It's heartbreaking to see how much the quality of food at Somerby has gone downhill over the past…read moresix months. Ever since the previous chef was let go for supposedly not following guidelines, meals have become nearly inedible. That chef may not have followed every rule by the book, but at least he cared - he added spices, flavor, and creativity that made the food something to look forward to. Now, every meal feels like an afterthought. The new chef not only prepares bland, tasteless dishes, but also can't seem to manage the kitchen. Delays have become the norm - residents are waiting up to two hours just to be served. It's frustrating, disheartening, and simply unfair to those who depend on Somerby for basic care and nourishment. People deserve better.

I lived at at Somerby Sandy Springs Assisted Living for 4 1/2 years. I was the AL resident council…read morepresident for 3 years. During the time I was there, I was able to thoroughly evaluate, document, and photograph the multiple violations of the DCH (Department of Community Health) that affected the residents in the 48 rooms that are in the AL building. I was one of a very few residents with no cognitive decline. If you are contemplating moving a loved one or yourself into this facility, please be aware that while the architecture, interior design, and landscaping are lovely, the care given to residents is substandard, the food is horrible, the activities are insulting, the maintenance is almost non existent, and the housekeeping is inadequate at best. Residents and families who complain are treated with disrespect, ignored, lied to, and ultimately asked to leave with reasons like "We can no longer meet your (or your loved ones) needs. " This is the blanket excuse given when they cannot find any reason to ask you to leave, and their lease states they do not have to have a reason to tell you to leave. If you have never lived here, you have no idea what goes on. Families who think their loved ones here are exaggerating or delusional, PLEASE listen. The food I was served included rotten potatoes, burned meals too numerous to count, cold food that was supposed to be hot, lukewarm food that should have been cold, imitation colas instead of cokes, boxed liquid eggs instead of fresh, processed foods with high salt and sugar content and preservatives, tough meats impossible to cut or chew, desserts that were "Sara Lee" quality, wilted salads, mold covered fruit, rotten tomatoes, hardly any green vegetables, multiple starchy foods like mashed potatoes and pasta served at the same meal, cold coffee, shortages of many items on a regular basis. The regional dining director told the food committee when they told him to fire the local dining director that he liked him because he was a "good team player". Corporate management told the dining director he could keep his job if he stayed on budget, would lose his job if he went over budget, and get a promotion if he went under budget. During the pandemic peak, we were served less than 1000 calories a day, cold meals with less than 3 ounces of meat (I weighed it on a food scale). Letters and surveys given to management were ignored. I had food poisoning 3 times. The multiple residents with no microwave had no way to heat their meals. Residents with cognitive issues were unable to report these kinds of issues, so there is no way to know how many others suffered. The dishwasher in the kitchen was frequently broken , so dishes were done by hand. Once in the dining room, I opened my napkin to get my silverware, and out crawled a big black spider. Somerby continues to advertise "Fine Dining." The times when no one showed up to help with showers are too numerous to count. In a 3 year period of time, according to Somerby's own records obtained by an attorney, there were nearly 2000 falls, 68 of which were outside. Somerby's computer print outs also show the length of time residents waited for help after pushing a pendant for help was frequently over 20 minutes, with some calls never being answered. I routinely had staff barge in my room without knocking or announcing their presence while I was on the toilet undressed, on the phone with doctors, or asleep. Many were disrespectful and rude and argumentative. Medical records containing medicines taken, doctors' names, diagnoses, and descriptions of resident behavior were frequently left out on the desk at the nurses station unmonitored. I have 400 photos of them. Several times I found pills dropped on the floor outside residents' rooms that were never administered. My pharmacist identified them as pain pills and blood pressure meds. I frequently had to leave my room at midnight to beg for toilet paper because contrary to Ga laws, it was not given to me. When my husband threw up on the rug next to the bed, it wasn't cleaned up for more than 2 years. The night he threw up in bed on his back, he nearly died from choking on his own vomit because he was not able to sit up. I couldn't get anyone to answer the pendant. When I went to get help at the nurses station, the CNA was sitting there eating and told me she was on her break. I had a huge moth infestation in my room that Somerby did not address for years. They were in my cabinets, my bed, my bathroom, my clothes, my pantry, and dropped larvae in my lap from the ceiling. This is a short list of problems. Somerby has 4 lawsuits that I know of beginning with 2019 and one a year for 2020, 2021, and 2022. You can research the inspections by the DCH going back 3 years at Gamap2care.com.

Kristen Henshaw Local Guide·73 reviews·296 photos…read morejust nowNEW I had to leave this under the Sandy Springs location because there's NOTHING for the Monroe location that Elliott Hollander is abandoning. He owns BOTH, and I want people to be very aware of who they're dealing with if they have their loved ones at his facilities. Monroe Hollander staff and families got an email on March 22 from Elliott, saying he's closing it down by April 30, and everyone needed to be out by 5pm that day. He didn't have the balls to come and speak in person....according to his Facebook page, he was in Charleston at the time at a music festival, then on to Aspen Colorado for a ski adventure....not giving 1 flip about the people who just were seriously affected by his decision. Not much more than 2 weeks later, staff has mostly abandoned ship, and Elliott left ALL the responsibility of helping residents find new homes to Christy. She and Mary have tried their best to care for the residents left, in spite of staff dropping left and right. More recently, Elliott told them it isn't "his problem" that he might not be able to pay them! Families are scrambling to help their loved ones who are left, and some residents don't have family here or are lower income and are stuck with wherever Medicare can send them. Elliott Hollander is a heartless person. He posts pictures of him and his grandmother with the hashtag #respectyourelders and in the meantime, ABANDONS 40+ lower income elders in HIS facility in Monroe, not to mention his staff. Don't do business with this guy. Entrepreneur? Ha.

Ms. Larrier was very professional and her empathy towards her patients health issues was amazing. Yes!! I'm a 40+ woman who's body is in worst shape than some of these vibrant, full of life seniors I had to hop pass trying to find my way to the pool area. Yes! I said hop.... Geesh! go figure. Heck they where looking at me as though they wanted to ask if they could help me. Unfortunately today was just a medical visit. While hopping around (LOL!) I did noticed how elegant and huge the Sterlings Estate is. It has a very welcoming entrance with whom I believe maybe a concierge to help you with what your looking for or answer any questions you may have. Today was a nice gentleman standing in waiting. Again looking at me like..... he was waiting for me ask to be pointed in the direction of my grandmother or something. NOPE!!!! He was polite with telling me the way to my destination. The Sterlings has a grand dining area with plenty of seating. I noticed also they have what looked like a coffee area, wellness center and plenty more activities for the seniors in your life to enjoy. I'm here today to get the full benefits of their heated salt water pool. The Sterlings offer Aqua therapy for people who don't live on campus. My health insurance had them on the list of places to choose from. I chose The Sterling Estates, because I have driven pass about 4 times and thought to myself.... Those look like a nice community for my mom or great aunt to live. Not knowing I will be the one visiting before them. But a least I had the pleasure of seeing what little of the community I could see. And I can say it was a memorable one.

They absolutely need better top staff members. Never try to reach the "nurse". She is unavailable by phone. They seemed to be really on top of things prior to our actual move in. Not the case at this point. The actual facility certainly needs a face lift. There are no automatic doors to the interior garden and patio area. Thus, if you are in a wheelchair you are not going out without help. If you decide to dine in your room, your meal is brought to you in a styrofoam box at the end of the meal service in the dining room. So you are going to get your meal an hour later. Oh great, almost in time for you to go for the next meal. I will not go on. Most of the residents are happy there. But, let's be real. Change is hard enough who is going to move again?
