I had photos of the old, brittle, partially covered labels from the last time the house was painted. I needed new paint to cover a replacement porch railing. There was a wait but three different people cheerfully let me know that they'd be with me in as soon as possible. They seemed genuinely friendly, it was so nice! Sahil is the name on the receipt. He was able to pull up the order from almost 15 years ago, found a replacement for one of the colors that is no longer available, confirmed the application, and when I asked about caulking, he asked relevant questions about the application and directed me towards... not the most expensive one but the one I needed. He even found a box for the two gallons of paint. Thank you! I don't know how Sherwin-Willams treats their employees but have found that it's usually reflected in the way that employees treat the customers. No one called me to let me know the paint was ready. I asked her when it was ready, and she snaps "I don't know I wasn't here". I immediately remembered her from my last visit where she had to fully disclose they will paint match but it's not guaranteed. Why doesn't she just say it out loud, "HOW CAN I NOT HELP YOU"? Then she looks up my account by name. As we're standing there for a good solid minute I say, can you put this on my account. She says "I need your ID" sure but why don't you ask for it instead of just standing there, breathing, and existing. Then she sarcastically says, "HAVE A NICE DAY". Your life must be sad to be that angry at strangers. Good lord lady- get a job somewhere else if you don't want to help anyone at Kelly Moore. I asked for delivery to my home. It would take three days. Then the leak got worse and I wanted to pick it up directly from the store. I called them and asked them to pull the part right weekend it got there and have it ready at the cash register. They happily did that for me and it stepped the process up by a day. I took it home and fixed the leak immediately. They were kind and empathetic to my situation. That's the nicest part.

Yesterday, my husband and I (both in our mid-fifties) went to Ace to return two unopened items that we no longer needed and to purchase another item. For the return, we had the receipt, and both items were unopened. Unbeknownst to us, one of the items did not match the part number listed on the receipt, although the description and price were correct. The employee at the register, Toll, pointed this out, and we were perplexed because these were the items we had purchased, and this was the receipt we had been given. We didn't think it would be an issue, and honestly, store credit would have been fine. However, Toll demonstrated zero ability to problem-solve or provide even a modicum of customer service. He refused to accept the return, even for store credit. My husband, in complete frustration, said point-blank that this was their error, not ours, and that the items needed to be accepted for return. Toll never even scanned the item to see if there was an error in the computer system, which is what I would have done. Toll grabbed the item we intended to purchase, shoved the items we were trying to return back toward us, and yelled for us to leave the store. We stood there shocked at how quickly the situation had escalated. I started recording on my phone because Toll's behavior seemed completely unreasonable and increasingly erratic. While we stood there, he called the police and falsely claimed that we were threatening him. The police asked whether we were armed and whether we posed a danger. Toll told them we were being hostile and that he felt threatened. I'm still in disbelief. As we left the store, without being able to return our items, he continued giving the police a physical description of us and attempting to identify our vehicle. Not only does this man have zero problem-solving or customer service skills, but his behavior raises serious concerns about whether he should be interacting with customers. At no point did we threaten anyone. We try to shop locally whenever possible, but I will never NEVER shop at this store--or at any Ace Hardware--again. From now on, it will be Amazon.

I did have a couple of very specific items that I would purchase if the price was right. I had a caliper/vernier on the list. Mine has lost its tiny electric brain and is crazy. I spotted the mechanical one that I wanted. The quality was astonishing, this tool will certainly last forever. Honestly, I could include this item in my will. It was certainly more expensive than the electronic one that I got from Harbor Freight. I've tried to use the Harbor Freight version, but it was useless. So for this particular tool pay for the quality. Making a shopping list was certainly more productive than actually walking into the store with a pre-generated list. I spotted a lot of items that I knew I was out of, but hasn't made it onto any list at all. I spotted a Dremel tool at a very low price. It may have been on clearance. Now I do want a Dremel tool, but I would use it so infrequently that it's hard to justify. However, the price was low enough that I felt much temptation. I must have been completely turned around the first time I was in the store. This time I found the clearance bins. As usual I found quite a few items to tempt me. I managed to hold my horses and resist but it wasn't easy. The store is also bigger than I realized. Which means the greatest barrier to shopping is finding your item in the maze. I didn't buy anything so my take on customer service is a little shaky. However, the staff did seem to be awfully efficient And the line moved rapidly. This store is part of a chain, and I have certainly been in bigger ones. But I didn't miss the size. They have simply jammed a lot of inventory into a smaller space. But you do need a sharp eye just in case you walk by an item. I like this hardware store. But there is one way close to me at home which I like faintly better. So I'm going home with my shopping list.

So I went to Rubenstein's a bought 600+ dollars of parts, and I told the counter guys "this stuff is probably all coming back, I wish you had a restocking fee because it's only fair that I pay for borrowing the parts." they just waved me off and assured me come on back we'll take care of you. At the end of the day, only the most expensive part, the valve, and 1 other part was needed to close up the line, finish the job, and put a smile on my customer's face. Two days later, I returned everything else and the guys were unfailingly upbeat and helpful. For a plumbing store, in this particular situation, this is unusual.
