I've been here for before, but I figured I'd give my take on it. I went here with my friend when he was in town visiting. Had a nice little time together. We parked in the back for the restaurant. They conveniently have a liquor store in the front of the building as well. When we walked in, it was very easy to find a seat and they had live entertainment as well that night. The bartender came up to us and served us right away. We both ordered drinks and food, and everything was made fresh. All prep just right to our liking as well. He also got to socialize with some new people too. If you're in Hillsborough, and are looking for a place to have some good food and meet new people, Petrock's is definitely a place to go. read more

We stopped in for an impromptu lunch here. It was delicious! I started off with the soup, which was homemade and delicious. then, we proceeded onto the broccoli and cheese bites, which were spectacular. For entrées, we ordered the fish and chips, the fish tacos, and a pastrami burger. The burger was really juicy and delicious. Perfectly cooked, medium rare. Fish and chips were crispy and satisfying and the fish tacos were soft yet crunchy and just perfect. The waitress was great, made recommendations and was a lot of fun. If you're looking for very good quality, not-too-fancy food and friendly service this is your place. Stopped in for a quick bite and a drink on a weeknight. The drink was delicious, the food not so much. I ordered the French onion soup and it was inedible. It didn't resemble what it was supposed to be. The salad was a heap of greens dumped on a plate with a dressing that was pure vinegar. There was one slice of cucumber cut into quarters. Needless to say I left hungry and paid way more than what it was worth. I've been to this restaurant before and although then it was far from gourmet it was decent bar food. A fancy dive bar maybe. Been here a few times. Staff is always nice. Place is fine inside. Only really get sandwiches as it's a beer and burger/sandwich place. Everything has been solid. I wouldn't really say you must get this or that but I also haven't had anything that was bad. Just a decent place. read more

This is THEE neighborhood bar in Hillsborough so this is one review that's hard for me to write. Mostly because I love pubs and this is my neighborhood so I want Petrocks to be awesome. Ok so now that you've allowed me to vent... I like the food here. The 3 best things on the menu in my opinion are: The Burgers (all of them), The teriyaki salad, and the chili- and I am a huge PIA when it comes to chili. Lol. Drink specials are very good and I think that's a big draw (Teachers love this place). The ambiance is very low key, in a good way, and one or two rungs above "divey" on the classy scale that I've made up in my mind. Patrons here are great and it's the type of place to go to alone if you want to be left alone. Meaning, people mind their business. Unfortunately sometimes the people leaving you alone are the bartenders and wait staff. Service can be great or not so great. So the fair thing to say is that it is inconsistent. Sports/Tv watching: I'd say this is fair to poor. Never go here if you're interested- really interested- in watching a game. The TVs are a bit old and places awkwardly. This may be a choice by the owner which I understand but when I see TVs I want to see and hear them from almost anywhere around the bar. So would I go here again? Yes and I do! I go here to meet friends or with my girlfriend for a good meal. It fits in my "circle of bars" that I go to when my mood is: I don't want to stay home, but I don't really feel like "being out". The chicken fingers were $9 (left), wings (right) were $12. You can be the judge on if that is worth your money - it certainly was a giant disappointment for me. Atmosphere is equivalent to a typical 80s bar and lounge, and I'm pretty sure the same patrons have been going since the same timeframe. Again, that might be good for you depending on who you are, especially if you still wear a Led Zepellin shirt with your jean jacket. I can't believe I've never rated Petrock's as I've been coming here off and on for many years! I may be a bit biased on my review since it's so close to my home here in Hillsborough. They are definitely one of the two "Hot spots" in Hillsborough when it comes to local bars and eateries in town. What I like is that it's open fairly late, mainly for the 2nd late crowd that comes in for the evenings. You get a fun dinner crowd and a fun late crowd as well. Any night is fairly busy here and during the summer you get some nice outdoor seating. Prices are great as well, I'd say right on par for a normal restaurant price and the meals are worth it as well! I definitely have not had anything that I've ever questioned here. For any special events, or special holiday stuff (such as St. Patrick's Day, etc.) I would get here early. It gets VERY crowded those days. FYI - The corned beef and cabbage is absolutely amazing here during that the times they have it! There's so much more I can say, but I love coming here and just don't get here as often as I'd like to be able to... but when I do, it's always a good time, good food and surrounded by good friends and a lot of friendly locals! read more

I came back for a meal and went with the Buffalo Chicken wrap ($10.25) this time around. It was with crispy chicken, bleu cheese, lettuce and buffalo sauce. I also opted for a side of rice (see previous reviews for similar thoughts). The sandwich was packed with plenty of the toppings mentioned. Two strikes and were out. We ate here 3 times in the last 2 months. For the second time in a row, one of our meals had a bad taste and couldn't eat it. We didn't mention the last time we had this problem, but we did today. They didn't offer us another salad or to take the meal off of our bill. Sadly, we are never going back. PS Our server today was absolutely horrible. After he brought us our beverages, he stood around bs' ing with the other server. After 10 minutes I got up and grabbed his attention. He never came over to ask how everything is during the meal. The person that brought our check was the other server, she has taken care of us many times and she is much more on the ball. She is the person I told that our meal was bad and I'm surprised she let us leave unhappy. Btw, it was lunchtime, 2 servers and 3 tables were occupied. Came here after work for drinks and to get a bite to eat for Cinco de Mayo. This place is cute and pretty popular for the locals the live here. They had specials for Cinco de Mayo. We ordered margarita on the rocks that was served in mason jars. For appetizer we ordered jalapeño poppers and chicken empanadas. They were delicious! For the main course we ordered a grilled veggie wrap. That was delicious as well. Our waitress was very attentive given how busy it got. read more

