesting things on the menu like Port Wine burgers and an entire Oktoberfest menu, complete with seasonal brew. My husband and I brought both of our kids here, and the atmosphere (at lunch time on a Saturday) was very family friendly. We were the first customers, but eventually the place was relatively crowded. Even though our server was tending the crowded bar and serving the restaurant goers solo, he was still friendly and attentive. The food was much better than I had anticipated. The french onion soup was probably one of the best I've had, and I loved the different cheeses and the addition of shallots. The Port Wine burger was large, cooked perfectly to my specifications and delicious. I could have done without the very hard chips that were served along with it though, I would have preferred fries. My kids and husband equally enjoyed their meals. The prices were reasonable, we will definitely be frequent visitors of the Dunellen Hotel in the future. Quaint and cozy, American food. The menu offers a little bit of everything from burgers to salads to pasta and chicken entrees. I had a spinach salad with balsamic reduction and then chicken Marsala with a side of fresh vegetables for my main course that did not disappoint. There's an upstairs and a downstairs. We sat downstairs, at a table near the bar. It had a Cheers-y type of atmosphere and the football game on in the background. On a previous visit, I had the port wine cheeseburger. . . excellent!! So word to the wise, make reservations for the pub downstairs. Anyway, our waitress was serious but efficient and the food was well priced. The Dunellen Hotel has two dining areas - the upstairs dining room and the Rathskellar located in the lower level. The menus are the same, but the ambiance varies greatly. The dining room is just that - a dining room - and good for a nice dinner out or a meal with a larger group. Ive eaten at the Dunellen Hotel numerous times and have never been dissapointed. Its typical American fare with a unique special every now and then. If you are a soup and salad person, you'll be happy. The soups are great, especially the French Onion soup. Dinner platters are very generous. Petsonally, I prefer eating down in the Rat. The ambiance is great and the bar area is nice for a beer after work! read more
