I cannot thank, or praise, John enough! My husband I were experiencing some vehicular woes for a couple weeks - and finally, on a recent Saturday afternoon, I had AAA come to our assistance at our apartment, as now the car wouldn't start whatsoever. The AAA technician told me to either let it run, or drive the car for 30 minutes. I chose the latter, as I had a plethora of errands planned. We literally drove for no more than 4-5 minutes when the car died - on the road. Smack in the middle of Van Nuys Boulevard. We had to push it up a small driveway, which happened to be right next to Dutch Master Auto Repair. I was relatively stunned, but safely out of traffic, and decided to both look up his reviews (which are understandably glowing), and then headed over to ask for advice. John walked with me to take a look at the vehicle, and helped us get back on the road. Not to mention we had a lovely conversation about not just cars, but the history of his business, and our homelands (obviously, Netherlands for him - Finland for me). I have a great testimony I would like to share with you guys who don't have a good car mechanic in Los Angeles: Here goes: My car didn't start for the third time in 6 months due to some unknown issues with the battery, which had been purchased at Pep Boys on Sepulveda in Van Nuys only a year ago. After 3 hours of wait and bogus diagnostic ("Faulty battery and the old battery terminal that'd need replacing.") they were going to charge me for the labor and the difference between what the warranty had offered and a new battery. When the guy at the desk told me it was going to be almost $100 I asked for my car keys and left, then went straight to John's Dutch Master. I went straight to John after that: The battery was good, and so was the terminal. It was just dirty and needed to be cleaned. John even didn't wan to charge me for the job! I gave him small token of appreciation for the time he spend on my car. I was in and out there in 20 minutes. John's honesty is a gem in the industry. We all know how difficult it is to find an honest and good mechanic in town. To sum it up, I am confident to say that John is the most trustworthy and knowledgeable mechanic in LA. John (and also his brother) was my father-in-law's mechanic for ages and I actually heard almost legendary stories about a mechanic that solved all of my father-in-law's car problems swiftly and at a fair cost. One day I drove by Dutch Master Auto Repair and asked this mechanic whose name happened to be John about what was wrong with my car? He did a great diagnosis and I was impressed with his competence and integrity right off the bat. Then, I found out that this was the same John that my father-in-law was talking about! The next time I went in with my car, John told me all about the discussions between my father-in-law and him and actually asked about every member of my in-law's family!!! Recently, my transmission died and I respected the fact that John knows his limits. He does not do work on repairs that are not part of his knowledge base and never merely for the sake of monetary gain. He is honest to the core. He gave me a good referral to a place that certainly would do a great job but the price was naturally very steep because nether John nor the people he refers you to do a shoddy job. You get what you pay for and I wasn't in the position financially. I fell for a cheap mechanic who promise me the moon and I got a rebuilt transmission and somehow there is a God because my car still runs with all the extra repairs I was told had to be done right away. The people who put in another transmission basically invented additional work ($2300.00 of transmission replacement and axles, etc., and they didn't do work they said they had done. I now know that they broke my radiator while putting in the transmission and told me a farfetched yarn about how the last mechanic I went to broke the radiator on purpose. I ran literally to John for an appraisal of my situation and he systematically diagnosed and fixed all of incompetent mistakes and deceptions that the dishonest mechanics had made... John completed the repairs and I also learn from John a valuable lesson concerning the fact that there are car repair places where a customer can be taken for an expensive ride! If there were more stars John and Frans would get MORE! Was referred to Dutch Master Auto by Carl, owner of A-1 Auto body shop. I had a leaky radiator on a 2006 Lexus hybrid and the HUGE car Dealership on Van Nuys wanted over a grand for the repair. That's just way ridiculous! So on Monday after getting the referral I drove over to Dutch Master and John greeted me with a smile and a hand shake. He was professional and prompt and assessed the car with me there. I love when I can actually see the issue prior to the repair. John provided the estimate and we proceed with the repair. By 5pm my radiator (John did the work) was fixed at half the cost. John and Frans showed us the old radiator and was great at describing the issue and the repair. We really like these Brothers from Holland! Very nice and good to talk with. I have been going to Dutch Master Auto Repair for easily over 15 years now. John is a hard-working honest mechanic that charges fair prices. I remember many years ago going to another repair shop getting a quote for tune up. The other shop wanted to put on all types of fancy spark plugs n' what not and wanted to charge me north of $150 for the tune up. I took it over to Dutch Master and John looked at my engine and was like, "Yep! I can do that for you. It'll be $75 bucks!" Mind you this was over 10 years ago so prices may be different now but John saved me so much money. Also, John would always work with me if I didn't have money at the time to do the repair and he would do extras for me like little "hold-you-over-patch-work" until I was ready for the major repair. His patch work was so darn good I could literally hold off on having the major repair done for years!! Finally, what I love about this place is that if John cannot do the work he will be straight-forward and honest with you and let you know. He won't nickle n' dime you and play with you. He'll either recommend a good a good shop to go to or he'll tell you if you're car is about to become a money pit sucking up endless cash in order to fix it.