I've grown up in the area, yet never went to the restaurant side of Petrock's (just the liquor store!). But I'm glad I finally went! The space itself is like your hometown haunt, old, but in a nostalgic way. My mother and I ended up eating outside. We had a lovely waitress (Lauren), who was friendly, approachable, and helped us pick the right drinks (wine for mom, tequila soda for me, made perfectly). We both ended up ordering calamari and Gracie salads with grilled chicken (though they had an extensive list of burgers that looked tempting), while my brother arrived later and got a sloppy Jane with sweet potato fries and a portobello mushroom salad. Service was a little slow, but not too bad. As for food, the calamari had great crisp and wasn't too rubbery. As for the salad, it tasted completely fresh, even down to the grilled chicken, the romaine, and soft cheese, with a sweet vinaigrette to enhance all the flavors. I ordered take out on a Saturday night, I ordered a burger medium ,with bacon and sautéed onions... my burger game out mw and they added caramelized onions. I've been to Petrocks a few times with large groups and the service is always excellent. Petrocks sponsors the local community theater so they get a lot of traffic from that after the shows. I appreciate that they are helping out another local business. The server was very very friendly last time we went and she was so speedy. The food came out pretty quick, too. I tried the brie appetizer which was good, but could probably use a little more sauce or something to tie it together. We went to dinner and they had a great selection. They also have a great bar and a large selection of cocktails and beers. My kids had wings, burgers, pizza, fried pickles and a warm pretzel. Everything was so good. We also ordered the two hotdog platter and onion rings. The onion rings are made in house and delicious. Everything is freshly made. The portions are large. Worst steak ever!!! Ordered the surf &turf. Everything but the steak was good, the steak was like chewing shoe leather!! They took $7.00 off my bill but added 2 cups of coffee on the bill for which we never ordered or received which happened to total $6.50. I brought this to the server's attention to which she corrected. I did tip 20% on the new total, however if this was corrected honestly I would have tipped well over the original bill as the horrible steak had nothing to do with the service. My wife and I went here for dinner on a Friday night. There wasn't a wait to get a table outside. My wife ordered a cheeseburger and I ordered a turkey burger. I would say my main complaint was their burgers were premade patties. If I'm going to pay $12 dollars for a beef or turkey burger I would expect the protein to be fresh. In addition both her beef and my turkey patties were fairly flavorless. Really nice bar area inside that can't be fully used due to COVID. However I don't think we'll be back due to the price/quality of their food. read more

A really great local bar & restaurant with an unpretentious atmosphere, friendly staff, and large menu. The food here is crowd-pleasing and full of variety; you can go there when you're splurging, on a diet, pregnant, vegetarian, or looking for hot bacon-on-bacon action with no holds barred, and you'll find something different to try every time you go. I particularly love the "bartender's choice" beer specials, where for a VERY modest price you get a random (but good-quality) beer from their stock of miscellaneous cold bottles. I also appreciate how kid- and baby-friendly Petrock's is, though one thing that would improve the experience for me as a parent would be the addition of a changing table. read more

I have eaten here before and gotten burgers which were good, but steer clear of a chicken sandwich of any sort. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich the other night. There were two perfectly preshaped small pieces of chicken breast on the bun. They looked like something you would pull out of a bag of no name frozen pre cooked chicken. And tasted that way as well....tough and tasteless. I'm giving 2 stars because the person with me thought their food was ok. Petrocks, I like you as a nice bar to have in town, but please refrain from ever serving chicken like that again. You're too good for that. read more

I have been going to Petrock's for a long time and it was always a great place to stop for a drink... but there wasn't much for me to eat there since I eat gluten-free. I come here occasionally as one of the local faves. The atmosphere is nice, and the place is very neat and clean. The bartenders are great and the servers are very friendly. When there's a crowd, it can be a little noisy inside, and the food is a little bit pricey for what you get, but the food is really good. I don't get to this part of Jersey much. Well, really ever. So when I went down to see a friend for a weekend all for and other such choices were completely up to them. Petrock's was out stop for dinner on Friday night. The place is big but just as busy. The bar area was packed the whole time we were there and we had to wait for probably 20-30 minutes to get a table around 8pm on a Friday night. Upon sitting down, I learned that my friend of almost 20 years is now a pescatarian. I take a more meat for the meat eaters approach with all forms of vegetarian types, but I was mainly surprised that they would pick a bar for dinner then. How many bars have a substantial vegetarian (plus fish) menu? Well this one does. They have a vegetarian page to the menu plus a most of their other sections of the menu had at least one veggie choice. We split an order of veggie nachos to start (ok, a bit too heavy on the black olives for my taste) and my friend got a pizza to start. I, however, rejected all forms of vegetarianism and got a burger with blue cheese and bacon. My friend and his wife did their best to hide their horror as I wolfed down our fallen cow colleague, and I did my best to not criticize the bar for putting red onion on a mushroom & onion pizza. They've also got a full bar with a solid beer selection, it was Stella for me that night. I don't know much about the area, but the bar seemed like a decent spot to catch a game or meet up with friends for a low key night out as well. Like I said at the start, I don't get down to this area very often, but Petrock's is a solid, friendly bar with a friendly atmosphere. Definitely worth checking out. read more
